Black Shoe Diaries Podcast: Lost Letterman And Beyond

For this episode, Jeff and I talk to Jim Weber from LostLettermen.com, who updates us on what many of our former favorite Penn Staters are doing these days.  Afterward, Jeff and I discuss the Illinois game, Joe Paterno's future, and the tough road still ahead of our Nittany Lions.

really?

under Urban Meyer, Florida had the highest team GPA out of any SEC school

rumor has it he “retired” from Florida because he got fed up with the SEC and the way that whole conference operates

you don’t want to run the spread offense? what about 2008, when we went 11-2, and won the Big 10? what do you think that offense was?

I for one believe that Meyer would do very well at Penn State

It's all simple math, really.

Urban Meyer won two national championships in ten years as a head coach. Joe Paterno has two in 45 years. That means Urban Meyer is a 4.5x better coach than Joe Paterno. I don’t know why Mr. nxk146 refuses to see this.

Urban Meyer is NOT a good character guy!!!! I want a PSU GUY for the HC job, which is not even going to be open next year!! JOEPA will be back, because he knows what kind of talent he has coming back next year!!!!

And, Chris Grovich, go take your “inside knowledge” and shove it!!!! You know nothing about the workings of the football team and whether JOEPA is going to retire!!!!

In defense of PJ's potential

it will be difficult to be worse than our current options.

This is undoubtedly true

I just find it very curious that people have bought in so fully on PJ, despite the fact that he hasn’t played a snap on the college level.

We see the shell of a former highly touted recruit and a former walkon trying to make the best of his abilities and just think “Gosh, PJ must be better than this right now”

Huskers Not So Bad w/r/t Turnovers

Nebraska TO differential in Non-Con: EVEN (6 lost, 6 gained in 4 total games)
Nebraska TO differential in B1G: EVEN (5 lost, 5 gained in 4 total games)

Most turnovers in a game was 3 against Wisky.

Certainly doesn’t account for fumbles NOT lost. Just based on these numbers, they seem pretty stingy with the ball, not so much loose.

by ckmneon on Nov 2, 2011 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

But Upon Further Inspection...

Looked into each game’s box score and found a much different story.

13 Fumbles, 4 Lost in Non-Con
9 Fumbles, 0 (!) Lost in B1G

Total of 22 fumbles, only 4 lost…less than 20%. That’s some fumble luck. By comparison, Neb opponents have fumbled 12 times, losing 5 of them. Much closer to what you’d expect (close to 50%).

In conclusion, they are loose with the ball, but have gotten quite lucky in the small sample.
