Five Keys to Victory - Penn State/Nebraska

The first weekend of November, 1997, was trumpeted by ESPN as ‘Judgment Day.’ It was the first time College GameDay ever came to Happy Valley. #5 Michigan at #3 Penn State. The Lions were weighed in the balance and found wanting. Penn State’s weaknesses in every phase of the game – offense, defense, special teams, and coaching – were laid bare for the nation to see. Michigan dominated every phase of the game. The highly-touted 1997 team never really recovered from that cloudy, cold, depressing day.

On the second weekend in November 2011, Penn State will host Nebraska. This will be another ‘Judgment Day’ for the Lions. They sit at 5-0 in the Leader’s Division of the Big Ten. People are at least considering trips to Indianapolis and Pasadena, something unthinkable in late September. Questions about the quality of their wins persist. Their offense has played, well, offensively at times. But I submit for your judgment five keys to a Penn State victory over Nebraska next week.

Star-divide

1.       We have two weeks to prepare and we must use them wisely.  The game will be won or lost just as much in the coaches’ booth as on the field. Will Penn State install any new wrinkles in their offense for the game? Or will they show Nebraska’s defense the same offense that was just barely good enough to beat our first five Big Ten opponents? Will the coaches use Rob Bolden in a way that plays to his strengths and complements the game plan, or will they simply stick him in there and say, “Go get ‘em, kid!” The best thing that could happen for Rob Bolden and Penn State on November 12 is a limited package which allows for a couple important conversions or big gains and gets the crowd, the media, and the football alumni off his back. And speaking of that, I wonder what JoePa thinks of his former players using Twitter to openly critique his choice of quarterback?

2.       Northwestern is our friend.  The most important game this coming Saturday is not LSU at Alabama, but Northwestern at Nebraska. This is Northwestern’s bowl game. We know that they can score points, and that their defense cannot stop anyone. So what should we hope for? Not a Northwestern win. First of all, it’s an incredibly remote possibility. Secondly, tired and concerned Nebraska is better than angry Nebraska. We should hope for a game in which Dan Persa and company exposes any weaknesses that may be left in the improving Blackshirt defense (and which our hopefully eagle-eyed coaches can exploit in the following week’s game plan). We should also hope that Northwestern remains in the game for at least two-and-a-half quarters, forcing Nebraska's starters to go deep into the game. Something, anything, that plants the seed of doubt in a Nebraska team that really is expected to go in and annihilate the Wildcats as a scrimmage before the real game at Happy Valley. Northwestern planted the seed of doubt in PSU's 1997 team. Now we need Northwestern to do us a favor.

3.       The hype must become focus.  At that forgettable Michigan game in 1997, senior linebacker Andre Collins committed a needless personal foul on a third down play which kept Michigan’s initial drive alive and led to a field goal. At the 2009 Rose Bowl, Aaron Maybin sacked Mark Sanchez, caused a fumble, and recovered it. However, he jumped offside to do it, and the Trojans scored on that possession for a ten-point lead. Would the outcomes of those games have changed if those plays had happened differently? Perhaps not. But Penn State needs to come out of the tunnel at Beaver Stadium, not with hype, but with focus. It starts with Matt McGloin going through progressions, continues with dangerous punt-returner Chaz Powell’s ball-protection, and ends with the aggressive defense’s controlled ferocity.

4.       Nebraska is not Alabama. Bo Pelini is not Nick Saban.  In September, Nick Saban’s Alabama came into a raucous Beaver Stadium and methodically shut down the Nittany Lions. They did not panic when the Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead, or when the defense shut down the Tide’s first two drives. Alabama knows how to play in a hostile environment. This Nebraska team may not. Witness their meltdown against Wisconsin earlier this year, which at this point in the season seems even more remarkable. Will Beaver Stadium intimidate Nebraska and Bo Pelini in the same way that Camp Randall affected them? We can only hope so.

5.       Penn State knows how to come from behind and win. Before the season, most people thought that the November schedule, with home Nebraska, away Ohio State, and away Wisconsin, would work against Penn State. That still may turn out to be true. But there is a different take on it now. Now, we have a team that knows how to win: the only unbeaten team in Big Ten play. Moreover, four of those Big Ten wins were come-from-behind wins, three on the road, two of those games decided in the final minutes. Whoever has watched college football enough knows that it is usually the team that believes it will win that will win. We’ve watched Penn State win games it otherwise would have lost because our players believed they were winners and the others believed they were losers. So is that belief rooted deeply enough in these Nittany Lions? In a close game, will they rise yet again to the occasion? Before the 1982 game, senior co-captain Ken Kelley said to a pep rally, “It’s not that we might beat Nebraska; we’re gonna beat Nebraska.” Does the 2011 team feel the same way?

Do the coaches coach? Does Northwestern play its part? Are the players overhyped or focused? Does Nebraska double-clutch just a little bit? Do we believe? If these five keys happen, then Senior Day 2011 will truly be something special and maybe even a springboard to the conclusion of a story too unbelievable even to fathom just one month ago.

Uh....

