Mark Ingram Suffers Knee Injury

It's never good news to hear that a player has been injured, but this will certainly make Nittany Lion fans choke back a little smile. Alabama's reigning Heisman-Trophy-winning running back suffered a knee injury in practice on Monday.

Alabama running back Mark Ingram suffered a knee injury late in Monday's practice, coach Nick Saban announced in a statement Tuesday, and has been ruled out for Saturday night's season opener against San Jose State

Ingram, who last year became the first Crimson Tide player to win the Heisman Trophy, had "an arthroscopic procedure" done Tuesday morning, according to the statement.

"It was a situation where everyone involved thought it would be better to take care of now, so he would not have any issues with it later in the season," Saban said.

All that is known for now is that Ingram will sit out week one. After that he's day-to-day so there's a good chance he could come back when Penn State travels to Tuscaloosa on September 11.

Alabama is still Alabama, and they are loaded with talent. But playing them without Mark Ingram, or even Mark Ingram at 50%, only helps Penn State's chances.

That's really too bad

I mean that sincerely. There’s no smile I’m trying to suppress.

I have no personal knowledge of Ingram, but he really does seem like a good kid and a humble guy. I hope it’s not bad and he can recover fully.

I agree, you never want to see a guy like Ingram go down like that. I have never followed him, but the little I’ve seen has impressed – both on and off the field.
-Here’s to a quick and full recover
Additionally, it is no good for PSU; you never want to play a team that isn’t at full strenght (or as close to full as possible in a sport like this).
It’s a bummer all around.

im kind of upset

if he doesnt play and we win that game, it just gives fodder to the idea that we only won because they didnt have ingram, or even that he was coming off an injury. Id like to play them at full strength, even if we lose.

Come on folks

Stop talking like a PSU upset of Bama is inevitable, it reeks of homerism. When the game happens, the guys who are healthy will line up. Ingram or not, Bama is going to be favored by a healthy margin. On the road with either a frosh or walk-on QB, it’s still a long shot. Are you also going to feel worse if we lose to a team with Ingram at less than 100%?

by gcdyersb on Aug 31, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats the point...

Its anything BUT inevitable. That’s why it would be a let down to not have him playing at full strength. It’s not that often we as Penn State really feel like a pretty big underdog against a national opponent. Even when we’re underdogs to ohio state its rarely in such a manner that NOBODY things its even possible and that game is more familiar. This is one of those few times.

disagree completely

I dont find thinking your team is capable of winning a game to be akin to being a homer. No one here is talking like its inevitable, but I also think most people here find that if PSU were to win that game, it wouldnt be as shocking to us as it would most people. In addition to playing with 9 new (possibly 10) starters on defense, losing their heisman trophy winner would go along way in making that win possible.

Im of the opinion, though not likely, there is a shot that we could beat Alabama even with Ingram. You have to have that opinion or you’re not a fan.

And anyway, whats wrong with a fan being a homer? isnt that supposed to be the case. Being a homer is only a bad thing when you are paid to be objective, I’m a penn state fan, i don’t need to be objective.

fair enough

I’m not out to attack anyones idea of being a fan. I just don’t find it to be something to be looked down upon to think there is an outside shot of beating Alabama with or without Ingram. Am I going printing T-shirts commemmorating the victory already, no thats silly and misguided. But I do think theres a possibility it could happen.

That's not the point

I’m all for optimism. But let it be settled on the field. I just don’t like posts making hypotheticals about how the upset will be less special if Ingram isn’t there. There’s only one thing that matters: scoreboard. And that matters once the score is in the books.

If 1986 was today, I’d say the same thing. The game is on the field, not paper. Miami is favored, but let’s see how it goes when the game is played. If Testaverde’s arm falls off, it don’t matter. All that matters: scoreboard.

by gcdyersb on Aug 31, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

you don't make a lot of sense.

We can discuss hypotheticals here all we want, that is what this is for. IF Alabama is without Ingram then it does make the chance of PSU victory better, you cannot say otherwise. And yes, nationally it would be discussed if an Ingram-less Alabama were to lose to PSU.

by BMAN13 on Aug 31, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

The pundits can say what they want

a win is a win. OSU fans claimed in 2008 that Pryor “barely fumbled.” The reply was simple: scoreboard. Let people think what they want. Bama doesn’t care McCoy was injured, they still won the NT game.

