Austin Johnson Commits To Penn State
Moments after news of Virginia defensive tackle prospect Dustin Dowrey's commitment to Penn State broke, it was reported by Lions247.com's Sean Fitz that fellow defensive tackle Austin Johnson out of New Jersey will join Dowrey in Penn State's Class of 2012 after accepting an offer from the Nittany Lions over the weekend.
The 6'4" 276-pound prospect, like Dowrey, is unranked by the major recruiting services, but claims to have had offers from Boston College, Rugers and Syracuse among others. Johnson hails from Richland, New Jersey and attends St. Augustine. He also thinks highly of Penn State.
"I've just been going to a lot of camps lately, and Penn State was my dream school," he said. " Once they put [the offer] out there, actually they had no idea I was coming to camp but I was supposed to contact a coach but I didn't. They offered me and I took it the day of, I knew that's where I wanted to go. It's my dream school. I love it."
So, for those of you keeping score at home, that's two off-the-radar guys in one night at the same position. I'm sure the recruiting geeks have an explanation for this, so I'll leave it to them. You know I just run the night shift on this stuff.

Between these two offers and the Chris Muller saga, a mystifying week on the recruiting front.
Congrats to the kids and whatnot, but we could’ve stolen them from Richmond and East Carolina in January, too.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
While, yeah it seems like these kids had their hearts set on PSU, we could have offered whenever. But, imagine in January if they commit somewhere else, and end up as 3 or 4 stars when the recruiting services catch up with them. We’d just hear endless nonsense about how we had them in camp and couldn’t land them when we were their top school.
The world is moving too fast for silly second guessing at this point. As for Muller…well anyone that thinks Rutgers will win a National Championship under Schiano instantly loses any credibility in my book.

The Muller piece is especially confusing.
There’s a story out there that he wanted to play LT and we were recruiting him only at guard. Fine if that’s the truth, but it seems silly given the amount of position changes that occur in the early stages of a player’s career on the OL.
He gave a quote the other day saying that Rutgers felt more like a family and at PSU he thought he’d be treated as a cog in the machine. I found that surprising, given the number of kids who walk away from their officials here and rave about the family atmosphere. But it is what it is. From what I gather, the coaches told Muller to commit sooner rather than later because they had several OL spots that were about to be taken and they didn’t have room for everyone. Maybe he didn’t like being told that he was replaceable?

The whole thing was weird.
Essentially, it was two spots for three guys, so — Muller, Bars, and O’Connor. So now let’s see if we get Bars and O’Connor.

I would be very surprised too
I mean, even if we get just 1 out of Bars/O’Connor, that still gives us three highly ranked OT’s the past 2 recruiting cycles. It would be disappointing, but not killer imo

I don't care what they told Gaia, that kid's getting moved to the offensive line.
Especially if we only get one of Bars/O’Connor.

And honestly, the interior line needs it more anyways.

I'm willing to let them take a swing at this one, especially now.
If these kids got offers in January, they would be guys that would merely be filling out a class after we struck out on kids that we really wanted. Here, it sounds like the staff saw these guys in person and knew a bit about them previously, then liked them enough to offer.
The usual suspects have already lost their minds about this, so they’ll either be proven right or the staff will. For what it’s worth, I’d be on Larry Johnson as a talent scout (although maybe not as a great judge of character).

Dude, I don’t know how you do it – especially on such a consistent basis.
I’m now to the point that my very first morning activity (well – aside from taking a leak) is to boot up old BSD and search longingly for your next bit of contributed wisdom. You never disappoint!
I thank you.

Audibles was already having a field day with this.
This could be a case of jumping the gun, or, the recruiting sites will check these guys out in a few months and rate them to be solid.
Congrats to the 2 young men, oh, and Eff the recruiting services.

If Larry likes these kids enough to be on his d-line, than that is all I need.

Fair enough
But peruse through the Scout rankings. Here are most of our d-lineman from the past several years:
Alford (3 star with offers from Miami, Syracuse, Virginia, Rutgers)
Hali (4 star)
Gaines (3 star with offers from Mich State, Wisconsin, Purdue)
Hayes (4 star)
Baker (3 star with offers from Cuse and Wisconsin)
Taylor (4 stars)
Evans (4 stars)
Odrick (4 stars)
Maybin (4 stars)
Still (4 stars)
Latham (3 stars with offers from UNC, Georgia Tech, Cal, Oregon)
Crawford (4 stars)
Hill (3 stars)
Stanley (3 stars with offers from Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Va Tech)
Ogbu was 2 stars and had an offer from UNC. Koroma and Ware had similar offer sheets to these guys who comitted yesterday. Ware wasn’t offered until January.
It’s not like LJ has made due with under the radar guys. He’s had highly-recruited, highly ranked kids with big time offer sheets. The 3 first round picks (4 if you count Taylor) were all 4 star recruits.
Eventually, yes
Remember, there are several camps left, schools aren’t even allowed to formally offer, and these kids haven’t played their Senior years. These guys may also get star upgrades (as several of the guys listed above did) before it’s all said and done.

Good enough for LJ, good enough for me
I’d be willing to bet good money that these kids both end up with at least 3 stars once they’re evaluated. The fact that they have no stars now doesn’t mean they don’t play football well… it just means they didn’t play the recruiting game well.
So welcome, Austin and Derek!

Right
But, as I posted above, the recruiting services and LJ generally agree. His last 3 All-Americans (Hali, Maybin, Odrick) were 4-star recruits. So, we’ll see how this plays out. I’m not OMG FIRE EVERYONE upset about it, it’s more of a “where’d these kids come from” thing. It’ll be interesting to watch.
Welcome to the family!

Man, he is a BIG kid
Very good at shedding blockers, but he doesn’t seem to get much of a push. Looks like he stays a little too high to get good leverage, but at 6’5", I could see why it’d be a little tough.
Maybe they're thinking OL down the line with him, who knows.
Still, there isn’t much that jumps out on that highlight reel that says “we need this kid right now”. Hope I’m wrong.

I'm kind of in your camp
I can see him becoming into the kind of guy that swallows up two blockers on every play, and in our defense, that’s an excellent asset, but I don’t think we needed to extend this offer right now.
Again, though, LJ Sr. is still LJ Sr., and this is why I’m not a football coach.
I hope he proves both of us wrong and becomes the next Odrick (plus, he’s from NJ, bonus points in my book already).
St. Augustine...
is also Jack Crawford’s high school. Johnson is the second South Jersey PSU recruit to follow someone from his HS to Happy Valley (Jamil Pollard is from West Deptford which is where Anthony Scirrotto played and is now a volunteer assistant coach.).

South Jersey kids will rarely be on any recruiting service's radar.
Once you’re past the Philadelphia suburbs, HERE BE DRAGONS.
Too quick to bash
I see a bunch of people just tearing these kids a new one. Lets at least give them a chance. Some of you guys are getting pissed for the staff offering these kids at a camp, but the camp was called “rising seniors.” Almost everyone at the camp was an under-the-radar guy. That’s why they host this camp. They practice and lifted all winter and spring, and are going to camps now, I think its possible that they have improved. I also have to point out that Randall Cobb went to UK as a 2 star, and just demolished SEC defenses pretty much all last season.
If either of you two new commits (or any recruit) are reading this, take it from a student, we love all the football players, and welcome aboard

Just not in an O$U kind of way. Just needed to clarify what was otherwise extremely well put. I see nothing wrong with getting big kids that LJ and Bradley think they can turn into players.
