For Those of You Traveling to Tuscaloosa
If you're anything like me, when traveling to an away game, you like to go out and have a beer or two and hear some live music. Here's a brief guide to noteworthy shows going on in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham on the weekend of Thursday the 9th through Saturday the 11th (I know Thursday isn't technically a weekend day, but whatever, it's a big night for going out around here and I figure some of y'all might roll into the region that early.) I've included some bizarro stuff for those that want to get weird and some more mainstream stuff for those of you that like your entertainment a bit more subdued. There's everything below from surf rock to New Orleans funk & jazz to classic rock to Christian rock to experimental electronic music to jazz vocalists. Hope you find something you enjoy.
As it was mentioned in Mike's We Are Penn State, Egan's Bar in Tuscaloosa (which is all of a block or block and a half from the stadium) always has original live music on game weekends and man oh man have they booked a fun one for the night of Alabama game. Huntsville, Alabama's very own DAIKAIJU, a Japanese monster movie/kabuki/anime inspired surf rock band that is insanely fun live. This is where you'll get to see the weird side of Alabama if you want to. Make sure and catch this one as it appears they aren't headed up north on their current tour. Also, if you're staying in Birmingham on Friday the 10th, they're playing up there at Sipsey Tavern, which is right in the heart of 5 Points South where many of you are probably staying.
So here's a little sample of what they do:
New Orleans legends The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will be in Birmingham at Zydeco on Friday the 10th.
Other shows of interest in the area: Jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon will be in Birmingham on Friday the 10th. (info here)
Classic rock band Kansas will be playing in Tuscaloosa on the 9th & 10th (Thursday and Friday) with the Huxford Symphony (the university's orchestra.) Tickets and info can be found here.
needtobreathe will be in Tuscaloosa at the Bama Theatre on Thursday the 9th at the Bama Theatre if you make it to town early and Christian rock is your thing.
If you're in Birmingham on Thursday and don't mind going to hear a band with an "F-Bomb" in their name, check out Holy F*** at Bottletree in Birmingham. It's Birmingham's most forward thinking venue and one of my favorite music venues on earth (and I've seen shows on multiple continents and something like 20+ states.) Anyway, performing "Super Inuit" the experimental music of Holy F*** (which I feel bad about listing next to the Christian band above, but they're both on Thursday....and hopefully you don't bin this post because of that, because it took me forever to put together):
Lastly, Birmingham's Necronomikids will be playing the September 10th show at Sipsey Tavern with Daikaiju and given that the bands are friends will likely play the Egan's show as well. They also do the surf rock thing, but with a more Eastern vibe. I saw the two bands together at a wedding a year or so ago. FUNNEST. WEDDING. RECEPTION. EVER.:
There's some other stuff I didn't list, but those are the highlights to me (though the Hill Country Review...featuring members of the North Mississippi All-Stars is opening for Tea Leaf Green in B'ham on Thursday.) Anyway, if you want to know more, check out the Birmingham & Tuscaloosa calendar at PollStar.com.

Awesome, thanks Nico!
Very kind. Bottletree just jumped up my Bham list!
Until our defense proves otherwise, it should be presumed they will be excellent.
I've seen some amazing shows at that place...
TV on the Radio
Deerhunter
Zach Galifianakis
Black Lips
Secret Chiefs 3
The Death Set
Art Brut
The Hold Steady
King Khan & the Shrines
Dan Deacon
Dr. Dog
etc….
I've never been to the Bottletree (didn't even know where it was),
but I’ve been to Zydeco and Sipsey Tavern and liked those. Jtothep, these two are within walking distance of your hotel (all up hill on the way, all down hill on the way back – about 4 long blocks to Sipsey and 6 blocks to Zydeco). You would have to cab it to the Bottletree Cafe, but I think cabs are pretty easy to get downtown. Sipsey has Yuengling bottles. I don’t remember if Zydeco carries it.

Bottletree....
…is kind of off on it’s own. I think they were operating on a shoestring when they opened up and got a property on the border of Avondale that’s kind of just among some random businesses that aren’t open at night. It’s safe and all, there’s just nothing else in the immediate vicinity…though the bar Parkside isn’t too far away (also a place you should check out.)
Thanks, Nico. I'll have to check them out.
I usually don’t go out too much in Birmingham because I live in Shelby Co., but I’m always open to finding new places.

