Penn State on Apple TV?

Finally took the plunge and cut the cable service and got an Apple TV.  We never watch TV except for streaming Netflix and watching PSU games, so CFB is the only major loss.  I am wondring if anyone has had any success in watching live or even day-old Penn State games using iTunes/Apple TV?  After doing some research online, I am kinda getting the idea that game days are going to be spent at the neighbors house, as it seems I'm SOL on this one without cable. Anyone have any tips or suggestions?  I'm perfectly willing to pay to see the games or get an online CFB subscription, but I imagine that does not exist.  Thanks for your help, all!  Oh, and here's a poll for you:

From personal experience

You can find ways to still watch live sports without cable. You lose quantity (I don’t watch as much as I used to), but if there’s something you want to watch, there’s a way to watch it.

Thanks,

So, what are “the ways” to watch PSU games without cable?

by chakey on Jun 10, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Go to a sports bar.

This is BSD, the crazy stirs itself.

I HATE going to a bar to watch the PSU games.

Never sound, not enough attention paid to the game too much other monkey business going on.

I’m sorry, but blanket statements are proven false 99% of the time, and if you make a blanket statement about college football, there’s a good chance that one exception will be Joe Paterno. - AdamShell @ BSD

I wasn't saying it was the best option,

but it is an option.

No worries,

I’m just generally complaining. I’m a bit less-sensored than usual today due to lack of sleep.

Didn't have to cross that bridge

I shut off my cable post-Super Bowl this past year. If I decide to continue to follow the cable-less route come the Fall, I’ll let you know.

I only keep Direct TV...

for the Big Ten Network. It’s the only way I can get it. That being said, I’m not giving up the other channels simply because I’m a dork that watches Track & Field, Triathlons, and a few actual TV shows as well.

From all the other responses, I'm a bit different

<3 TV. I don’t sit around and watch it 24/7 (usually when I’m on here I’m watching TV) but there are many good shows. To me at least

I wouldn't cut cable

for lack of shows to watch, but for lack of time available to watch. When I DVR’d all my TV’s I thought I hit pay dirt being able to skip all the commercials/watch what I want when I want, but I don’t even find the time to watch 1 show/week many times.

Since my payment to my cable company (TV/Highest Internet/3 Phone Lines) is 2nd only to my Mortgage, I really wouldn’t mind seeing it go away. Damn you sports addiction [shakes fist]

Right there with you brother

I’m bleeding coin to these rapists and liking it apparently, as I continue to be too lazy to get new hardware for the purpose of:
- returning my 4 rented cable boxes (1DVR & 3 watch in other rooms)($30/mo for the DVR, $10 for each add’l box)
- returning to netflix for $8/mo, instead of renting a single flick on-demand for nearly the same price
- canceling stupid movie packages which air movies I’ve seen a thousand times or only would watch with a huge buzz on when I should be sleeping ($30/mo)

I watch probably around two weeks worth of sports over the course of the year.

Add in a couple of movies on TCM, the occasional Cops episode, and Point Break whenever it comes on, and that’s it. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything.

me too!

Penn State football was the reason my family got cable when I was a kid, so, really, you can blame JoePa for my tv addiction.

Its a tough call....

I don’t think you will see direct-to-AppleTV sports subscriptions just yet. The networks and cable companies stand to make a lot of money by collaborating to deliver you that content exclusively. Now keep in mind, sometimes you can use ESPN3 to watch games on the internet but that requires a) game be on ESPN family of networks and b) you have an existing cable subscription (which you don’t anymore).

I’m very much in the “I only want to pay for what I watch” camp, but they don’t want us doing that right now.

This is sort of similar to the iTunes/record label thing, which is incredible, because now you can buy individual songs instead of paying $20 bucks for an album with 9 crappy songs and 1 good song. Hopefully, a similar revolution with cable is not far behind.

Last year Wired Magazine

ran a pretty comprehensive article about online TV. They came out and said pretty much anything you want you can get online – except sports.

Don't forget your local channels...

I cut the cable for the same reason: all I need/have time to watch is Netflix and Roku. I use a Roku vs. Apple TV, but either way works. One thing to note, if you live near any major city, you can get your local channels in beautiful, crystal clear HD with a pair of rabbit ears if you have a newer tv (and on any TV if you get a digital converter). I swear the HD quality is better than what I was getting with cable and this is with a $14 antennea from Best Buy. So that covers any sporting event on ABC, NBS, and CBS. Still a$$ out on the four letter and the BTN, but I go to the home PSU games and am hoping that at some point the BTN has to roll out some sort of online package (similar to MLB.TV), so we will be able to catch all the away action.

Slinbox?

What about a Slingbox attached to someone else’s cable? Anyone have any luck with that?

by chakey on Jun 11, 2011 8:24 AM EDT reply actions

I've looked into it..

be the logistics weren’t possible in my case, but if you’ve got the bandwidth it will cerainly work – just don’t expect HD.

Since I don’t get the BTN in Virginia (Cox Communications), I’ve been conniving a way to get it without switching to Direct TV. My brother in law has comcast x-whatever and it is available online. I’m going to do a trial and see if I can log into his account to view BTN online through his comcast. I’ll let you know the results.

Had one in 2004...

loved it.

Then they “updated” their hardware and software since then. I also got a new phone. It was great for watching baseball (slow motion picture, mostly audio play by play) on my phone across the country. Now my phone wont work with the old unit. The PC still works, but it wasn’t my true goal. Non subscription tv of whatever I damn well wanted to watch on my phone was the goal.

Before though you could plug a coax cable into the box a network cable out to the network and it would be a SD cable tv via computer for a one time fee of $200. Now with their “updates” the only model that has that capability is the uber fancy model for something like $350. The cheaper ones merely translate a RCA, Composite or s-video signal into a network viewable media. No tuner so you’d need another cable box (additional $5-$15/mo depending on your “suppliers” cable company) in addition to the cheaper (still $200) slingbox.

All in all I’ve soured on the slingbox option a bit since 2004. Technologically though it was great if you were willing to pay for it. Naturally don’t expect HD or anything.

I just go to atdhenet.tv

and open every game in a different window. I’m able to watch them all at the same time, while only having the volume up for the game I’m interested in.
