In 2006, the auditors' review of athletes' car registration forms found that they were incomplete and sometimes inconsistent with the car registry maintained by University Transportation and Parking. Compliance officials vowed to correct the problem.
But last year, the auditors reviewed car registrations of 152 athletes and observed vehicles driven by football players to spring practice. Auditors found that 44 athletes bought parking permits for, received parking tickets in, or were seen driving cars that weren't registered.
Records obtained in May show that football players continue to submit incomplete forms, lacking sales prices, dates of purchases, co-signers and other required information.

I'm even going to use the subject line for this one.
I don’t mean to brag, but….
The premise of Jacobi’s post is that this recent scandal “might place the very legitimacy of the compliance department at stake.” Honestly, we’re well past that. They self-report minor violations in order to enhance their credibility, but never get to the root of the problem to prevent them from happening. Then they try retain plausible deniability by feigning confusion. Apparently, it’s been a recipe for success. After all, Jim Tressel beats Michigan.

Yet while Tressel's admirable qualities have been trumpeted, something else essential to his success has gone largely undiscussed: his ignorance.

He's yelling because it is on point!!
Read the article and tell me you aren’t laughing; then angry at all the lame ass excuses by all the overpaid “public servant” coaches that complain about how difficult their jobs are; then incredulous that the public, in general, buys their lame excuses
The coaches have a full time job of controlling the possible; we all know these are kids; for the most part GOOD kids; but still kids. And they are going to make mistakes; they are going to be tempted and fall; but IF these coaches are serious about the STUDENT part it is not a very difficult job to rule out people/players like TP (how appropriate are those initials?).
We as adults need to allow them to fail so that they grow; but not for blatantly breaking the rules or acting as if they are more important or better than other STUDENTS. So if they get in a fight, or drink before they are 21 or try some weed and get caught, so what? WE weren’t perfect; we tried things as kids we don’t do as adults. And again, if these coaches did their damn jobs these minor issues would be the only thing that could or would cause problems. And I don’t think those are difficult or life altering; they are life lessons.
And your comment about who heads the compliance department (de facto) is correct. He sets the tenor and the tone. And that makes ALL the difference (to quote Robert Frost)
May?!? (How's that for a subject line.)
How had they not gotten their s%#t together by then?

I gather from this, which I read the entire article on the Columbus Dispatch this morning, that either the compliance dept doesn't communicate with the football coaches or the coaches ignore them.
There is no other answer. Its either, compliance dept: Hey coach, TP’s fourth car this month is not registered and the forms are incomplete. Coach: ah, crap, we are too busy to deal with this
or
Compliance dept: these guys just change cars too often to keep up. Its really not that big a deal, Wooo Beat Michigan!
My grammer skills need improved.
This ties in to the Morning Call article that Ben linked
Do you know who is the de facto head of PSU’s compliance department? One Joseph V. Paterno.
Buckeye doesn’t get that and probably never willl.

^^^^ This.
Both the coaches and the staff have to care about compliance. Even then, one determined knucklehead teenager can still cause a lot of pain.
That's not good news
Well, for Ohio State fans.
For the rest of us…giggity.

Pryor has a lawyer now.
Yesterday he said that he was driving a loaner because his car was being repaired, and he had recieved no special benefit. Seriously. A 2011 300z, as a loaner, to a 21 year old kid. It’s like they can’t even hear what they’re saying at this point.
Our rival is Stanford.
He drives a lot of loaners. Every time he gets a ticket he’s in a loaner.
So where’s his real car? If he has a car, it should be in a garage somewhere, right? So let’s see it?
First question I asked was who is paying his lawyer.
If the lawyer is working for free….“IT’S AN NCAA VIOLATION YOU DUMMIES!!!!!”
Our rival is Stanford.
I don't believe young Mr. Pryor need concern himself with NCAA eligibility any longer

I think that's where the slight of hand is
He could have bought a 94 baby blue Ford Escort back when he started school that’s just collecting dust in a lot somewhere, and the premise all along has been “well your car needs some work here’s a loaner while we fix it, pick anything you want off the lot.” “It’s still not ready, you need to bring that loner back in so we can get it off our books, but just pick another one.”
also, for those of you wondering
I googled it, and it’s spelled sleight of hand. You learn something new every day.

