Missing In Action: Quick Football Update
Tom Bradley and Penn State SID Jeff Nelson just announced that QB Paul Jones and DB Derrick Thomas did not travel with the team to Dallas due to academic reasons. WR Curtis Drake and WR Shawney Kersey (who is rumored to be transferring any day now) did not make the trip due to "personal reasons".
Carry on.

I don't think individually these are big losses for this game.
With the exception of Drake these players have had almost no impact this year.
That being said, I don’t think the team is going to be up for this game at all and will probably not play well. I hope I am wrong.
I’m starting to agree with your second point. They might be fine, but this coaching search is so devoid I imagine players and coaches alike are scenario playing all day instead of having the bearings to focus on what January looks like.

My problem with Munchak is this:
We already have a guy who’s better. I could maybe understand replacing Bradley with Petersen, but with a guy who has, as you said, zero experience recruiting and none of the other benefits PSU gets from Bradley? It just makes no sense.

First of all, let me say this: I think some are concerned by the fact that Bradley was “rejected” by three schools. Well, Temple didn’t hire him because a powerful booster wanted Addazio because boosters are often irrational. Pitt didn’t hire him because, presumably, Bradley is a Penn State guy and, also, Pitt is really stupid (See: Todd Graham). I don’t know why UConn didn’t hire him and, frankly, I don’t care. Maybe Bradley rejected them. I can’t make any judgments on that whole thing if I choose to maintain my criticism of those who criticized Paterno without any knowledge. This whole paragraph feels slightly logically inconsistent to me, but I think my speculation about Temple and Pitt is reasonable.
Bradley is known to be a great recruiter. Munchak has never recruited any high school player.
Bradley has done a superb job with Penn State’s defenses, and, in doing so, became Paterno’s most trusted assistant and earned invaluable experience for a head coach ala Paterno under Engle. Bradley will definitely maintain the ties to the past, which, I think, is something we would be foolish to discount (Goodbye, Mike Zordich, Joe Suhey, Mike Mauti, and others of your sort). Munchak, of course, played for Penn State, but he never coached there and I don’t know enough about him to know if he can keep the amount of loyalty that Bradley can probably command.
Bradley obviously has great leadership skills, a fact attested to by Paterno and many players. Munchak? I have no clue.
I know that Bradley has excelled with basically every job he’s had at Penn State. Munchak was a capable assistant (I presume; honestly, I have no real idea, but it seems logical that he would be a capable assistant if he got the head job) and, unlike Bradley, he has head coaching experience. That experience consists of one year with the Titans; he has an 8-7 record. In short, he’s not at all a proven head coach like Bradley.
We know that Bradley’s a very good coach. Do we know that about Munchak? I don’t think so.

Bradley has my vote
The open practice and press conference for the bowl game really bothered me. Especially the fact the media was reporting and essentially throwing in his face that his interview was a “courtesy” interview and that he wouldn’t get the job.
So I found his email address on the sports website and just sent him quick email letting him know as a fan and an alumni I really appreciated how he handled himself and took care of the team and the school during a difficult time. I let him know that he had my vote for him to get the job but if not he had a supporter and a fan no matter where he ends up.
I wasn’t expecting him to even read the email, but two hours later he replied. And not just with some generic auto reply. He wrote a nice personal message, saying that he should be thanking me and all fans and alumni who stood by the program without us there would be no reason for him to coach and no reason for the players to compete.
To me that’s a guy who gets it. He understands what Penn State is about. This isn’t a football factory it never has been it never will be. Tom Bradley is a guy who appreciates that like the stadium is video says they play for those who came before them, and they play for the Penn State family.(and no frankly I don’t give two shits if the media portrays us a family blinded by football, screw them we’re a family, and family sticks together) Bradley is a guy who will still hand write letters to players letting know he’s gonna come visit them AND is still young enough to do it.
Someone is gonna give him a chance to be head coach and will be rewarded. I just hope it’s us.

That the new HC will be an unpleasant surprise, like that Cutcliffe guy at Duke, or something of that vein…I agree with a couple of others here that it is hard to believe that Munchak just leaves the Titans after so long and after a fairly successful first year as an NFL HC.
Right now for me, it is hard to be positive about the process. I just hope if they don’t get a quality outside hire, they stick with Bradley, who has been my second choice (now first) all along.

re: an unpleasant surprise
IIRC, Chizik was an unpleasant surprise for most Auburn fans. I think there will be a vast number of Penn State fans/alumni who will be upset no matter who the coach is. I may be one of them, for a few hours or so.
Then, I will get over it and see what he can do for the school on and off the field. I’m hoping to be able to reserve my judgment of the next coach until AT LEAST 2013.

