Whoa
I did not see any of this transpire as I have been keeping somewhat away from the fray over the last week.
As a blogosphere character reference, I would say that all of them are staunch PSU fans who for the most part are moderate in their commenting and I have a hard time believing that they would be so over the top as to be banned.
In this time of tragedy at PSU when tempers, emotions, and perspectives are challenged, maybe a little restraint is in order as we let people play through their feelings. I’m going to try to take some time and sort through the threads to see where their alleged transgressions lie to form my own opinion as to the justness of their banishment.
I really hope though that a moderator was not self-serving in his action (a little like a Board of Trustees firing a Coach just because they COULD).

Additionally,
As so many in the nation seem bent against PSU, maybe we can ill afford to let any solid supporters feel left out in the cold. I think ALL PSU supporters need the support of ALL PSU supporters now.

Not really sure what happened either. Some the of threads were so long, I could not keep up or really care to follow.
I know there were some personal attacks/cursing but overall I think everyone was being a little oversensitive (both sides) and we should all move on.
This week was a worst case scenario for PSU and brought out the worst in many of us.
Who knows…what a crazy week.
May no act.................
One more thought
There seems to be a small subset of people still upset Mike H moved on to higher calling, I don’t think people realize/appreciate the amount of time and effort it takes to run BSD. All that work takes away serious time from God/Family/etc…you really can’t do both well.
I like when Mike chimes in here at BSD and he makes some excellent points but his passion seemed to move on to God/Family…and I respect that more than anyone knows.
Finally – I really like the “new BSD”, tons of info and a one stop shop for great PSU info. Mike/Fugi could not provide the same amount of info currently on this site, if they did they would have no life and dedicate all time here.
Just my thoughts…not that anyone asked.
May no act.................

Thanks, guys, for encouraging moderation and tolerance.
Just as with any other families, there will be spats and disagreements. I hope none of those lead to long-term estrangements . . .

Not to zoom in too much, but the "We Get Letters" fanpost on 10 Nov
is the one that seemed a bit much to me. Followed by that mod bropping the hammer on some folks who vociferously disagreed is what is causing me to address this situation.
"Make haste to reassure us, I beg you, and tell us that our fellow citizens understand us, support us, and protect us as we ourselves are protecting the glory of the Empire.
"If it should be otherwise, if we should have to leave our bleached bones on these desert sands in vain, then beware the fury of the Legions."
Personally, I thought the bans were absurd
The whole situation went down like this:
- Mod says Joe supporters are brainwashed
- Commenters take offense and call out mod
- Mod says that he will ban anyone who makes a personal attack
- Commenters proceed to make personal attacks and get banned
Seemed to me like someone got smug that people agreed with him, but then couldn’t handle the flak when people here got pissed about his attitude.
I would hope that these bans are uplifted, but at this point I’m not so sure that the banned parties would come back anyway after the whole ordeal.

I know that someone has to have ban powers, but it would be nice if there were some checks and balances with it.
I know that is probably expecting too much, as this is essentially a private blog, but the main reason people like me come here isn’t so much for the articles but instead as a place to converse with other Penn State (and college football in general) fans, i.e. the community aspect. Just because Chris happens to be the main manager of the blog, that allows him to wield the banhammer for better or worse.
I’m not really on one side or the other when it comes to the old Mike vs the new Chris (since again the articles aren’t the driving force behind my involvement with BSD), but one thing I did appreciate more with Mike is that while he did wield the banhammer, and sometimes acted a bit too swiftly (I recall calling him out a few times on that as well), usually his bans were reasonable, and had more to do with offensive posts or trolling and less to do with dissent amongst the members.
I have a feeling Chris won’t make these bans permanent, but I would implore more restraint in the future (especially in situations where either side could just as equally deserve banning, him included)

I will agree there
But if the same comments had been made, but directed at someone other than that mod, I don’t think they would have been banned. That’s what bothers me, and leads me to believe that he just couldn’t handle the criticism.
I just skimmed through that thread, and did not see any cursing.
I saw strong opinions voiced against one person, who has the power of the BanBomb.
I gotta take a break, guys; I fear I am going to get personal, and that is not constructive for our brothers and sisters now sitting in durance vile.

Looking at that list
Almost all of them are long time BSD’ers, back in the days of old Mike and before this place went corporate. Its really sad, give people a break. Its a blog of all fans, good and bad, trolls and moles. Either you let it all play or none play, and if what is said is true. I think I’m going to write SBNation and say hey, what the heck crap is going on at BSD. Why are long time community members being banned? What rule did they break? And if so, didn’t the Mod break it too?
This shit would never happen in the military.

