Michigan Hires Hoke
This is just too funny. Les Miles disses them, again. So they hire Hoke. I don't know about you, but Michigan has been pretty entertaining to watch in the past few years. I hope it continues to be as comedic.
I don't have much else to say about this, but no one reads Fanshots. Is that still true? Someone will still probably post this news somewhere else. I don't care, just wanted to put it out there.

THOSE WHO STAY WILL BE GRADUATES
The freshmen may get to play in a bowl game three years from now.
All the magazines are saying that terrible is the new horrible
Much as UM fans will complain about this
because mgoBrian has been telling them how terrible is/would have been for 3 years now, Brady Hoke has been a great position coach (those OMG AWES0M3! Michigan O-lines of the mid to late 90s…yeah, that was Hoke) and vastly improved two mid majors during his head coaching career.
Hoke will succeed if he can recruit Ohio like Bo and Lloyd (early in his tenure as opposed to later), he will be late-tenure Lloyd if he can’t. Late tenure Lloyd owned MSU, ND, and PSU and had perennial top 25 teams. This may suck for us.
I've got the brains. You've got the looks. Let's make lots of money.
I'll believe that
when I see it.
He has 2 years to get that trainwreck cleaned up before we continue the Wolverine clubbing.

I'm with you
I’ve heard the argument that Bloke was a great positions coach and he’s done ok where he is now, but I don’t buy it. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t see them shooting back into position for Big Ten champs in a year or two. Plus, I think the photoshops are gonna be awesome. I mean, come on!

Where has Brady Hoke ever not been successful?
This is certainly a much bigger challenge than he’s ever faced before because last I checked, sweatervest still had Ohio on lockdown, but the guy has been a great position coach and a very good mid-major head coach.
I've got the brains. You've got the looks. Let's make lots of money.
I would have taken another season of potential strife with RichRod over this
They were at least trending upwards. Hoke would still have been available a year from now. I think their athletic director is probably not having the greatest time right now.
All the magazines are saying that terrible is the new horrible
Why are people down on Hoke?
His resume seems legit. I know nothing else about him.
Dear Big Ten, nothing about your boring landscape, plain women, or two national championships in 40 years is legendary.

Don’t know much about it, but I do think that taking a mid major from bad to good is at least somewhat different than taking a brand name school from mediocre to excellent (which is what UM fans understandably want/expect).
Also, wasn’t he pretty mediocre when he was coaching at Ball St?
That said, he comes from a defensive background, right? That’s got to at least sound good to UM fans.
Yeah, he was fairly mediocre at BSU.
He did lead a 12-2 season in 2008, but then again, they got beat up in their last two games.

I wonder
if Mich would have held onto RR for one more yr if they knew JH and LM weren’t available….

Knowing Michigan
they probably had their usual delusion that any candidate would jump to coach them.
RR would have done OK next year in all likelihood. He probably wasn’t ever going to be great, but now they are looking at another rebuilding year.
There are enough candidates on the staff right now
that it shouldn’t be an issue. They would really, really, really have to piss everyone on the staff off in order to get to this level of derp.
I mean, its definitely possible, and people have done more damage with less, but come on- I don’t think that Curly and Spanier would hire a Rich Rod type.

Ball State.
Except for one season that was courtesy of what was literally the worst schedule in college football that year (and one that ended in a bowl loss anyway), he was mediocre.

It's Balls Taint, come on
Bad schedule just evens out the lack of name recognition for the program. It looks like he basically rebuilt the program over 5-6 years.
The only problem is that Michigan will expect a turnaround in 2-3. Not gonna happen if he goes back to an offense that uses more than one player.
I dunno
Rich Rod left him a pretty full cupboard with which to do anything his heart desires…
by psuphysicist on Jan 11, 2011 5:54 PM EST up reply actions
if he wants it, yes
But will he keep running an offense that will fully utilize RR’s recruits? RR had good offensive talent when he came in, but decided his ego was more important than using what was available to him.
I'm sorry, I meant that very sarcastically
Yes there is some talent on the offensive side of the ball. But a very, very specific type of talent. He could not do anything he wants- He can play RichRod spread or he can watch helplessly as his boys get pounded week in and week out.

