Sigh

back to cheering for the Big Ten and against the Big East.

At least the first round went well for the league: 5 wins that were never in doubt after halftime and 2 losses by a combined 4 points.

The Big Ten is now 5-2 (.714 win%), the Big East is 7-4 (.636 win%). 45.5% of the Big Ten’s membership is in the round of 32, while 43.8% of the Big East’s membership can say the same.

None of that takes into account the fact that the bottom 1/3 of the Big Ten is worlds better than the bottom 1/3 of the Big East in every computer known to man.

Somewhere, Ken Pomeroy is feeling vindicated for saying that the Big Ten is and has been by far the best league all year. Pat Forde would feel stupid if he were smart enough to understand any of this.

Michigan doesn't have a prayer against Duke

and Illinois chances aren’t much better. OSU will win, I think Purdue will handle VCU, and Wisc-KSU is a toss up.

I don't know about Michigan-Duke

If a 1 seed is to lose this weekend, Duke seems like the most likely candidate: they are by far the weakest 1 seed, and they appear to have the toughest opponent of any 1. Not only that, but Michigan played 3 very, very close games against OSU and Kansas, the two teams that both RPI and Real Record says are the best in the tournament. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a close game or even an upset.

And after further review

The Big East is guaranteed two spots in the Sweet 16 with Marquette-Syr. and UConn-Cincy games in this round.

The other thing about the Big East

is that it’s hard to tell how good a team is because they don’t come close to playing round robin home & home schedule. For example with Ohio St. you see them play a close game with us in January, then a blowout in the second meeting. That gives you some insight that you don’t necessarily get with a Big East team.

This is why

I view the Big East Tournament Champion as the champ and don’t give a crap about who wins the “regular season championship.” The inverse is mostly true for the Big Ten, even if there are still sometimes there are incredibly uneven discrepancies in scheduling (compare PSU’s one-timers: #11 Indiana and #10 Iowa, with Michigan’s: #2 Purdue and #4t Illinois).

VCU was an interesting one all along

and evidence that the combination of conference standing and conference RPI meant little to nothing to the committee this year. On one hand, they were the 4th best team in the 10th best league. That team almost always should not, and generally does not, get in.

The counter argument to that: Real Record says VCU (29-7) clearly had a better resume than Harvard (17-4), Va Tech (25-8), Alabama (22-11, why did anyone imagine this was a bubble team?!), Boston College (24-8), or Colorado (27-9). Leaving out VCU in favor of one of those teams would have been unfair.

Since it's my go-to sport after the Icers' season is over

It’s a big day for Penn State gymnastics today as well. The women are at Minnesota for the Big Ten Championship meet, as the ladies look to win their first Big Ten championship and put a hold on Michigan’s dominance over the conference. It should be an interesting meet overall, as at least 5 of the 7 teams all have a serious shot at winning the title this year (#9 Michigan, #10 Penn State, #14 Iowa, #15 Ohio State, #16 Illinois). Meet starts at 3:15, and live results should be found here.

The men are at Oklahoma today as part of a tri-meet with OU and Illinois. All three teams at the meet are big hitters, as OU is ranked #2, Illinois is #4, and Penn State is #5. It will be a great test for the Nittany Lions leading up to the Big Ten’s (4/1 and 4/2) and Nationals (4/14-4/16) coming up in April. The meet tonight starts at 8pm and live results should be here.

Update from the Womens Gymnastics Big Ten's in Minny

After 3 rotations:

Penn State – 98.300
Ohio State – 98.025
Michigan – 97.975
Iowa – 97.400
Michigan State – 97.000
Minnesota – 49.200
Illinois – 48.525

Still need Minnesota and Illinois to do their second event, but Illinois is all but out at this point. Teams are going to need to score at least 49.000 on each event to have a chance to stay pace with Penn State and Michigan. So MSU and Iowa are likely out, too.

Bad news for Penn State – we will be complete done and on a bye for the final rotation, while Michigan will be on the potentially-high scoring floor exercise to close the meet. I never like to be done and waiting to see if another team will pass you or not.

