NCAA 12 Instant Review
Met the mailman at the box today to get in some college football action before the all star game tonight. Here are my quick thoughts about the team, the game and stuff in general - for no particular reason - with no authority or weight.
Gameplay - Much improved over 2010, not much over 2011. The game feels great, looks great and I noticed that running backs and linebackers seemed to easier to control. Best part was watching my linemen actually seeking out defenders to block on long runs so it wasn't just me vs 11.
Features - Started a dynasty and you can design a coach like you used to design players - cool, but not very many options. I didn't have a fleshed out plan for the conference realignments and it was a little clumsy to invent on the fly so I had to go off line, figure out the conferences I wanted to make and now I have to get back into the game - this is probably the part of this years game I was most anticipating.
Penn State - McGloin is starting but Bolden is a crazy stud running and throwing on the run - I'll definitely promote him. Silas Redd is a total BEAST - running over people or just juking them totally out of their shoes. One game in and Justin Brown was a difference maker and Devon Smith is a BURNER. Makes me want to head to vegas...
That's all so far... TV got hijacked for Despicable Me... blasted childrikens...

Not using PSU until the named rosters come out (I did send a template to the PS3 guy since he was asking for some)
But I did start out as the OC at FIU. And by the end of the 2nd week I’d lost my top 3 RB’s, starting QB, & starting WR.
It’s still been really fun to play though

Just got back home with it
The Best Buy I stopped at didn’t have it on the shelf. Looked around for a special display, saw nothing. Asked the nerdiest, most enthusiastic employee they had, and he looked at me and said “yeah we should have it. The basketball game, right?”
He eventually went over to customer service and commandeered a pre-order from behind the counter. So I got a copy, but man, that store doesn’t seem to be a tightly-run ship if at 6:30 at night they didn’t even know that NCAA12 had shipped.
Luring recruits with my new "Posting HD" scheme since '08.
THEY STILL MAKE COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAMES
I thought those were discontinued?

2 Game in update...
Redd dropped 190 yds on Pitt in the opener and had two more TD’s on the Smurf Turf at Boise is a whupping. Its got me all buzzy with antici……
pation.
Starting as a coordinator is tough – having no control on when to go for it or kick or play D.
All my TE’s got the dropsies though – especially on balls from Bolden who seems to have a much stronger arm than Mac with a little less touch… No worries though – except that this game is going to run my life for a couple weeks.

Great Game - like it so far...
In customizing coaches, you can only go up to age 68. Can’t get him to look anything like Paterno. Hate that you can’t make coach w/o headsets.
Like the fact that they have the new PSU Unis. Wish they would make minor changes to Beaver Stadium (correct logo over entrance tunnel, add the “2008” date to the list of championship dates, etc.)
Overall, fun, but I, too, am waiting for rosters to start a dynasty.

But Ohio State was the champion in 2008!
Cory Geiger asks Paterno if talk about his future bothers him. "You bother me," Joe tells Geiger.
Not for long!

Got the game yesterday too
I started a dynasty last night. The conference modifying feature has pretty much every option you would want (even including an option to allow night games in November). The first thing I did? Have Notre Dame join the B1G and relegate Minny to the MAC.
The recruiting in the dynasty mode is much improved too. The happy/sad/angry football-head during phone-calls is gone. Now phone calls have the recruit chose a random topic (the usuals are all there like facilities, coaches, tradition, campus lifestyle, but now there is also “coach loyalty” but every team seems to have a C rating in that category) and you can decide how to discuss the topic (measure interest level, make a pitch, sway interest, downplay competing schools, and change topic). I think this system makes everything closer to reality, but it seems like getting high-profile recruits is a little too easy.
In week 1 of my season, McGloin suffered a season-ending injury so the QB controversey ended pretty quick. Having played with both, I can’t say one is better than the other in this game, it just depends on if you prefer a pocket passer or a scrambler. Personally, having McGloin with the player’s own decision-making can’t be beat. If EA Sports wanted to be realistic, they should have a “Going Rouge” attribute where McGloin does whatever he wants (which is going deep). Speaking of realism, Herbstreit’s game commentary mentioned something about McGloin having poise, which is insanity when everybody knows that he has moxie.
The gameplay itself is solid. All the animations are alot cleaner, which actually make the gameplay a lot more fluid, especially on running plays. It feels like the offensive lines miss too many blocks though (both for PSU and the opponents). In evenly matched games, pretty much 10% of the plays have a defender going untouched to the QB/HB in the backfield, it doesn’t sound like much, but it is.

