Penn State now has alternate jerseys
That's right, at Hoops Madness tonight, the Men's basketball team introduced new, alternate jerseys that are grey (or gray if you prefer that spelling).

I know this is going to create a lot of "I like them" or "I hate them" comments, but you all wanted change in the program and uniforms are a part of that these days. Hope you all remember that when we get a new football coach.

the football uniforms will not change
consider that the only changes made to the PSU football unis in the last 60+ years have been the removal of the numbers from the helmets, and the addition and subsequent subtraction of the blue/white trim from the jerseys.
Defense wins championships
actually the addition and subtraction of the numbers on the helmuts.
that was a couple year thing and didn’t stick.
My grammer skills need improved.
I know I’ve seen pictures where they used to have a blue stripe down the pant seam back around the same era they had the numbers on the helmets.

There were a couple of teams that also wore striped socks.
The fact is that until the early 1970’s Penn State’s uniforms were pretty inconsistent. I think the numbers didn’t go away until 1973. What is generally considered Penn State’s “iconic” uniform really isn’t all that old.
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.
What they need to work on
Notice how the white of the helmets is slightly off from the white of the jerseys. The socks are slightly off too. The pants are even slightly off from the jerseys.
We have the technology, gentlemen. Let’s tighten that up.
Sometimes a little inconsistency is cool
Look at what Notre Dame did with their helmets and pants this year, they intentionally made the gold on the helmet bolder, and muted it on their pants. It’s totally retro, and totally bad ass.
Also check out the Cowboys, they wear different pants at home and on the road, even though unless your looking directly at them it’s hard to tell. Also, they are one of the few teams that have home and road jerseys that are not inverse of each other.
Finally, the Yankees, yes, even the Yankees. They NY logo on their hat doesn’t match the logo on their jersey. Never has, never will.
Maybe it’s not inconsistency that’s cool, but rather specificity that’s cool.
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.
I believe
that pic of Kwalick is from the NC State game in 1967-a game which doesn’t sound like much now but which actually put PSU on the national map as NC State was undefeated and ranked in the top 5 coming in. Final was 13-8 (the last 2 NC State points were an intentional safety in the final seconds.). PSU had a great goal line stand just prior to that.
tO$U sucks-ALWAYS the right choice!
Back in the 60's
There was one blue strip on the outside of each pant leg. I believe it disappeared never to return in 68 or 69.
I believe that the numbers on the helmets were there until either 75 or 76.
tO$U sucks-ALWAYS the right choice!
No idea
In true old-age brain-fart fashion took the 10-year-old up to BJC last night. Lights out, doors locked, nobody around but a small group in the HC parking lot. Figured we got the wrong night so took him shopping and for food. Got home and discovered it was in Rec Hall…

I would love to see some unis with our original pink and black colors
That would be cool, these are ok though.
How would that Work?
Pink helmets, and a black jersey over pink pants? Nike doesn’t even offer pink as a color option on their website.
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.
Maybe we could follow UMD's lead
and go for the court jester look. Motley black and pink helmets with half the jersey black the other half pink and the pants color reversed.
Yo fumo espaƱol
I think it has to be with a white jersey
Black helmets and pants with a pink stripe, then a white jersey with black numbers with a pink outline. I tied to a come up with a mock up, but literally nobody offers pink as a color on football uniforms.
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.
You should be imprisoned for even contemplating this.

Imprisoned?
Although I am convinced torture is never reliable as an information gathering method, as retribution it would be warranted in this particular instance. Where did I leave that water board?

Is the knicker look still in?
I’m not calling for the 1983 Celtic ball huggers, but there needs to be a little less fabric. You could sail a midsize ship using those shorts as a sail.

I love the understatedness of it
“You want a third jersey for marketing purposes? Fine — I’ve got something really flashy! How about…we do the exact same thing but in the bold, eyecatching color of…grey!”
If they ever did go for an alternate football jersey, I’d be okay if they toned down that brilliant white to a dull grey.
Nike is giving everybody grey this year.
The rules as they apply to the football team do not apply program wide.
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.
Oops..
A ton of teams are wearing it this year for football, off the top of my head, Boise, Wazzu and Ole Miss all wore all grey uniforms (in football) in the last two weeks.
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.
The MWC...
Actually forbids Boise from wearing all Blue at home in conference games. That’s one of the reasons they are wearing Grey.
Also, did I have a post deleted from the thread?
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.
Man, I should think before I post.
Blue and Grey is some other team. We’re blue and white. Why would you want to dress like some other team?
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.

