My Grades for Penn State against Purdue

Even though I'm disappointed that my prediction came true, I still cant help but note that I saw this coming from a mile away. For starters, we always play flat after coming off of either a big win or a big loss. And let's not forget how Purdue has a knack for playing us close. Remember 2005? Sure, we blew them out 33-15 but it was 23-15 at one point and Purdue had the momentum after forcing a punt. And in 2006 we beat them by a baseball score, 12-0 to be exact, but we dominated the game from start to finish. Then in 2007 in a game with a boatload of field goals and special teams plays, we survived Purdue 26-19, at one point they even attempted an onside kick. And 2008, perfect example. We beat them by a semi-deominant 20-6 score, but their kicker missed two field goals and an extra point. We were lucky to not be stuck with an ugly six point win over the Boilermakers. And, unlike the 20-6 game that could have been 20-14, this one was actually close on the scoreboard at 23-18, but it was a mixxed extra point and missed field goal away from being one that would have gone into overtime. It's just a good thing that Purdue's even more experienced at shooting themselves in the foot than we are, so they could show us how it's done. They had almost as many yards as Alabama, but we held them to 18 points thanks to our secondary at least doing its job in this game. When is more than I could say for the rest of the defense

Week One's grades against Indiana State
Week Two's grades against Alabama
Week Three's grades against Temple
Week Four's grades against Eastern Michigan
Week Five's grades against Indiana
Week Six's grades against Iowa

Overall - C-: We're over the halfway mark in the season and although I've seen some improvements game to game, the biggest issues still seem to refuse to go away. Namely the lack of production in the red zone. However, I thought the offense played better against Purdue than they did against Indiana or Temple (although Temple may not be comparable to the others in this case). I saw a lot more of a balance at a lot of times than I did against even cupcakes Eastern Michigan and Indiana. Purdue was a huge underdog and came in and played their hearts out, but the biggest thing is Penn State played down to the competition just as much as Purdue played up to the competition. No matter how nice you want to be to this team after winning, sometimes a win is not a win, especially given how we've struggled the past two years on homecoming. We used to be pretty much invincible on homecoming. Remember 2007 when Penn State destroyed Wisconsin 38-7? Wisconsin finished the year with a better record than us. But it's been the story of this year, outside of Indiana State and Eastern Michigan, we've looked very very vulnerable at times. But despite the win being a "win", we're bowl eligible.

Offense - C: I actually thought we did alright on offense against the Boilermakers outside of that stupid red zone turnover (something that seems to be a Penn State specialty in 2011). Bolden looked great on our second drive but outside of that looked like his usual self. Matt McGloin had moments of looking great, while usually he looked downright average. It was nice to strike first against Purdue with a touchdown, usually our opening score is a field goal, that was even the case against the EMUs. Silas Redd continues to look great despite the offensive line looking shaky at times, racking up heaps and heaps of yards. Curtis Dukes is a great complement to Redd's shiftiness, so he should continue to be co-starter. There was also a Stephfon Green sighting. He went for two yards but it was nice to see him in the running game again. Green has big play speed, afterburners that even Silas Redd doesn't have. So if he can be worked in the way he was in 2008 and 2009, that'd help us out in the long run. I was also impressed with the play action passes. One thing I was NOT impressed with, however, was the reverse. Dear JoePa, stop running the reverse, please, I'm BEGGING YOU! NO! MORE! REVERSES!

Defense - D: As decent as I thought the offense did, the defense really left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Quite honestly, this looked like last year's defense. 344 yards from Purdue? A couple lucky bounces away from giving up 20 or 23 to them? Who are we, Rice? If we want to beat Nebraska, Ohio State, and Illinois, or even hang close with Wisconsin, our defense can't play like this again. Purdue ran the ball against us surprisingly well. Ralph Bolden had 97 yards, almost as much as Alabama's own Trent Richardson who had 111 and 12 more than Eddie Lacy. The defense came alive in the second half of the fourth quarter, shutting down a Purdue team that had spent the game moving the ball at will on Penn State. And we only forced one sack all game. Pathetic. However, I will say that Still, Hill, Stanley, and Crawford had their moments, but the only part of the defense that seemed to care was the secondary. Purdue's pass-happy game was "limited" to 182 total yards. In all, this is the worst I saw the defense play all year, and I'm absolutely including that Alabama game!

