I CANT AND WONT
Ok, I’ve calmed down a bit from before. I can’t believe how mad with rage I actually was. Physically angry. If someone would have looked at me wrong I would have fought them, and yes I’m embarrassed about that now, but it doesn’t change how I felt/feel

CSN showed footage of Joe and Sue outside their house...
No real news, but Joe seemed upset (or at least incredulous) that they fired him with a phone call.

Seriously the students and a lot of the Penn State fans feel Joe is being made a scapegoat for a failure much larger than what he did or did not do. I just hope it stays somewhat peaceful.

I understand what the board did
from a corporate stuffed-shirt point of view, but it’s unfair to Paterno. I must have missed that part of the grand jury report where Paterno is indicted. All of the criticism of him is made in hindsight, and Paterno was failed by numerous people around him.

And please channel a small fraction of the outrage here, because this is sickening.
There are very real victims involved here. Very real. Please keep that in mind.
http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/11/sister_of_sandusky_victim_talk.html
In a parallel universe, going to class might be a nice distraction, to get her mind off the chaos surrounding the arrest of the man accused of molesting her brother.
But not as a junior at Penn State, where students are making jokes about being "Sanduskied."
"I can’t escape it," said the junior, whose brother was allegedly molested in a shower by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky when he was 11.
"I’ve been going to minimal classes, because every class I go to I get sick to my stomach. People are making jokes about it. I understand they don’t know I’m involved and it was my brother, but it’s still really hard to swallow that."
…
For this student and her family, the pain has lasted years. But there was no preparing for how Sandusky’s much-awaited arrest would explode into a scandal that will end the career of legendary coach Joe Paterno and her university’s president.
And in all of that, a message is lost.
"I’ve just been really upset about it all because a lot of people aren’t focusing on the victims in this," she said. "And instead they’re focusing on other things, like football. As much as you shouldn’t blame the football players … they should be focusing on their respect for the families and what they’ve been through."

Agreed.
I just posted this in a now dead thread, but I think its at least worth a thought:
Honestly, I thought they should have fired Spanier, Curly, and Shultz. Laid the entire mess on them, especially since curly and shultz are indicted.
Then, offered JoePa an extension, which he would have turned down. But say something along the lines of ‘the only person in this mess to act appropriately and within his means and willingly express remorse for things out of his control. He still upholds everything he has lived for and stood by. He is one of the few adults in the room. Right now PSU needs him’
Whether you believe it or not, thats the right PR spin for the university. They lay blame on those that are most responsible and clean up JoePas reputation-which is really the school’s reputation. They force the story back to what it is and was, and remove JoePa from the spotlight.
Sure, the administration would get hammered, but the public face remains in tact.

This man is absolute class. I’m not a Penn State fan…but I am a college football fan…and Joe Paterno is everything college football should be. I’m shedding tears down here in Alabama. I have absolutely nothing to do with Penn State, and this whole thing is causing me, a grown man, to cry openly. I cannot even fathom what you all must be feeling.
And even through it all, JoePa comes out of his home and tells the students he loves them and loves Penn State.
I can only hope to be that strong one day.

Everything college football should be?
So college football should be covering up the rape of children?
We don't know that he did...
Imagine yourself at work. You see a fellow employee doing something unethical. You report it to your boss.
Now…what else do you hear about it? Nothing, because your boss is under zero obligation to tell you anything about it.
Is it so hard to imagine that when JoePa inquired about the status of the investigation, his boss told him “it’s being handled” and JoePa believed him?
Look, I’m not making excuses for him. He should have followed up. How many situations in your life do you look back on and think “wow, I should have handled that differently.” ? If you’re like roughly 100% of the rest of the world, the answer is “a whole fugging lot”.
If it turns out that coach Paterno was actively involved in a cover up, I’ll feel differently. However, based on his impeccable track record, I can only assume, for now, that Paterno alerted his superior and assumed that his superior alerted the authorities.
Absolutely everyone who knows the man speaks to his character. Even down here in Alabama we revere the man for his character. I believe that his life has earned him the benefit of the doubt.

As a follow-up
We still don’t know if he DID follow up (you can even imagine he mentioned it more than once to Curley) and was told “we looked into it and nothing came of it” OR “it is being handled appropriately”. Without getting more of the story (short of grilling the witness or the accused — both of which are, supposedly, close to you and friends of yours) and not being the witness yourself, what else could/would one do? IF JoePa truly was only told “I saw them horsing around in the shower”, doesn’t it at least make sense JoePa wasn’t quite as culpable as some are making him out to be? The point of this strawman is to illustrate we don’t really know all the facts. If it does turn out that JoePa was part of the cover-up or didn’t follow up because he was afraid it would bring the program down, then I’ll be just as pissed as everyone. For now, I’m severely disappointed but willing to withhold final judgement until we hear more from Joe and the rest of the players.

It may play out that Paterno had a bigger role than it first appeared in this whole mess. But no one should be jumping to that conclusion until we find out more.
Instead, the board dumped the coach unceremoniously. Paterno deserved better, at least due process. Shit, Sandusky was investigated for several year before charged. It took 4, 5 days for Paterno to be publicly convicted.

