Wrestling Wreport: Penn State kills Lock Haven
There should be police tape across the entrance to Thomas Field house at Lock Haven University because Penn State murdered Lock Haven 50-0 for their 10th in a row against the Bald Eagles. In every team sport there comes times when all members of that team click at the same time and the team looks unbeatable, Sunday just happened to be one of those occasions for the Nittany Lions. Penn State got bonus points from 9 of the 10 weights, including 4 pins, 3 tech falls, and two major decisions. Not only were the Lions scoring at will but they didn't give much up winning the takedown battle 41-0.
| Wt | Winner | dec. | Loser | Bout Score | Team Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 125: | #15 Nico Megaludis PSU | pinned | Bobby Rehm LHU, | WBF (4:02) | 6-0 |
| 133: | Derek Reber PSU | dec. | John Trumbetti LHU, | 6-3 | 9-0 |
| 141: | Bryan Pearsall PSU | pinned | #14 Matt Bonson LHU, | WBF (4:22) | 15-0 |
| 149: | #1 Frank Molinaro PSU | pinned | Owen Wilkinson LHU, | WBF (2:30) | 21-0 |
| 157: | #10 Dylan Alton PSU | maj. dec. | Aaron Fry LHU, | 19-8 | 25-0 |
| 165: | #1 David Taylor PSU | tech fall | Seth Creasy LHU, | 21-5 (TF; 3:21) | 30-0 |
| 174: | Matt Brown PSU | tech fall | Aaron McKinney LHU, | 19-4 (TF; 3:47) | 35-0 |
| 184: | #5 Quentin Wright PSU | tech fall | Zach Heffner LHU, | 17-2 (TF; 7:00) | 40-0 |
| 197: | #10 Morgan McIntosh PSU | maj. dec. | Matt Parlier LHU, | 13-4 | 44-0 |
| 285: | #8 Cameron Wade PSU | pinned | Harry Turner LHU, | WBF (3:53) | 50-0 |
There's not much more this team could have done it was total domination. The biggest surprise was Pearsall's pin of Bonson, at the time of the pin Pearsall was winning 4-0 with solid riding time built up so it wasn't a fluke throw, Bryan was handling the ranked Bonson. Pearsall is wrestling in place of injured Sam Sherlock but Bryan may have wrestled himself into a position to challenge for the starting spot. Sanderson had this to say about Pearsall after the match:
Sanderson said he wanted to take both wrestlers to the team’s next event, the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Jan. 1-2, but couldn’t say for sure if Sherlock would be healthy enough by then. Sanderson did indicate, however, Pearsall has earned another shot to win the 141-pound starting spot full time.
"We can’t lose matches not hustling or not fighting," Sanderson said. "And you know Pearsall is going to fight the whole time, win or lose."

Poor Lock Haven
Feels weird for them to be this meh. Wow, Pearsall! Man, the Southern Scuffle is gonna be cool: that Sherlock / Pearsall battle is gonna be nuts. And can’t wait to see what shape Martellotti’s in.
Also, this Matt Brown is very intriguing. A 20y.o. RSFR (returned from Mormon mission). With him and Cowburn providing ‘depth’, the next couple years lineups at 165-197 are gonna be very interesting.

Brown
Yeah that Mormon mission thing gives him an advantage physically. Remember Sanshiro Abe? He was in his late 20’s (if memory serves me right) when he wrestled his 4 all-american years at Penn State. He was physically way more mature than anyone he wrestled.
I'm fascinated by the great backups
Ahh, yes, I had forgotten that Abe was older then. What was the reason?
Brown sounds like the real deal and yet cannot hold a candle to Ruth, two years his younger. Cowburn, too, sounds like a good one, but we can’t see him yet given our depth chart. Andrew Alton, we’re looking for big things from at 149 next year, but haven’t read any reports of him taking out Tank. With James English’s injury, we’ve been unable to see if he’s better than Dylan. Jordan Conaway & Nico Megaludis have the same experience in the Penn State room, and Nico’s heads and shoulders better, at this point. It’s the coolest aspect of the sport for me—that there’s always somebody better—but it’s even cooler when that’s all on the same team.

He was from Japan
and I believe he just waited to come to america for college? I’m not sure and Wiki can’t help me out for the first time in my life. He does have his own page though: http://www.abewrestling.com/
One of the most tenacious leg attack guys I’ve ever seen, couldn’t do crap on top but was like a cat in the neutral position.
I'm really excited for the scuffle
Hard to believe it’s been a year since the scuffle last year when the team really made a statement and put themselves in the conversation for a National title. Highlighted by Ruth beating two top 5 guys, maybe even top 3 at the time.
Also hard to believe Penn State was just 10 points off the maximum possible score. Really hope Robbie Waller can get that program headed back in the right direction at some point.
Indeed
On Intermat, Lewnes was #1 & Henrich was #2 at the time. Ruth was like #11-13 or something. Never got to meet Reader, who ran the table and was #3 at that time.