Would I like to see the bans go away? Yes.
Will I lose any sleep over it? No…I am more concerned with family/job/etc
Not sure what SBN will do about it, cursing out fellow members is probably against the rules. Although I have no idea what the actual rules are on here.
Anyway – done with this topic and out of my hands…I just hope everyone appreciates the amount of work that goes into this site by ALL the staff…I doubt there is very little if any pay and you will never make everyone happy so you are open to criticism.

Long time reader, first time poster
I’ve been a reader for a year or two now and the content has always been excellent, whether under Mike’s ownership or Chris’.
With that said, reading the comments has always been an equally rewarding experience for me because it allows me to gauge what other people are thinking about topics concerning Penn State sports (and the Civil War, when Rambler is around).
Many of those on the list have been a part of BSD for a while, and I feel that they’re as valuable as part of this community as any of the mods.
In what has certainly been one of the toughest weeks Penn State has ever seen, and the toughest BSD has ever seen, emotions have run hot and tempers have flared. Normally, personal attacks and the like should be ban material, but I feel that some leniency should be in order based on the events of this week. It’s been a rough week for all of us, and as things move forward I really wouldn’t want to lose the voices and opinions of those members on the ban list.
Just my 2 cents.

I spend more time on this blog than my job most weeks. I rarely post but follow most threads. I like Chris and Kevin; I thought they were great additions the first time and was sorry to see them go. I loved Mike’s perspective but he had his flaws too, especially the religious stuff toward the end of his reign. Of course, it is extremely hard work to run this blog. I don’t think anyone questions that. While we all miss Mike’s perspective, the “I miss Mike” putdown is silly. This is simply a different site now, mostly in a good way. There is more of a news component and different editorial content. As currently comprised, BSD is the best and most prolific source of PSU info on the web. The opinions are diverse and I appreciate the debate here.
Having said that, I also did not appreciate the “brainwashed” comment from Chris. I just think that editorial control requires more restraint than that. Not saying the responses were always measured and rational and that commenters shouldn’t be held to some standard of conduct. But it should be a different standard. I hope the mods here see that. In any event, I didn’t see anything especially egregious in the comments and it looked like some were escalating it to prove a point.
I hope we all take a deep breath, step back from the ledge, welcome the banned back into the fold and focus on what is important here this week: “Ohio State sucks” jokes and trolling AOT.

Had a chance now to look at the postings.
Yes, just like North Korea and I am banning everyone that disagrees with me. Get a grip.
This is wrong. None of the moderators should tolerate being cursed at, but there should be no room for anyone intolerant of a dissenting opinion. I don’t think I want to be involved with any organization that allows its moderators to stomp on opinion so cavalierly. I served 22 years in the military to uphold a constitution that protects free speech and I’ll be damned if I’ll associate myself with any organization…even a blog…that will silence a voice with a contrary opinion simply because of that opinion (so long as the opinion is not expressed in a way that disparages another person).
Chris, you are wrong in this. I think I’ll ban myself for a while.

FWIW – I don’t see people with differing opinions being banned.
Its when personal attacks and blatant cursing at Mods/other members happens the ban is placed. Again…I think people are way to sensitive on all sides and make differing opinions a “personal attack”, I can care less if people agree/disagree at the end of day…we are all entitled to opinions

The posts that got Octashields and jtothep banned were not anywhere near banworthy in my opinion
http://www.blackshoediaries.com/2011/11/11/2553131/preview-nebraska-at-penn-state#82588507 is Octashields post, and jtot’s immediately follows.
That sequence is almost definitely Chris just having thin skin at the moment and blowing up.
I’m not exactly sure what Paige and the others did to get banned, since posts were happening so fast at the time, but I’m pretty sure Paige flat out said FU to Chris, and that some of the others were also getting pretty testy and disobedient with their comments. They probably earned a temporary ban just to cool down. I think Rambler received a similar temporary (36 hr) ban when this started, and I’m not positive but I think letsgopsu may also be a member of #teambanned

Most of them just stopped posting as it has/had been a long week(s).
I feel a warning or a temp ban would have been enough to get them to cool down. I would like to see them get unbanned as they are a big part of this board.
It appears that I have been reinstated
I still hold the opinion that I had held in the post that got me exiled. I do, however, apologize for the immature words I used to relay my opinion re: MY perception of Chris’s self-congratulatory actions and the attention he is receiving from bloggers on other sites and other people outside the PSU community.
I think that a lot of concerns that I had were more eloquently and less provocatively voiced in this post by Lions_84.
My criticisms were actually intended to be constructive, believe it or not. I was a little angry when I wrote them and let that influence what I wrote, so my sincere message might have been drowned out.
The fact is that I have very few problems with the quality of content being put out by Chris and others and my beef was, and remains, with the attitude. I perceive Chris’s attitude to be condescending and passive-aggressive, as I’ve said, and I think if he were a little more aware that his words and actions lately have raised this concern in a lot of his readers, he might be a little more considerate.
It’s really an attitude that exists a lot on the internet, and is probably something you don’t realize about yourself unless someone points out that they’re perceiving your actions in that way. I don’t think Chris has any malicious intent, but I’m obviously not alone in noticing and being peeved by this pattern of indirect condescension and it really wouldn’t hurt Chris to pause and think for a minute before he writes something like the “98% crazy” or “brainwashed” comments.