As for Ingram’s injury, I’m not convinced it will be a huge factor. The fulcrum in this game is the PSU QB vs. Bama D. Bama has plenty of depth and experience on offense, and one player will not prevent it from doing the majority of what it will do.

you'll be amazed at how fast

the tides defense is from sideline to sideline and how deep we are in the front seven. Nico Johnson started last year at the Will LB after Hightower went down. He has just been beaten out by Jerrell “I dont know where I got the laptop” Harris. Think about that for a second. Our defense replaces 9 "starters(depending on how that is defined " and one of the returning players(Nico was a 5 star recruit) is beaten out. We are very very deep.

by mobilematt12 on Aug 31, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, we understand

that Bama has a lot of talent stepping in to replace 9 (give or take) starters. But that’s still 6 NFL draft picks that had a full 2 years starting together to replace. There’s no reason Alabama won’t be good to excellent on D, but the odds are against this being the #1 national defense as it has been.

Let me give you something for comparison. PSU had all 3 of its linebackers from last year drafted (one was a walk on, the other a ‘mere’ 3 star recruit). If there’s one area where PSU has depth, it’s LB. But it would be highly optimistic to think three new players will step in and immediately match their high level of play. No, I’m not worried, but just because the replacements have more stars doesn’t mean they’ll all work well together from day 1.

by gcdyersb on Aug 31, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

The "returning starter" meme

has been played ad nauseum. I can name 5 guys right now that either started games or played as much as the starter. Dareus, according to the media is not a starter. Nico Johnson Started when Hightower went down and is not considered a “starter.” Upshaw plays the Jack LB and did all year last year but not considered a “starter” Hightower was a “starter” before he was injured. Barron was a “starter” Chapman was not a “starter” but rotated with Cody. Get my point? This defense is not green. Our secondary is a concern but not with regard to talent. Dre Kirkpatrick is a star waiting to happen and his freakish size and speed will cause match up problems for everyone.

Thank you

for enlightening me with all the hype of these players. Whispers are that Michael Mauti and gerald Hodges are backup LBs on our team that would start for alot of DI programs, Ollie Ogbu may be replacing Jared Odrick, but he rotated in alot, get my point? Robert Bolden was one of the top 3 QBs in the country last year and Newsome was top 10 with freakish speed. Graham Zug once took 5 pieces of fish and three loaves of bread and fed everyone at Beaver Stadium.

I can say anything I want, as well, about alot of guys on Penn State’s roster as well, but we wont know how they do until they play the game. I guess Im not as naive as you.

So you are telling me

this defense will be as good or better than a defense that had two years of absolute domination? Football is played on the field, not on paper. There is no reason why Bama can’t have a very good D, but let’s just say I’ll buy into it when I see it.

Aside from that, every defense rotates players. Devon Still, who will be replacing 1st round pick Jared Odrick, has plenty of experience. But I’d be on as much crack as a Florida Gator fan if I told you Still was guaranteed to match or exceed Odrick’s level of play. Multi-year starters are usually there for a reason.

I never said there would be a big dropoff

only that a dropoff is likely if not inevitable. Like it or not, there were a few games last season where Bama needed every ounce of that #1 defense to pull out the win. I can tell you from following PSU that a top 20 or top 10 defense is not sufficient to win games the way Bama did last year. I like your odds if this D is top 5, but we need to see how it plays out. If the SEC is as deep as it should be, a team with ‘only’ a top 20 defense will be vulnerable.

And preseason rankings, come on. Ohio State is ranked top 5 every year. If you think they are always right, then you are suggesting OSU is never overrated when always ranked top 5.

by gcdyersb on Aug 31, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Top end speed is nice...

but can go to waste unless the defense can make quick reads and react. Last year’s Bama defense was great at that. One breaking in a new unit, might not be there yet. That doesn’t mean they won’t be good or great by the end of the season, but the second game is a place where they might be had.

Indeed

The NCAA released rulings on Jeremiah Masoli today, so I’m thinking news on Dareus comes soon. Hopefully it will be more positive. Given that the coaches have been playing him with the 1st team I wasn’t too worried about it, but now that it’s crunch time I’m really crossing my fingers. I would hate for him to be ineligible.

I don't know.

