I will admit, I haven't really been that interested in wrestling until this year, so consider my opinion to be that of a very novice wrestling fan, but with that said:
Does anyone understand why wrestling doesn't go to some sort of championship match or playoff to determine the national team championship? Wrestling has always been a second tier sport in this country, for a variety of reasons, plenty of which aren't the way the team championship is decided. I understand that this is a predominantly an individual sport, but that may be what is causing it to go on the back burner. I appreciate the tradition and everything of the national tournament, but why not do a +1 system, where the top two teams at nationals go at it for the championship. Maybe its held at a neutral site, maybe its at the top finishers home arena, that would have to be worked out. However, I can almost guarantee such a match would be picked up by espn or ABC, and would do a lot for college wrestling.
For those who aren't aware, the national championship is currently decided how the big ten is, in that individuals accumulate points for their team, and whoever has the most at the end of the week wins it.