Will the coaches use Rob Bolden in a way that plays to his strengths

What exactly are those strengths again? I don’t mean to be snide, but really he has regressed whether due to his own shortcomings or through the coaches messing with his mechanics in his passing ability. He does not feel pressure. He doesn’t run particularly well. He is slow through his progressions. The best use of Rob (IMHO) is to let him observe and try to learn by watching as they try to improve his game in practice.

he has strengths, such as strong arm and athleticism

however, his psyche is totally shot, which renders his ability to use those strengths impossible

Concur

about the strength of his arm, but it looks as I watch him pass lately like they are trying to get him to have a shorter throwing motion and it’s screwing his accuracy. That’s why his throws (IMO) are either in the grass 5 yards short or over the WR’s head and either out of bounds (thankfully) or almost a pick.

And yes, I think his head is totally befarkled. He shouldn’t see significant playing time unless we’re clearly ahead and it’s one step removed from garbage time and he can feel that it is quality time for his development.

"he has strengths, such as strong arm and athleticism"

At this point his strong arm is a weakness, especially when throwing a screen pass and I’ve yet to see this athleticism that everybody’s been talking about as well.

Run.

Dear Bob,

Start watching this video at the 12:45 mark. It’s the TD drive against Alabama, which wasn’t beautiful, but did include Bolden tucking the ball and running effectively twice and converting a 2 point conversion with his legs.

That is the athleticism that everybody’s been talking about. Unfortunately it has appeared all too seldom, but it does, in fact, exist.

Case in point

of Bolden not thinking and just doing. He doesn’t trust himself to do anything right at this point, for whatever reason(s).

And step child to the Red Herring Pass

Red Herring Pass: Forward throwing motion before being hit by blitzing lineman, then losing ball before officials call it incomplete, leaving opponent to wonder whether it really was a fumble.

But it never really was.

+1

I seriously LOVE that play. The best is when the TV camera actually follows the expected trajectory of the pass then pans back quickly as the cameraman curses at being bamboozled.

I think they put him in so they can disect all of the defense's blitz packages.

They then can set up blocking schemes and put them in place for when McGloin comes back in.

And Urban Meyer

and Jim Tressel. And the dickwad at MSU (Mark D.).

Sorry, I forgot, can’t reference games from last year or earlier this year. How about Ron Zook? Pretty sure won’t have any nightmares about McGloin’s performance.

I enjoy a good boogey man as much as the next guy, but I would really like to stop pretending that McGloin is good. He’s a fraction better than Bolden (who has been terrible), so he’s slightly better than terrible. Whoooo!

He runs better than the the credit you give him.

He did not last year, but lost in the synapse-lapse he has had in throwing the football is that he has vastly improved as a runner. He learned how to run inside his blocks and not hesitate. When he has seen some daylight and gone for it he has been pretty damn effective this year. It might actually snap him out of the funk to get him in there and attack the gaps left by the blitzers with his feet.

I should add that I don't thing he needs to see the field barring injury.

But this comment is related to Joe’s statement that he will play. If he has to play, he should get his own package and mix things up.

I think you could have added one key to a win

Let our defense play. Meaning, call blitzes, press the corners and Lb’s. Let Scraps have some fun with formations so that Nebraska doesn’t know what our defense will be doing against them. Clearly Martinez can run and he does it often, so if our defense simply plays zone, he will be able to run through that, like Persa did and Sheelhaase did for a bit. Once we started giing different looks it confused them and made some big stops, and takeaways.

you don't blitz Nebraska, heavily. You work contain and keep the scramble lanes bottled up.

The key isn’t to force Martinez to run but to force him to throw. He is more dangerous on the scramble and pass than when he is stuck in the pocket.

I want to see

Hodges spy Maritinez. He hits hard…and is very fast to get to the ball.

Generally, I agree. A few responses:

1. I’m not sure Bolden has “strengths” anymore. He really just needs to take the bench, watch, and learn. Not play. Certainly not when we can’t afford to lose plays.

2. Generally, I agree. I think this will be a “first team to 45 wins” type game.

3. Hate references to Maybin. USC was going offsides almost every defensive snap. Maybin lined up about 2 inches over the line, and just got off fast. Bullshit. But it is what it is, and we got beat after dropping however many points on the “best defense evar!”

4. Agree. I think they need to prepare for an assbeating. They haven’t played a defense like ours in… ever? Big XII and all last year, and Wisconsin or MSU are the “best” defenses they’ve played thus far. Environment (and opposing defense) could make this game… uncomfortable for Nebraska.

5. They have to have confidence in winning… especially if they can hold the other team to under 10.

"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

Maybin got off on the ball perfectly, he was very explosive.

But he lined up a solid foot offsides.

I also disagree that this is comparable to a game against a team that was eventually split the national champ.

Michigan was pretty good that year and didn’t have near the flaws that Nebraska has shown coming in. It is a big stage for PSU but I don’t think anyone thought PSU would be playing for a MNC this season, though, preseason, Nebraska had some pretty big hype. I would say Nebraska has to worry more about the player hype than PSU.
