Report: PSU Trustees Contacted Virginia's Mike London BEFORE Firing Paterno
From Steve Yanda, at the Washington Post's Cavaliers Journal:
Steve A. Garban, chairman of Penn State’s Board of Trustees, reached out to gauge Virginia Coach Mike London’s interest in succeeding Joe Paterno on Wednesday, before the board announced the firing of the Nittany Lions’ longtime coach, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation.
The person, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said London has no interest in leaving Virginia and declined the overture. In fact, the person said, London would prefer to sign an extension to remain with the Cavaliers beyond the terms of his current five-year contract, which expires Dec. 7, 2014.

Ehhh
Unless they’re already settling, this sounds like a pimp piece for London getting a better contract. Unless we’ve already approached 20+ other coaches (including multiple assistants), I doubt this.

Doesn't make sense to me.
But very little this week has made sense. What honorable coach would jump ship mid-season? And unless we were total jerks about it, we’d have to go through UVA’s AD, and what AD wouldn’t simply say, “Wait until the end of the season?” (assuming he granted permission at all).
BoT were total jerks to one gentleman...

He's a good young coach and has poached a few of our recruits.
Assuming the report is true (and I’ll put a “Report:” in the headline above), it’s distressing that the BOT would do this before resolving the Paterno situation, and that we’re starting the coaching search with Mike London.
However, as someone on Twitter noted, it would at least be a good sign that we’re not confining ourselves to the Golden / Schiano / Ferentz realm.

Kirk Ferenz is a candidate?
I’d be surprised if the Board pursued him; there was an issue with a sexual assault at Iowa a few years ago that Ferentz was allegedly involved in helping to cover up.
Ferentz is a name that has come up for the past decade whenever this has been discussed
with varying degrees of desire amongst the fanbase. And yeah, the sexual assault issue Iowa had a few years back would definitely sorta rule him out now.

Next coach
When replacing a legend (and yes he is still a legend) like Joe Paterno a lot of times you get your Zooker before you get your Urban Meyer. I would not be surprised if we end up with a meh coach for the next couple years. Personally I will find it really hard to watch PSU football next year if there is no Paterno tie (which is likely IMO). If it was up to me PSU stays grounded to its roots which is very much JVP. Though I was not for this while he was at Temple…….Al Golden has shown he has what it takes to deal with a very bad situation at U of M and get that program on the right track. The media and HS coaches alike are raving about him in S. Florida right now and Mark D coming in as D. Coordinator……will help him to ensure that PSU remains Linebacker U. I wouldn’t think twice about offering him the keys right now.

Never have loved Bradley
But I would be ok with him now given that I do believe the agenda of the BOT is to destroy all things Paterno. I could not endorse his candidacy if he kept McQ around though! SHOW HIS ASS THE F*ING DOOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May the JVP way......success with honor forever be the Penn State way.
It's being reported that Red may have whistleblower status
If that is true, they can’t fire him.
Saw this.....but it begs the question why is JVP not protected as well?
“Gerald J. Williams, a partner at a Philadelphia law firm, said Pennsylvania law is broad in protecting a person who reports wrongdoing, as long as that person is part of a governmental or quasi-governmental institution, such as Penn State. "
There is no debate that Joe Paterno reported wrongdoing and was part of Penn State.
May the JVP way......success with honor forever be the Penn State way.
I had the same question
I came up with 2 possible reasons.
1. Maybe he somehow isn’t considered a whistle-blower because he’s didn’t witness anything firsthand
2. He is protected, but the BOT knew that Joe wouldn’t ever sue the school. McQueary on the other hand, might.
Since the Washington Post is now publishing completely made up shit

My 2 Cents...
(1) against my better judgement, I’m going to go out on a small limb and conclude this story is BS. Not that the BOT isn’t capable of such irresponsible banter…but rather, who, with an ounce of PR acumen, would further enflame this situation by demonstrating our (institution) primary concern is seeking the HC replacement. Color me realistic…
(2) I cannot imagine us identifying a long term/outside the PSU family HC for the immediate future (1-3 yrs). It would not surprise me if we retained Scrap for the time being. One HUGE caveat – as long as the investigation does not implicate either he and/or other staff. Yes, the entire staff will probably be gone by season’s end…but…he may be the best option.
Am I crazy?

Priorities
(1) Stay away from NFL coaches – especially position coaches (see e.g. Tim Brewster).
(2) Stay away from anyone currently on the payroll (we don’t want further allegations to surface and replay this catastrophe in the future).
(3) Stay away from any Penn State coaches – let’s get something that actually resembles an offense.
(4) Get someone with head coaching experience somewhere else – and has won.
My lawyer friend here at Duke
just read me an e-mail from a lady who used to work for him here, but who is now at State (she is a State grad). E-mail read that the entire coaching staff is gone at the end of the season. WTH good does that do?!?!?!?!?!?!

Have to clean house
They all have to go! Having been part of Paterno’s staff for so long is a detriment here. The arrogant culture that allowed this coverup to happen must be swept from Haluba Hall to beaver Stadium. Why leave anyone who could even be questioned as to what they did or did not know? Makes no sense. We must rebuild from the ground up.
To be honest...
If Edsall were still at Connecticut and wasn’t busy torpedoing Maryland’s program, he’d be the guy the Board would want. Basically a military-type guy. No ties to anything at the university. He’d be their guy to bring in as the sacrificial lamb for two years. If he won, maybe he gets an extension. If he loses, the hire was “do no harm” and then they can start a real coaching search.

