Joe Paterno Has Lung Cancer
Joe Paterno has a "treatable" form of lung cancer, as announced by his son Scott in a statment to the Associated Press on Friday afternoon:
Scott Paterno said in a statement provided to The Associated Press by a family representative on Friday that the 84-year-old Joe Paterno is undergoing treatment and that "his doctors are optimistic he will make a full recovery."
"As everyone can appreciate, this is a deeply personal matter for my parents, and we simply ask that his privacy be respected as he proceeds with treatment," Scott Paterno said in a brief statement.
Words fail me at this point. Give it hell, Joe.

I think that question has been answered repeatedly the last two weeks.
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
Franco Harris:
"If I had to choose today between the moral integrity and character of Joe Paterno and the politicians and commentators criticizing him, I would pick Joe Paterno, hands down, no contest every time."
Maybe if we all stop asking if it can get worse, maybe it'll stop being bad.

I'm not sure anything can stop that. We had a nice ray of hope yesterday which was nice I guess.

No One Should Read The Comments On ESPN...Ever
I suspect most of the people who post there only do so because they’ve gotten kicked off of most of the blogs.
I made the mistake of reading the comments of a yahoo article.
Our society is f###ed if those are actual thoughts human beings have.
Joe, the reason we shout "WE ARE" and the reason the answer will always be "PENN STATE"
They really are depressing
I’ve always wondered why they bother trying to prevent spambots on the comments, the bots certainly don’t lower the level of the “conversation” that occurs

That ESPN doesn't moderate that shit pisses me of.
But pretty much everything does pisses me off and fills me with an unhealthy amount of rage, so that’s probably nothing special.
As for the people commenting, it’s similar to those that tried to tell everyone how they would react in McQueary’s shoes. They’re all internet cowboys. None of them are anything but sniveling little bitches tucked in their cubicle somewhere having reached the pinnacle of their pathetic lives.

I learned a long time ago
that reading the comments from ESPN, Yahoo, or any of those sites only raises my blood pressure and lowers my IQ. I don’t need either.
Which, sadly, isn’t to say that I never read them. I try not to, but every so often I forget and keep scrolling down. Then I remember.

The reason they don't monitor is legal.
If you monitor, you can be held liable for the things that slip through the cracks. If you don’t monitor, you can’t be liable.

Anonymous comments remove all pretense
Such hate is spewed on the internet because it’s their only outlet to feel empowered by being subversive. Do they really feel strong enough to have an opinion about Joe Paterno getting cancer? I would say if they really cared about this fiasco they’d learn the facts, but their comments show everybody that having a command of the facts is not integral to their opinions. They’re pitiable, childish cowards. If they’re willing to tell Joe the same thing to his face, then I would change my psychobabble-drenched opinion of them. (At that point, I’d call them evil, soul-less losers — big difference.)

For some context....
This noble poem, which is said to have induced Sir Robert Peel to give Tennyson his pension, was written soon after Arthur Hallam’s death, presumably therefore in 1833. “It gave my feeling,” Tennyson said to his son, “about the need of going forward and braving the struggle of life perhaps more simply than anything in ‘In Memoriam’.”

My world was already turned upside down
and now this.
Joe is and always will be one of my heroes. It feels the same to me as if it were a close family member getting this news.
Get well soon Joe.
Don't like the sound of that at all.
I lost both of my parents to cancer so it’s nearly impossible for me to be optimistic. Hopefully he can fight through this without too much pain.
Joe Paterno Apologist
Praying for you, Joe!
You can beat this! Much love, thoughts, and prayers to you and your family.
Media, BOT, etc.
They need to admit their mistake (they even said they don’t have all the facts while talking out of one side and bashing Joe on the other), reinstate the man, stop the fricking trash talk, and then leave him alone to heal. I believe that the AG’s office has testimony from Joe about how he may have followed up. This testimony will probably be used in their perjury cases. This is just my opinion but thought about it today, and it makes sense. The asswipes rushed to judgment in an attempt to destroy Joe. They needed to stop before today, but now more than ever, they just need to stop already. Then they need to leave him the eff alone, because they didn’t care then so they lost their chance now.

Sorry for your loss.
I don’t think anybody has gone untouched by cancer in some way. Shitty disease(s). I blame microwaves and cell phones (although I use a cell phone).

heart you Mandy.
It has to be tough to hear this news. Cheer on our boys in the ‘bus this weekend – they’re going to need every ounce of our energy and good wishes this week.
Why Cancer Why?
There are so many more deserving. I’m looking at you and you and maybe you (don’t worry it’s none of you good people).

lost respect
for Boeheim tonight. Why would you throw Joe Pa under the bus to make yourself look better (or to deflect)? Completely unnecessary and smacks of a scared man….with apparently less self confidence and resolve than the man who’s stayed patiently quiet while his character has been assailed. I used to really like him and his basketball teams. now, i’m not so sure.
The old man took a shot at him back when we joined the league.
What a petty crack.
...may we compete with fierce intensity, with the gifts that we have been given...
good god .. when will you cult members wise the hell up?

This is absolutely horrible.
Maybe this is why Joe isn’t responding to the allegations right now, because, in the overall scheme of things, last week wasn’t that important.
However, I think as PSU fans and alums, we have a solemn duty to defend Joe’s honor and reputation. If, unfortunately, Joe was complicit or had knowledge of what was going on and did nothing, then so be it. Let the chips fall where they may. But I don’t think Joe was complicit. I’m reminded of how Joe stood by Rashard Casey in 1999 when Casey was accused of beating the piss out of an off duty Hoboken police officer. Joe said he didn’t believe that a good honest kid becomes a violent thug overnight. Remember the uproar when Joe let Casey play? And what happened? Casey was innocent, and got rich after he sued the Hoboken police department. I’m thinking of that now. I can’t imagine that a person who stood for right his whole life, who sacrificed wins by sitting players who wouldn’t go to class or accepted gifts from boosters, would sit by and do nothing about kids being sexually assaulted.
I only hope when all is said and done Joe’s reputation is restored. Then again, does it really matter? There will always be the uneducated, ignorant masses who believe what they want to believe, regardless of facts. Those of us in the Penn State family will always know who Joe Paterno was. And what he was. And it’s an undeniable, indisputable fact that he is the single most influential person in the history of The Pennsylvania State University.
