I'm just really glad that we gave McGloin a chance to become the guy.

And when he outperformed Bolden, we thought, “Well, he’s not good enough to be the guy. Neither’s Bolden. But now that McGloin is better, let’s just switch to one QB. Surely that won’t screw us later on.”

If McGloin can't play

and we have to play Bolden who hasn’t seen significant minutes in 3 months for no real good reason, then yes, it’s related.

No offense – but have you watched Penn State’s football games at all this season?

Bolden was awful and was getting progressively worse as the season went on.

Hopefully this humbles McGloin a little bit

We can all grumble about his play on the field, but that’s not all his fault. But his attitude certainly is, and it’s in desperate need of improvement. I hope he’s okay, but I hope this teaches him a lesson, too, if even his teammates are fed up with his crap.

We don’t know. Let’s not be the Board of Trustees here. Fights in practice happen. This wouldn’t be that big of a deal in any other year.

Curtis Drake shows up with pack of players. Left hand in coat pocket.

Via Ben. The raises one big question: Are the players behind Drake? Did he show up when the others show up, or did they all come together?

Is the team against Matt in this instance? Maybe I’m reading alittle too much into it, but, I dunno, that gives me pause

I think people are going a little too nuts over this. I would put to much on the fact that police were called. I have a feeling we’re going to see the police called when two guys look at each other wrong from now on.

We’ve heard Drake went to the meeting so clearly he wasn’t arrested. McGloin’s not in the hospital so obviously the rumor that he was badly injured is probably false.

Not saying it’s good, but anyone whose played sports on an all guys team knows fights occasionally do happen. Always a shame to see.

I'm pretty sure a fight on campus is going to get a report

Likely nothing comes of it, but remember the reason the US Department of Eduacation is investigating PSU in the whole Sandusky affair is due to issues with reporting campus crimes. Assault is one of the categories I believe so expect the cops to be dotting I’s and crossing T’s.

In fact that whole stretch of 22 scares me.

And you haven’t been to a seedy strip club until you’ve been to Castle Shannon. Tennyson Lodge will make you rethink your desire to see women with no clothes on.

That was our old meeting place in my college days.

We’d meet our buddies from IUP on our ways home. Of course back then it was just the Climax….only one building (and the girls hung an onion around their waist…which was the style at the time). Still BYOB and full nudity.

Good times!

The Pittsburgh/State College drive is almost all highway now.

But it has lost a lot of character. I haven’t stopped at “Ray & Dave’s….This is the Place” in years. Of course, have you seen the Super Champs in Altoona? Neither have I, cause I go to Hooters instead, but it looks impressive.

...may we compete with fierce intensity, with the gifts that we have been given...

by jesse. on Dec 17, 2011 5:53 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, different back in my day.

Had to go through Cresson, Altoona, etc. The entire drive was dangerous as all hell. I crashed on it once.

by J Breezy on Dec 17, 2011 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

I can remember the pre-super highway days.

And I thought those were bad. I can’t imagine having to drive country roads all the way.

My freshman year I sometimes took the Water Street way.

My dad taught me that one. By the time I was a senior I couldn’t even remember how to do it!

(Had my car there my freshman year…registered under my sister, who was a soph.)

by J Breezy on Dec 17, 2011 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

Anyway, as memory serves...

..the Water Street way was even more “rural”.

This was in the early 80s.

by J Breezy on Dec 17, 2011 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

There is back way at the Tyrone exit...

…that drops you right into Boalsburg. That is a very rural route. Saves sometime though, at least it does if your going to Boalsburg.

I insisted that Dad take a drug test.

Because he was a drug addict, and a criminal. So he wanted by client to take one too, and she didn’t care, because she is not a drug addict and a criminal.

We had an agreement that was premised upon the parties having clean urine screens. Dad tested positive for a synthetic version of heroin that he had a prescription for. Mom couldn’t piss in front of the cops.

I went to Dad’s lawyer and told him that he could have the deal without the piss test, or we could wait for the results, which would be clean. However, if we waited for the results, I was going to demand a trial, because of the drug test.

Dad took the deal, and I went to Smokey Bones a winner.

Went to both of them years ago for a bachelor party.