Honestly
At NCAAs last year I think Reader would have beaten Ruth last year. Kid was on a mission, would have been great to have seen them in the finals. Though I enjoyed watching Ruth beat Lewnes for 3rd on one leg. I was never a big fan of Lewnes something about him always rubbed me the wrong way.
Yea have to wonder if Sherlock still isn’t fully recovered from his knee. He’s been a tad disappointing so far. Of course he may also just not have fully grown into 141 yet. Sometimes takes guys awhile to adjust to stronger wrestlers.
But with Frank M. coming back at the scuffle and Pearsall stepping up at 141 it seems the lightweights are going to hopefully get a big boost going into the new year.
Pearsall seems to be adjusting to 141.
I don’t think he knew what he could do at the weight. His length can always be an advantage and he looked great on top against WVU, stupid coaching error…….
I just read.
a regular decision is by <=7 points (X dec. Y by score of 7 – 0). Worth 3 team points.
a major decision is >=8 points (x dec. Y by score of 9 – 1). Worth 4 team points (1 ‘bonus’).
If X tilts Y to his back for at least 2 consecutive seconds (but does not pin), AND has accrued >=15 point margin over Y, then X wins by technical fall and the match ends on the accumulation of the 15th margin point. Also known as a major ass whoppin’. Worth 5 team points (2 bonus).
X pins Y. Worth 6 team points.
If every wrestler pins his opponent, max team score in a dual meet is 60 – 0. Or in other words, the Lock Haven kids will be running and drilling until they puke for the next week or so, after getting smoked 0 – 50.
In a dual meet, an individual can send 0, 3, 4, 5 or 6 points to the team based on his performance
3 = Decision = individual win by 7pts or less. Example: Reber above, won 6-3.
4 = Major Decision = win by 8-14 points. Examples: Alton & McIntosh above
5 = Technical Fall = win by 15 points, match stops at this amount. Examples Taylor, Brown & Wright above
6 = Win by Fall (WBF), or ‘pin’ = stuck opponent’s back to the mat, ending the match. Examples Nico, Pearsall, Tank & Wade above.
Everything more than a DEC is called ‘bonus’ points.
Tournaments are different. The same scores in the individual match send different ‘bonus’ points to the Team Score:
2pts for a Fall/Pin, Forfeit, Default, Disqualification
1.5 pts for a TF if also scored individual nearfall pts (for exposing the back, but obs not a pin)
1 pt for TF w/no nearfall pts & for a Major Decision

There's also
the occasional one point team deduction for a coach or wrestler that loses their cool (like Iowa in the last 2 NCAA competitions.)

Just so I can talk about it with you guys here
This is from FOS poster RoarLions, a list of ranked wrestlers who are set to appear at the Scuffle, by weight. He’s using GAH’s Wrestling Report rankings, which have Quentin at #4 & Steinhaus at #8, for example (I’m also puzzled at his 149 rankings where Eiffert is #19 & Ness is #9, even tho I watched Eiffert man him up in the 3rd and get the win in their dual) . But which now include freshmen rankings (preseason they don’t, understandably) and which now also includes, as Bman noted, Pearsall at 27.

That’s a lot of good competition our guys could potentially see. I’m most interested in what Martellotti looks like at 133 (GAH has Reber unranked) to see how he might affect our tournament scoring in March, but Nico could get a fun rematch with Sanders; McIntosh & Alton have some good measuring sticks there. Tank & Taylor have more championship fodder. Ruth & Wade should have some nice challenges and Q likely will see either or both of Steinhaus & Bosak. Gonna add a lot of nice content to that New Year’s weekend.

I'm excited about the scuffle
I tried covering it pseudo-live last year on Linebacker-U, I may do something on BSD this year if you guys are interested.
Yes!
Very interested. We did a few livethreads here for wrestling last year. Usually just taking turns with whoever was available to provide updates. Wresfan, the lucky dog, was attending in Philly, so we lost one for nationals, but had some fun with them always.
Please do! Schedule sets up nicely; I’ll be around the house a lot that weekend.

The Little Dipper, just west of Chambersburg had
both scrapple and puddin on the menu for breakfast over the weekend. I’m not really a fan, I had the pancake (about a foot in diameter) with sausage gravy and 2 dippy eggs on top with coffee. $4.98
I just read.

You know what...
You’re right OlderBudweiser. The funny thing is I copy-paste’d that from the recap on the OFFICIAL Penn State website without checking it. I usually browse through several writeups when I do my recaps and combine but I usually get ALL my stats from PSU’s official site. This isn’t the first time they have been wrong.
Cliff Keen Tournament 12/2
Umm, speaking of tournaments, I’m not sure how I missed this, but Kellen Russell, Michigan’s returning national champ, who went undefeated in a loaded weight class last year, lost to Ohio State true freshman Hunter Stieber in the semis. Stieber lost to Oregon State’s Mangrum in the finals, but damn! And Ohio State won the team comp, which included Cornell (6th place), Nebraska (4th), Michigan (2nd) & Wyoming (3rd). Wow.

Yea but not entirely surprising given the way he wrestles. I was more surprised that McDonough lost this year. I mean Russell wants to wrestle a 1 – 2 point match everytime, that’s just asking for disaster.
Huntir Stieber is a wunderkind like Taylor,
just not on the same level.
Taylor doesn’t scale.

Yea Ohio State looks really tough this year. After a down year last year they’ve improved a lot this year. And they’re very young with 1 or 2 more good recruiting classes they could be back in contention with PSU, Minn and Iowa in a couple of years.
Good God, I'm out of shape

It’s downright hilarious the difference in personalities between Brands & Sanderson. I just love it. You may not be able to take intensity any quieter than Sanderson does it, and you’d be hard-pressed to take it any louder than Brands expresses it.

I love how, in regards to the “darting in our ankles from the edge” style of wrestling, he says, “It’s comin’. It’s comin’.” Then he stares off into the distance for a second like a high plains farmer during the Dust Bowl.

When he talks about McDonough's match
He doesn’t look at the reporter who asked the question. He looks straight ahead like he’s still (intensely!) seeing it in his mind because, thirty years from now, he’ll probably look back to that match like a war veteran.

I knew you had words
This is a great description I’d like to add to. Dude’s intensity is so visceral he visually looks like he’s time-traveling! In these pressers, he’s traveling so quickly & intently between the Past (his memory), the Future (his visualization of that wrestler’s next match) and the Present (his acknowledgment that there are actually people right here in front of him asking & listening to his answers), that we can actually watch it transpire.
It’s truly remarkable.