He’s driving….a….submarine!
You can’t see it because it’s underwater!
No, really. I asked Mr. Peezy himself if he could send me a picture of him driving his car. He sent me this:

Kind of like one of those Russian egglady things?
I have to drive this loaner car while that loaner car is being fixed that I needed to drive while the other loaner car was being fixed that was necessary because my other loaner car had to be looked at which was necessary because the other loaner car I had was getting its oil changed which was necessary because I drove it across statelines on a test drive which was necessary because my other loaner car needed some work on its breaks which was necessary because I was busy paying off the original car I bought with tattoos which needed to be paid off with signatures and gold pants. Its really quite simple. Everyone does it.

It took me way to long to figure out what you meant by "Russian egglady things"
But Woody Hayes approves of the analogy

It's hidden where tOSU Compliance Department officials will never look.

I should have mentioned,
his mom said the car is hers, she bought a 2007 with 5k miles on it and he had it for the weekend or something. Then his dad said he (TP) traded in his 07 charger for it.

I <3 Ohio.
A selection of comments.
This is nothing but a load of BS. Every college in the US does this very same crap, as with all the players. They just haven’t been caught yet. Jim Tressel was doing nothing but protecting his players. What any GOOD coach would do.
Broken record.
Will you people stop acting like sanctimonious church ladies? The suspended license in the whole scheme of things is NO BIG DEAL. I’m not advocating that people do this, and I’m not saying it’s a smart way of doing things, but PEOPLE DO IT ALL THE TIME.
Kills, steals, whatever.
Walk to show support for Jim Tressel saturday at 6pm.

Oh, it gets better. From the link:
One of my friends got something sent to him on facebook today. Apparently there is going to be a “walk” to show support for Jim Tressel. It is going to start on Lane Avenue on campus, and end up at Tressels home in Upper Arlington where everyone is going to sing Carmen Ohio out front.
Part of me wishes they would sing “We Shall Persevere” only to show their complete cluelessness.
Point being, if you want your team to represent the values of pasty-faced WASPs, then that means you should recruit a team full of pasty-faced WASPs. This, of course, will never happen because that would mean your beloved alma mater would be perrennial losers. But if you’re going to indenture your plantation slaves to play free minor league football for your beloved alma mater, that means you have to accept and be realistic about the baggage that goes along with that.
I’m going to withhold all comments from this one. Moving on.
I could read comments like these all day.

Another classic.
Apparently the equipment manager is to blame.
That’s disappointing and implies our equipment manager is incompetent or corrupt or both. It sounds like he should lose his job. It’s also hard for me to believe that Storm would steal equipment to sell. It is safe to assume if he were caught stealing equipment he would be kicked off the team. Risk vs reward?? Is a couple of hundred bucks worth everything you’ve worked so hard for? Is his finacial situation that bleak?
It's a culture of honor
Mind your own business, we’ll take care of our own problems, etc. In that sense Ohio State is better suited for the SEC than any other Big Ten school.
So this is totally NOT lack of complete institutional control, right?
Head coach: lied, and attempted to cover it up. AD didn’t ask questions, pretended all is well, and continued to defend the head coach. University president (best case scenario) was completely kept in the dark about something that might destroy the reputation of his school’s athletics department. And now the kicker: the COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT saw lack of compliance, but apparently didn’t realize (or couldn’t read) the department name in front of their own offices, and chose to not do anything about said lack of compliance.
There really weren’t any before, but there are now ZERO rational excuses for saying that this was only Tressel, acting alone. This is a textbook example of lack of institutional control permeating multiple levels and departments within the university, ALL of which could have raised the red flag at any time and brought the hammer down, but chose not to.
IMO opinion, this situation has far eclipsed USC (which I honestly thought would never happen).
ABSOLUTELY!
Well said; and now go back and look at what happened at Boise State. I’m no fan of theirs but look at how QUICKLY and DECISIVELY they acted re their TENNIS TEAM situation. And the NCAA (the folks in the clown suits!!!!) hits THEM with Lack of Institutional Control!!!!
This isn’t POTATO/POTATO (you know the thing with how you PRONOUNCE the word); this is comparing a really nice grouper you’d catch for dinner to a great white shark.
OSU (whoever started the tOSU crap is a loser and a bozo) should be HAMMERED!!
I wonder what grade Archie will get after this is all settled
Archie has been praised by his supervisor for running a tight ship. He received the highest rating – exceeds expectations – during his most recent performance review.
