This isn't a big rant or anything, just an expression of my angst. #$%&@+%& This is PENN STATE!! Yes, there's an on-going "scandal" involving a former assistant coach, recent turnover in the administration, blah, blah... But it's PENN STATE. I don't mean to diminish the tragedy of what occurred with Sandusky and all, but I do want to point out that I'm tired of hearing how PSU is "toxic" and how hard it should be to find a new coach. The U.S. news-digesting public has the attention span of a newly hatched fruit fly and with an unrelenting 24/7 news cycle we're already seeing the recent political battles, shoppers fighting over Air Jordans, and other greater and lesser news stories overtake the story in State College. Soon this story will receded in the public consciousness to, "Oh, yeah...I remember that," status as they (we) get distracted by the next shiny thing or a new bunch of dangling string.
What head coach wouldn't want the PSU job? Seriously. It's THE prominent program in the northeastern U.S. It plays in the B1G. It was the third biggest money-maker in college football last year, and that's with the stadium rarely filling to capacity. It has great facilities. It has a long winning tradition. An energetic coach with a decent track-record could do very, very well at Penn State with some effort on the recruiting trail and a solid stable of assistant coaches.
The only thing that should hold back the school from landing a top-flyte coach is their scrooge-like stinginess in pay. PSU has been spoiled by the paltry pay they've given to Paterno over the years and they think they can get away with a tithe-like salary and land a solid coach. Nay, I say. It's time to pony up and start paying a competitive salary given the amount of money the program brings into the school. Don't be "penny wise and pound foolish" so to speak. Oh, and that crap about it's in the middle of nowhere and the wife would not like it 'cause it's too far from shopping...BS I say! What wife wouldn't move to State College when her husband is landing a HC job with the status of PSU? If it's an issue then I say divorce her, take the job, and find a new, smarter wife because the one he has is a self-involved myopic idiot.
I read today on si.com that they are going after Peterson from Boise but that he's just not that into us. %^#&$&%* He should be leaping at the opportunity to coach at a school that has the potential to actually play for MNCs on a consistent basis with competent coaching, a smart system, and some energy in recruiting. Scandal be damned...PSU needs to stop pussy-footing around and tell the best coach in the search that they want him, that they want him to win, that they will pay him handsomely, that they will support him 100%, and land him!
It's Christmas and I want a shiny new Head Coach!
