Failure to intervene will rightfully haunt Penn State’s Mike McQueary
This Doc Bradley from the UNLV Rebel Yell logs an opinion piece that deserves some replies from some BSD readers I think. This guy has had almost a month to learn and consider. His failure to do so so is worthy of reply. Mike McQueary does not deserve this with what little we know.

I cannot say that Jerry Sandusky is guilty of the crime of which the grand jury has accused him. He deserves his day in court. I can however address the actions (or lack thereof) by McQueary.
Apparently if you are accused of a crime you deserve a presumption of innocence, but if you are not accused of a crime you deserve to be judged on incomplete information and then publicly accosted. Good to know.
That which we are, WE ARE...PENN STATE.
Forever.

It may seem a bit petty on my part to ask BSD readers to reply to this nobody
but he is obviously a journalism major who might benefit from being subjected to a valid train of thought early – before he might be in a position of influence.

I replied, mostly because I'm bored
I expect it to be deleted, but here’s a copy/paste:
“I have read the grand jury testimony”
- No, you haven’t. You have read what is referred to as a Grand Jury presentment, which contains little to no actual testimony and is instead a summary, carefully crafted by the prosecution, to set out enough evidence to bring charges without including too much information that would give the defense attorney something to exploit.
“I can however address the actions (or lack thereof) by McQueary.”
- Along the lines of what I said above…are you sure you can address these things? Do you know what McQueary saw or didn’t see? Do you know what he did or didn’t do? No…you know what someone in the PA Attorney General’s office decided to characterize in their summary.
“He states that when he entered the shower room to investigate, he witnessed former coach Jerry Sandusky sodomizing a young boy.”
- Does he now?
“Upon witnessing this crime against humanity, McQueary did not rush in to stop it or even shout out "What the hell are you doing you sick bastard?!" Instead, McQueary walked away.”
- Are you sure this is what happened? Are you sure he didn’t yell that or something else? Are you even sure that HE was sure that what he saw was a sexual assault? Are you sure Sandusky and/or the kid didn’t say “hey Mike, we’re just horsing around?” and grab towels and leave the area? No. You’re not.
You never heard or read a word of McQueary’s testimony. YOU READ A BARE BONES SUMMARY PREPARED BY THE PROSECUTOR FOR A JUDGE TO BRING CHARGES AGAINST A DEFENDANT. If he said or did anything, it wouldn’t have been included. So how do you know, then?
“According to his own words, he abandoned a child in distress at the hands of pure evil. He walked away from a situation he could have easily stopped, even with the simplest of actions.”
- Wait, so you actually heard McQueary’s words? With your insistence, I’m starting to think you may have. If so, I apologize.
No? Well then, you might want to steer away from claiming he said ANYTHING in his own words, or “walked away” from something that was “easily stopped”. You are a published writer. I’d like to think you know better.
The stuff you wrote about Penn State and cults, I’ll leave alone for the most part. Consider this charitable on my part, since it’s all pretty laughable. Consistent with pretty much everything else you wrote in the article, you clearly don’t really know what you’re talking about at all.
“I had no idea who he was until a month ago, and I loathe him. His life is ruined, and I believe justly so”
This is pretty strange… What if it turns out that he wasn’t sure what he saw or heard in the locker room? That he DID in fact stop whatever was happening? That he was confused because it wasn’t as black and white as it appears to everyone now, and he decided to still report it because he felt uncomfortable about it? What if he DID speak with police at some point before or after talking to Paterno and the school administrators?
You do realize that all of the above “ifs” are still in play, right? Because we don’t know what he said to the grand jury, only what they chose to summarize and include. Everything he said to the prosecution wasn’t included, let alone everything he’d say with a defense attorney asking him more specific questions. To take the summary as gospel belies a fundamental misunderstanding of what we’re dealing with.
Listen, I knew who McQueary was before last month, and I didn’t really like him that much. But I think that the fact that you’ve taken such a strong stance based solely on information that was pre-packaged and organized by someone with a clear agenda (the AG, whose aim is to bring charges against Sandusky and eventually get a conviction) is pretty ridiculous. I understand that you are not religious, but pretty much every religion or moral code has some sort of wisdom on the propriety of judging others on incomplete understanding. But hey man, stand in judgment if you think yourself fit. Do what you want.
You’ve had a month to follow the story and go beyond speculation and the parroting of irresponsible stories that came out 3 weeks ago. It’s disappointing that people are still writing this drivel.