Good news for Penn State – Michigan made two huge mistakes on the Uneven Bars, completely opening the door for Penn State to take charge of the meet. It’s basically a three team race between PSU, UM, and OSU, with Minny still having an opportunity depending on how they do in their next two rotations.

Don't have BTN

(well, I’m sans cable TV, but that’s neither here nor there)

So I’m following along with the online updates. I became a fan with the 1996 Olympics and I’m just always amazed by the abilities by the gymnasts.

Penn State and Ohio State on break for rotation 5

and then both have their final events rotation 6. Ohio State will be on beam (which everybody has seemingly struggled with today) and Penn State will be on the potentially-high scoring floor exercise. Barring a major push from Minny or Illinois, the championship will come down to PSU, OSU, and UM. UM is on the Beam this rotation, and then will finish on the floor after PSU and OSU are both done.

Gus, don't be a gooey chocolate chip cookie.

by IcersGuy on Mar 19, 2011 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

This is going to kill me

Going into their final rotations:

Michigan – 147.075
Penn State – 147.050
Ohio State – 146.900
Minnesota – 146.850
Illinois still has two rotations left, but their 48.525 on beam is killing them.

Penn State (FX) and Ohio State (BB) finish during this 6th rotation; Michigan (FX) and Minny (BB) finish on the 7th rotation. This could very well come down to hundredths of a point to determine the champion.

by IcersGuy on Mar 19, 2011 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

FWIW

Floor usually has a higher scoring potential than the beam. Yes, both have the same total possible score (10.0 for 5 gymnasts, a max event total of 50.0), but it’s a bit easier to get higher scores on the floor than on the beam. That’s mostly because it’s easier to make mistakes (and as a result, get more score deductions) on the beam than on the floor.

Gus, don't be a gooey chocolate chip cookie.

by IcersGuy on Mar 19, 2011 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Ohio State falters on beam twice, eliminating them from the race

Penn State’s Whit Bencsko had a disappointing end to a great season, but the rest of the team has picked it up. Maddie Merriam puts up a big 9.925 and it’s up to the #1 All-Around gymnast in the nation in Sharaya Musser to finish it out for the Nittany Lions.

Also, Illinois still trying to make a late push, but they’ll have to be perfect on the uneven bars to really have a shot.

Gus, don't be a gooey chocolate chip cookie.

by IcersGuy on Mar 19, 2011 5:35 PM EDT reply actions

And it's a 9.9 for Shay

Penn State finishes with a total team score of 196.375. Here’s what the other teams need to tie Penn State in their final rotation:

Michigan – 49.300 (need to average 9.875 on the floor, hard but possible)
Illinois – 49.500 (need to average 9.9 on uneven bars, highly unlikely)
Minny – 49.525 (need to average better than 9.9 on balance beam, highly unlikely)

More info on Michigan

They averaged 49.175 on the floor exercise, with their season high score being 49.425.

by IcersGuy on Mar 19, 2011 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I knew Michigan having the floor last would be the deciding factor

Unless a gymnast screws up, the judges always like to inflate the scores of the team finishing on floor. That’s not to say that Michigan didn’t deserve to win, but their higher scores were just predictable. So it goes.

Final:

Michigan – 196.600
Penn State – 196.375

Sharaya Musser wins the all around with a 39.475; Madison Merriam finishes in a tie for second. Sharaya also wins the vault championship (9.900, tied with Amber See of Illinois). And Natalie Ettl wins the uneven bars championship (9.925). Great effort all around from the ladies, and some great individual efforts as well. Focus now shifts to the NCAA qualifiers and then hopefully on to the Super Six.

It was a tough loss for us on Thursday,

as an underdog, without title expectations. I can’t even imagine how Pitt fans feel, but I know my Pitt friends are strangely silent…

I don't know why Pitt fans would be surprised

In spite of Pitt’s ongoing streak of NCAA tournament appearances, usually with a decent seed, Pitt has one elite 8 appearance (same as basketball powerhouses Kent State, Alabama, and George Mason, and fewer than Oregon) and zero Final Four appearances in the last decade. Woefully under performing in the NCAA Tournament might as well be called getting Panthered.
