Penn State Ends the Year in the AP Top 10.
Unfortunately it's the AP's top ten news stories, not the football poll.
PSU ended up ranked 6th. Typical of the way it's been covered, this line is included in the summary:
"Paterno wasn't charged, but expressed regret he didn't do more after being told there was a problem."
Yeah, I guess that pretty much sums it all up. There was a child sex abuse scandal. Paterno knew about it and even by his own admission didn't do nearly enough.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but
“in hindsight, I wish I had done more” is, in no way, an admission of guilt or failure.
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

Pretty sure JB was expressing disgust at the writer's over-simplification.
It truly scares me that “with the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more” has become an admission of culpability (not personal guilt, but actual criminal guilt).
I’ll tell you why. Because we’re talking about Joe Freaking Paterno here.

As Fred Sanford once said, "El correcto".
Yes, I was definitely being sarcastic. I think I speak for all of us when I say the media coverage of this entire affair has been sickening.
For some reason, I couldn't remember if you were in the "PSU sucks" crowd.
I apologize for the mixup.

WE are left sifting through the wreckage
THEY are on to whichever Kardashian ass cheek is to be covered next via TMZ…“LIVE – LATE BREAKING!!!”
"my dad says Michigan used to be good"
"LIVE--LATE BREAKING!!!".......
Unfortunately, it’s the Kardashian brother’s ass cheek to be covered….I’m not into that, but if anyone else is, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Well, the economy I agree is more important.
And so are a lot of other things that happened that had more impact on more people.
Honestly, and this may sound cold, I don’t think this is even close to one of the top stories. Well, maybe I should say it’s not one of the most important or “life affecting” stories. I guess it is a top story because the media made it one.
No disrespect to the victims and their families…of course to them it was the most life affecting story of the year. But many others suffered tragedies (many the same kind) this year as well. Just because the media deem this one to be more important or life shattering doesn’t mean it actually is. It’s sort of like the last space shuttle accident. Pretty sure 7 people were killed in it and it was HUGE news. I get that it’s a unique way to die, but that same day probably at least 50 other people in our country were killed in automobile accidents. Just because those accidental and horrific deaths weren’t national news didn’t make them any less awful to the families and friends of the victims.
I can’t really express this well. Let me just say that bad things happen all the time and they suck bad for everyone touched by them.
Breezy, I know what you mean
We have taken the word Tradgedy and applied to to almost everything in this day and age. For the people directly involved it is a tradgedy, and that is not understated. But for an entire country, is one small incident a tradgedy, that is up to the indiviual to make that decision. I don’t think that everything has to be made to see like this is the worst possible thing to ever happen in the history of man kind. Only for a new thing to happen the next day and get the same treatment.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose - Janis Joplin
I think it's what sells in the media.
Bad news sells papers and garners more viewers so I guess that’s why they play these things up. I quit watching the news years ago and part of the reason was because they only seemed to trumpet the bad news. What’s “news” to them certainly wasn’t what I wanted to hear. But we’ve been conditioned all our lives to think bad news is pretty much the most important news. Some of that may be because as the old saying goes, “misery loves company”.
We’re treading on the thin ice of perceived insensitivity with what we’re saying, but we certainly don’t mean it that way. And being that the BDS lot is an intelligent bunch, I think they get what we’re saying.
Calling Professor SubLime!
(J, this is me using your comment as a way to create another discussion)
SubLime,
1) Misery loves company? “Woop woop.”
2) Care to comment on sensationalism and how it relates to the dumbing down of our language? I lack the intellectual skills to handle the job properly.

If you live in Centre County, this story is the economy.
Centre County has been first or second in unemployment rates in the state forever.
The economic impact of this shitstorm is yet to be measured, but is already being felt by local merchants.
For example, you cannot find folks wearing Penn State gear these days. Somehow, that stuff has been put on the shelf.
That is only the beginning of the economic impact.
This sucks to high heaven, and could have been avoided.

Speaking in anecdotes, all I can say is that I've seen people buying Penn State stuff in the 717.

During the "dark years"...
I actually bought more PSU gear than usual just because I was weary of the Pgh media reveling in the Pitt-like seasons PSU was abnormally having. It was kind of my way of saying “F**k you, Ron Cook, et al! No matter what you and the rest of the hacks around here say and do I’ll still support PSU. In fact, I’m gonna support them even more just because of what you’re all trying to do!”
But I have to admit I haven’t done the same with this scandal (yet, anyway).
I just bought a bunch from Kohl's
Had a good selection of new things for the season.
My dad and I bought sweatshirts Nebraska weekend.
I made it up to my first home game in 2 years. I know others who’ve done the same. I think this economic impact tale is made up.
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

But one guy says nothing is being sold
He even pointed to hard numbers and sales figures.
How can this be made up, when it makes so much sense within the preconstructed narative that PSU will never recover from this? How?

Very good selection actually.
And prices are good.
Or off the shelf.
That’s what’s been ordered to be done with Paterno related PSU items.
