F/+ rankings for last five years were published today by Bill

Penn State is the 11th best team since the start of the 2007 season, second best in the B1G behind OSU (and just slightly ahead of Wisky). Currently, they sit at 15th, though new rankings should come out tomorrow, where they’ll likely move up a couple slots.

Say what you will about how they look on the field; on paper (which is all the BCS computers can see), they look pretty solid. It’s about time for the “Just Win, Baby” memes to start rolling out.

Interesting trend, thanks for sharing

- wonder how that list adjusts with a coefficient for schedule strength factored in; with that coefficient bollestered-up by the opponents “end of season” ranking, not their ranking when they were played…

UNPOSSIBLE

Everything ever is awful with this program. Coaching, recruiting, play calling, players, mascots, cheerleaders, STEP, the Creamery.

Until we hire Urban Meyer or Rick Neuheisal or that dude that everyone loved at Rutgers after he had ONE good season, we’ll be a bottom feeder.

Of course we knew this

If this isn’t the reason for why PSU doesn’t do a better job of recruiting, then the program isn’t the sleeping giant I assume it is.

If you want a head coach who is actively involved in your recruting and coaching, you’re not going to pick PSU. That’s just as true last week and yesterday as it is today.

Well I want to see how much time other long-term HCs give every recruit

I mean you sign an average of 20 guys each year.
Assume you recruit them for 6 months
30 days a month
3 visits average (1 official, 2 unofficial)

I doubt most long time HC’s (Paterno, Beamer, Ferentz, Synder, et al.) are giving all that much more than Paterno is. You always here about the younger newer coaches because thats what they have to do to prove to the administration they were worth hiring.

I also wonder

how cognizant an 18yo kid can really be about how a comment like that will take on a life of its own in today’s environment. I realize he’s probably familiar with the recruiting process and circus surrounding it by now, but that hardly means this aside is a premeditated commentary on the state of the Penn State football program. Many professional athletes still don’t understand how to talk with the media or the consequences attached to it, so I don’t really expect that from high school seniors.

I was an IDIOT when I was 18, and I fancy myself to be a pretty smart person. Also, as far as I can tell, his comments are only drawing much of a reaction here. It’s not like this is going to be on Sportscenter.

On a side note about 18-year-olds and media savvy: I was always shocked by Lebron’s poise and comfort level with the international media attention he got as a kid. It’s like all the small mistakes and teachable moments he should have been having as a young man maturing into an NBA professional never happened and then all came pouring out at once as “The Decision.” Weird.

What's hyperbolic about "you don't really talk to Joe"?

I’m sure he didn’t really talk to Joe. He’s not exagerating; there’s nothing hyperbolic about the statement.

You think he actually was talking to Paterno on the phone on a weekly basis? That when he visited campus, Paterno walked around with him?

The kid just told the truth. If you didn’t realize this before, you have extremely overrated the vivaciousness of octagenarions.

"you dont really talk to Joe"?

It is hyperbolic. Either you talk to him or you don’t. When people say "I didn’t really talk to him/her, it means they did talk, but either they didn’t put anything into it or didn’t get anything out of it.

I do not believe that Joe was talking to him on a systemic basis (week, month, day, hour). But to say that you don’t really talk to Joe is like telling someone that a restaurant has the “best sushi” ever, its hyperbole. You don’t really know if it is the best, I mean I’m sure the Japanese would argue that they make it better in Japan than anyone else in the world.

The point is there is telling the truth of, you know what I didn’t talk to Joe as much as others. I didn’t talk to him compared to other coaches. But saying you don’t really talk to Joe isn’t a truism. Its purely the opinion the kid took away from it.

I don’t think Joe really talked to him or that he talked to Joe.

Again. He’s 18. Its a product of youth to say statements like that.

You make a good point.

Eighteen year-olds would be better served by just saying, “Penn State is a good school, but Wisconsin is a better fit for me.” If, for example, Pryor had said that instead of the “too country” remark there likely would have been less animosity toward the guy (at least initially).

