Men's Volleyball Vs. Ohio State Open Thread
In case you missed it, the men's volleyball team won the EIVA for the 13th consecutive time last week, beating Springfield in the championship game to earn a spot in the NCAA Final Four, which begins tonight at Rec Hall. Penn State will take on Ohio State in the second game at roughly 9:00 P.M. with a spot in the NCAA title game on the line. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com
The Nittany Lions split their two regular season matchups with the Buckeyes, falling 3-0 in Columbus on Feb. 9 before earning a 3-1 victory against their rivals on April 10.
The men's volleyball rivalry between these two schools as every bit as heated as the football one if not more so. Since, Ohio State has been one of the few teams over the years to prove it can hang with Penn State, the animosity has obviously grown over time and with so much on the line this evening, you can bet it will be a heated contest.
Use this as your open thread to discuss the action and check back later this evening for a recap.

It always seems like Ohio State gets to the semifinals only to get blown out, usually by Pepperdine or some other Cali school. Hopefully this is the year.
Ann Arbor is a trollop.
Ohio State is always in the semifinals for the same reason that Penn State is always in the semifinals.
Their divisions suck ass. The mountain/pacific division is easily the best, which is why it almost always gets the at-large bid.
But fugi’s right in that this will be a battle. Playing in Rec Hall has to give the edge to the Lions.

UCSB looked fantastic in the 1st semifinal.
Did not think they would beat #1 USC again, but they crushed.
Yea I can't believe penn state beat them earlier this year.
I have a feeling they’re a much better team now then they were then.
Also what a choke job by the national player of the year.
No way
I bet Goas pulls a lot of trim.

How does everyone feel about Karch?
Is he a respectable Herbstreit type or a ridiculous Desmond type?

He can get annoying at times.
But the dude clearly knows his stuff. I will say he gets really into the game so sometimes it seems like he’s rooting for one team or the other but he’s fair.
What he said.
Definitely legit.

This is the kind of debate I was hoping to provoke.
I also just wanted to type “Karch.”

The ohio state block is dominating this game right now
Not looking good early. Long way too go though. Penn State looks a bit tight which is understandable playing at home.
Still broadcasting those back row attacks.
Need to bring the quick sets.
Also, I surprised by the number of serving errors here.
Yea I think they need to work the middle more
to reliant on the outside hitters.
This is the first time I've actually got to watch
But I know they had a lot of rotation at outside hitter earlier in the year. Trying to find something that works.
Is going under the net not a foul anymore? it looked like the middle hitter did on that last rally.
Ann Arbor is a trollop.
when I payed club ball under USAV rules
you could cross the line as long as you didn’t touch anyone and there was no gap on the opponent’s side between your foot and the line.
Ouch set one was not pretty
Better make some adjustments.
I can't believe gary williams retired
Sadly now when I see a coach retire suddenly I feel like a major NCAA infraction will soon follow.
He retired?
Thank God. I hate that visage.

I'm less nervous about these matches than I am for the women.
Expectations, maybe? Weird feeling.

I agree completely
in my case, it’s a streak thing—we have to win the NCAAs for women, because we have so many years in a row.

I don't know anything about volleyball,

these last 3 points given up were killer
really need to put this away
Minus the last point
Kind of a crappy way to win. But at this point I’ll take it.
For sure. Take what you can get at this stage.

If the setter was in the front row like I thought, I'm punching a kitten.

No cable.
I get ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS and PBS, with some substations for each, and up until a couple months ago no ABC.

theres nothing wrong with country cable
"Stats from the spring," he said when handed the numbers. "I can take those down to the spare bathroom in the house. We can put them to use down there."

Wow.
We are going to have to do better than that to win this thing. But its nice to get that set even when we are a bit off our game.
WE'RE DANCIN!!!
Wow.
Can’t miss that hit after that nice dig.

Meh
Wasn’t impressed by either team. OSU blocked better. That was the difference.

Congrats on a good season.
Team’s young. We’ve been spoiled with the women’s team, who can be very young and still win a NC.
Well, that's unfortunate, but good season, get 'em next year.
Congratulations to Ohio State.

Sorry I missed the open thread,
Thanks for putting it up. I was out til 11, watched a bit of the match when I could but it was apparent that we were overmatched last night.. The Lions put up a good fight.
I am probably one of the few (only) people on this site who saw Karch play (live)in college. He was head and shoulders above anybody else. He played four years at UCLA and they won 3 National Championships and one runners-up. I saw the finals when USC beat them at Ball State Ubiversity in 1980. The power those guys hit with was unbelievable. How they dig those spikes and power serves is beyond me!
The four teams in 1980 were USC,UCLA, Pepperdine and , get this, Rutgers-Newark (?). As Junny said, the West has always dominated but certainly the Eastern teams now are pretty strong. In those days, Ohio State and Ball State were the big guns in the mid-West. Penn State was pretty good, but obviously not better than Rutgers-Newark in 1980.
People will always forget what you do, and they will always forget what you say, but they will never, ever forget the way you make them feel.
