UPDATE: #ProudPSUforRAINN is Going Strong
A phoenix is rising from the ashes.
Yesterday, we asked the Penn State family to join with us and a group of grassroots alumni in raising money for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) through the Proud to be a Penn Stater (#ProudPSUforRAINN) initiative. We asked you to remember the actual victims in these tragedies. We asked you to remember that Penn State is NOT a failed university administration, but the thousands of students, alumni, and faculty who have lived their lives by upholding the values of Success With Honor.
Yesterday, you answered our call by raising (as of press time) $60,810 $69,814.
#ProudPSUforRAINN was publicized only through this blog post, Twitter, and Facebook. We managed to raise so much money that the man who put this all together, Jerry Needel, made an appearance on New York's ABC affiliate yesterday afternoon.
Despite the early success, we're nowhere near our goal of $500,000. Keep sharing this with everyone you know on Facebook and Twitter. Keep telling your friends and making phone calls. Keep everything moving.
Thank you for your generosity. Thank you for you kindness. Thank you for showing the world who WE (still) ARE . . .

Browsed the list . . . my friends are slackers. I'll be kindly recommending they "buck up".
But I saw Royster’s name. I think he played lacrosse in HS. . .

Lacrosse?
Huh… hadn’t heard that. I bet he wasn’t good enough to get into one of the really good lacrosse programs like JHU.

I gave a earlier today
The total rises about 1k every 3 minutes. I think at that rate we might actually reach our goal by gametime…
I think we'd be closer to $4m at that rate . . .
But I was a Intl Pol major . . . so I could be wrong to. Isn’t there a physicist around here somewhere?
by Nittany SeaLion on Nov 11, 2011 10:53 AM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Okay, well, I stopped being lazy
and did the math (I’m a tax attorney so I suppose I SHOULD be able to figure this out…)
$1k every 3 minutes = $20,000 an hour. Assuming gametime is 24 hours away (which it is not) we will raise $480,000 by kickoff.
Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.
I’d expect that $1K every 3 minutes number to drop at least a bit. That’s a pretty extraordinary feat.
This is going to take a bit of time, so let’s not lose interest if we don’t hit that goal by gametime.

Considering where it started
It was around a third of that yesterday ($100/min or $1k/10 min), so while we certainly shouldn’t expect it to continue apace (especially with that whole sleep thing we all like to do), it’s definitely a good thing that it’s growing at this rate!!

That video pissed me off
He’s sitting there trying to put the focus on the victims, and as he was talking, they split the screen and put up the ‘riots’.
Thats real, responsible journalism. I’m glad they did everything to listen to his (our) message and focus on the victims instead of playing clips that pander to their narrative

That was ridiculous
Shots of JoePa and the “riots”. Questions about how the universtiy handled it. When he didn’t answer that and talked about RAINN, the anchor asked again.

Nearing $90,000 — maybe past it by the time I type this.
Saw the call above to keep this on top all day, but why not just pin it there until the goal’s met?

But I will not. I hope you understand. It basically stated that they do not stand alone and we have their back. And it also made me wanna take out a lot of anger on whatever opponent next faces me. (Nebraska was not mentioned in the letter)

the game is secondary, and I absolutely realize that
but I don’t know how this is isn’t the most emotionally charged game these players will every play

Hopefully they'll be playing full of anger and rage
and not sadness and remorse.
Because technically all of those are viable emotions in this context…
Anyone know some of the more famous PSU alumni?

Depressed
I’m going into the weekend pretty depressed. The whole situation has really shaken me. I feel bad for the victims, and could never imagine PSU being a negative image. I was just thinking about how I have PSU smagnets on my car….am I now at risk of vandalism? No one seems to understand what this is like for us Penn Staters. The press and the haters are just piling on. I don’t want to talk to most of my facebook “friends”, and the few exchanges I have had have gone badly. I know it will get better, but right now this sucks.
We are.... sad.
When I read your post...
…the only thing that came to mind was that Geico commercial in which the Drill Sergeant is a Therapist. “You know what makes me sad?….YOU DO!….”
We are still Penn State and in case you didn’t read this thread, this is how we silence the haters. This and things like tonight’s candle light vigil for the victims, and THON.
Be proud Pete, be proud.

First, I want to commend the BSD staff for promoting this cause and its readers for responding so well. These are the efforts that “grab” you due to the emotional hook they have. Even though I am not a PSU fan, frankly, I kicked in a small amount to this cause. Being a father to a son, these events do cause some introspection. I also kicked in a small amount to Stephanie (Chris’ wife) Spielman Cancer Research Fund. Being a cancer patien;, there is that ‘hook’.
Take some time, look around for a cuase that you feel strongly about, and help them out. Again, a ‘well done’ to BSD staff and its readers. Oh, and play well tomorrow.

I'm a Boilermaker alumna
and I donated too. I’ve been really feeling for PSU the past few days and am totally outraged at how this entire situation was handled. Outraged at how JoPa was ousted. Outraged that people actually charged with a crime are still affiliated with the university. Outraged at the media coverage since two of my friends who aren’t big college fans just told me, after catching a news piece here and there, that they thought JoPa molested the kids.
Good for you guys for coming together and raising so much money so fast for this cause. I think as disastrous as this is for Penn State, it is very much raising awareness of sexual assault and molestation and hopefully will motivate other witnesses in similar situations to come out as well as the victims themselves. I just read an article about how a lot of male on male assaults don’t get reported by witnesses or the victims because it’s considered taboo and hopefully everyone coming together and raising money for this cause says that it’s ok.
