Tamba Hali: Pro Bowler
Veteran linebacker [and Penn Stater] Tamba Hali, who led the AFC in sacks in 2010, and rookie safety Eric Berry were late additions to the NFL’s all-star game after the Super Bowl participants were decided Sunday.

and it wasn't that long ago
that people were calling Hali a bust. I’d say a premier pass rusher is well worth a first round pick. Hopefully Maybin experiences the same thing.
I'm on the Internet cause I'm an Internet thug.
Hali was never as bad as Maybin his first two years, though...
Hali also was Tamba Hali. HE WAS GOING TO BE AWESOME NO MATTER WHAT HE DID.

As far as what I can find...
Hali had 8 sacks his first year, 7.5 his second year, and 3 his 3rd year.
The 3 is probably what triggered all the “bust” talks.
Hali went on to record 8.5 sacks in 2009. The next year, he had double digit sacks for the first time since his last year at Penn State.
Maybin has NADA. I repeat, NADA.

I still wonder if Hali gets a cut of Jared Allen's salary with the Vikings
Allen parlayed one monster season where Hali was getting double teamed every down into a huge contract. I always thought Tamba deserved a chunk of it

Agree.
I really think he, Wake and Poz should have been first picks for this thing.
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."
-J.V.Pa.
I think the knocks on Poz - rightfully or not - were
1. bad team
2. no interceptions
3. no forced fumbles
4. 2 sacks
Third in the league in tackels and fourth in solo tackles is great, but people and players remember the big plays.
That 2004 team.
Michael Robinson, Levi Brown, Robbie Gould, Tamba Hali, Derek (Cameron) Wake, Dan Connor, Poz, and Jeremy Kapinos were all starters on that team and all are still significant players in the NFL. The best Super Bowl moment was by another starter—Jay Alford—who is now a free agent.
What’s funny is that (1) this team was awful and (2) If you told me in 2004 that eight starters would have successful careers seven years later I would have bet $100 one of those players would have been Alan Zemaitis.

and i would definitely bet $100 that Gould would still be stacking groceries.
"Baseball is like church. Many attend; few understand." - Leo Durocher
It was easy to tell that Gould would be a better NFL kicker than college kicker
huge leg, deadly accurate from straight on, not so good from an angle. Once he got to the NFL where pretty much everything is a straight on kick, he was good

I wouldn't call that team awful
I would call that team a little luck and/or better QB play away from going at least 9-2. I’ll always wonder how that season would’ve gone differently if the abysmal roughing the punter call against Boston College never happened

No way does that team beat Wisconsin
and they probably don’t beat Ohio State in Columbus either, but other than that, every game was very winnable

a little luck =
- An offensive line that could actually block. Seriously, you think it’s bad now…
- A wide receiver corps that was more than just Mark Rubin and a bunch of stiffs.
- A quarterback with an actual arm and a backup quarterback who wasn’t like Black McGloin in terms of passing skill.

Point being that that offense was too much of a garbage fire for “a little luck” to get them to 9-2.

If Rob Bolden is the QB of that team
they go at least 7-4. no question

What?
I think this is like saying the French beat Germany in ‘40 if they had just had Chesty Puller and one battalion of his Marines. There’s too much bad for a little good to overcome.

If Pat Devlin transferred to the year 2004, we would have won the national title.

I still don't know that PSU beats that Wisconsin team
they were an absolute force, and I will never understand how they lost to such a mediocre Michigan State team. That stands alongside ’95 Michigan over Ohio State, ’98 Texas A&M over Kansas State, and ’07 Pitt over West Virginia as the biggest upsets I can think of.
I think 10-1 is very possible, especially seeing as how 2 pick 6’s are the only reason PSU lost to OSU in Columbus.

I think Cairo was being sarcastic...
also, are you talking about 2010 or 2004? 2010 MSU definitely benefitted from a super favorable schedule and their game against Iowa was laughable.

I’m not. Mills was that bad.
and 04 is what I was talking about

Thats just the nature of Sparty....
he’s good for a few wins you don’t see coming, and he’s also GREAT for at least one mind-blowing pucker job.

You are the only person I know who could look back at 2004 and think what you’re thinking. I look back at 2004 for a second, then I grab onto something sensitive to snap back to the present, to reality.

We lost that game in 2004
because Anthony Davis was a little %$@# who benched himself, and MSU held us on goal-line stands not once but TWICE because of it.
John Stocco had a very forgettable 2004 campaign. Without Davis, the Badgers weren’t able to do much of anything on offense.
How about 2009 Purdue over Ohio State while you’re looking at upsets?

The only reason that game isn't on the list with the others
is because before this year, Pryor was good for losing 1-2 games / year all by himself, regardless of the competition. He’ll win a couple all by himself too (2008 Wisconsin comes to mind), and he single handedly made OSU’s offense not atrociously bad for the entire first half of the past season, but that TP will inexplicably drop a game or two is a given.

Wisconsin doesn’t get enough flak for losing that 2008 game. I recall tons upon tons of defensive mistakes.

That entire season was a hopeless mess.
Somehow, our coaching staff concealed the news that our entire starting defensive line had been injured at some point in spring practices, and those same defensive linemen missed huge stretches.
They also minimized the danger our future AWFUL starting QB would be to our season (the man with the 2 completions on 10 attempts with an interception against Penn State)…

I don't recommend doing it
because it may induce a drinking problem and/or suicide, but if you were to go back and watch the 04 tapes, you would realize just how inexcusably bad Mills was that year before the MSU game. I’m not saying that he wouldn’t have been better with a better line or receivers, he certainly would have been, but his ineptitude alone cost PSU a few games

My memory of Bolden under pressure is an image of him dropping back awkwardly like he often does, getting sacked, and fumbling.
That would have happened probably forty, fifty times if he was the starter in 2004. Especially if we’re talking 12 year old Rob Bolden.

12 year old starting QB's are undefeated in Big 10 play.
We would have history on our side.

loved the kid but he needed a time machine to go back to ’02 and get his arm back.

I'm waaaaay more willing to blame the receiving corps than the offensive line.
Why bother doing anything but stacking eight in the box and running downhill toward everyone when receivers literally drop 7 or 8 passes per game and other times get no separation in man coverage.

acticle on Hali playing with injuries this season
How badly?
He pointed to his right shoulder, which he said had a tear in it. Then to his left shoulder, which he said had a partial tear in it, too. Then to a foot, which also had a torn muscle in it.
chiefsblog.kansascity.com link
imagine a healthy Hali next year.
I wouldn't even want to go to work and sit at a computer all day
with a tear in ANY muscle. Probably explains why I never really excelled at sports.

I've been complaining to a friend of mine about Hali's lack of recognition for weeks.
And now I feel validated. Congrats, Tamba!
