Jeff Brooks update
It sounds like Jeff Brooks' injured shoulder may likely keep him out of Sunday's home game vs Michigan. Based on the article, it sounds like things could've been worse and that a possible return vs Michigan State in East Lansing is a likely target.

Hopefully the diagnosis is correct and he only has to miss one full game. The question is - can PSU beat Michigan without him? I'm very skeptical based on how they played against Illinois. Fatigue is one thing, but putting guys in extended roles that are not used to it could be a huge factor in the game. Michigan has been playing teams tough for most of the season.
This may have to be a Talor Battle "get on my back and I'll carry us to the win" type of games.

What concerns me is the outside defense.
Michigan’s offense is offensive in its simplicity.
Step 1: Drive to the basket
Step 2: Pass to the perimeter (Hence John Belein’s real name “John Three-line”)
Step 3: Shoot three pointer
Step 4: Rinse and repeat a MILLION FREAKING TIMES.
I have little confidence in our ability to stop this.

It will be raining 3's on Sunday for sure
The defense on Tuesday was truly awful. So many dunks and layups. Hopefully Michigan’s interest in shooting 3’s will play into our hands since we have lost our best shot blocker.
This is a tough call for Ed…do you roll the dice and play Brooks and risk aggravating the injury or hold him out ’til the road game at MSU? They HAVE to win one out of these next two, and getting swept by UM would just be terrible.
The bench players (Marshall really) seem to play better at home so maybe Ed can piece something together without Brooks. I think that is what i would do.

getting swept by UM would just be terrible.
That it would be, but it didn’t stop Tubby a year ago…Minnesota getting swept by Michigan, especially when Minesota was ranked, was hilarious.

I'm far more confident in Michigan's ability to stop itself.
"I don’t spend a lot of time dwelling on the negative. I believe that having a good, peaceful mind is the basic premise for a good life."
Rooting interests
I also think it is definitely time to root against the teams that will be in the same boat as us on the bubble. It may seem early but when teams get huge wins. that hurts our chances. We don’t need a Maryland or a St John’s or Northwestern getting hot and being the new favorite bubble team and pushing us down a notch or two.
Let's not underestimate gameplanning
Penn State clearly didn’t have a gameplan to deal with Brooks’ absence on the road in Champaign. There’s a difference between that and having days to gameplan for Michigan at home.
I think we’ll see a lot of three guard looks which might actually improve the perimeter defense marginally, which is priority No. 1 against Michigan.
I think PSU could be OK. Gotta bring the intensity this time, though.

Good point, that will help...
unfortunately they will still involve Kirkpatrick and Oliver playing more minutes than they should. We are gonna need an efficient game from Battle, and Jackson and Jones to play well. then either frazier or a bench player to add some points (preferably both).
If we play like we have been playing (outside of Illinois), even minus Brooks, we will have a good shot.
Gotta go 3 guard here.
This is a team we can afford to lose some size against based on their offensive scheme alone. Also, we just don’t have the personnel to play a standard 5 for the majority of the game without Brooks.
Liked what I saw out of Tim on Tuesday night. Battle’s gotta step it up again now. I know it’s unfair, but it’s the way it is.

Agree
Besides, Michigan’s inside game makes the PSU front court look like Hakeem and Shaq. The keys to beating Michigan:
1. Guard the perimeter
2. Don’t royally lay an egg
Even without Brooks, this is a game PSU should win.

That Michigan loss in the first week of the Big Ten looms pretty large right now.

It's amazing
But your first sentence really isn’t much of an exaggeration.

Storybook type stuff
the team is playing what is by far the most meaningful game of the season to date (at least in terms of how much it will alter PSU’s NCAA tournament chances) and has to do it without the team’s most efficient scorer and probably best defensive player. A win without Brooks would mean PSU is for real, a loss probably means the NIT.

Can't they just staple his arm back in the socket?
How about crazy glue?
Don’t they have any pain killers in their little black bags?
Does he really need both arms to play?

Billy Oliver 3's or a one-armed Brooks?
You make the call.

Brooks.
Can’t go as well as Cornley, who functionally played with one arm during the NIT (His one arm baby hooks were simply awesome), but can’t go too poorly.

Has to be under. Just has to be.
Sometimes he makes a big play and it’s like, “Nice Billy!” And then 10 seconds later I’m screaming at the TV again.

Oliver is a freshman that hasn't played in two years
yes, its his third year in the program, but he hasn’t played since his senior yr in high school. He has a nice shooting stroke and is getting better on D and rebounding. He will be a solid player in a year or two. This is very much an over exageration. There are not any 6’9" guys playing IM ball with close to the skills of Oliver, not close.

He’ll get there, you just have to believe.

Over/Under 1.5
Number of teams who think they are on the NCAA tournament bubble yet can accurately describe their sixth man (on a 6 man team), whose Big Ten averages are 1.8 ppg/1.4 rpg, as “He has a nice shooting stroke and is getting better on D and rebounding. He will be a solid player in a year or two”.
Thank goodness when this season ends on/or before March 11th we’ll have the excitement of the 2012-2013 season to look forward to!
how many of those have teams have a first team all conference guard and 3 other seniors starting?

Over/Under 1
Number of people who think rooting for two different Big Ten teams makes you look like a really shallow fair weather troll who frankly no one cares about?

And for the record, I’m a Penn State fan. I have degrees from both schools and thus the username.
While I’m not a Badger basketball fan, it’s very easy to admire what Bo Ryan does year-in and year-out. He recruits for his defensive-minded, high shooting percentage system, thus despite classes that rank low nationally his teams compete for a Big Ten title every year.
But who would want that out of their basketball program? Its much more fun earning 1 NIT birth a decade.

So there's not going to be a 2011-2012 college basketball season? Interesting...

There will be a season...
But if you look at the roster its pretty clear it’ll be another last place Big 10 finish for the Ed Heads.
Thankfully it is a season for Billy Oliver to continue to develop. Good things, good things.