I also agree that in most cases, we shouldn’t expect eighteen year-olds to choose their words that carefully. Lord knows how many regrettable things I said at that age — and no one was sticking a microphone in my face at the time.

I have a feeling

1. When a kid gives some spurious reason for dropping a school it really means the school was not really a serious pick in the first place. Sometimes kids give reasons and I think, “That was the easy way out.”

2. Don’t discount the parent’s role in the selection process. It may not be the kid making the choice and it may be more the parents craving the love from the coaching staff.

"Illegitimus non Carborundum!" (Don't let the bastards wear you down)

by RWReese on Oct 18, 2011 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I say thats a good strategy

Make sure the kid loves the Penn State program, not the head coach, as the head coach can and will change at some point down the road. You don’t want half the roster wanting to transfer out because Joe leaves and thats the only reason why they came to psu in the first place. Obviously it means we lose out on a guy like JJ, but do you want guys who are 100% behind the program, or guys who aren’t?

Also, I have a friend who is a teacher and has a kid in his class who is being looked at as a preferred walk on at PSU. The kid came back from this weekend and got to talk to both Joe and Bradley and had Sukay show him around. If Joe can make time to talk to a walk on, I bet he talked to Denman too.

Deliberately ran his team offsides on a kickoff twice

to exploit a new rule which required the clock to start earlier than when the ball is actually kicked. It bled time off of the clock before half time and prevented Penn State getting the ball back to try to make a drive before halftime. It was a real dick move, especially since he did it twice.

The reason, beyond the taking advantage of a stupid rule

is that it was also dangerous. His players got a ten yard head start running down the field and were able to cream the receivers as they caught the kicks. Injuries easily could have occurred. PSU could not move to block till the ball was kicked and the front line guys had to backpeddle to handle the onrush. It was a total dick move by Beliema. The rule was in place to try and speed up games and not to burn time off the clock at the close of a half. There was even a provision that the BiG refs of course didn’t use that called for an unsportsman like conduct penalty to be administered on the second straight infraction. Other than the hooker killer, everyone and their brother in college football basically called Beleima a dick.

Completely agree with Paterno on Northwestern

They’ll go through 5-10 minute stretches where they’ll play as good of football as anyone.

They usually follow it up with 10-15 minute stetches so bad that close games with Boston College and losses to Army are possible, but at times they look legitimately great.

I think this comes from aspects of jNW football

that have been consistent for the last several years:

1) Good Coaching/Scheming – That gets the most from the talent on the roster.

2) Lack of Depth – The talent on the roster is not enough to hang in for four quarters against superior competition.

I wouldn't overestimate the good coaching part if I were you.

Even Fitzgerald made some statement this week wondering about how much of NW’s inconsistencies during the games has to do with coaching. The problem of falling apart during games is a problem they’ve had for the last several years and it’s struck them in games against teams with lesser talent like Indiana.

Also, Fitzgerald’s often a raging cuss (He’s only now starting to draw sideline penalties this year). I’m just of the belief that calm coaching staffs are less prone to suffering emotionally unbalanced plays from their teams.

I agree with Buch in that

I think Fitzgerald does a good job developing talent…he almost has to since they can never really compete in the recruiting of 5- and 4- stars except for the odd ones here and there who are mutant brilliant mind/freak athletes. Northwestern definitely gets a lot out of what they get recruiting-wise. I think he’s a decent coach at game prep but he’s also benefited from a couple of those solid athletes they were able to get – Kafka, Persa, etc. But having a couple guys carrying the rest of the team can only get you so far.

Sometimes I wonder if Northwestern is really playing up to the level of the B1G or is it more over the past several years that the B1G is playing down to the level of Northwestern, if you follow my drift. Do they look better because the B1G for the most-part is “down”.

I read that wrong and the first sentence seemed to say

that during the 5-10 minutes of stretches during pre-game warm up they’d be a good football team. Made me laugh

Those D numbers are nasty.

