We are the 99.9999%

WE ARE...The 99.9999% of Penn Staters not involved in the Sandusky affair.

We are the 99.9999%: We refuse to be defined by the acts of a sexual deviant, by those who failed to take action to prevent those acts, by the uninformed national media talking heads telling us who they assume we are, or by the serial Penn State haters who see this as a golden opportunity to pile on.

We are the 99.9999%: We're disgusted by everything we're reading and hearing. We demand justice, in whatever form justice may take. We want answers. What did everyone know, and when did they know it? Was Jerry Sandusky’s abrupt 1999 retirement directly tied to the 1998 case? What did Mike McQueary actually see and report in 2002? Did anyone try to find and interview the victim in that case? What was the motivation to protect Sandusky, who was at that point a former employee and by many accounts no longer close with Paterno? Why was Sandusky not made persona non grata on campus after the 2002 incident? Why would Second Mile, aware of the allegations, keep Sandusky on staff for nearly another decade and allow him unsupervised personal contact with children? Why was Sandusky still allowed on Penn State’s campus apparently as late as last week?

We are the 99.9999%: We feel horrible for the victims and will band together as a community and find ways to provide whatever assistance and comfort that we can. This is one of our core strengths -- if you've ever been to THON, you've seen us at our best.

We are the 99.9999%: We aren't going to Occupy Wall Street though. We are going to Occupy Beaver Stadium...and the Bryce Jordan Center...and Rec Hall...and anywhere else where we can support student athletes who weren't a part of this and didn't sign up for this. They deserve our support as well.

We are the 99.9999%: We are disappointed in the way Joe Paterno handled this situation (based on what we know thus far). We won't all agree on the timing or manner of his removal as head coach, though most of us agree that it eventually had to happen. Either way, we will surely remember Joe for his role in this scandal, but we won't lose sight of the thousands of lives he impacted in a positive way and the contributions he made over 60 years of service to our University and to college athletics as a whole.

We are the 99.9999%: We will continue to uphold the values of our University, even if our leadership has failed to. Penn State University is not defined by a few individuals, by a team, by an athletic department, by Joe Paterno. Penn State University is defined by the collective contributions of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community -- all sworn to uphold the promise stated in our alma mater: May No Act of Ours Bring Shame.

We are the 99.9999%, and we will show you what being a Penn Stater is really all about.

We are the 99.9999%...WE are Penn State