As far as I know, but
I go to Margarita Grill in Pelham, though. The old managers of the Superior Grill opened their own place. Best Tex-Mex or whatever kind of food you want to call it in Birmingham!
For the glory
On 119 near 31- used to be Buffalos Cafe
They have live music every night and a great patio.
For the glory
And...
…as was mentioned in another thread:
Bars in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa probably stay open much later than wherever you’re from. In Birmingham, it’s up to the individual bar to decide when to close (there’s one venue in town where shows usually start around midnight even on weekdays) and in Tuscaloosa, they have to be closed by 3am on Friday and Saturday. Enjoy responsibly.
One more thing.
I will likely be at the following of these events if you want to meet up for a beer:
9/9: Holy F*** @ Bottletree in Birmingham
9/10: Dirty Dozen Brass Band @ Zydeco and Daikaiju/Necronomikids @ Sipsey Tavern in Birmingham (the bars are about three blocks away from each other)
9/11: Daikaiju at Egan’s in Tuscaloosa
Drop me a line at rollbamaroll at gmail dot com and we’ll figure it out.
Nothing gets you fired up for some big time football like, "Dust in the Wind."

All we do
handoffs up the middle
we refuse to change
aaaah dust in the wind
3 yards and some dust in the wind

All my dreams
Hayden, Bo and Woody and the old Big Ten
Dust in the wind
3 yards and some dust in the wind
Same old plays
just a forward pass
when its third and long
All we do
handoffs up the middle
we refuse to change
aaaah dust in the wind
3 yards and some dust in the wind
Now don’t hang on
teams must move away from the power I
Prestige slips away
Offenses have to spread the field or the ratings die
aaaaaaa Dust in the wind

The dirty dozen brass band
rocks. If seen them at jazz fest in New Orleans and once here in DC; they kill it. Definitely worth attending if you like n’orleans/brass band music. they throw a fair amount of hip-hop into their songs and also do a great cover of sexual healing.
I wouldn't trust old rooster me neither.
Thanks Nico
Great post and a ton of help. This is the way you earn the respect of PSU fans. Not like bringing up the 1979 Sugar Bowl and asking us to tell you how awesome it was like your buddy Kleph.

The 1979 Sugar Bowl was awesome.
Know why? Because eventually it ended.

No problem
We have a pretty good live music scene down this way and I’m always happy to spread the word about it.
Have you been to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia?
Worth a sidetrip?
Bloggin' at joepasdoghouse.com
I have not
From Birmingham or Tuscaloosa, you’re looking at 2 to 2.5 hours by car to the middle of nowhere. I know there are some legends enshrined there, but can’t speak to the quality of the exhibits.
If we're driving, most of us are coming in from the north
It doesn’t matter if it’s I-65, I-20, or I-59 at this point since it’s a long way on any of those highways. A music sidetrip out to Muscle Shoals or Nashville the day before might be in order.

Depends on where you're coming from.
Although I haven’t lived in the Quad-City (Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia) area in about 15 years, it really is out there. The main road through there is the same road that runs through Memphis, so from Memphis it’s not too bad. There’s not an interstate anywhere near, though, so it’s not an easy detour.

Get ready to hear that song a few times...
…as you walk around campus and once inside the stadium.
Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
"DAIKAIJU"
That band looks pretty damn awesome. The lead guitar player definitely has a style, which in itself is unique these days. I hope they come to Tampa some day.
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
Looking at their website...
…it looks like they were there in March at a place called Cafe Hey, so I imagine they’ll be back at some point.
whoah and the name of the song is Zombie Harem? That's freakin' awesome.
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
Have to plug a post...
…from my friends over at the Bamasphere’s most irreverent blog, Tower of Bammer, about eating and drinking in Tuscaloosa.
I'm late to the party here...
… but I’ll second the love for both The Bottletree (saw that last King Khan and the Shrines show there — super good) and Egan’s (I’ve seen a truckload of shows there over the years; and it was the site of my band’s last show, St. Patty’s Day ’05)
