Big Ten Bloggers Pick'em & Thursday Night Football Open Thread: Week 11
Week 11 of '11 is here and let's just sit down and forget all the commotion this week and watch some actual football. What do ya say?!?! Oh, looky here, what do we have? A match-up of ranked teams between #10Virginia Tech and 21Georgia Tech. Some times the Thursday night Gods smile upon us and this week is just such an occasion. Just to add the cherry to the top of this delicious banana split, the game starts at a reasonable time: 8:00 PM. Also, for the NFL fans there's Oakland vs. San Diego tonight at 8:20 on the NFL network. OK, it's Oakland so no one really cares... even people in Oakland. Open thread and Pick'em results to follow...
Last Week's Results
| Last Week | Wins | Losses |
|---|---|---|
| BSD | 3 | 2 |
| Mike | 3 | 2 |
| Jeff | 3 | 2 |
| Tim | 4 | 1 |
| Galen | 4 | 1 |
| Peter | 3 | 2 |
| Kyle | 3 | 2 |
| Ben | 3 | 2 |
So everyone missed Northwestern beating Nebraska but didn't someone ask the question last week if the Cornhuskers were looking ahead to Penn State? Yeah that was me and yeah I was too much of a coward to pick them buuuttttt.. I was NOT too afraid to pick Iowa over Michigan. Tim was with me and we get rewarded which brings us to...
Standings
| Total | Wins | Losses | Win % | Total Games |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSD | 58 | 20 | 74 | 78 |
| Jeff | 60 | 18 | 77 | 78 |
| Galen | 50 | 15 | 77 | 65 |
| Kyle | 59 | 19 | 76 | 78 |

| Mike | 58 | 20 | 74 | 78 |
| Peter | 56 | 22 | 72 | 78 |
| Ben | 53 | 25 | 68 | 78 |
Oh... look here, Jeff's tenuous lead is now a tie. Of course my bragging means that I will lose all the games this week and look like the blowhard that I am. Really we're all so damn close that it will be a sprint to the finish.
This week's games
| Day | Date | Opponent | Location | TV | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sat | 11/12/2011 | Michigan State @ Iowa | Iowa City,Iowa | ESPN2 | 12:00 PM ET |

| Sat | 11/12/2011 | Wisconsin @ Minnesota | Minneapolis, Minn. | BTN | 3:30 PM ET |
I think Iowa blew their wad last week and there is NO way Penn State could have remained focus under the circumstances. The rest... shark chum.
The Picks
| Peter | Jeff | Mike | Kyle | Ben | Tim | Galen | BSD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iowa | Michigan State | Michigan State | Iowa | Michigan State | Michigan State | Michigan State | |
| Penn State | Penn State | Penn State | Penn State | Penn State | Nebraska | Penn State | |
| Ohio State | Ohio State | Ohio State | Ohio State | Ohio State | Ohio State | Ohio State | |
| Northwestern | Northwestern | Northwestern | Northwestern | Northwestern | Northwestern | Northwestern | |
| Michigan | Michigan | Illinois | Michigan | Michigan | Michigan | Michigan | |
| Wisconsin | Wisconsin | Wisconsin | Wisconsin | Wisconsin | Wisconsin | Wisconsin |
Ben spent the night getting pepper sprayed so we'll give him a pass and get to his picks later. The only disagreement among the pundits is Iowa who has gained some fans in the name of Kyle and Peter (I'm officially off the bandwagon) and of course, the rally in Happy Valley. I just don't think the team can maintain focus with all the turmoil this week. I hope I'm wrong but I'm not optimistic.
Join us here for the game tonight, we'll take all your comments, predictions and song lyrics.
Be sure to become a fan of BSD on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter!

Nebraska's comments
Hey, I’m curious how other’s feel about various Nebraska officials are saying about safety at Penn State? I’ve never gotten the impression that there would be any adding negativity towards them due to recent events and feel their concerns are a bit disingenuous.
Also, this seems a bit callous and petty:
"He added that the Huskers’ participation "in no way condones" the actions of the accused officials at Penn State in the Jerry Sandusky case.
Maybe it has something to do with Westboro Curch being there.
Those douchebags plus the atmosphere we know. will not mix

It’s…. bad that they can do what they do, but they are a religious group, and the state can’t interfere with the church. That’d be my explanantion

Projection...
a basic human defense mechanism.. Exhibition of anger and hostility towards an object, person, entity that isn’t responsible for the anger.
It is a reasonable concern considering current circumstance.
Goes without saying that there is a lot of venom, rage and hostility in the PSU fan base. Considering the venom that PSU fans have exhibited toward Nebraska in past games in Happy Valley all it may take for this to explode is Nebraska and their fans showing up.
Hope PSU fans can hold it together but wouldn’t be surprised if it gets really ugly.