They were bad before he got there and he took them to about their typical niche if maybe a little worse.

He didn’t “vastly” improve two mid-majors during his career. He’s had one very good year at SDSU and, record wise, he was actually below Ball State’s typical standards.
This may suck for us, but it will take at least five years. Michigan fans think this isn’t a rebuilding job; this hire proves it is.

Do not agree.
BSU had a great year with a senior QB who developed wonderfully and a team stocked with seniors. They were not a good team before that year, and he bolted after that perfect storm and the team got worse again because it was completely bare of talent left behind.
SDSU may have gotten better with him, but it was a pretty short stint with another coaches players. I don’t think he was there long enough for us to say he upgraded the program. He may have proved the last coach was underperforming.

Aww yes, Hayden Fry, maker of men and the greatest CFB coach ever.
Hey Rambler, How’d Fryboy Chuck Long do at SDSU?
by Frank O'Brien on Jan 11, 2011 7:31 PM EST up reply actions
I don't really care if you hate Iowa.
It is, however, sad when you let your hatred for an entire state put words in my mouth. Fry was a great molder of men, but I’m pretty sure I never called him the greatest CFB coach ever.
Moving on, how did Alvarez do at Wisconsin? Or Snyder at KSU? Or Stoops at Oklahoma?

Hate's a bit strong, mild destain is probably better
I’m curious as to the relevence of the Frystache doing the hokey-pokey with Brady Hoke going to Michigan on a Penn State site. I get the Hoke(y) thing but you can save that stuff for your friends of the pants.
I’ve lived in San Diego for a while now and a lot of my friends are Aztec alums and some are pretty serious sports fans. They had great expectations for Chuck Long when he came here, he was 9-27 in three years and their program has really struggled until this year. Hoke was moving them in the right direction and everyones a little bent about him taking off. Although, Hoke made it clear Michigan was/is his dream job.

MainLion posted a picture of the hokey-pokey, so I posted a picture of Fry doing the hokey-pokey in Michigan’s locker room. This is BSD, dude. Do you hate tangents all of a sudden?

by ReadingRambler on Jan 12, 2011 8:44 AM EST up reply actions
I'm just not sure why Hoke is being bashed
Sure the guy’s not real pretty but that doesn’t make him a bad coach. Like I said, there was a lot of excitement around SDSU last fall and a lot of hope that Hoke was taking them in the right direction after a dozen years of failure by guys like Iowa’s Chuck Long. I’m loathe to see Hoke succeed at Michigan and SDSU return to floundering.
I still appreciate the tangents here at BSD, just not so much Iowa.
by Frank O'Brien on Jan 12, 2011 6:34 PM EST up reply actions
That video was more to do with the hokey-pokey than Iowa, but ok (I would have posted a video of Alvarez doing the hokey-pokey in Wisconsin if there was one).
Moving on, however, the main reason for Hoke being bashed is the fact that he wouldn’t have been considered if he wasn’t a Michigan Man of Michigan or whatever. The evidence doesn’t seem to make up for that.
And who knows, maybe Long would have been better if he had actually coached alongside Hayden instead of just playing for him.

I have absolutely no knowledge of this guy
but does anyone know what kind of offense he runs? Please tell me it’s one that doesn’t involve having one player be your entire offense, I’m not ready for the Michigan schadenfreude to end yet. And also, let him keep Gerg. More want in the second request than the first.

Wow, yet more horrible planning on the AD's part
Do they have anywhere near the type of players to pull that off? From what I saw from this year, it’d be a bloodbath.
OC Al Borges is going with Hoke from SDSU
Borges was OC at Auburn previously, runs pro style. SDSU has a hot, young back that made the offense go this year. Maybe he can convert those spread QBs into tailbacks.