At one of them I complimented the dancer by saying she should dance at The Farm (a really bad strip bar on old 22 near the WV border…full nudity, yet they still sold alcohol…illegal as hell, but they got away with it somehow) and she thought I meant dance at an actual farm. So she took it the wrong way and said something smart to me. I was all liquored up and started saying things like “Yeah…you take off your clothes for a living. So what did you get on your SATs??”.

So we go to the other one and I was sitting on the step to the stage (to get a better view). Some other group of guys got pissed cause they couldn’t see. That almost started a big rumble until “security” made me (and by extension my buddies) leave.

Went there for some lame-o bachelor party over 20 years ago. The “girl” came out to dance on the bar and me and my buddy went and played video games. Yeah, she was that bad.

I know this sounds hard to believe in light of these posts...

…but I really haven’t been to a lot of strip clubs and also don’t much like them. I was either dragged to them by my buddies (went with the crowd) or most of them were bachelor parties. It was usually a lot of fun because there was a gang of us (so almost anything would be fun), but they were never a habit for me or something I preferred to do. Heck, once I fell asleep at one. Couple of buddies who worked with my wife got a kick out of telling her, “Yep, naked women right in front of him and he’s snoozing.”

Once I went to one in Weirton to celebrate a co-worker’s leaving for a new job. I didn’t know the guy real well, but other buddies did and they knew I knew my way around Weirton…that’s mainly why I went. So I get us to this place (which you had to go to the back door, which was locked, and they slid a peephole open to see who you were first like a speakeasy), but my wife wanted me home by a certain time. I didn’t have a watch, but noticed one of the dancers did (that was about all she had on). So I call her over and she thinks it’s to get a tip and instead I ask her for the time. She got pissed; I got the hell out of there because I was late.

Just because it has good parking does not mean it's a shoddy place

There is a certain panache in pulling an RV up to park across 4 spaces in a strip club parking lot. Additional succinct(ish) praises follow in lieu of 2000 word post that would inject far too much creepiness into the already sketchy PR my screen name has collected:
1. The poles are 27 feet tall. There are four of them. All dancers are adept at maneuvering upon them.
2. The strippers are hot. They have gotten sooo hot. Between ND 2007 & Bama 2011, the improvements in this category cannot be undersold. I’ve lived in DC for 15 years and the women at the End Zone right now can absolutely pass muster with those at Camelot.
3. Free beer. (/waits. /let’s that sink in). Yes, the bar out the back (not in the same structure as the nudity, to circumvent PA LCB) now just gives away their beer. Kegs of Yuengling & some lites.
4. Zero pressure. After you drop the $20 bones to walk through the door, you could spend hours there without spending another dollar. They have against the wall seating that practically invites it. Granted, the non-cheapskates have more fun in the around-the-pole seats, but it can be done.

by jtothep on Dec 19, 2011 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

My roommates took me there for my 20th birthday

They were all 21, so they could drink on the beer porch. I was 20, so I got very drunk before we got there. I puked all over the inside of the bathroom door, then ran outside and hid from the bouncer in the bushes while I waited for someone to come pick me up. Good times.

I'm not sure if they still do this

but when I was in college, they would suspend your driver’s license if you had a seizure. I remember when I was a sophomore in the dorms, one of the girls from the floor below us had a friend visiting for the weekend. She was hanging out in our room when she had a seizure. We had no clue what to do, so we called 911. When she game back from the hospital the next morning, I remember she was totally pissed at us for calling 911. We couldn’t understand why. As a 49ers fan I can say I fully support the NFL for suspending him for Monday’s game. Of course if the Niners are without Joe Staley and Patrick Willis it likely won’t matter.

The Steelers aren't that complicated.

If you can get some turnovers, and you can, they are very beatable. If you don’t get any, forget about it.

I dunno, Niners played like pure crap last week. If willis is out that’s a big hole in their d. And the niners offense will likely only score about 10 points. I’m not overly optimistic, but we’ll see.

Partly I think it’s just part of being a fan of the niners and the orioles. I just expect them to suck, so when they’re decent it’s difficult for me to accept.

