The Joe Paterno response to the BOT that should have been
At the bare minimum, whether they had decided to fire him or not, the BOT OWED Joe a chance to tell his side of the story, what he knew and why he did what he did. If the BOT did what they should have did and let Joe speak......I like to picture a feisty exchange with Surma taking place sometime during that meeting that would have went something like the following:
Surma: Mr. Paterno.....that is not the information the Board wants to know......you are going down a tangent that I do not feel is relevant and you are out of order sir
Paterno (channeling his inner Al Pacino): Out of order — I'll show you out of order! You don't know what out of order is, Mr. Surma! I'd show you, but I'm too old, I'm too tired and I'm too f**kin' blind. If I were half the man I was five years ago, I'd take a flame-thrower to this place! Out of order? Who the hell you think you're talking to!? I've been around, you know?
Surma: (dumbfounded and says nothing): (crickets in background)
Personally I feel the BOT was scared Paterno would 1) say things that they didn't want to hear and 2) present a compelling lecture that made them feel like naughty school children 3) they are cowardly and afraid of him.........No other explanation for not letting the man explain himself or to fire him in person.

But instead of yelling "Say hello to my little friend"
He starts throwing perfectly thrown spiral footballs at them all. And then form tackels every one, while executing perfectly done spin moves to get around tables and chairs.

I think it was the right call
to do it over the phone. If the Board had gone to Joe’s house, or if Joe had come to the Trustees’ meeting, it would have been an ugly, ugly, scene with the students outside.
How do you know he wasn’t given a chance to explain himself over the phone? All we have are the Paterno claims, I haven’t heard anyone from the Board describe the call. Shouldn’t we wait for all the facts?
Not saying it wasnt the wrong call to do it over the phone
but, maybe we could have waited for the facts if the BoT had done so too?

NO!
You are substituting the easy thing for doing the right thing. As I have noted on other posts…..you don’t fire a long-time PSU janitor over the phone let alone Joe Paterno. The service and commitment of any 61 year employee mandates and in persona termination. Watching the press conference Surma noted that the Board reached a decision and than notified Paterno via telephone (only upon pressing of the press corps mind you). I would love it if more detailed was offered by the BOT offered little INCLUDING any reason for the termination. Not at all how you handle the termination and ensuing press conference regarding a legend like Joe Paterno. Check out D.C.‘s similar thoughts in his Clark’s Corner article.
May the JVP way......success with honor forever be the Penn State way.
I've heard that Joe Paterno
hand picked all but 4 of the current board members, which I doubt is true. Does anyone doubt that most of the board of trustees had some kind of knowledge of what was going on with Sandusky?
When you put those black shoes on tomorrow, and you put on that jersey without your name on the back, and you put that plain helmet on, that's tradition. Penn State tradition!
--Who else?
Considering the level of shared directors...
between the BOT, Second Mile, University administration, State College & Centre County government, and state government, at least a couple of them had to be fully aware of both the 1998 and 2002 charges.
If anybody is guilty of covering this up to protect their cash cow, it’s somebody who served on both the BOT and the Second Mile board.

We are being accused both here and in other places of being mindless
JoePa drones. I resent that, because it allows those critics to easily dismiss us. Most of us believe that Joe should have been suspended, with termination as an option IF the remaining facts warranted it.
Correct me if I am wrong, but most of us are upset with the BoT because
"Make haste to reassure us, I beg you, and tell us that our fellow citizens understand us, support us, and protect us as we ourselves are protecting the glory of the Empire.
"If it should be otherwise, if we should have to leave our bleached bones on these desert sands in vain, then beware the fury of the Legions."
Post fail.
Because:
(1) They did no further investigating, but relied on a one-sided grand jury report and what the “Kill Joe!” media dredged up between Saturday and Wednesday.
(2) As noted, they did not have the decency to provide Joe with an interview to provide his side of the story. What is he had walked in with 800 hand-written notes to Curley/Schultz/Spanier asking, “What are you guys doing about that Sandusky guy?”
(3) As also noted, they fired someone who had devoted his life and resources to Penn State by CALLING him. Don’t want to provoke the crowd by showing up in person? Go with a police escort — there sure were enough of them on College Ave.
(4) Joe was deemed a credible witness by the grand jury; the jokers who are charged with perjury are still on the State payroll AND their defense will be paid using University funds.
(5) We all, including the BoT, know that firing Joe does NOTHING to help the (alleged) victims — that he was scapegoated in attempt to appease the media. Irony of irony, a lawyer for some of the victims AND the Commonwealth AG are questioning Joe’s firing. More evidence that the Board acted out of fear, stupidity, and (possibly) complicity with Spanier/Curley/Schultz.
What have I missed?

See my comment above.
If anybody had real incentive and opportunity to cover up crimes to protect their cash cow, it’s somebody who served on the BOT and the board of Second Mile.
Dear God I hope if that’s true that money was their only motivation…