That's an Under Armor thing, not an Edsall thing.
As a Maryland fan, I am extremely disappointed with Edsall. He has needlessly antagonized players and some of the alumni season ticket holders are upset about how he gets in players’ faces during games and absolutely tears them a new one screaming.
I couldn’t care less about the wins or losses. He’s disgracing the university. He’s also throw some players under the bus in the media.
The guys I named above were coaches that I thought could bring some of the “military toughness” that Edsall brings and will have the character needed. They’re also not necessarily long-term solutions. Whoever the coach is next year is going to have a nightmare on his (or her) hands. I don't know if anyone else has posted this...
ESPN’s internal review has an article: “”http://espn.go.com/blog/poynterreview/post/_/id/168/espn-stumbles-with-penn-state-coverage" target="new">ESPN stumbles with Penn State coverage"
If you think that’s because ESPN is trying to atone for its spectacularly awful and inappropriate coverage, you’re wrong.
Meanwhile, the tone of the early ESPN coverage was spotty — sometimes getting it right, but more often seeming inappropriate. It wasn’t until mid-afternoon Tuesday that ESPN finally seemed consistently to ask the right questions and find the appropriate moral outrage. That’s 72 hours after the story first broke.
Outside the Lines" got it right on Tuesday afternoon, particularly with the participation of ESPN.com writer Howard Bryant, who had written a scathing column.
Neither seemed prepared. McKendry’s questions were indirect and non-specific. And Millen himself was understandably still working through the implications of charges. He started by defending Paterno’s job and cautioning folks to withhold judgment of the legendary coach. Pressed by McKendry, Millen meandered, eventually choking up and acknowledging that if the charges are true, this is a massive moral failure.
We don’t fault Millen — particularly not for a very human show of emotion. Rather, he was the wrong person to have on the set at the time. It wasn’t until “College GameDay” analyst Kirk Herbstreit joined “SportsCenter” in the afternoon that anyone on the air could fully articulate the appropriate hard-hitting questions and moral outrage.

I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight.
I just can’t possibly imagine what the scene is going to be tomorrow, or especially my feelings of seeing Penn State run onto the field with that little bastardized ESPN logo on the screen.

I think that theory is credible.
To them, I think the only bright spot in this whole horrible mess is that it gave them an excuse to get rid of Joe.
As for contacting London…well, “The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight” strikes again!
I have a feeling...
that whoever they hire, it will be done relatively quickly. But that’s just like my opinion man.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.

So Penn State's first choice for a replacement coach is a mediocre-to-bad ACC coach
And he DECLINED?
If the Sandusky thing is an 11 on the the shame scale, this has got to be at least a 6, even if it’s not true.
I had that in sarcasm font at first. But I’m not sure it’s necessary.

I'll bet
They will do everything in their power to 1. Find someone who never had anything to do with PSU football or Paternoster and 2. Is preferably a minority so they look as good as they possibly can in the public eye.

Hey, RW, Happy Vets Day to ya, man!
To think we gave up blood, sweat, and tears for this shit. Almost makes me wish I would’ve burned my brother’s draft card and my HS girlfriend’s bra. (I was too young for the draft, and getting her bra off would have been nice . . . . )

Never to late to call her up and ask if she's game.

She's a dear, but not that kind of game, Tez.
Besides, my bride of 32 years might look askance at me making that call.

32 Years?
Congratz man. I assumed you were younger due to the 84.. But I guess that could be your class year or something else.. I read too much into names anyway..

Yeah, Archer, I'm old -- 53.
84 is my class year at State — I attended after four years in the Army. I say 32 years, but that’s not official until next Thu — hope I survive until then. This crisis has rocked my world . . .

84, it has rocked everyone with an affiliation to PSU
whether a grad or a relative
i’m with you brother

Thanks, 08,
and I’m sure your close affiliation with Penn State football has made this even harder for you.

no one can deal with this properly
who could?
it’s been a mix of shock, depression and reflexive humor for me…and none of its working. i’d like to think the game tomorrow will help.
i gotta be honest, Obama’s comments were soothing. whether you like his game or not…it’s amazing what a polished speaker with the world’s best PR machine behind him can do for you

Well, I mean, you could ask your wife if it's okay to relive the past.
Please videotape and post for our entertainment; we need it.

She's the one who "suggested" I make amends by telling you guys
about my 32 years of wedded bliss. She is reading some of the BSD threads while I’m posting.
GREAT write-up about your Penn State experiences, Tez. I told the wife, “It seems that EVERY post I’ve read from fans of other teams has been supportive of us and Penn State.” I shed a few tears over what you wrote — not too proud to admit that. Thank you very much!!

A couple years ago...
I was at a wine tasting in with my family (right before my parents split). I was wearing a Penn State hat. As I’m walking through this incredibly crowded area, I hear someone shout, “We are!” and my dad and I turn and respond, “Penn State!” like it was planned. There was a Penn State alumni group there and they invited us to sit with them. We chatted for a bit and exchanged some emails.
The next year, they invited us to all go to the tasting with them. I politely explained that my parents had split and I no longer had a relationship with my dad, who was the Penn Stater among us. They answered that didn’t matter, I was still in the Penn State family.
You don’t get that every day.
The national media may think that the Penn State experience is a sham… that it’s mythology, or a guilding on top of this horrible core. Screw ‘em. Penn State’s family.

Clearly
1. Mike London sent out this rumor to make himself sound cool
2. If this is who our BOT is considering, we are royally fucked.
But clearly this is a hoax.