All I know
is that – eventually – ONE of two groups of people is going to look REALLY stupid. it will either be those who support Joe Paterno still and all he stood for…or it will be the media, who put Joe on a crucifix and then lit him on fire. God I hope it’s the media.

there are more than 2 camps
I’m on the side of Joe Paterno and due process. If it is found that he did know more and where any rational person would have done more, then I will be with the rest crucifying him. As far as I know right now he was told there was inappropriate horsing around, reported it, followed up and was told that there was an investigation that turned up nothing, and went on his way. That is what pisses me off by far the most (outside of the disgusting actions that started this whole thing): just fired because of media pressure.

I lost my faith in people when I read the grand jury report, I lost my patience with the media a few minutes later, and I watched the only man I admired more than my grandfather go out in a ball of flames, while so many people gleefully celebrated it. I lost my faith period today.

I wish someone would have asked Suma: "…so how many of the BOT’s knew of any of JS’s actions – other than the ‘98 investigation. Would have been very telling – and on public record – "we’re on to you..!"

Exactly
So one of two things, or maybe 3: he/TC/Span totally buried it, or they had discussed “individually” with a select few of what happed/how to handle it. You know they didn’t discuss on the record. I believe the board will be wiped clean…

Feelings
I still feel pure and utter outrage about the firing of Joe, mixed with disbelief and helplessness.
As for the riot, I understand. I knew it would happen. I’ve just about unfollowed half the people on twitter, as they continually posted ignorance. They don’t understand. Joe is our grandfather, we just watched him get tarred and feather without any sort of due dilligence. This is grief we feel. The riot is just what happens when thousands of people hit stage two of grief all at once, anger. It may not be right or proper and doesn’t look great, but honestly, I don’t give a crap how it looks to other people, they haven’t tried to understand from the get go.
I know deep down if I wasn’t three hours away, I’d be there right now with them, expressing my anger in the same animalistic way they are. I can’t get mad at them for that.

Sue Paterno came out to talk and she was crying.
She stated “Thank you for all the support, we love you and always have. Go Penn State!”
Joe then came out to join and the media attempted to swarm him, instead students demanded that the media leave Joe alone.
Joe then stated “Thank you for all the suppport. Go get a good night’s sleep. Go study.”

A serious question
If it does come out that Joe had no reason to do anything else (i.e. he was told they investigated and found no substantial evidence) does he have any legal recourse?
Can he file for wrongful termination / libel?
Doesn't matter
And I don’t give a shit. The BoT fucked up. And it can’t be undone.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's clear that you and I see eye to eye
I’m just wondering about any legal recourse that could clear his name. And more to the point, lawsuits that (knowing Paterno) he could use money towards helping the victims.
In all honesty
In 40 years, Joe Pa is remembered for everything good he stood for. And this won’t be a blip on the radar. I really believe that.

You just compared a speedboat to the titanic.

Maybe Michael Jackson is a truer comparison.

You might want to rethink whether or not people will remember his entire legacy.

I hate ESPN so much, I had turned it off this morning when I couldn't take it anymore
But it was the channel on when I turned the tv on just a few minutes ago.
They showed the press conference and then said “The first question after that was who would be the next coach? That’s perspective”
As if to say that football is the most important thing ever, that we don’t even care about the kids. That Penn Staters are scum, it was in his tone.
It was probably their dumbass reporter who asked it. The perspective of the media needs to be reviewed THEY are the ones who cared more about football than the kids when they asked that question.
I’m so disgusted on so many levels.

Iwatched the press conference and I'm not so sure that that was the first question asked.
It might have been the first question answered, but I don;t think it was the first thing called out.
I wish that when this all ended

I was at work
I was unable to.
All I was able to see was what ESPN presented, and then their commentary at the end.
I don’t doubt you when you say it wasn’t the first asked, I doubt the way ESPN presented it after it reached their cutting room.
Rogue, I respect you a lot for your opinions over the past few days
I meant no disrespect, I was going to recap for you if you hadn;t seen it.
For the most part, 95% of the questions asked were very, very good ones. Among the ones I remember are:
- You said you’d wait for the investigation to play out for Curley / Schultz but you’re firing Paterno without an investigation?
- What harm could come from Paterno coaching one more game?
- What evidence beyond the GJ testimony did you have to make this decision?
Just to name a few.
Never felt any.
I’m discombobulated, I wasn’t sure if you thought I was talking about what I saw in the press conference directly, which I’m going to have to see if I can find without commentary, uncut and live or what I saw on ESPN just a little while ago.
Those are the questions that need to be answered that you list there, and should have been among themselves while they made that decision.
I saw a quote from the statement, it included the phrases (maybe paraphrasing here) “This decision was made with thorough deliberation” and “We don’t know all the facts”. Those two quotes/paraphrases speak volumes about how the decision was made.
You didn't sound hostile, I was just making sure
And trust me, there were many VERY good questions beyond thta that were asked.
Unfortunately, Surma sidestepped all of them.

The humor of the reporter crying about a rock hitting his leg is not lost on me. But if you’ve been in the middle of any of these things (especially the ones from the late 90s), you know it can turn bad really quick. I’m just saying I wouldn’t want to be the guy with the ESPN microphone flag.