It depends on what he says. I think Dareus might have panicked once the NCAA Infractions Committee indicated the impact of whatever offense was committed on his career…

If nothing else, he’ll be drafted by the Dallas Cowboys…

For all the crap we give Wil Wheaton, he can still tackle better than Asante Samuel...

dont know how i could have forgotten that the same man who recovered a fumble in that game is going to be starting for your defense this year?

All is lost, we should call joepa and tell him to cancel the game, they have a player who recovered a fumble. we are doomed. 700-0 alabama. how will we ever recover a fumble, look at all the experience they have. I mean the ball is loose, and they have a guy who, in the past, in an actual game, has fallen on top of the ball and recovered it for his team. And i thought WE were Linebacker U.

This whole argument is a little ridiculous

Both teams do have inexperience. I think the gist of what mobilematt and voice of reason are saying is that the new starting LBs and defensive linemen have played a whole lot of snaps, despite not being “starters.” But of course they’re not quite as experienced as those starters were, and there is simply no denying the lack of experience in the defensive backfield. Just trying to get the point across that calling them “backups” last year is a little misleading without saying that experience isn’t an issue at all.

But...

I forgot to get to why this whole argument is kind of silly. I came over here to talk about my Bama homer take on Ingram’s injury, and I don’t think this is an appropriate place for Bama fans to come touting how great and awesome all our players are.

It sounds like it is not too severe

And I think he’ll be here for the Florida game, but I seriously doubt he will be ready to play against State College. That said, Richardson should be quite good (no, not “better than Ingram”, but still good), and already has a pretty good amount of game experience. As some other posters have pointed out, I would look more to the Penn State offense vs Alabama defense to be the key to this game. I’m much more worried about our green DBs giving up big plays and our entirely new special teams players making mental errors than I am about our backup RB.

I'm really excited to see our D vs. your O

So I’m kind of disappointed to hear about Ingram. We’ve got a relatively young D with a ton of talent, which should make that match-up very fun to watch.

And we both have similar fears for the opposite. We’ve got proven WRs, some linemen, and backs, but some of the line and of course QB will be green. So in a way, while this is also a fear, that should also be an interesting matchup.

by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 31, 2010 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

For my money

All of college football writing should drop any references to ‘has to replace_____.’ It’s very nearly as relevant to list last year’s players not playing this year as it is to list 1970’s players not playing this year. It’s the biggest effing crutch and impediment to original thinking in CFB blogistan.

The returning experience you cite is far more pertinent.

Until our defense proves otherwise, it should be presumed they will be excellent.

by jtothep on Aug 31, 2010 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

the problem with "has to replace _____"

is that often the perception of a team, especially preseason, is based off their performance last year, but the makeup of the team is usually quite different.

In this case “They are returning national champions, but they have to replace _” is not that invalid.

by The JuggerNitt on Aug 31, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably not so bad

If it only took a day to get the surgery scheduled, it’s gotta be just a scope or removing a bit of torn meniscus. Torn meniscus is in no way good—it cushions the knee joint—but it’s not a serious structural problem like an MCL or ACL. That said, I tore an ACL, MCL and meniscus all at the same time and years later it’s the cartilage that still bugs me. Hopefully this won’t be a chronic issue for Ingram.

by gcdyersb on Aug 31, 2010 1:21 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, had my meniscus done two years ago.

piece of cake, even though I limped for 3 months. i was walking on it in two days but it sure wasn’t 100% for about a year. Tell me about minor scope. When he went in he found a bunch of torn/shredded cartilege too. This is a big bummer for the kid and I hope all is well for him. It is still usually 3-4 weeks anytime stitches are involved, just for the swelling to go down is usually 2.

by BMAN13 on Aug 31, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Not going to say this doesn't hurt

but you all will still have to deal with Trent Richardson. Whispers inside the program have been saying that he is better than Ingram. He is a stud. You will also get introduced to the heir apparent, Eddie Lacy who could start just about anywhere in the country. And running behind our offensive line is really the key thing here. We are very good in the trenches. Does this increase PSUs chances…yes…but not by much.

as they beat us fair and square (19-17). But, PSU has more than a few four star rated recruits also. Last years class was impressive for example with 6 ESPN 150 players and 9 four star recruits total. Bama hits hard also, our QB was knocked out last year as we lost (21-16) in a hard fought game to the better team. Injuries are part of the game, but regardless, this should be quite a game—look forward to it.

a lot like an Ohio State fan. Your third stringers would dominate on any other team, and so on and so forth. Sometimes, just sometimes, guys are backups for a reason.