Special Teams - C+: It was hard to grade these guys but I settled on C+. This is not a "fair to middling" C+ where they played an overall okay game with a few bright spots, this is a C+ that's a mix of wonderful and dreadful. Quite simply, this is what you get when you average an F (coverage), A+ (return game), and B (kicking game). Had the kick coverage been better, this would have been much higher, and I'm not just talking about that annoying 78 yard return by Purdue, I'm also talking about how they'd often start around the 40 or so. However, something of note is that when Anthony Fera got a good punt off, it was a GOOD punt. Our special teams were the little girl with the curl, when they were good they were VERY GOOD, but when they were bad they were horrid. Pinning Purdue at the 1 may have been what really cinched the game for us, and let's not forget the other punts. Plus we saw Anthony Fera make some nice field goals despite the nasty win. And of course, Chaz Powell proving that he can return kickoffs against more than just I-AA teams. But let's not forget how good Fera was.

Gameball goes to - Anthony Fera: It was hard to pick between Nick Sukay, Nathan Stupar (apparently if your initials are NS, you shut down Purdue's north and south game), and our do it all on kicking man, Anthony Fera, but after the day he had, how could I not give it to him? Fera did not miss a single kick or shank a single punt, unlike Purdue's usually accurate Carson Wiggs, and accounted for 11 of our 23 points, which is almost half. If it weren't for our mango run drinking kicker, this game might have been a loss. The most important thing he did for us was when he could lengthening the field Purdue had to work with, really helping out our defense.

It was over when: Nick Sukay intercepted Caleb Terbush on 4th down to seal away the game as a win for Penn State, sealing Purdue's fate as the team that hung around all game long but couldn't take the lead at any point or even give themselves something to hold onto. Despite keeping it close, Purdue was actually one of a few teams that never led or tied us at any point in the game (not counting the 0-0 tie to start the game, of course). The closest they got was cutting the lead to 7-5 and to 13-12. In the fourth quarter, after their touchdown run, Purdue couldn't generate anything on offense, and Nick Sukay finished them off late in the 4th.

Next Opponent - Northwestern: I know we like to think of these guys as "just Northwestern" and they're looking pretty pitiful this year, along the same lines as Purdue and Indiana, although nowhere near as awful as Minnesota. They gave up 41 points to Iowa and just have not looked solid at any point this year. They even lost 21-14 to Army! Now, apparently that doesn't mean anything, because Purdue lost to Rice and Indiana to North Texas and they still gave us games. Unless they prove otherwise, I'm certain this will be another ugly win.

Green had a textbook cut block on 3rd down that we converted

I am happy he’s back, he’s the best blocker in the backfield.

Wasn't it Nate Stupar

Who intercepted the 4th down pass to seal away the game?

I like sports and I don't care who knows.

My grades

Defense-F
We should have held Purdue to -12 points.

Offense- F-
Automatic F- if you don’t score in 50’s.

Also, what’s up with Silas Redd??? He should have at least 2,500 yards this far into the season.

We couldn't even crack 50 against Indiana State or Eastern Michigan, so I don't expect to see 50 again until next year.

Last time we scored 50 was in 2009 against Eastern Illinois (52-3) and against an FBS team it was in 2008 against Syracuse (55-13).

Well played, then.

Had you said this in my Alabama review, it’d’ve been a little too obvious.

Sukay played a great game

but he got juked out of his shoes on one of Bolden’s long runs, causing a 7 yard gain to turn into 30.

He also went for a pick that resulted in one of Purdue's long pass plays

He could have came up and made the tackle immediately but he was waiting to try to pick it instead and ended up being out of position for the tackle.

We also saw this in the Alabama game

Sukay obviously plays centerfield with a “high risk/high reward” mindset. I love the ball hawking mentality of this year’s defense, especially in contrast to last season’s unit, but I would prefer to see him make the safer play a little more often. With the struggling offense, we need to severely limit opponent scoring opportunities, and I’m not sure the potential benefit of the turnover outweighs the cost in field position and chance to give up three points.

Sukay, however, is a RS senior, so I do not expect that he will change his game at this point. We just have to enjoy the big plays when they happen and hope more of those situations go our way than not. On a related note (as was mentioned in one of the game recaps here this week), Drew Astorino is playing healthy for the first time in almost two years and is having a terrific season.

Plays over 20 yds given up this year. Looks like very few big plays to me. 10 pass plays over 20, 4 run plays over 20.