I’m not sure, but I think if Baltimore wins, you might see some Steelers sit who otherwise would have played through injuries.

Rational choice would predict this.

I don’t know how the league removes the incentive to set-up for the playoffs rather than compete fully in the present though. It happens in every sport (e.g., set your pitching rotation).

by jesse. on Dec 17, 2011 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

I tend to be very skeptical of these "bias" arguments out there,

but the league is doing a fine job of making it appear that they are prosecuting a vendetta against Deebo. The stuff against the Browns last year is dubious at best — particularly the Cribbs hit — he was running the ball in heavy traffic near the line of scrimmage. To deem intent there is bogus. They expect x-ray vision? So the rationale for a suspension now is Harrison’s “history.” Well, that history is at least partially contrived. The hit on McCoy was clearly punishable. But, it should have been a fine, not suspension.

by SubLime on Dec 17, 2011 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

The Steelers bring a lot of it on themselves though.

They are just so obstinate about their opinion that they aren’t doing anything wrong. I thought the suspension was a little bit much too, but what else is left to do? The team doesn’t seem to be getting the message.

The other thing I think...

Is that the college coaches need to do a better job of coaching these kids. You can’t fine Taylor Mays, but seriously, that kid was trying to kill people out there. Including himself. His hit against Jordan Norwood would have pulled a 50K fine in the league, your lucky if you get a flag in college ball.

I’ve seen three hits (at least) today, in two totally non-descript college games, that would pull fines in the league. None of them were flagged. The NFL is dealing with a lot of really talented guys, many of which were coached either poorly, selfishly, or both.

...may we compete with fierce intensity, with the gifts that we have been given...

by jesse. on Dec 17, 2011 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

As tired as this explanation sounds,

it does go back to coaching fundamentals, to certainly include tackling. Additionally, highlight content rewards the violent hit. Remember the “Jacked-Up” segment on ESPN’s Monday night show. Too many keep yacking about getting some notoriety seemingly unaware of that term’s association with dishonorable attention. The word’s application has become perversely correct in this context.

Yea I felt the suspension was more a cumulative thing do to the fact that fining him wasn’t having an effect. In the eyes of the NFL.

by psuwresfan on Dec 17, 2011 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

I'm a Steelers fan

And I actually think the suspension is justifiable. The NFL keeps fining Harrison, and yet he still refuses to tackle guys below the shoulders. McCoy is not a RB, he isn’t going to juke anybody out. Harrison could’ve and should’ve put his hat in McCoy’s midsection, still demolished him, and come away clean. Instead he simply ducked his head at the last second and put the crown on McCoy’s facemask.

I love the guy, I love the intensity he plays with, just wish he had some discipline.

Going from watching Penn State’s team discipline (recent events notwithstanding) to watching the Steelers can be maddening. The penalties, the illegal hits, Antonio Brown, I get frustrated sometimes.

Just as an aside, I have never seen a player that is as obviously as talented as Antonio Brown is, who is less fun to watch. I mean, if Curtis Drake still feels the need to knock somebody else out, I recommend him.

I agree on Brown.

His act is embarrassing.

As for Harrison, yep…he deserved the suspension. Dude is a thug, but a helluva player.

Burgers are paranoid almost to the point of insanity about the league and the Steelers. The league is NOT out to get them. They bring all this “attention” on themselves. Best one I heard last week was a fan who said the league has been against the Steelers ever since Obama appointed Rooney as ambassador to Ireland. Yep, they’re that paranoid!

by J Breezy on Dec 18, 2011 7:52 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know....

Paranoid? I don’t think so (notwithstanding the Rooney thing, which I had never heard). The Steelers are one of the most popular teams in the league, and they are pretty clear in their distaste for these new rules. They are the obvious place to start if you are trying to make a point. James Harrison specifically. I do think the league has a bit of vendetta against the Steelers, but like I said above, a fair amount of it is self inflicted.