I was upset the night the JoePa bomb dropped, and it was the first time in almost a year I posted on BSD. I’m not sure exactly what I wrote that got me banned, but a quick email to Chris got me reinstated.
Nonetheless, I hope to see JtotheP and co. back soon. I always appreciate Jtothe’s perspective and ability to be a man at all times. Heck, I was proud of him the other night for actively stepping into personal arguments to ask both parties to stop the name calling. He’s one of the few on BSD I’ve met personally, and he’s one of the good guys.

That’s the part that is worrisome, HnB. If the standards are arbitrary or vague, discourse can be inhibited. Don’t think that is what the mods or the rest of us want . . .

Before I go
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here on Blackshoes Diaries, as I told Mike before he “retired” this was always a place of level headed analysis, thoughtful commentary and intelligent conversation. When the regime change occurred I was supportive and willing to see where things went. Unfortunately, this blog has reminded me why I didn’t read all those other Penn State blogs. Instead of carrying on what Mike started they brought this site down to their level.
If the Hipster Doofus that runs this site wishes he could hang with the cool kids he should have joined in with the clowns at BHGP. As for Kevin, he used to provide some insightful analysis on his previous term here. Now he’s seems content only to bring the snark. My favorite of course, is the semi-literate band dweeb that likes to remind us that he is a “Professional Journalist”, I’m sorry you haven’t fooled us.
As for Galen, AC and young Ben, keep up the good work and try to stay above the fray. You’re better than this.

myself and jtot got ours in the thread linked in JuggerNitt’s comment above. I came on today to see some pictures, video and quotes from the game (I was in the stadium, so it was hard to tell what happened during the prayer circle and didn’t see Bradley’s post-game) and saw I wasn’t banned anymore. Not sure about the status of the others.

surprisingly that didn't get quoted

I seriously disagree with the bannings, even if they're temporary
This is a tough time for all of us, and being able to participate in the BSD community has been a really helpful way to get through it. To deny people that opportunity, even for a short time, should not be done lightly. Several times this week, it felt like Chris was handing out bans pretty lightly; even if he only meant for the ban to be temporary, it’s still a shitty thing to do to someone who’s relying on this community to help them get through a tough time.
Some of Chris’s opinions on this matter have put him in the minority here. That’s fine; they’re rational opinions based on fact. A lot of readers found the tone of some of his posts to be condescending or dismissive; I tend to agree. This seems like a bad idea, but it’s still well within the realm of civil discourse. But anyone who takes this approach to an emotionally charged discussion should expect to take some flak in return. If the person taking this approach is a leader of the community, he should be prepared to take a lot of flak. Based on the way he was banning people in the threads, he wasn’t prepared for it. If he were banning people, even longtime posters, for spewing vitriol and profanity at him, that would be one thing. But it appears he banned anyone who expressed displeasure with him in a way he didn’t like. This is a terrible time to ban members of the community for getting a little emotional. For Chris to take a position and a tone that he knew would incite emotional responses, then to ban people for responding emotionally, was an abuse of his position in the community.
I hope that the managers and editors will review the bans, and where necessary, contact the banned posters personally encouraging them to return.

"This is a tough time for all of us"
I think that’s important for everyone to remember. I lurked around BSD for years before wading into the comment pool, so while I remember all the way back to the humble beginnings and often followed the comment threads, I realize I don’t have the same cache as some of the stalwarts. Take this for what it’s worth from a long-time fan.
I think the folks commenting in this thread, especially Lions_84, are making some good points and have their hearts in the right place. I also believe that the managers are doing a commendable job of providing good content and stewardship of a positive online community. I couldn’t hope to keep up with all the threads on the site over the last week, especially once they inevitably deteriorated into in-fighting. That means I missed the #banhammer drama, and I am piecing my understanding together from what I am reading here and from going back through the original threads. I do not know who exactly said what when. But I do have the sense that some good folks who make meaningful contributions here were victims of “excessive force.”
I say the descent into bickering and name-calling was inevitable because of the draining, exhausting, tumultuous days we all just experienced. A hundred Penn Staters probably had a hundred different reactions and opinions and all of them were driven at least partially by intense emotions. Mix those together with a dash of internet, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. People probably said things they didn’t mean, or at least said them in ways they typically would not. Likewise, the folks who are charged with keeping this site current and maintaining some semblance of order and decorum, all of whom were under the same stress with the added obligation of guiding the BSD ship through the choppy waters, probably reacted in ways that they normally might not.
I think it is great that BSD is a place where a conversation such as this can take place. Remember that the monolithic “suffer no rival” mentality is exactly what opened our dear alma mater up to the embarrassing perversion of justice. In that spirit, let’s resolve to move forward together – mods, please reinstate the banned, and users, let’s extend the mods some slack on this one.
A friend of mine who came back to Happy Valley this weekend put it very well, I thought; he said, “I needed my Penn State support group.” We are all going to need exactly that for some time to come, and for many, their support group is the cast of characters that populates this site. We could draw this out with apologies, explanations, and incriminations (and Hints and Allegations), or both “sides” can take a mulligan and acknowledge that now, more than ever, we are all on the same side, because WE ARE…

