Paul Jones Will Redshirt

And then there were three.

Late this afternoon the news broke that freshman quarterback Paul Jones was informed that the staff had decided to redshirt him this season.

The staff has decided to redshirt highly-regarded true freshman Paul Jones.

Which may come as a surprise to those who last remember Jones lofting two nice scoring passes in April's Blue-White Game. Or how enrolling early in school, back in January, would give him an advantage to see playing time this fall.

This should not come as a surprise to those who have been paying attention to the reports coming out of practice the past two weeks. Despite enrolling early in January and looking like the most impressive quarterback in the Blue White game, the truth of the matter is that Jones could use another year to learn the playbook.

Obviously, the interesting thing about this news is that no decision was made regarding Robert Bolden who only just arrived on campus a little over a month ago. I don't know whether to be giddy that Bolden is holding his own with McGloin and Newsome or if I should start panicking that the upperclassmen can't seem to leave this freshman in the dust.

Given that all the news we hear about Bolden is positive, I'll lean toward the former. To this point I've never really claimed a pony in this race, but I must admit I'm starting to pull for Bolden. For no other reason I'm just dying to see what all the buzz is with this kid.

As I mentioned in the Fan Post...

I just hope Jones does take this as a time to continue to learn and grow and not get discouraged by being the “odd man out”. I think having Jones and Bolden, if we can keep both on the roster for another year or 2, will just be nasty. It doesn’t matter which guy you have in, you know they’ll both have great ability and a strong skill set.

Let's Go State!

Jones could also look at it this way

with the current situation (Bolden not redshirting…yet), he’s pretty much the only one guaranteed a year to start (assuming we don’t pull in some other QB phenom in the time being).

Is it typical to announce the redshirt for a QB like this before the season starts?

Not really announced

Insiders were informed that Jones was told he would be redshirted. I think the staff just wanted to let him know because they are going to start reducing his reps in practice to focus on the other guys.

by BSD on Aug 19, 2010 7:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I was told

Yesterday just happened to be the day that red shirts were announced to all freshman. This wasn’t specific to Jones, even the freshman walk-ons were told yesterday what their status would be for the season.

I think the staff made the right decision. The recruiting talk last season always centered around Jones needing a lot of work but having incredible NFL-ish potential, whereas Bolden seemed to be more ready now but have a lower ceiling. It’s a great problem to have.

lions247 wednesday practice update

McGloin has been the most ‘solid’ thus far in camp, and though he has the best grasp of the playbook, he does not possess the physical tools that the others have.

I don’t really like to pump guys with no experience, but the buzz around Bolden is undeniable. Most people I’ve talked to since camp began have mentioned his play first when I ask who has been good. Bolden has some work to do with the playbook, but he’s been the guy that has drawn the most praise thus far. He moves well in and out of the pocket

So maybe Newsome is 3rd?

by jebatzel on Aug 18, 2010 11:20 PM EDT reply actions

If Bolden has turned that many heads

IMO he should start the 1st game and get all the exposure of game speed and getting the playbook down. At best, it could pay big dvidens on the road in game #2!

I'm pulling for Bolden as well.

My buddy was a manager with the team and did not instill much confidence in me that Newsome could get it done. McGloin, I’ll give him props be just doesn’t seem to be a good enough all around athlete, starting him will stall the program, I think he is probably at his ceiling. He should be a great backup. Bolden provides room for growth and a chance at winning now. If he falters, we have good back up plans.

This is big news

…but not that surprising. It was always obvious that one of the two true freshmen was going to redshirt; given all that we’d heard about Bolden (and the relatively little we’d heard about Jones), it’s no surprise that Jones would be the one redshirting.

So now, the reps will only be split three ways. Given that Bolden is the best combined running/passing threat, and that he has been able to come so far despite only being on campus for a couple months, I’d really like to see him emerge as the starter. Hopefully the bad scrimmage he apparently had on Tuesday was just a hiccup, and that he will be able to make the most of the increased number of reps.

Something no one has talked about (or maybe someone has, I just didn't check...sue me)

Some leaps of faith are taken here, so bear with me.

