FILM VAULT
Oh yeah.
It's out of sequence and has no sound, but it's still awesome. 1969. #5 Penn State 15, Syracuse 14.
Part 1:
Part 2:
Part 3:
I haven't finished watching it yet. I've only watched part 1 and already Hall of Famer Mike Reid (#68) has pwned Syracuse's quarterback and offensive line for a sack. He also ran down their runningback from behind. Greatest DT ever. I think I saw Hall of Famer Onkotz (should be #35) crush some runningback but it's hard to tell who's who. Maybe it was Ebersole. Other players so far have included quaterback Chuck Burkhart (#22), Hall of Famer Lydell Mitchell (#23), and Hall of Famer Franco Freaking Harris (#34).
This footage has been up since May and I only found it tonight. It is sweet.
Now for a little game description. Syracuse jumped out to a 14-0 lead at halftime, with the help of great punt returns. Joe said after the game, "I told our kids at halftime that I didn't care if we won or lost, but that they would find out something about themselves as men in the second half." Penn State, of course, would rally to score 15 in 30 minutes and was not challenged again that year. Syracuse would not score another point in that game or in any other game against Penn State ever.* They were also doomed to spend eternity in an icy hell north of the civilized world.**
Enjoy and All Hail Mike Reid.
*-Not actually true. But it may as well be true, right?. Suck it, Ben Schwartzwalder.
**-True.

Nice find Rambler, thanks for sharing
Franco’s loping gait makes him easy to pick out even if you can’t see the numbers. I love how Mike Reid explodes out of his stance right into the chest of the guy across from him. This is what Odrick must have been talking about when he said he wanted to be more violent.
But dude, the punt coverage in the first half looked like 2009 all over again.
It's typical slow start PSU.
Defense is fine, offense stinks, special teams blow it until defense gives up a score or two, it takes several quarters to fix things but things are fixed.
My word, it’s been the same for forty years.
And it still amazes me how much football changes in a decade or two. By 1981 or so you can see what I mean. And some people really think Joe can’t keep up with the changes in CFB…
P.S. It’s 1:10 AM and Mike Reid is still a man.

This is no kidding...
I once saw Reid burst through between the guard and center on an extra point and block it with his thigh pad! (Wish I could remember the game). Don’t remember a bobble of the snap. He was the most explosive guy off the ball ever. I used to think he was offsides because he was so quick. He came to PSU as a fullback/MLB. I truly believe for quickness and speed in the first 15-20 yards, he was beyond Arrington! (Of course, he wasn’t that much heavier than Arrington!) Reid was also an Eastern Conference heavyweight wrestling champion.
With all due respect to Odrick, Alford, etc., we have had many great DL. I even include Millen in that group. Funny, I never liked Millen when he played for PSU and the Raiders, and I dislike him more now. However, I have to admit, he was good. I think the closest DT to Reid, in terms of quickness, strength an ability to truly blow up a play, was Bruce Clark.

Mike Reid is the best defensive player ever to play at PSU.

The best Mike Reid play I ever saw was.....
Beethoven at the Johnstown War Memorial in 1970.
I liked him on the Country Music Awards!
Guess State College wasn’t near enough country for Mike Reid.

For a Touchdown?
Can Abbrederis shoot the long three and effectively distribute the ball to his big men?

For all the crap we give Wil Wheaton, he can still tackle better than Asante Samuel...

When football was a man's sport.
Syracuse’s kicker nails the extra point, Steve Smear runs through and totally plasters him after the kick is away. No flag!

Smear with a great TFL.
He doesn’t get enough recognition.