I sorta got the impression that Chris thinks he's moderating the Nintendo forums or something like that
You know, the kinda place where they see the mods as parental figures, and they think it’s cool when the mods make snarkily condescending remarks. And they look up to those mods as heroes even when it’s not warranted. And the average poster is about 12 years old. In those places, if you want to be a good mod, you moderate with a heavy hand but you mix up your thread lock/ban messages to make them “witty” and “pwning someone” as the kids say today. You don’t really need to explain your decision in details, just remind them of the rules. But there’s a reason for that. If you don’t moderate with a heavy hand and be a bit of a bully, the inmates run the asylum. The kids will be posting things they shouldn’t, filling up the whole forum with total wastes of bandwidth, and flaming each other like there’s no tomorrow.
I might be totally off-base, but I think Chris might be used to moderating forums with a much younger clientele. Maybe he has a history moderating forums with children and teens being 90% of the posters. And maybe he naturally goes into the “how to talk to a 12 year old mode”, not realizing that most of us are old enough to PARENT a 12 year old (I’d definitely fit in the “old enough to parent a 12 year old” age category), and some here have 12 year old grandkids. And some have 12 year old great-grandkids. Someone in that situation isn’t used to explaining themselves after banning someone and aren’t used to trusting that the posters won’t take it way too far. Moderating a forum of mostly 30 and 40 somethings is a little different.
This isn’t meant to attack nor defend Chris. Just merely an observation. And if I’m wrong, feel free to correct me on this observation.
I've ruled the Hello Kitty forums for years with an iron fist.

I'll say a few more things, and then you can take this thread wherever you please.
As mentioned above, we were all mad. I’ve taken this scandal especially hard. Penn State has been a huge part of my family throughout my entire life. We’ve built weekends, months, and years around it. We had the diplomas, class rings, and tickets stubs to prove it.
More than a handful of times since this thing broke, I’ve picked up my 9 month old and thought about what I’d do and how I’d feel if it was him in those showers Sandusky and nobody called the police. If you’re wondering why I’ve been especially critical of Paterno throughout this, there’s your reason. I have no earthly idea how anybody can think otherwise at this point, which is where “brainwashed” came from. Insulting the readers was never my intention. And then everybody lost their collective minds, myself included.
So if you’re still planning to give your “Goodbye Cruel World” speech in this thread and disappear, sorry to lose you. I hope that’s an over-emotional statement, like so many others have been since last weekend.
I appreciate the attempt to clear the air
I just think others feel the same way:
I’ve taken this scandal especially hard. Penn State has been a huge part of my family throughout my entire life. We’ve built weekends, months, and years around it. We had the diplomas, class rings, and tickets stubs to prove it.
There are a lot of people here that can say that sentence word-for-word, and for them it would also be completely true. I think maybe it’s just more of a general sense that the BSD community feels like using that statement in their defense doesn’t work, but because you have the ability to ban folks, it works for you.
I don’t want to speak for the masses…that’s just how the situation appears to me.

I think we've discovered the problem
I have no earthly idea how anybody can think otherwise at this point
First quote, by a guy who I think was Jackie O’s dad or something:
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. -Aristotle
Second, from an internet encyclopedia site which I understand to be an authoritative source:
Egocentrism is a personality trait which has the characteristic of regarding oneself and one’s own opinions or interests as most important or valid. It also generates the inability to fully understand or to cope with other people’s opinions and the fact that reality can be different from what they are ready to accept despite any change in their personal belief.
In psychology, Egocentrism is defined as:
- the incomplete differentiation of the self and the world, including other people,
- the tendency to perceive, understand and interpret the world in terms of the self, and
- being over preoccupied with ones own internal world. 1
Please don’t take this as an insult. If you do, don’t take it as unwarranted. Others genuinely hold an opinion different than yours. You are unable to comprehend how they hold that opinion, so you objectify and insult them instead of trying to understand. I know you didn’t intend to insult, but I have never read the word “brainwashed” in another light. Just sayin. Let’s take a moment of self-reflection (all of us) and we’ll move past this and try to be better people and better members of this community in the future
