The Big 10 in The Super Bowl

Fifteen former Big 10 players are part of the active rosters for the Packers and Steelers combined (14% of the combined active rosters of the teams came from the Big 10).  Nine play for the Steelers and six play for the Packers.  For the Steelers, five play on offense, three play defense, and one plays special teams.  For the Packers, four play defense and two play offense.  For both teams, the average years pro for the B10 players is 6.3333 years.  Both teams have a Big 10 player who has been pro for thirteen years (for the Packers it's Charles Woodson of Michigan who is also the longest serving active Packer) (for the Steelers it's Flozell Adams, a Tackle out of Michigan State - the second longest serving active player on the team - the longest has 14 years as a pro).  The youngest Big 10 Player for the Steelers has been pro for two seasons (PSU's Jeremy Kapinos...Punter).  The Packers have two rookies from the Big 10...Andrew Quarless of PSU and Brian Bulaga of Iowa...I think you've heard their names before.  The Big 10 makes up 17% of the Steelers' Roster and 11% of the Packers' roster.

Packers:

Brian Bulaga (R) Iowa (T), Charles Woodson (13yr) Michigan (CB), AJ Hawk (5yr) Ohio St (LB), Ryan Pickett (5yr) Ohio St (DE), Matt Wilhelm (8yr) Ohio St (LB), Andrew Quarless (R) PSU (TE)

Steelers:

Rashard Mendenhall (3yr) Illinois (RB), Antwaan Randle El (9yr) Indiana (WR), Larry Foote (9yr) Michigan (LB), LaMarr Woodley (4yr) Michigan (LB), Flozell Adams (13yr) Michigan State (T), Matt Spaeth (4yr) Minnesota (TE), Trai Essex (6yr) Northwestern (G), Will Allen (7yr) Ohio State (S), Jeremy Kapinos (2yr) PSU (P)

For the Steelers. their players come from the following conferences (in order of representation): ACC = 10, BIG10 = 9, SEC = 7, MAC = 5, BIG12 = 4, CUSA = 4, MOUNTAIN WEST = 4, SUN BELT = 3, PAC10 = 2, BIG EAST = 2, BIG SKY = 1, CIAA = 1, and one lonely Gold Domer.

For the Packers, their players come from the following conferences (in order of representation): SEC = 11, MAC = 8, BIG10 = 6, WAC = 5, PAC10 = 4, BIG12 = 4, ACC = 3, CUSA = 3, BIG EAST = 2, BIG SKY = 1, GLIAC = 1, MEAC = 1, MOUNTAIN WEST = 1, PSAC = 1, SUN BELT = 1, SWAC = 1.  (Interesting...2 players from Div II colleges) (No Gold domers!)

Central MIchigan, LSU, Ohio State, and Tennessee each have 4 players in the active rosters.  Michigan has 3.  20 Schools have 2 players between the two rosters (Alabama, Texas, Cal, Miami (OH), FSU, Eastern Michigan, UCF, Bowling Green, etc.  47 schools are providing only 1 player between the two rosters (Notre Dame!)

So, PSU is in good company by only having two players in the game however it is important to note that the two teams are made up as much by players from lesser-known schools than the marquee schools.  So, when PSU is playing some of the cupcakes in the early season, remember that you just might be seeing some of those players from the other teams playing on future Sundays...with almost equal chance as the players from the big name schools.

Hope you find this interesting, I sure did.

I couldn't help but notice that God's Gift....

…had a critical miss late in the game yesterday on a very catchable ball.

Quarless..

Did not do a great job representin’ PSU yesterday (not that I’d do any better…I’m sure I’d cry like a little girl when a frozen football thrown at like a million miles an hour from only five yards away hit my numb hands). Still…

He's had a couple key first down catches and thrown some really important blocks

during this playoff season. Not bad at all for a rookie 5th rounder

Very catchable?

If you’re referring to the pass I think you’re thinking of (the pass over the middle towards the end of the game that went through his hands), that ball was thrown WAY too hard for that distance and a little high. Catchable, sure, but that was a very poorly thrown pass IMO, it would have taken an amazing catch for Quarless to come down with that.

by dawsonPSU10 on Jan 24, 2011 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Ok....you're right.

It was just plain old catchable. I don’t think it would’ve been an amazing catch. For me – yeah, but not for a guy who gets paid to do it.