ISU 29 yd pass
Ala 29 yd pass
         22 yd run
         24 yd pass
         30 yd run
Tem 33 yd pass
EMU 26 yd pass
Ind 24 yd pass
        24 yd pass
         24 yd pass
Iowa 25 yd pass (end of game)
Pur 50 yd pass
          39 yd run
          21 yd run
If you want to complain about my cutoff of over 20, there were 4 more plays of exactly 20 this season.
Total plays over 20 yards, 14. I don’t think anyone is taking too many risks in the secondary with only 10 passes over 20 yards, one a broken play against Temple, another broken play against Purdue and the very last play of the game against Iowa which was 4th and 39.

My grammer skills need improved.

I was just referring to Sukay in particular

When he becomes the primary defender on deep passing plays (so usually to the middle of the field), he has always shown a tendency to look for the pick, at the risk of letting up a big completion if he misjudges it, instead of timing a hit to jar the ball loose or at least contain the receiver. I still remember both Nick and Drew going for a pick in the Capital One Bowl and tipping the ball to a streaking LSU receiver who couldn’t get a handle on it, despite nothing but real estate in front of him (I was shocked when watching a replay of this game on TV to learn that play took only a few seconds, because I remember it lasting approximately 10 minutes, all in extreme slow motion).

Sukay is smart enough DB and good enough athlete that he’ll often make that play, but he can surrender a chunk of yardage when he doesn’t. Bradley has obviously given him the green light to go for the INT, and I’m fine with that. My personal preference is just for a more conservative style that tables an opportunity for a turnover to decrease the odds of giving up a huge chunk of yardage.

He hasn't done it at all this year

The only two pass plays that went over 30 yards were both broken plays where the QB rolled away from contain. Against Temple, the corner came up on the roll and left the receiver open, Sukay made the play to stop him and against Purdue the receiver’s lane just opened up, had nothing to do with Sukay. He did that a couple times early last season before his injury but after the Alabama game last year I can’t remember one time he took a risky attempt at an int. Now if you want to knock his tendency to try and rock the guy instead of wrapping, that I’ll agree with.

My grammer skills need improved.

Comparing to Alabama

on Purdue’s better runs through the line, while I watching the game, I thought the same thing – like they studied that particular game where Ala had success, knowing their run game was competent and wanting to take advantage of their strength.

Again, we lost points with a drop in the end zone; so that’s a drop off in the ‘mental game’ / personal confidence – where this team needs it most. We’ve had at least one of these in each game.

Thanks for keeping this series alive, Mr. ‘Toona
Can’t say definitively that we “left points on the field” after CP’s great run-back; but with the ball at/about the 2; at least my gut tells me a Zordich/Redd or DUKES! run could have brought us a TD within a play or two.

The D did stand well defending P’s 2-pt attempt. Analyzed: it was a play inside the 20, their receivers were covered while at the same time we had a good push at the line, good pursuit too. I think it was Hill pushing through and with #40 Carson? right there and Fortt making the tackle, with Astorino closing too. That’s good play – when it counted, when momentum was not in their favor.

Sukay’s ball hawking is a double-edged sword. I love his aggression here. As a coach, you have to somewhat address that one play where (looking back) going for the deflection or tackle “shouldawouldacoulda” been his better plan; but I also hate to sprinkle on that fire. He, Stupar, Astorino, Morris, D’anton, Amos and WILLIS! all seems to have a keen-sense of timing that is pretty hard to teach.

Outside of Stupar, remember – these LB’s are young; all of them have improved since game 1 this season, but with their age/game experience – there is still some wax and wane. They will improve.

I can't wait to see how good this team will be next year.

This team is a lot like what we all thought the 2004 team would be like coming into the season, in other words, the 2004 team’s luckier cousin. So I hope that translates to an unbeaten 2012 season. I said 9-3 preseason for this team and despite “experts” saying 6-6 to 8-4, it looks like my prediction has a better chance of panning out.

My biggest frustration was that at times, our defense looked like Rice’s. But still, it did the most important thing in a game a D could do, shut out Purdue in the final 10 minutes.

Random Fact

I noticed today that the Town & Gown Football Annual predicted a 24-19 score for this game. Probably a case of the proverbial broken clock/blind squirrel, but I’m sure whoever made that late Spring forecast got a small thrill out of coming so close.

I noticed the short kickoffs from Fera

Almost looked like they were trying a shorter kick with more hang time to avoid a big return? I guess the logic was sound, but the execution wasn’t because Purdue started most of their drives from the 40 anyways.