I posted this in the fan shot about the site, but since no one reads those...
I created the site. I threw it together in a few minutes this afternoon. It is just a small political statement; if the goal is to clean house, then the entire house needs to be cleaned. I posted it once on the internet and then had to leave home for the evening. When I got back, the site already had several thousand hits. Hopefully the message continues to spread.

Wait for the unadulterated human stupidity to bleed off in a few months.
That’s my recommendation. It’s at a high right now, but it won’t last forever.
And no, this is not in regards to the staff. The staff is awesome. The stupidity is the non-Penn State fans who are bashing everything and anyone affiliated with the university over this. As soon as they realize they have far, far better things to do (you know, like return to actual, real life), this, too shall pass.
But in the meantime, it’s going to suck.

I was worried about that too.
He’s already so fragile. A mini stroke almost took out my grandfather last week and he’s three years younger. A broken heart at that age and all this stress? I’ve been throwing in some prayers for JoePa to pull through this physically in with my prayers for the victims every night.
Joe hired a criminal defense attorney
to defend himself against ‘civil suits’. Makes sense to me.
if right now you did nothing wrong but were picked up by the police and/or investigated by a Grand Jury
you’d sure as hell hire yourself a criminal defense attorney as well. You can’t go and start forming a verdict on someone just because they hire a lawyer.

We wouldn’t mind having a discussion, if thats what you were interested in. But anytime anyone tries to have, you know, a debate and someone refutes a point, you just yell ‘child rape’.
Its sad. Its sad because you hide behind child rape instead of debating points that challenge the narrative you’ve built in your head. And its tedious for us to continue with you. So do yourself a favor, and go gleefully play with yourself while you think about how right you are instead of trolling us.

So apparently cars.com has pulled their sponsorship of the games the next 2 weeks?
Anyone know what effect this has on if it is televised?
I think its more in regards to espn showing the game but espn wants to paint it as them pulling out of penn state. They said they won’t sponsor the next two games and they sponsor the noon time slot. Last I checked Penn State is at 3:30 next week.

At the moment I think it looks like JoePa was scapegoated. I’m waiting for more info before I turn my back on a guy I really have a lot of respect for. I think he should have been able to coach out the season but I understand why the board did what they did. Best of luck Sunday against Nebraska. I’ll be flipping between Iowa-MichSt and your game.

Another outsider dropping in to offer my support
I have no real ties to Penn State—I have a few friends who went there, I lived in Harrisburg for a year and something called “Sports Jam Network” used to talk about PSU on the radio. I wonder what they’re saying now.
This must be devastating for you guys. I can’t imagine how I’d feel if Villanova were to be dragged through something like this. I’d be out of my mind. Even this feel like a nightmare to me, and I’m just some joke who knows someone who went to PSU. It’s just an awful situation for everyone.
The lack of honest journalism has been appalling, but what bothers me most isn’t the media—it’s their audience. The media seem to be playing up to an angry mob that’s looking for something—anything—at which to direct its anger. I’m utterly appalled at some of the judgmental, based-on-literally-nothing soundbites that I keep reading in my facebook feed. And the American public, in general, just looks gullible to me. We know the media is biased, yet we lap up whatever narrative they tell us to believe. I mean, why??
Either way, I hope you guys pull through this. It seems like the students are genuinely conducting themselves well. The fact is that an angry group of students gathered at 10pm, and there were were only enough knuckleheads to flip one (1) van. That’s class, yo. Yet it was embarrassing to see ESPN try to turn this into the Vancouver Riots. Which I’m sure they ignored, by the way, because it was hockey.
We will wait and see about Joe Pa; I am hoping it turns out to be no more than a miscalculation on his part. More importantly, I hope and pray that the crimes committed were no worse than what has already been discovered (though I’m considerably less optimistic on that).
Keep raising money for the kids. Attend that Blue-Out in place of a White-Out. Keep putting on candlelight vigils. Study. Say a prayer for the victims. Support Posnanski. Donate to RAINN. Keep doing the things that make your University a good place. The horrible atrocities can never be undone, and will not be healed quickly. However, it’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.
\V/ for Villanova!
\V/ for Victory!
