Penn State Scandal: Board Of Trustees Press Conference Open Thread
Update #1: It's official. Paterno and Spanier ousted, Bradley named interim head coach. No comment on the status of Mike McQueary.
Update #2: Uh, Tim Curley is still employed?
Update #3: Key words tonight as "best interests of the University".
Jim Gardner of WPVI in Philadelphia is reporting that at a 10 p.m. press conference following a Board of Trustees meeting in University Park tonigiht, Penn State will announce that Head Coach Joe Paterno will not coach another game, Graham Spanier has tendered his resignation, and Defensive Coordinator Tom Bradley will be named Interim Head Coach, effective immediately.
The press conference can be seen on ESPNEWS, abc6.com, and probably a hundred other places.

Gotcha
Agree. Even the board admitted they didn’t know any more than anyone else. Did you see the blank look on Surmas face when they asked why Curley only got admin leave and they FIRED Joe?

If Paterno is indeed done, State College is going to turn into hell very quickly. I live in Beaver Avenue and I don’t think I’ll be sleeping any time soon tonight.

I've had this thought several times today
Far from the first time I’ve worried about this, but this incident really hit home that this country has now come closer to the French Revolution than our own.
As a culture, we've been behaving this way symbolically for some time.

You see Troopers/Officers out w/ “hats and bats”, just go home or to a bar…its not a good thing.
Be safe.

Also - if you get sprayed with OC by the cops
Go home, use liquid soap (like Dawn), and stand under cool shower.
The soap will break up the oil based OC, it will still suck but less sucky

I've dealt with my sadness for the past 5 days. The only thing this provokes is anger.
I am as loyal a Penn Stater as you can find. Or at least I was.
This was a tragic event that snowballed into a crisis and is about to become a war.
I have never seen anyone or anything handle a situation as badly as Penn State handled this.
The University has sided with the angry mob against Joe. When the dust settles and the mob is gone, they’ll find a lot (most?) of their formerly loyal supporters gone, too. I’ll be one of them.

This is terrible. I feel for you guys, there are no words to describe how stupid this is.

If the Board fired Joe without learning exactly what he knew and when...
…then they made a big mistake. Reading between the lines of a grand jury report and bowing to the pressure of national media isn’t the best way to do this.
There is so much that nobody has learned yet. Firing Paterno and even Spanier without asking questions is making heads roll for the sake of making heads roll.

Dear Penn State,
As someone who didn’t attend Penn State, I wanted to remain loyal to you. I was willing to accept the situation until you caved to public pressure, admitted to firing a man without evidence, and did it over the phone!
I hope you enjoy the satisfaction you get from the consoling media.

This CNN coverage and video coverage is gonna make us look soo bad on top of how bad the BoT has made us look.
You know what? Who cares?
Penn State, what it was, is DEAD. Anything that happens after this doesn’t matter. IT’S DEAD.
So the feed they cut during the press conference is back up showing riot footage if that's your thing.
The mob is headed to the streets of town...
And the riot is on.

Keep in mind, that was the minimum for an 84 yo man who obviously inspires irrational loyalty in PA and can afford the best defense attorneys. If John Doe did the same thing, he’d be facing charges.

As in, oversaw the police department. Which is a real, live police department. With jurisdiction and everything!
Now, if I wanted to get something pushed to the top of the priority list, don’t you think I’d make a personal phone call to the mayor who would then tell the police chief that his job depended on putting the best guys on the case?

Repetition is nice for some.. I see that he oversaw a lot of things and probably wasn’t particularly skilled to handle many of them. He’s not a “police commishioner [sic].” This is a fail of the whole chain. Joe certainly had the resources to see the whole thing go through and did less. He’s culpable. Give it up, Mr. Physicist.