As for Richardson, yeah, we saw last season. The guy is a beast. No surprise there.

Let me just say two words: Curtis Dukes. Third string tailback. I haven’t ever seen him play a down, but anonymous internet rumors assure me he is like a hypothetical cross between an M1A1 Abrams, a locomotive and a cheetah. Who needs to see a player play actual football when we can just project in our minds how awesome he is?!? And if our third stringer is an indestructible bionic freak, image what the backup is like!

Just so were all on the same page...

Are we allowed to consider any factors that might lead us to winning the game, or is the final answer Alabama is so much better that we might as well not even watch the game?

Alabama lost ten starters on defense? No, no, no, we had have 12 new players, several of which never played a down, but all of whom are better than anybody you have, ever had, or ever will have.

Alabama might not have their starting tailback, who just won the Heisman Trophy? Don’t kid yourselves, Ingram was probably not going to start anyway, as two other guys we have are at least as good as him, if not better…

You do recognize we’re not Mississippi State, right? Alabama is going to have to play a good football game to beat Penn State. I suspect they will, but if you think your going to run the B team out there and beat us by 30 points, you might be in for a disapointing day.

He’s talked to teammates who say Green is fine, and should be out on Sat. I mean they might sideline him as a precaution (which I totally agree with), but the injury apparently isn’t as bad as it’s been made out to be.

I like Brackett a lot as a player and person

But it is somehow worrisome to me that Royster wasn’t named a captain. I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but it doesn’t make me feel good. Wether he didn’t step up or his teammates didn’t think as highly of him…whatever.

I freakin love Ogbu. I think he is a lot better than people credit him for. I guess he was a little bit in JO’s shadow.

OK

a lot of players look awesome against overmatched teams. Take this example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVej08Kdu-Y&feature=related

Michigan has a terrible D, PSU’s O-line is awesome, and the game is pretty much over at this point. I also have some nice footage of Royster destroying FIU if you are interested!

Nothing against Richardson—he looks like a fast, strong beast of a tailback—but highlight reels are not a strong argument for much of anything. Keep the good runs, omit the fumbles and 4 yard losses, and most guys look pretty awesome.

"ANGER AT SEC ARRGGHH!!!"

dude I was just saying the kid had a lot of hype coming out of school and he did a good job as a back up and had a solid freshman season – yes there are plenty of good football players that come from outside the south players like, oh I don’t know

Mark Ingram – we recruited him out of Michigan

So if the recruiting rankings make you ornery then I will just say that the man showed himself capable of taking the reigns last year – I’m actually trying to be pretty diplomatic haha

Are you concerned that I don't think your team is good?

I get it, Alabama is good. I think that the disconnect we’re having here is that this is the second time in ten months where we’ve played an SEC team that was totally convinced that Penn State was total dog shit.

Respect is a two way street. This “ANGER SEC ARRGGHH” thing you’re talking about is a function of demanding that I bow down before the brilliance of your back up tailback, or some silly freshman that got an 965 on his SAT, while at the same time figuring that a fifth year senior tailback that is set to break our all time rushing record has no chance of doing anything.

when I said “hopefully we’ll be able to win with Richardson as the main back” I’m sorry you translasted that as me doubting your team while also seeing that as a dig at your senior runningback

and anyone who acts like we don’t respect Penn State isn’t a big college football fan – great program, tradition, historic rivalry, and all that jazz – yea we think we’re better, but dude, we’re Alabama

we think we’re better than everybody – college football insanity is kind of our thing

You're not considering the fact

that their 3rd string tailback no one has seen play before would start over Royster and 95% other D-I starters. Also, if Richardson had started last season, he would have won like a Double Heisman because he’s better than Ingram! Also, SEC speed.

Usually when a team has all around dominant running backs, it’s related to the O-line being dominant. But that would be too logical for this discussion.

Oh, come on now

Logic still lives in this discussion! And I for one, would love to hear about Bama’s Oline. When they have the ball, this is the number one matchup at play here. You can see from my sig that I think our defense will be excellent. LJ’s got an injury-free 2-deep at all four Dline positions, and 3-deep at some. Our secondary is more experienced, more aggressive and taller than ever before (yeah, ever), and we’ve got 6 dudes in the mix for LBU, our #weakest# position.

But, Florida’s defense was top ten last year, too. I wanna see how we can fare better than they did, and Bama’s Oline is the key.