Well, Chizik may yet NOT be a good "coach" perse
He surrounded himself with a damn fine offensive mind and a decent D-coordinator, and Lord knows that whatever got Cam Newton to go there wasn’t legitimate.
So the only thing I’ve ever really given him credit for is making the right hires. And, to be fair, there’s definitely something to be said for that. But if he makes the wrong hires, you might end up getting Zook’d.
Chizik was an unpleasant surprise because Auburn fans didn’t realize they were hiring a guy whose program would be run by coordinators and, above all, cheating boosters. They probably shouldn’t have been shocked by this result because Auburn constantly cheats.

So Professor Gundlach looked at the player’s academic files, which led him to the discovery that many Auburn athletes were receiving high grades from the same professor for sociology and criminology courses that required no attendance and little work.

Kersey
Didn’t Kersey almost transfer last season? I guess the kid was never happy in Happy Valley for whatever reason. Can’t really blame him for wanting out now if he had thoughts of transferring last year.
It's a shame about Jones
Doesn’t sound like he got his grades up enough to play. Hopefully with one more good semester this spring he can get things in order for next year. Although time is running out for him.
Drake being out seems odd there were no charges filed in the fight with he and McGloin so curious what that’s about.
As for Kersey meh, seems like he could be a talented kid but he left the team in the middle of the year last year because he wanted to leave. You can’t please everyone.
Drake being out seems odd there were no charges filed in the fight with he and McGloin so curious what that’s about.
This is Drake’s 3rd or 4th brush with trouble. Feels like he’s always in or around some sort of physical altercation. At some point, someone needs to step in and tell him to grow up.
I’m sure McGloin didn’t help matters, but Drake needs to put his hands down.

From what I've read on the tweedle dee
It’s not related to the fight. The rumor, I mean message, boards are saying he’s telling people he needs to take a step back and take a break from everything. If that’s true and he plans on coming back in the Spring I applaud him would show a great sign of maturity to know when to step away and reevaluate everything.
I respectfully disagree.
Drake will have down time after the bowl game to reevaluate everything. This team, this program, this university needs to win this game BAD to staunch the flow of bad news and to give everybody something to feel good about. The bowl game is in less than a week.
His being on scholarship is his job. Just like when my wife and kids get on my nerves, or when work gets on my nerves, I don’t just get in my car and drive away to be by myself. I’m in the fight (just like Drake is) so you have to stay attached and muddle through (sometimes that’s exactly what it feels like) and press on. You can’t just walk away and leave people high and dry. Not when others are counting on you.
I'm with you on this one.
If this is the case with Drake, then guess what? Tough shit. That’s life. I do things every single day I don’t want to do. Taking a step back is another way of saying he is too weak to handle getting a free education in exchange for playing a game. If he can’t handle it, fine, get off the team and stop pilfering a scholarship that some other poor s.o.b. could use. Otherwise, h needs to hike up his skirt.

And I don’t plan to watch any part of any bowl game still to come except MAYBE the PSU game. But I’m even having doubts about that. I hate the bowl games and coupled with all that’s transpired this year I may just do the total bowl boycott.
(Maybe I just need to step away for a while like Drake!)
Whatever
Just ready for this season to be over so all the transfers and such can get out of the way and we can start over. I dont care how much we suck for the next couple years honestly I just want it to happen already so we can get it over with.
As long as none of those MIA are named Silas Redd, Devon Still, or Jack Crawford...
… Penn State is going to be just fine against Houston, and I do predict it will get ugly for Houston. All Penn State has to do is play a simple Cover-2 Man and let Still and Crawford pressure Keenum. These are by far the two most gifted defensive linemen Houston will have faced all year, and Crawford will be playing with a chip on his shoulder since many mock drafts don’t yet include him (which is probably why his play over the last three games – 8 tackles and 4 sacks in PSU’s toughest three game stretch – really turned up a notch).