Both teams have fewer Big 12 players than MAC players

With the departure of Nebraska, that league is Texas, Oklahoma, and who gives a crap

Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't Casey Hampton a player from SWC days?

Maybe

I’m not looking it up. It just blows my mind that after this and my old post on draft picks per team that people would believe that the Big 12 is anything more than Texas, Oklahoma, and 9 teams aspiring to MAC level talent

I've got the brains. You've got the looks. Let's make lots of money.

by ckmneon on Jan 24, 2011 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Which is exactly why

I think it’s nuts that people think Mike Leach could succeed in the ACC or Big Ten. He rode Michael Crabtree to one win over Texas, and the rest of the time got dominated by the two schools in that league with a pulse, and did pretty well but by no means perfect against the crap teams in that league. In terms of accomplishment vs. the quality of competition, Mike Leach makes Brady Hoke look like Bear Bryant.

Ouch.

I love it, though. Remember what happened at the end of his 11-1 season, too?

He basically lucked into a bowl win over Cal, which should NEVER have been in that game to being with (F*** 2004 Texas).

Mike Leach

I don’t get the fascination with Leach other. He had a gimmick offense in a league with poor defense. And while the James stuff was probably ESPNfided of proportion, I would want a coach with that attached to him recruiting for my school.

Looked it up....

Hampton played at Texas 1997-2000. SWC ended in 96, so he came in for the start of the Big XII.

Additionally....

Having watched the Shrine Bowl, I’m not thinking we’re gonna see Evan Royster playing in a Super Bowl any time soon (unless it’s in Euro-Football or the CFL). Despite a touchdown from 4 yards out, I think he somewhat underperformed…and apparently many scouts seem to think so too if you scan the headlines. Ogbu did okay. I don’t think anyone from PSU is on the Senior Bowl.

He's too slow.

Just like Hunt was. And neither was strong enough to be a tackle breaker at the pro level.

Very nice college backs, though. I really don’t care what PSU guys do at the next level. If they do well it’s just a bonus to me. I just want them to do well at the collegiate level and help PSU to win games.

by J Breezy on Jan 24, 2011 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

Right. I hate the tendency to judge the value of college players on their pro potential. Some guys have skills that translate better for the college game than the NFL. That doesn’t mean they weren’t good college players just because they go undrafted or bow out quickly from the NFL.

by Laaaaazzz on Jan 24, 2011 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

I barely follow college hoops.

And don’t follow the NBA at all. So I may be off base with this, but I’m pretty sure Duke doesn’t turn out many pro players, but their bb program sure wins a ton of games.

Anyway, let the Pitt fans brag about their great pro players. I prefer to see the guys that go to my school win at the college level.

by J Breezy on Jan 24, 2011 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

Duke has turned out an astonishing number of solid NBA'ers.

Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, Elton Brand (jury might be out now lol), Corey Maggette, Shane Battier…

Shane’s probably the best of the bunch IMO.

Laettner was solid? I really don't remember.

Maggette shouldn’t be mentioned just on principle: Shashevski and his peeps cheated so very hard. Hello, Myron Piggie.

Again...I'm not the most learned in this arena, but...

…that’s 5 guys and Duke’s been top notch for a over 30 years now. So looking at it from that angle it’s not all that impressive.

But I could be way off in all this. I am definitely out of my league with this topic.

by J Breezy on Jan 25, 2011 6:04 AM EST up reply actions

I only went with about a 5 year period

there are a LOT more NBA’ers that K’s put in the NBA.

Luol Deng. J.J. Redick, Dahntay Jones, Jay Williams, Mike Dunleavey Jr. (who was clearly NOT worth the selection used on him), Shelden Williams, yeah.

There have been a lot of first round selections out of Duke. Not all have put up the careers that Deng or Battier have, but they’ve still been selected in the first round.

I think...

It’s the tube top. I really thought they’d gone out in the 80’s. I can get over the fact that “she”? “it?” looks like a shaved sasquatch with a mullet and that the lack of pants seems to be enticing to the observing trailer-trash who, for the most part, seem more interested in looking at the cases of beer than the obscenity before them. But man, an orange tube top just seems like something that female inmates would have worn in an Alabama prison movie in the late 70’s/early 80’s.

The other thing I just noticed: that tank top is basically around her waist, which further accentuates the horror that the head on shot would be.