WHEREAS, What if it is Bolden? Newsome then has one of two options, as I see it: 1) transfer, but I think he’d wait at least a year for that, or 2) switch positions, which some have claimed is a possibility (I mean, Columbus has a WR starting at QB, so why couldn’t we have a QB slide to RB/WR)

WHEREAS, what if Bolden has three strong to incredible years (2011 and 2012 are poised to be great, by all accounts).

WHEREAS, what if Bolden jumps early? It’s not unfathomable.

WHEREAS, PJ will have two years of eligibility left.

NOW THEREFORE, all three QB’s can stay and play.

BE IT RESOLVED.

I feel like Newsome could really have a huge impact in the D-Will type role (sans returns), if your assumptions are correct. I’d kinda like if things played out this way, to be honest.

I hope Newsome is the idea Penn State guy

If he’s cut from the same cloth as Michael Robinson, then he’ll do anything for this team, play any position, and own it. If that’s who he is, and what you are saying happens, then he’ll end up being a wildcat/RB/WR and invaluable to the team and the offense. He has to see the writing on the wall that his future at the next level depends on allowing the coaches to put him where his talents fit the best.

This.

I want Newsome to end up being the MROB guy, but if that means being the MROB guy at WR, so be it. I’m not saying one way or the other (this week’s OMG scale is tipped towards Bolden, it could come back to Newsome next week), but I love when a player just leads, regardless of what he is asked to do.

If he's one of the best football players,

you know that means they will get him on the field.

I think it would be great to see him get 25 offensive snaps at WR/QB/RB. What about a three back backfield of Royster, Green, Newsome, with Bolden under center?

Anyone know if he ever played D?

He probably as the speed to be a safety. And at 6’2" and 220 some lbs, I’d say he has the size too.

by skarocksoi on Aug 19, 2010 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

This is what Newsome needs to be told

I feel TERRIBLE for him, and I was really pulling for him to start last year once we lost a few games to get him some real game experience.

But he hasn’t had that, and while I still wouldn’t mind seeing him start against YSU and Bama, like I’ve said before… he needed a PR firm this year. No one was singing his praises… we barely heard anything from him… McGloin had all the quotes, and Bolden got all the praise from the media. If I’m Newsome, I feel dejected and rejected… I would probably be thinking transfer to get a fresh start elsewhere.

However, I hope someone on that coaching staff is taking him under his wing and saying “Kevin, let me tell you a story about a guy named Mike. He was one of the most talented athletes this football team had ever seen, and he was pitted against one of the most natural quarterbacks Penn State had ever seen. He was a playmaker… saw the field all the time… but he didn’t get a chance to play quarterback until we needed him to do so. He didn’t complain, he just went and played. Now that man is the only Penn State quarterback to actually see an NFL snap since one that graduated in 1995. He still doesn’t play quarterback, but he’s legend around here. You, Kevin Newsome, could be that man.”

That would make me feel better about myself. Let’s try that if he doesn’t get the job.

B10 Network Practice Preview

When the analyst asked the other guys on the crew “who would you start at QB for YTS?” Both said Bolden, hands down. They said they would “live with the freshman mistakes for his upside” and that given what he had shown “he has an incredible future”

I feel the situation may well become a McGloin Newsome combo until game 3 when Bolden gets a serious look and potentially we have a Bolden Newsome combo.

The notion of two QB’s made both Jay and Joe flinch, but you know its going to be a tough choice given what happened in 2007.

The only thing I don't like about this

Is the idea that we have to wait until AFTER Bama to make the switch. Put the best guy out there for Bama, but show that guy loyalty unless and until he makes dire mistakes. Those mistakes vary depending on the opponent – all else being equal, a fumble against YSU /= a fumble against Bama. I don’t agree with the “Newsome to start against Bama and when he sux put in Bolden” logic. I say make it one of them before YSU, and stick with that guy until its glaringly obvious that he cannot compete.

The point about waiting to start Bolden after Alabama isn't necessarily premeditation

I’m willing to give the coaches the benefit of the doubt here that they will start the best quarterback. A major part of that decision is understanding the game, the playbook and confidence of his teammates. Bolden may be behind in these areas at the beginning of the season but this downside may diminish as weeks go by during the season.