Again, it’s on paper, but as I said on Twitter last night, their D rankings are something like Pass Efficiency (3rd), Pass D (6th), Total D (6th), and Run D (22nd)

No weakness

but this is the first PSU D I can remember that had no weakness. Interior line? Great. DEs? Very solid. Linebackers? OMG Awesome, even without the best LB in the country. Secondary? Best PSU has had in a while

I remember better D's

but they were in the Sandusky era. Jerry knew how to teach tackling and get them to actually do it the right way consistently.

One weakness:

The pass rush. It’s not been nearly the issue I was afraid it would be, but it’s still there.

Yeah, the fact that the DEs can't get to the QB is a problem

If we go back to blitzing Hodges on every down, and it’s effective, that would at least be something.

Which is why I'm stunned that

Steele selected Crawford as a mid-season all-American. No way, I say.

Crawford

He was just 2nd team All Big Ten, if I read Steele correctly. Even then, Crawford being there with no mention of Hill seems questionable, even from the usually redoubtable Steele.

gonna be

at my wife’s grandmother’s house outside indiana pa this weekend…game is on big ten network….she has xfinity (comcast)…

i know there used to be issues with comcast and big ten network, anyone know if that has been ironed out and is it on their lineup now? thanks

I have comcast in State College

and we get the BTN.

I like sports and I don't care who knows.

Ugh

In my area of MD the only way you get BTN is if you purchase their sports entertainment package. Really? I need to pay for a year of crap to see the 3 or 4 PSU games not aired on at least regional abc/espn coverage?

by irz813 on Oct 18, 2011 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Still better than ESPN regional

I had concerns about BTN coming out of the gate for that reason. However, paying for a sports tier is something like $5 a month for me. Maybe $10.

Back in the olden days, you might have to spend over $10 just to order a day on ESPN Regional/+ so this is a better value.

Yeah

But if you pay for it you get NFL redzone and the NHL network too. Both awesome additions to the B1G network

I get the sports package at the end of August and then drop it in January.

The drop costs $5, but losing the channel I don’t watch for 8 months saves over 60.

Said it was from the press conference and Joe said it. That true?

PennLive seems to agree

And they’ve got the actual quotes

He has a chance to maybe come back quicker than we were thinking he would. The kind of injury he had, they were talking three or four weeks. If we have him in three weeks, we have two weeks to go.

Transcript of Joe's words

Here.

On intimacy with Eddie Robinson:

Q. Joe, you’re one win from tying Eddie Robinson. Can you share your thoughts about him and what he meant to college football?
COACH PATERNO: I knew Eddie. I wasn’t intimate in the sense that we spent time together. He and I appeared before a Congressional delegation when they were in the process of trying to figure out what to do with television (college football package). I got to know Eddie a little bit. Then we talked a couple times. He was a delightful person. He obviously did a fantastic job at Grambling. When you think about when he started, he was 24 years old when he was a head coach. He was really a great guy. When there was no place for the black athlete, what he and Jake Gaither did with Grambling and Florida A&M was something special. I think Eddie was a great guy.

I also liked this one

About Derek Moye possibly being predisposed to an early return from an injury b/c of …. his conservative lifestyle?:

Q. Joe, do you have any update on Derek Moye? Is he progressing the way you hoped he would be? Do you expect to have him next week still?
COACH PATERNO: He was at the practice yesterday without football gear on. Derek, he’s anxious to get in. I don’t think we’re going to have him for another couple of weeks. But I’m reluctant to say how long because he’s one of those kids…he’s a big, lanky kid, has no extra weight. He’s got a very conservative life style. I think he’s got a chance to maybe come back quicker than we would think he would. But the kind of injury he had, they were talking three, four weeks. Now, if we get him in three weeks, we got two weeks to go.

What does "very conservative lifestyle" mean?

That he spends his free time studiously reading and rereading Russell Kirk and Richard Weaver?
