Penn State Depth Chart, August 29
So, Penn State's depth chart has been released, and for those of you looking for insight on the quarterback race well...I've got some bad news for you.
- Matthew McGloin, Kevin Newsome and Robert Bolden are listed in that order but with a big "OR" next to both McGloin and Newsome's names. Translation? Any of the three could still start Saturday against Youngstown State, though McGloin might have a small edger being listed first.
- Garry Gilliam is your starting tight end. The oft-talked about Brett Brackett is no where to be found in that race.
- Anthony Fera has emerged from Joe Paterno's dog house to take over the top line at punter from Russell Nye.
- Chaz Powell has supplanted Stephon Morris at the starting right cornerback spot.
- Devon Smith is the No. 1 guy in the slot WR spot.
- Silas Redd not listed in the top five running backs.
- Offensive line is: LT Quinn Barham, LG DeOn'tae Pannell, C Doug Klopacz, RG Stefen Wisniewski, RT Lou Eliades.
- Chaz Powell and Devon Smith are tops on kick returns, Justin Brown and Drew Astorino on punt returns.
- Linebackers are OLB Nathan Stupar MLB Chris Colasanti OLB Bani Gbadyu

Lions247 put up a practice report this morning..
-Defensive Line being described as simply “nasty”…..I love it.
-Newsome pushing hard for the starting spot
Excitement is reaching critical mass over the QB controversy.

Redd
I’m guessing, but he tweeted about his knee sparin which breaks a major team rule about players disclosing injury status to the public. I wouldn’t count him out of the 3 deep at the RB position later in the season, but I think he bought a ticket into the doghouse for at least the first couple of games.

I'd bet his redshirt was an easy decision to begin with, even before the injury.

Redd is redshirting?
How did I miss that?

No way he redshirts. Hearing too many good things about him. They redshirted Beachum so Redd could get on the field.
That may be true, but I still think he's kept out unless and until he's needed.
They might not outright say it, but with Royster, Green, and Dukes in front of him, and capable DFCers on the roster, I can see Redd staying off the field the whole season (again, unless he’s needed should the Knee Hating Gods pay a visit to Royster).

same here
I’ve basically heard he showed up in incredible shape, has been playing his butt off, and has made it near impossible for the coaches to RS him. I’d be shocked and disappointed if he takes a RS.
McGloin Despite Them

Why?
We’ve got Green and Royster. What’s the point of waisting a year of the kid’s eligibility if he’s at best RB3? Let those two guys take the bulk of the work this year and then let him back up Green next year and then have 3 whole years as our leading rusher.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
If I had to guess:
Opposing teams can prepare for Royster and Green. There’s ample film of them, so while teams may not be able to stop them every play, they at least know what they’re up against. That changes with Redd. There’s zero film of him against D1 defenses, so he’s an unknown. Throw him into the game, and it might throw off defenses because they don’t know who they’re up against. I’m not a coach, just my two cents.
I'll bet you a nickel or 500 BSD bucks that Redd will redshirt as long as the 3 ahead of him are healthy and successful

I had to look it up, but Royster and OMG 5 star Austin Scott redshirted as freshmen
behind Tony Hunt, Rodney Kinlaw and the awsome Nick Pinchek so says nittanyanthology.com
by Frank O'Brien on Aug 29, 2010 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Austin Scott
Austin Scott redshirted because he got mono 3 or 4 games into the season — it wasn’t due to depth at the position.
my bad, I was looking at the wrong year for Scott
He was starting as a true freshman ahead of Upman and another freshman Tony Hunt.