Here is the other thing. They’re 10-3. They’ve gone to the Super Bowl 3 times in 5 years and they’ve won two. They’re really good. Part of the reason is that they are a real scary squad. These hit play a role. Harrision hit McCoy, who comes back a few plays later (because Roethlisberger came back, and he had to prove he was tough too). 60 inch HD TV’s don’t lie, that kid had a concussion. I said so before the play started. What’s he do? Throws a stupid interception. Ballgame. I almost got lynched on the Steeler blog over this, but that is the exact shit Buddy Ryan used to pull in Philly, it’s just a bit more subtle.

That’s why they don’t knock it off. That’s why Harrison got suspended. That’s why it’s not paranoia. Nobody wants to admit that their favorite team plays a little dirty. But the Steelers play a little dirty. The standard is the standard (except when it’s the expectation).

...may we compete with fierce intensity, with the gifts that we have been given...

I agree with 1)

2) I don’t think is so clear. From what I’ve pieced together from the twitter (and ignoring everything that came from Matt’s page) Matt and Drake were having a back and forth in practice, Drake came up to him in the locker room after to make amends, Matt started it up again. This is where it becomes unclear, the seizure thing I don’t think has been truly confirmed yet but somehow Matt ended up on the ground and had a seizure or was hit, some reports say the seizure occured and Drake didn’t actually hit him while he was down, while other reports don’t indicate a seizure and say that Drake popped him and he was knocked out. They may not be mutually exclusive.

But let’s not go all ESPN on them and actually wait for the facts before opinions are formed.

If the heisman was given out on December 23rd, the world would explode

Because Paul Jones would be up there to receive it

Forget the 409 wins and 2 national championships. Joe Paterno helped mold thousands of young men into productive members of our society.

I vaguely remember from when I was like 11 a Barry McGuire song

talkin’ about we’re standin’ on the eve of some Mayan shit. I think that’s it exactly.

Good news everybody!

I found Fat Tire at my local grocer! No more bleach fumes for me. Time to get drunk like a responsible adult!

Beer

Just got done brewing some beer...

to come back to BSD for this.

Experimenting with an apparently old PA Dutch recipe from “Pow-wows, or, The Long Lost Friend.” It’s made from molasses. Probably going to suck. But couldn’t resist giving it a try. Had a few home brews while doing it… a heavily dry-hopped Irish stout. Tasty.

But now I’m on to tequila.

Maybe I’ll get in a fight. I’m 3/4 Irish and fairly cocky, and I now have to restore the good reputation of my kinfolk.

My father-in-law does.

Apparently, his grandmother used to practice a lot of the different things in the book. We were reading it last Christmas and came upon a recipe for beer (seemed odd to me). The recipe was totally unique in comparison to anything I’ve seen made so I wrote it down. I found the recipe the other day and I’m making it.

Relax have a homebrew!

I did a 15gal all grain “Dogfish 60 min IPA” clone today. OG 1.070. Kinda wish that 10% ABV was finished to help me deal with this PSU mess.

BTW, black strap molasses in beer is very similar to brewing with treacle (sp?). I believe Treacle is used in Yuengling Porter and other porters. I would bet your beer will be awesome.

(Köelsch and dry cider on draft. Belgian Wit in secondary – added lemongrass, cardamom and hibiscus to the usual players.)

There can only be one

I guess Shane “The Highlander” MacGregor will have to play QB.

It has become clear to our tailgate group

That Shane McGregor = Ronnie “Sunshine” Bass

Can someone separate the pepper from the fly shit?

About all these situations re McGloin, Drake, Bolden, et al.? I’m exhausted from trying to chase rumors — would rather hear accurate info.

I don't think there's enough accurate info out there

at least nothing corroborated that we know exactly what did or did not happen.

Which is why we need to cool our collective jets a bit, NC.

There is a tone of near-hysteria, what with the JS situation, this, and now Bolden’s “minor” legal situation. Let’s all back away from the ledge.

So we should wait until we have all the facts?

In the information age?? Waiting for all the facts is so pre-Al Gore.

It would be irresponsible.

Kiss my grits, everyone of you!

J/k!!

Al Gore? You mean the individual single-handedly responsible for global warming as he eats his way towards Dec 21, 2012?

Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads. And I’m gonna need ’bout ten quarts of anti-freeze, preferably Prestone. No, no make that Quaker State.

Which is why I haven’t posted much of anything on this subject. We don’t know much yet.
