Derek Dowrey Commits To Penn State
The Penn State coaching staff picked up its first verbal of the summer on Saturday when Class of 2012 defensive tackle prospect Derek Dowery of Winchester, Va. committed to the Nittany Lions according to Blue White Illustrated.
Dowery, owner of a 6'3" 279-pound frame, is a bit if an unknown at this point, as none of the major recruiting services have him ranked. Of course, that could just mean they haven't gotten around to evaluating him yet, but nevertheless, he's an enigma for now. We do know he had offers from Marshall, Richmond, East Carolina and West Virginia in addition to receiving interest from Virginia Tech.
We also know he's been high on Penn State for a while and has taken several visits.
"I went to the Michigan and Northwestern games during the season," Dowrey said. "It was really awesome, I loved everything outside the stadium before the games, and I loved the atmosphere inside the stadium. It was just like nothing I have ever been to."
When asked if he had a favorite, the answer was crystal clear.
"Penn State by far," Dowrey chuckled. "I love everything about Penn State."
Seems like the coaching staff has known it had this one in the bag for a while. As of this posting, his Rivals page does not show an offer from Penn State, meaning the staff probably decided to pull the trigger after seeing something it liked at camp this weekend.
Dowery had 11 sacks and 145 tackles as a junior at John Handley. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any highlight tapes out there on the Internet for him, so you're going to have to use your imagination.

Way to be classy
The Kid is in love with Penn State, and LJ and friends like what they see? I’m sold.
I hear the stars over Notre Dame are always big and bright, perhaps you should take your telescope there.
Not trying to be a hater (ok maybe I am) but imagine working your butt off to be noticed by the coaches of your dream school, to get your offer, excitedly say yes, and then instantly be called a bum on the fan forums. That kind of classless act has no place being associated with my alma mater. So I will call it out every time.

Um, maybe find a way to express doubt without calling the kid a bum?

Excuse me?
He has an offer from Virginia Tech. He’s obviously Elite.

Yeah he's obviously terrible
I mean damn, we have 3 years of high school data to back that up. Thanks for you input, oh recruiting guru!

Gosh, rumple!
Good one!
I look forward to your future comments on any and all subject matter; the depth of your thinking on this comment alone indicates – to me, anyway – your standing as an intellectual behemoth.
Please – don’t be a stranger!

I can’t wait for Saturday football at Beaver Stadium. I’m starting to get a little antsy.

Welcome to Penn State!
I hope you end up loving it as much as we do, and you graduate with a 3.8 and a lot of great memories. Try to avoid Jenn Brown. I don’t think she’d be the best influence.

Jenn Brown will (sadly) be leaving us this year before he gets to campus
As she will be Jenn Brown (Senior, Economics).
Or did she already graduate? I can’t remember.

I honestly lost track.
I think you’re right, she’ll be (Senior, Economics) as of the fall. I imagine she’ll leave behind a protege to continue her work.

Welcome
The coaches see potential in you so keep working hard and be smart and good things will happen.