True, Blue and Grey
was a war, or something like that.
Technically, it's the Giants.
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.
What's the matter?
Does the gray look remind you too much of Johnny Reb?
by BSD on Nov 3, 2011 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions
It's a myth that the average rebel soldier wore gray. If they had uniforms at all, they were usually butternut.
But I digress. Penn State has never had gray as a school color, those uniforms don’t look particularly good at all, and they sort of remind me of Ohio State’s alternate uniforms. Ohio State does have a familiar relationship with the color gray; we don’t.
Although, at a deeper level, perhaps you’re right. Perhaps my sub-conscious mind doesn’t want Penn State to associate themselves with a group of people who, by their own actions, brought down incredibly destructive failure upon themselves and their society. I do think Penn State basketball has had enough destructive failure in the past few years.
And, anyway, remember those alternate uniforms they wore at home against Minnesota about a year or two ago? Those were awesome. Those should be the uniforms.

In the words of Hank Williams Jr.
If the south would’ve won we’d of had it made!
by BSD on Nov 3, 2011 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Indeed.
The lower middle class workers and yeomen of the South (Like Hank Williams Jr’s grandfather) would undoubtedly have benefited from the victory of a slaveholding aristocracy which sought to prevent the rise of the very form of free market capitalism without which the people of the South would not have managed to flourish as they have. Because the historical record is absolutely clear: a system of governance and economics based on slavery and privilege is unquestionably the best way to lift the masses out of poverty.
Perhaps the lesson here is that one should not take historical lessons from someone who blames his drinking and drug problems on “family tradition.”

Having lived...
In Southern California, Southeastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey, the South Shore of Long Island, the Southernmost State of the Union (Yes, Hawaii), and now below (sort of) the Mason Dixon line in Texas, I can unequivocally aver that the revisionist history of our fine Southern citizens is mind-bogglingly pestiferous.

How many people own
gray t-shirts with Penn State stuff on them? I know I do.

That's not really the point.
Gray is not a school color.
Yeah, I get it. Our plan is to show up with our fantastic defense and let the chips fall where they may.
Exactly.
I tend to think there’s a pretty big difference between simple t-shirts and uniforms.

Don't forget
The basketball team also abandoned the chipmunk logo for that thing Pitt then semi-ripped off.

Dear Coach Chambers,
Please note that Penn State’s colors are Blue and White. If that is not enough of a palette for you perhaps you have too much free time on your hands.
PS – in case you needed reminding, tO$U (and it’s ugly gray) suck.

Speaking of changes...
These two are subtle, but I’ve noticed that the football team brough back the white laces, which is cool as hell – especially since the swoosh is all be unnoticeable. But they also seem to have gone to white gloves. For the last few years, grey seemed to be the dominant color for receiver gloves. I have to say, I like the white. Now if they’d only bring back the grey facemask.
It's funny because it's Pitt
I was surprised they didn't
The blue facemask is perfect. The gray looked okay when the bars with thicker, but not it would just look cheap. Which means Guido D’Elia will probably lobby for it — he is surprisingly minimalist when it comes to uniforms. Even if it isn’t his call, he’ll take credit for it took.
The gray basektball uniforms makes me think of Georgetown which makes me think of WWTSM.

The white gloves
is the first thing i noticed this season on the field. They look sharp! Unfortunately, Moye and JB went back to gray ones, prolly because they weren’t holding onto the ball with the white ones!
"That's why you don't play! 'Cuz you're no good!" -Joe Paterno
I don't know
The grey looks good on Bama, USC, and ND and each of them were wearing the grey when the thicker facemasks were en vouge. I don’t know, I think it would look kind of cool.
To jesse.’s point regarding the coolness of inconsistencies. The blue facemask just blends in too well, The grey would break it up a bit.
I think that’s what makes the Vikings throwbacks looks so cool, the helmet purple doesn’t match the jersey purple, and the grey facemask just makes it look like a hodgepodge of coolness.
It's funny because it's Pitt
They're fine.
it’s bball, no need to get everyone’s panties in a bunch over what the jerseys look like.
Just so long as they don’t bring back the nut-hugger shorts as part of a ‘throw back’ look, anything they wear is likely going to be fine.