A shame that Drake and Jones can't make it
I think Drake really added another dimension to the offense when they brought him into the game plan more.
Jones could have been an interesting addition if McGloin indeed can’t go, no one would know how to prepare for him.
Joe, the reason we shout "WE ARE" and the reason the answer will always be "PENN STATE"
It's a shame about Jones.
He was probably the best of the three QB’s. But Joe set the standard, and regardless of what Sandusky did and how everybody responded, it’s why WE ARE….PENN STATE!!! Bradley has shown that if he is in fact the successor, he’s going to maintain the no grades, no play philosophy that Joe rightfully instituted.
As far as Bradley being the next coach, I’m not 100% sure I’m on board. I’m sorry, there’s something that says this whole Sandusky mess will never, EVER die as long as there are any people left over from the staff. That being said, if this job is now so toxic that nobody wants it, Bradley may get it by default. If that’s the case and he keeps the standards in place that Joe set, if Bradley coaches with a little more courage and aggression in trying to win instead of coaching with fear and trying not to lose, and we do win, then good for Bradley. I don’t know. I’m not going to curse hiring him. I’m not going to curse not hiring him. Like a lot of things in life, we’ll have to wait it out. And that’s the hardest thing to do: wait.
Is he really the best of the three, or just better than the two we decided weren’t good enough because we don’t know anything about how well he can play?

Slightly off-topic.
Just got back in (at 8:30) from our 12-hour drive from NEPA to central North Carolina. Great to be back in the Commonwealth for the Christmas holidays.
Wife and I drove to State College on Friday to visit some friends — two highlights:
(1) Went by Joe’s house. Stood on sidewalk and wife took picture in front of house. No one home — could have been at Mass. House across the street has a sign in the window that faces the Paternos: “We are bleeding BLUE AND WHITE for you!” Classy!
(2) Met friends at State College mall, and wandered around while wife and her friend visited. Found Kozee’s, which sells lot of Penn State pictures. Met DC17!!!!! Got pic made with him, and he autographed a great pic for wife and me. (The one where he scored at Wisconsin, and the two Wisky players are slumped on the ground.) Talked with him for about ten minutes, and am impressed with his demeanor and love for Penn State. Said he had seen Joe a day or two before, and that Joe is doing “pretty well” with the treatments and all.
Will try to post a pic when we get them downloaded from the camera.
Hope everyone’s Christmas holiday was wonderful, in spite of the last eight weeks or so.

Paul Jones
Will never see a day on the field for PSU. He’ll flunk out.
Just an FYI from Jones's twitter
He was 1 credit short of playing in the fall, and .02 points from qualifying for the bowl game. I’d say that is far from flunking out.
Maybe, maybe not.
.02 from what standard?
And, as I tell folks who drop the “oh, s/he missed passing the bar exam by [small number of] points,” a proper student, recognizing the importance of the exam, GPA, whatever should never be in a position where a few points matter.

I only did a bunch of practice questions, so no, I didn't study.
A pandemic of cowardice sweeps the nation.
"The standard is the standard."
Now where have I heard that before???
Didn't he need a 2.0?
Being off by .02 gives him a 1.98, in his sophomore year. That doesn’t exactly say great things about his ability to pass junior and senior year. I hope it gets better but it’s not looking particularly great. Plus, a football player at an institution known for academics is short a credit? A QB nonetheless. He either fell through the cracks, which would be unlikely, or he hasn’t taken enough care to take advantage of the plethora of academic help there is to make sure he can meet at least the bare minimum requirements.
Joe, the reason we shout "WE ARE" and the reason the answer will always be "PENN STATE"
One thing to keep in mind...
His high school was (is) absolutely terrible academically. He would’ve been woefully ill-prepared for college.
His high school still is terrible
The fact that he has been able to stay in college at all is a testament to his desire. A lot of athletes struggle the first year or two as they catch up to their classmates. Once they develop proper study habits, catch up on some of the foundational skills that others learned in high school, they often do quite well in their final 2-4 years of college. This is particularly true given the amount and level of academic support that – at least while I was at PSU – are available to members of the football team. Football tutors had to prove themselves by working with non-revenue sport athletes before they were assigned to football players.

Agreed, it's ridiculous.
There is absolutely no excuse for a PSU football player to be academically ineligible with the resources available to them. PJ isn’t taking organic chemistry up there, either. And it’s not like he has to be worried about game prep or anything like that, he wasn’t even the 3rd team QB this season.