Until our defense proves otherwise, it should be presumed they will be excellent.

If we get penetration (grow up) we can keep the scoring low. Of course, if ‘bama eats up the Penn State O-line, we still probably won’t score enough.

We return 3 starters on the O-line

who all did quite well at opening gaps for our RBs last year. Pass protection was alright but not as consistent. It sounds like that element will improve this year. DJ Fluker will be a new starter at RT. He was a highly touted recruit but still looked green during the spring game as he was consistently being overmatched by Dareus. From what I’ve heard (and yes, we will have to wait to see actual gameplay to know anything for sure), he has made a lot of progress during fall camp.

Your guess is as good as ours

I think we’ll see all three guys play this weekend. There are certain things Joe likes and dislikes with all three guys.

Newsome is a great runner and can run the option well, but he’s good poor mechanics and not very accurate in throwing.

McGloin isn’t very mobile, but he’s smart. He has good mechanics, but not the best arm strength.

Newsome has great mechanics and a great arm, but he’s a true freshman so his playbook knowledge is limited.

I think ultimately the job will fall to Bolden when he gets up to speed, but Newsome will still see a lot of playing time to mix things up and keep defenses guessing.

It'll be a group decision

But like I said, I think they want to see all three guys play this Saturday. I would guess for the Alabama game Joe is not going to play a freshman. He’ll put his eggs in Newsome’s basket and go with him. If Newsome struggles, we may see McGloin. If McGloin struggles he’ll give Bolden a shot.

by BSD on Aug 31, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Regardless...

of the QB situation. I’ll be shocked if you don’t see PSU try and win a very low scoring field position type game. PSU will try and bank on a tight game going there way. It won’t be a blow out unless PSU’s QB play is awful and there are a ton of turnovers.

If only I had an enemy bigger than my apathy. . .

by Esteban d' Amur on Aug 31, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

PSU Defense

I think everyone is selling the PSU defense short in this game. Everyone but Odrick returns on the D-Line, and Still replaces him after playing a ton last year. Everyone returns in the secondary and Astorino is 100% now. We’ve got six players at linebacker that can start anywhere in the country. Joe indicated he’s not the least bit worried about Linebacker.

I think this defense can hang with anyone. If they can hold ’Bama under 20 points, PSU has a chance. If they can force some turnovers to set up easy scores, PSU can win.

by BSD on Aug 31, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree...

but if PSU has a the kind of game where they turn the ball over a couple of times inside their own 30 or its a ton of three and outs, it could get ugly. I think PSU will be in the game with a shot to win it late in the fourth quarter.

I'm with Fooge

Ingram out—if he is—is big news, but there may be 5 other match-up battles that will have more relevance to the game’s outcome.

Beat the Penquins!

Until our defense proves otherwise, it should be presumed they will be excellent.

UA - 7 billion

PSU – 7 billion and 2 (safety)

19-12, Bama

Bama either misses an XP or gets a safety, your pick. PSU has opportunities to capitalize on a couple of turnovers and several big plays, but settles for field goals. Bama takes advantage of two of its red zone chances for TDs. Game, set, match.

I don’t see a blowout like the 34-17 score you predict since both defenses should match up well against the opposing offenses. Of course, if Bama gets rolling early it’s not out of the question. Momentum on home field can be a big factor, especially since I have no confidence the PSU QB(s) can handle the pressure of getting out of a hole.

Missing XP more likely

I will be holding my breath anytime a Bama player has to kick the ball

I'm also in the low scoring camp

I think something along the lines of 16-10. Basically I think this will be a running game by both sides. I don’t think either teams’ passing game will get much done against the opposing defenses, and so the clock will continue to run nearly the entire game. Games like that aren’t set up to have 51 points scored in them.

Plus, I mean both teams right now have Heisman watch RBs on them, and one of those teams has a current Heisman trophy winner (granted he is injured, so won’t be 100%, if in the game at all, but supposedly the backup is just as good, right?). How does that not turn into a running game by both teams?

agreed...

no way the total gets much over 30 and I can see it going either way.

Always pick the under when PSU is playing.

That goes double for PSU/Alabama games.

There were three games in the 80’s series where the winning team scored less than 10 points.

A really easy way to lose money is to ever use the following phrases involving a PS game:

“I’ll take PS and give the points.” or “I’ll take the over.”