I don't think that they players can't talk about their own injuries (I don't know team rules),
but the coaches definitely CANNOT comment. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1997 (HIPAA) now prevents coaches and team doctors from commenting about illnesses and injuries without a player’s express consent. It probably works out better in a coach’s mind, except when the dipshits at ESPN/everyone else are trying to get a player update that the coaches aren’t allowed by law to give.
For the glory
HIPAA
Players at most schools sign a preseason waiver for things like HIPAA and FIRPA that allow the coaches and SIDs to disclose relevant injury and academic issues.
JoePa has often in the past used HIPAA as an excuse for not disclosing information,
whether the players have waivers or not. I’m guessing they have to waive FERPA to be able to discuss academic eligibility.

Anyone else think that
the secong group of linebackers is as good as the first. Or better?
Black shoes, basic blues, no names, all game.
are LB's like DL?
Where a rotation begins to keep fresh legs in the game and provide a lot of extra push late in the game? You’ve got to think that a rotation like that will be helpful when a team like Alabama starts trying to ram the ball down our throats in the 4th quarter.
McGloin Despite Them
Preaching the McGospel since Aug. 2nd, 2010
If so, that would be awesome.
If Alabama tries to beat us with the running game, our LB core is like 7 deep. Assuming those guys are pretty much interchangeable, it could be a heckuva show.
by Artiefufkin10 on Aug 29, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Either from Lions247 or other sources
but I’m pretty sure this has been said. We’ve got so many talented LBs capable of starting, that Vanderlinden may be able to have a solid rotation without a drop off in production which is awesome. I’m so excited to see the LBs. I’ve said this a million times, but we may not have the best season, but I think this season is going to be a lot of fun because of things like this. We’ve got so much talent and so many options, it’s incredible, and will be extremely fun to watch. Saturday can’t come fast enough.
Over the last few years LB rotation is limited compared to DL
That may change due to the depth of talent this year. My guess is that the LBs that perform the best on game day will win get the most snaps. See Mauti vs. Michigan in 2008.
The DL rotation is pretty common among the top teams with adequate depth. These guys are asked to take on blockers all day, often getting double teamed so a lot of teams sub liberally on the DL. Although, I believe LJ is more liberal than most.
by Frank O'Brien on Aug 29, 2010 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions
I figured Mauti would have taken over a staring OLB spot by now
But the second string of LBs will probably see as much time on the field as the first.
I don’t put too much stock in McG being listed first; at the same time, I think he’ll get the honor of taking the first snap on Saturday.
by newenglandnittanylion on Aug 29, 2010 2:59 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Mauti
If I had to guess, I’d say they’re going to ease Mauti back into the lineup. The kid seems like he’s going to be a monster, but you don’t want to force him back too quickly after coming back from such a major injury. Also like you said, we have so much talent at LBs, the “2nd string” may really just end up being “1st team, Part II”.
Redd's not in the top 5 because it's the top 3 RB and top 2 FB...
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."
-J.V.Pa.
Probably right...
IDK why you wouldn’t list them separately, though.

I think because the FB positioned is not as defined and the backs are somewhat interchangeable.
Suhey can play any of the positions, just when in the I formation is the FB defined.

it says fifth year senior. Why do Gbadyu and Wagner have them? They are true seniors.

2010 Penn State Depth Chart
(As of August 29)
I think that second line is as important, or more important, in learning something from this list.
Long-snapper
Someone named Emery Etter will be long-snapping.

Hmm
I wonder if there’s any film on him. Maybe a recruiting vid??
The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital.

I wish
sarcasm could be better expressed through typed words, cuz i was just kidding. I remember when there was a recruiting post awhile back that had a vid of Emery chucking balls at a goal post for 10 solids minutes. I think that vid single handedly shattered the Unintentional Comedy Scale.
The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital.
Joe Paterno
that was the video i was talking about.
He his a pretty funny kid too. that video, whether intentional or not, was funny.
He's listed as 6'1", 230
is that undersized for a long-snapper? I honestly don’t know, thought they were more lineman-esque
Great news for Chaz
I hope this means Chaz is that good and not that Morris’ injury is worse than reported. I believe this may be the best PSU secondary in a long time.
No Sczerba is bad news since he's already burned his redshirt
As for Brackett, I’m sure there a plenty of formations where he is the de facto TE in the slot
If his injury is really that bad, he could try for the medical redshirt
but from what I heard, he’s only likely to be out a few weeks.