I replied as well—but not nearly as articulate as you! You said everything I wanted to and more!

Nice comment
I didn’t even touch the Penn State = cult paragraph. I couldn’t have done it in a reasonable way. I know my limits.

Well played Sir
Octa, if he responds to you, please post it here. I would love to see what this donk write to try and respond to your well written counterargument.

Too bad the author failed miserably at getting the point
He posted the grand jury report and asked us to read it as if we hadn’t been telling him what it was?
It must be a media blindness issue?

Yeah
He has missed the point pretty badly. Made me feel bad for even criticizing him, actually. He has no idea what he’s talking about.

I think his point was to talk about what should be done in those situations
Unfortunately, he did a really bad job at illustrating it. And the juxtaposition of railing on McQueary while admitting he probably would do the same was just odd.
In other words—if he was trying to inspire other people to do the right thing, he did a poor job.
He has no idea what he’s talking about.
He has a lot of company among his journalistic brethren.

Probably the biggest evidence
that not all the details are included in the grand jury summary is the fact that Big Red’s name wasn’t even mentioned.
This guy is the worst.
He’s not taking responsibility for his own mistakes and instead trying to paint us all as “absolutists.” The irony has not been lost on me. My final response:
Doc, I think my first comment to this article says everything you need to know. You continually wrote that you’ve "read testimony" and you haven’t. That’s a blatant factual inaccuracy, and one on whose foundation you built the rest of your argument. If you can’t even admit that, you’re just not being very honest with yourself.
As far as your characterization of "Penn State" writ large, I hope you can one day understand the folly. I don’t judge you based on your school’s reverence of Jerry Tarkanian (having named the court after him), even though if we’re being honest, literally the ONLY good he ever did for anyone on that campus was win basketball games (mostly with players he recruited and maintained illegally). I don’t judge you or the entire university for worshipping a coach that literally brought NCAA punishments to the school and set the basketball program back 10 years though, because…why would I? That would be incredibly reactive and shallow.
And re: absolutism…the greatest irony is that none of us are arguing any sort of absolute. Summarized, our argument is "we don’t really know what the full story is, so we should exercise restraint." You, by drawing inferences and treating them as some sort of factual truth, are much closer to making "absolutist" arguments than anyone else. And I take little to no comfort knowing you’ve promised to write a retraction and apology if you’re wrong. Why make such strong statements in the first place if the possibility that they could be completely wrong is so high? I’d prefer you not punch me in the face at all rather than punch me in the face and then apologize profusely that "I thought you were someone else."

I should not have gone back to read his responses to the comments.
If that’s a PhD candidate in Religion & Politics, then ‘critical thought’ in this country is in more trouble than I previously believed.
This clown is not a PhD candidate -- or at least I highly doubt it.
To be a PhD candidate means that all doctoral coursework has been completed, you have passed qual/final exams, and are now permitted to write a dissertation. This guy sounds more like he might be a beginning Masters student. And in some of today’s programs they no longer require one to first earn an MA/MS, so he might be a PhD student who is the functional equivalent of a Masters student.

Jonathan Doc Bradley. Only took a few Google searches. Not that it has any bearing on his being PhD candidate or not.
Somewhere along the line he should have learned that the use of ad hominem arguments is not doctoral candidate worthy. Cultists, apologists, etc. Frankly, I’m not sure he’s all that bright, but that may be a bit harsh.