I think I actually heard Herbie use the word "Moxie"
when describing McGloin. May have been the beer, though. I thought it was pretty cool.
I wish they would use the quote from last year’s Ohio State game – “The kid with moxie has a pair…”

Going 'Rouge'
Whether intentional or accidental, nice play on words re: Rogue/Rouge
Alea jacta est...
Nice catch
The rogue/rouge mix-up was unintentional, but I’ll take credit for it anyway. A McGloin “Going Rouge” t-shirt could be a good seller…
As far as the poise/moxie thing, they definitely used “poise” to describe McGloin’s play; the dissapointment of it was 100% engrained in my memory. When I was later playing with Bolden, Herbstreit said he had “poise and moxie”. Herbstreit’s compliments on QB’s in the game are obviously randomly selected, but if they worked-in the poise/moxie thing for PSU, it would have been a nice touch (especcially if they repeated the respective word for each QB on every.single.play.)
Rec for this:
“If EA Sports wanted to be realistic, they should have a "Going Rouge" attribute where McGloin does whatever he wants (which is going deep). "
Anyone know when someone will upload full rosters?
Seems like a necessity.

I actually think Newsome might be my QB of choice in this game.
He is the best runner of the bunch and he doesn’t suffer from either the Chad Pennington arm that McGloin has or the Jeff George arm that Bolden has.
A couple more games under my belt and I've solved the Bolden Conundrum
Now I’m feeling a lot more confident with Bolden – he HAS to be on the move to throw well. Seems like any time he’s in a nice soft pocket he Jeff Georges it – to borrow the phrase. But roll the man out and he throws a great accurate ball. He’s been banged up at least once a game though, but I blame the OC (me) for using screen passes as QB runs…
Also, I ’m starting to get worried that playing as a coordinator it might be hard to reach some of the goal targets in a traditional 5 minute game… just not enough time to get the rushing and passing stats…
I’d absolutely be up for a BSD PS3 league
I spent a lot of time on my conferences and implemented my Balanced Leagues plan – elevated MWC and expanded every AQ league to 12 and eliminated the bowl tie ins… now if I can just figure out how to turn that into a tournament instead of a bowl season…

Nothing a ratings adjustment can't fix
Bumped up Bolden’s throwing accuracy from 74 to 85, and dropped his speed from 91 to 85. He’s now an 86 overall, after being just an 80.
Douche McPick saw his throwing power drop from 83 to 78 and his throwing accuracy went down from 91 to 82. He went from an 85 overall to a 77.
Newsome went from 84s in throwing power and accuracy to 87 and 79, respectively. He’s now a 76 overall. I should probably drop his accuracy to something lower than that, though…
PJ switched to a RS freshman (inexplicably, he’s a sophomore in the game), and his throwing accuracy went from 78 to 85. Speed adjusted from 88 to 86. He’s now a 78 overall.
I’ll play one season, and almost certainly rescind McPick’s scholarship as soon as I can.

It used to be in there
You could hear it right at kickoff. Granted, it was kindof muffled so they could probably use the same soundbyte somewhere else in the game, but still.

its there right before a kickoff after a touchdown

Devon Smith is a burner?
Hes and 85 speed or somewhere around there if your using the default rosters. He wouldnt beat some linebackers.
This is why the speed difference is moved to 0!

I'm doing some updates to the PSU roster
i.e. changing some ratings, shuffling positions, adding guys that were missing, etc. I’m just trying to bring the default rosters (all named) in line with the real team. Started last night and will probably finish tomorrow sometime Saturday or Sunday. If people are interested, I’ll upload them when I finish for people to download and use in their dynasty. This is for XBOX.
Also, 1 question. They mess up the safety situation every year at PSU and I get confused. Is Astorino still at Hero and Sukay at FS, or do I have it backwards?
I'm on the Internet cause I'm an Internet thug.
nope. you're right
(at least, that’s the way it was most of last year for Astorino & Sukay)
Fire Dan Snyder
Thats what I thought
For some reason I thought I read somewhere that they switched this offseason, but that might just be making up football stories in my head to keep me from going completely insane during the offseason.

Anybody know what your highest rated recruit is (That's not P/K)?
Because so far my highest is an 81, which is quite different from last year

I got 1 or 2 guys in the 80s last year
I believe 1 was the top TE (and maybe even top player) in the class. He started for me as a frosh the next season. Played like a WR at the TE spot and was faster than almost every single linebacker and even some safeties. The other was an ATH I turned into a DE. Guy was 6’6" and 280some. Wasn’t a great pass rusher, but was a hell of a run stopper.

In season 1. I beat bama soundly
Then I decided to sim temple. I lost 30-16. And then u lost to Iowa. Every receiver to catch a pass got hurt. I also rs bolden and jones. Mcfavre got a season ending injury so now I’m down to knew. He actually isn’t that bad. I rs redd and green is absolutely a beast. He had almost 300 yards against bama. Such a great game. I’m gonna start my teambuilder dynasty soon with the PSAC.