No Win Situation for QBs
I just hope which ever guy wins the qb job the fans give him a chance. You have a fanbase that’s used to winning, I’m hoping they accept these guys might struggle and not jump all over them with every mistake. I’m looking at you student section.
I remember back in 05 my junior year and the first month of the season every bad pass by Robinson and the know it alls in the stands seemed to think we should be playing this five star kid named Morelli. I think we all know how that turned out.
Hopefully which ever guy gets sent out there gets a fair chance to learn the ropes and take over the job as the starter. I think Jay has earned enough respect at this point for people to believe he knows what he’s doing.
Defense
so is it safe to say that OMG Texas was the best defense Bama faced last year, since they were clearly the best D in the esssss eeeeeee ceeeeeee? I am a girl and don’t have that statistic gene you all have that motivates you to look up stats and file them away in your brain (i.e. lazy about this kind of thing)
If this is so, this could be very interesting.
Joe Paterno - Not Unlike Hugh Hefner
Oh god
You just brought back horrible flashbacks of Mount Man-tits Cody ripping off his helmet and running off the field in celebration while his boobs bounced like 20 gallon water balloons vs. Tennessee, and how that was played over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again on ESPN for the next week. UGH.
by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 29, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions
I highly doubt Texas was the best defense Alabama faced all year.
I think some people have shown the rankings before, but Texas plays in the “I don’t know how to play defense so I’ll just score a bunch of points” conference. The SEC does have a lot of good defensive teams (I know to many of you that’s blasphemy), so I would think that Texas was pretty weak compared to SEC competition.
For the glory
I want to say
that Texas, Florida, and VT were all top 10 in total defense last year. I think Texas was 2nd or 3rd. I don’t think they were as high scoring defense.
by PSUinBOSSton on Aug 29, 2010 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Texas probably was a top 5 defense
but again you’re talking about a pretty weak division that even a mediocre defense could thrive in. Look what happened when they played a team with a good defense in Nebraska, they almost lost the game, and couldn’t put up their Nintendo #’s (and some would say they actually lost that game and won on bad refs).
Clearly...
…the order in which the starters are listed could be alphabetical.
McGloin
Newsome
Yeah, this coaching staff isn't going to leak something like the contested starting QB position
on something as insignificant as a pre-season depth chart. The announcement will come from them (if at all), and very well may not be decided upon until late this week. If anyone is dying to be the first to know who is starting before the game, get to the team gate early and see who gets off the bus first (although I’d laugh my ass off if they tried to stick McGloin, Newsome, AND Bolden in the front seat of a converted school bus just to screw with people).
by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 29, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions
I just hope they have made a decision behind the scenes
It seems silly to only give your starting QB 33% of the work with the first team during game week.
Even if they haven't
If they think any of the three could be used in a starting position, is there really any harm in giving them all equal time in a game setting against Youngstown State? No offense to YSU, but they aren’t in any way even close to the level of Alabama.
I don't think it hurts you in that game
but you are taking away experience from an already inexperienced QB. Meanwhile, McElroy, Stanzi, and whoever Qb’s Temple(lazy on my part), are already experienced, and receiving 80% of the first team practice time. (I am ignoring Kent State in this conversation, because i assume they can be defeated with Anthony Fera at QB.)
But how much will they really lose out on is my point?
You could put them in with the 5th string O-line (which is a collection of a bunch of fat drunk guys from a tailgate outside the stadium, put in pads) and stick them into the game against YSU to make it challenging, but that would be dangerous, and they still probably wouldn’t get any more valuable experience then they would playing against our own defense in practice (again, no offense to the Penguins, but I’m guessing their D isn’t going to be like ours)
Did not realize....
…that’s how it was meant.