I would have been less antagonistic.
Then it was discussed rationally and logically with many differing opinions. Right now, not the time.
But furthermore, had Curly and Shultz, you know, done their jobs, this wouldn’t be an issue. If Sandusky hadn’t weaseled his way out of the 1998 incident by talking to the boy whom he raped’s mother this wouldn’t be an issue either

I've been reading all of the front page stuff and a lot of the comments.
It was simply the reaction tonight that made me react. I wish this was dealt with in 1998, but it wasn’t. Then the 2002 stuff came around and people acted like there was no history and basically said don’t do that here. That was, apparently, okay with the people still there (JoePa included), and more boys were exposed to JS.
I do not believe that Schultz was responsible for handling any of the non-financial activities of the police force. Here’s the chain of command from the website

not surprised
After the head of the state police and AG stated that Joe met his legal obligation but questioned his morals, the scorn against Paterno sky rocketed. I could not believe the amount of negativity being focused on him and the national exposure it was getting. I figured the board was going to come to the conclusion that the only way this would die down is if they fired Paterno immediately. I don’t believe it is the right decision nor do I think it was done properly but it’s the only way they figured they would get out of the lime light. It’s really sad that the media and knee jerk reactions can now decide the fate of a person who has done so much for others.

Paterno is not Batman. He may or may not have been able to do more but people wanted him to be a superhero.
Now he’s fired because the media made it like Joe covered this up. He was the only one to report this. I guess the lesson here is put yourself at risk of ruining an investigation and be willing to put yourself in legal trouble for something you THINK may be true because you heard it second hand so that the media ten years down the road doesn’t make an issue of it.
Oh, and, Tim Curley is still employed.

Do not blame MM. That would be terrible. It is extremely difficult to be a witness, and criticizing them will only deter more people from speaking up

Did I hear Levy correctly?
Too enraged to get names of reporters on the phone correct, but did Levy on SC actually ask someone on the street if they think that the students are reacting this way because they “like winning football games on saturdays” and don’t understand the magnitude of the real story?
Was that question actually asked? The real story is that some innocent children have had their lives ruined, what “real story” have you been covering, the victims or a football caoch turned scapegoat sportscenter? This decision is upsetting people because it had nothing to do with the real tragedy that these poor victims had to go through. Its upsetting because not a single answer in that “press conference” made sense. The Board skirts the issue, the media skirts the issue and somehow Curley keeps his job?? I won’t renounce my fandom, I will be there on Saturday because our team deserves better, better if this Board sticks around and makes me pick PSU or Paterno, they may not like the way I answer that question.
I get the paper. I go to the bathroom. I take the paper in there and I scan it. I look at it. The first thing I do is look at who died. All right. Second thing I look at are headlines. Something that says, "Paterno is the Greatest," I read it. -JVP

but i agree w/the bot here. it was unpopular but paterno was getting hung by the national media and everytime, the psu name was being dragged through the mud w/him. he wasn’t responsible but he was associated with it. but for everyone who carries the penn state name everyday, this had to be done.
the media is a joke (see matich et al) but this is the world we live in. it’s a sad cruel place. but it also gave you 4 (or more or less) years of your life that you wouldn’t trade for anything. it instilled a spirit in all of us which cannot die, for if it does, they win.
my mother says that paterno retiring was him saying, “i did nothing wrong, i do regret what happened and wish i had done more but i am not wrong. fire me if you must, complete my crucifixion, but i am innocent.” the board did it, they had to, i believe that and support their decision.

Right
Honestly, I thought they should have fired Spanier, Curly, and Shultz. Laid the entire mess on them, especially since curly and shultz are indicted.
Then, offered JoePa an extension, which he would have turned down. But say something along the lines of ‘the only person in this mess to act appropriately and within his means and willingly express remorse for things out of his control. He still upholds everything he has lived for and stood by. He is one of the few adults in the room. Right now PSU needs him’
Whether you believe it or not, thats the right PR spin for the university. They lay blame on those that are most responsible and clean up JoePas reputation-which is really the school’s reputation. They force the story back to what it is and was, and remove JoePa from the spotlight.
Sure, the administration would get hammered, but the public face remains in tact.
