Guys, I don't want to tell you how to react to this because that's not my steez. But I'm going to pretty much guarantee that your first feeling will be RAGE. Take a second.
A friend of mine sent me a link to the popular Texas Longhorns forum ShaggyBevo. There is a thread there wherein certain fans and presumably alumni and current students at Texas are planning on attending the TicketCity Bowl with a dude dressed in a PedoBear outfit. Here is a link to the thread.
I admit that I'd be too close to the situation to actually appreciate any humor in this. But seriously, this is not funny. It's pretty much like if South Park and Jackass had a crack baby. It might make a few people laugh in the "holy shit, I can't believe you just did that" way that people laugh, but it's not clever really at all.
I understand how the internet works, and how controversial or shocking things are "funny" when people "have the balls" to actually do something crazy. But the classless to funny ratio on this is off the charts. Coming up with the idea and trying to push the envelope is one thing. But there are people on this forum presumably donating money to this guy so he can buy a $200 PedoBear outfit and wear it to a game that involves 2 teams to which he has no affiliation.
I really hate being serious, but child sexual abuse is incredibly widespread and is one of our biggest problems as a society. If you're willing to pay SOMEONE ELSE to make a joke about it instead of putting that money toward something helpful or constructive, you are seriously, seriously fucked up. I apologize to those of you from Texas - I know it sucks being grouped in with a few unrepresentative people and judged, so let's keep the anti-Texas rhetoric down. As long as y'all don't actually elect Craig James, we're cool.
I don't really want to say a lot more about this. If you go to the game and see any of these clowns, don't kill them. Don't even react. Funny is funny. Shocking only works when people react.

If it were just PSU fans at the game, I'd agree with "don't even react".
Problem is, you’re gonna have a lot of Houston fans and a lot of casual Texas residents at the game. And boy will they be reacting. Better to heckle the guy and make his life suck than to let everyone else at the stadium enable him.

Sunshine is the best disinfectant
Just try to take pictures and get names of those involved. Try to get them on video explaining why it is appropriate to make fun of harming children in this way. Ask them if they believe this is an appropriate way to represent their university, etc. Get as much documented and on the record, and then publicize the heck out of it.
There should be no violent reaction to this. If there is, it will not reflect postively on Penn State.

wow, just wow
Unbelievable how so many are finding humor in pedophilia. There is no humor here, period. We have problems, our society, and this is unacceptable.
I live in Michigan – I saw a former co-worker last week and first thing he says to me is: “It was funny for about 2 weeks to laugh at Penn State, but it got old” — My reply: “There’s nothing funny about this and it never was funny, good to see you, A**hole.” And I walked away.
What I would like to see (assuming these morons do go thru with this): is for Houston fans or even other Texas fans at the game to be the ones to stand up to this for KIDS, supporting PSU would be nice but is secondary – this “joke/prank” is really against kids and victims.

I saw this posted on another forum
I’d put the odds of this actually happening at between zero and 15 percent. I know it’s hard to imagine, but sometimes people will exaggerate or say things on anonymous internet forums that they probably wouldn’t say to someone’s face. This is just a bunch of yahoos cracking jokes to each other and patting each other on the back. I wouldn’t be too worried about it.

Honestly
I got exactly what I expected. There comments were exactly what I expected from a group of adults that think what they have planned is funny—and want to be seen on tv.
I was suprised that a few people actually supported my statements and that one even went as far as telling them as a UT alumni that he was embarressed by them.
by Jeannine Pinaula on Dec 15, 2011 12:10 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah
I thought it was funny that a guy who had just been talking about raising money to buy and wear an inflammatory Pedo Bear costume and who expressed a desire to both 1. videotape his costume and other people’s reactions and 2. sit close to the field to try to get on TV, had the nerve to stand in righteous indignation and claim that what he is planning on doing is nothing compared to the shame of merely rooting for the football team from Penn State.
Seriously, he needs to stop pretending that his motive is another other than to be an asshole. At least own it.

Couldn't help myself...
I created an account and responded:
Honestly, I don’t even know where to begin. While your little stunt may be “funny” for it’s shock factor—and will certainly “get you noticed on TV”, it is shameful. Think for a second about who else might be watching the game—who may see you on TV—the victims and their families. All your little stunt will do it add to their pain and suffering, by you belittling what happened to them.
Do you really think that your costume will bother the players or coaches? The PSU fans? The Houston fans? Do you think that Joe Paterno is going to be crying in his living room because of your costume? I really doubt it.
Sure, you may insight a few PSU fans to be pissed off—but I can tell you from experience—we have developed pretty thick skin over the years, and especially the past month. So maybe you cause a few people to shake their heads, or tell you how “funny” you are. The message you are really sending is, that Texans “don’t get it”. That to them child abuse is a laughable subject matter. And while I know that you don’t represent the majority of the people in your state, or even your school—-as we have learned recently—people tend to lump everyone together because of association.
So you waste your $200 on a costume, and another $20 bucks on a t-shirt, and another $50 on a game ticket—-you get on TV and show the nation just how classy or classless fans in Texas are. Meanwhile, I will cheer on my team—a team I remind you that had nothing to do with anything that is going on—and while I can’t make the bowl game this year—I will be wearing a new t-shirt I just got too—a t-shirt that says STILL PROUD TO BE A PENN STATER #ProudPSUforRAINN. And I will know that instead of spending money to laugh at child abuse, I spent money to just maybe help a victim, or stop abuse.

Its not even that smart or funny...
If the TX lowlifes are so classless as to make fun of child molestation, the least they could do is to be original and funny about it. Dressing up as pedobear is simply ripping off the ideas of Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

This was posted on the ShaggyBevo thread by Hooked By Horns:
I don’t think I have ever been more revolted by my fellow Texans and alleged Longhorn and football fans than by the contents of this thread. The football players you intend to harass were 8-12 years old when the alleged 2002 incident occurred and have absolutely nothing to do with this. Sandusky was not an employee of the University at the time and, if you were actually cognizant of the facts of this case, you would know:
1. There are at least four versions of Mike McQueary’s story, to date.
2. The Grand Jury report is not a transcript but a prosecutor’s summary that is used to secure indictment and may indeed contain “facts” that are not in evidence.
I would continue, but anything else would most assuredly be wasted on the denizens of this thread with their undulating cleavage avatars and unbelievable stance that child rape is somehow worthy of childish publicity stunts. As a 1983 graduate of UT and a 25 year veteran of a specialized department of Texas law enforcement, I find your attitude and potential behavior reprehensible. I am ashamed that you are from my state, potentially from my University, and that you intend to represent either in such a heinous manner. Should you intend to engage in any harrasing or unlawful behavior, I am certain that you will find yourself facing authorities who do not share your zeal for such iniquitous nonsense, and you will deserve the full force of whatever the law will bear.
How many of you consider yourselves Christians, Texans, or even humans? “What starts here changes the world” is to be a power for positive change. You childish, churlish ambassadors of nonsense disgust me as a Christian, as a Texan, and as a human.