History has shown us that Paterno often lets this play out on the field. The Clark/Devlin decision was made prior to game one and DC rose to the challenge but for every Clark/Devlin battle there’s also been Mills/Seneca, Collins/John Sacca, Tony Sacca/ Bill, Blackledge/Hostettler and for the real old guys Hufnagel/Cooper/Parsons.

My guess is we’ll see more than one starting QB throughout the season and it may not always be pretty but it should be interesting to watch.

I hope you are wrong.

You have to at least bet that Jones won’t consider it until he’s given the opportunity to compete with whoever next season. And Bolden has said everything that makes you believe he’s not afraid of competing so I think he’ll stick… I think we’re safe from transfers until next season.

by Screen Name 20 on Aug 19, 2010 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I see your point but I think for this year at least, he’s already “won” to some degree. He’s going to be at least the 3rd string guy. I think a RS is a huge advantage for Jones but it also says he was the least likely to see playing time this year. To that end, Bolden beat out Jones if only for the role of 3rd string QB, but he did it at a considerable disadvantage not being allowed to graduate early (his HS’s policy apparently).

I would rather Bolden start game 1 then 4,5 or 6 etc.

I think it is a bad situation to have Newsome start Bama then switch to Bolden midseason. I mean when Bolden starts and goes undefeated in the Big Ten, I don’t want to hear casual football fan ranting “We would have been undefeated had Bolden been in all year etc.”

I also don’t think that if he takes some blows in the Bama game that it will crush his confidence. He strikes me as a fighter and will use that as motivation all off season to get better and give them a licking come next September.

What's the possibility of asking Jones

to go off scholarship for the 2011 season, to create more separation? Take a grey shirt? I it’d be slim-to-none if Newsome and McGloin transfer, for depth issues. But is this allowed by NCAA rules?

by psuwxman on Aug 19, 2010 10:40 AM EDT reply actions

It's allowed until he enters classes as a full time student, I don't think it'll happen in this case

PSU did it with Dan White. He was recruited in 89 with John Sacca and Kerry Collins, I believe he gray shirted, came back and wasn’t getting any reps behind the other two so he transferred to Arizona and did well there.

Correct

Once a kid signs a LOI or enrolls in classes, the clock starts. He has five years to play four seasons. You can’t take a greyshirt midway through your career.

Lets assume just the playbook is the issue...

when choosing between Bolden and McGloin or Newsome. Then, can we not also assume we won’t be running advanced playbook the first few weeks – including at Bama. Even with veteran QB’s in the game, when we have “fought in the trenches” type games like OSU, Bama, etc. we tend to have a vanilla offense.

Why not be vanilla with a few advanced plays in there from the get go, including Bama and give Bolden a shot if he has better tools – giving him more time to learn more plays each week. I understand McGloin knows the PB inside and out but that is his only ace in the hole. Same expereince basically, leadership, c’mon, a QB is a QB and one like Bolden doesn’t seem like he lets his huddle call the shots.

So… (from what we’re hearing)
Running Ability – Bolden or Newsome
Pocket Presence – Bolden or McGloin
Footwork – Bolden or McGloin
Mechanics – Bolden or McGloin
Arm Strength – Bolden
Accuracy – Bolden
Touch – Bolden
Experience – Newsome
PlayBook – McGloin

Let’s bring Bolden along now with the same vanilla offense we see at the start of every year and buy him time to learn it all. I want the best athlete at Bama with some grasp on the PlayBook, not the guy who knows the PB inside and out but is half the athlete.

by MSippiNit on Aug 19, 2010 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

we are hearing that stuff about how you have it broken down

that doesn’t mean that is the way it actually is. There is a chance we are not getting the entire story.

by BMAN13 on Aug 19, 2010 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Very true

And I’m no expert for sure, just speculation and hopes on my part. Based on the spring game neither McGloin or Newsome impressed me but it was just a glorified scrimmage. And I haven’t seen Bolden at all. I have full confidence in our coaches’ decisions. Just something about a possible four year starter excites me.
