Jack Crawford & The meaning of overrated
I made a comment in an email today that Jack Crawford was one of the most overrated players in PSU history. Was I jumping the gun?
Too hard on the kid? What other PSU players did we hear about who never lived up to the hype?

I wouldn't go that far.
I don’t think he’s “one of the most overrated players in PSU history”. I would say he hasn’t performed to expectations, whether those are fair or not.
And, obviously the #1 overrated PSU player was Morelli.
Luring recruits with my new "Posting HD" scheme since '08.
I agree that the expectations weren't particularly fair.
This is a kid that barely played organized football before college. He’s still learning the nuances of the game. He’s such a tremendous physical specimen that everyone raised the bar too high for him.
That said, a kid with those gifts can break out at anytime. Here’s hoping he does for his own sake.

Not even close
There are too many to name here, but just go back and look at the past recruiting classes. How many 4-5 star guys (OMGZSTARTSDUNTMATR!) were busts, and how many 2-3 star guys became all-conference or all-America for PSU.
A Garden State Nittany Lion...
Hm. Future post idea formulating...
As for Crawford, I’m not sure he’s most overrated, but I definitely agree with the OP’s statement about hearing that Crawford will break out every year. He’ll be the starter, but without some marked improvement, LJSr. should be ready to yank him quickly.

Antonio Logan-El will always be the ultra-bust.
Overrated? Not particularly. He reminds me more of an Omar-Easy-late-bloomer with more of an upside.
At least Crawford is a regular starter and Morelli, um… had that great game against Akron? Nothing can be said of this guy who faded into Bolivian.

IDK
on the overhyping of AS…coming out of HS he had the single season Pa rushing record;…that accomplishment will garner hype in general. It did so for the person whom previously had the record prior to him (Mungro, hs out near the Poconos) and Mungro beat out the old record, which was held by Rocket. So there’s some building history of hype that simply follows such accomplishments.
Does it translate…well, no – not always…

Right.
I don’t know if AS was overhyped or overrated. He was a phenomenal high school talent who liked partying way too much once he got to PSU. It’s what great about Silas Redd, at least so far — the kid has his head on straight and realizes that he’s capable of greatness.

He could still break out
In 2007 hardly anyone knew about Evans, even up to the Indiana game he was still pretty under the radar. He finished the season with like 12.5 sacks. Then in 2008, 2 days after my purchase of a #48 jersey, he got arrested. We all panicked. Some guy named Maybin who was way too skinny to be a good DE got a few starts until Evans was allowed to return… Then he became a star. There’s nothing saying this year couldn’t be Crawford’s…
Crawford wasn’t really “highly rated” either, he got a lot of attention because the sports media felt foolish for not writing about Evans and Maybin prior to their breakout seasons. Mainstream sports media is 90% prognosticating, and Crawford suddenly looked to be a safe bet. Never mind that he was only starting b/c Evans and Maybin both left 2 years early…
Anyway, the flashlights eat our human power grids, our souls if you will. So i destroyed them, and if a few precious panties were burnt or soiled in the reckoning then so be it
The fact that you had to use the word "still" in your title
Signifies that he’s more overhyped than overrated. It’s the same broken record we’ve heard for two years now after that solid ’09 season.

Overrated is for people who were given more credit than they deserved for what they did on the field *cough*Laurinaitis*cough*.

It's not even Crawford's fault, really.
He was a four-star on Scout and a three-star in Rivals. Crawford’s downfall is the people who leak overly optimistic practice reports on how he’s terrorizing the offensive line every year, and is destined to become the next Courtney Brown or Michael Haines. That stuff filtered down eventually, and people began to think that he was some kind of huge bust, when he’s probably just barely underperforming what realistically should’ve been expected of him.

He is probably more of a victim
of a terrible ’09 offensive line than anything else. I bet he did look like an absolute beast going against them in spring/preseason practice that year.

Totally agreed
Every year, reporters from open summer practices talk about how Crawford looked “virtually unblockable.” Unfortunately, that has turned out to be more an indictment of our O-Line than an endorsement of Crawford. My own expectations for him have been relatively modest, since he only started playing in High School. But even by that more reasonable standard, he’s been a disappointment at times—against better O-linemen, he is totally ineffective; someone with his size and strength should be able to do better.

I would be totally unblockable against some of the O Lines PSU put on the field in recent years...truth
Hire Mike Pettine Jr!!!!!!!!
Oh God
Optimistic practice reports. I was convinced Morelli and Scott were going to be splitting Heisman votes in August of 2007.
Choosing penn state over Manchester United, my god!!
This kid could be a lock for playing defensive end on a soccer team, making money, nowl ook at him!

He was also the beneficiary
of Odrick in 2009 drawing double teams. This year may be similar.
On a slightly unrelated note:
I’ve always loved how Crawford’s recruiting pic was taken next to some boats in a marina.

Quintus or Quinten McDonald (they were twins) or whatever his name was?
Wasn’t he the first “#1 recruit in the country” PSU got? Or maybe he was “USA Today Player of the Year”…something along those lines. And while he was good, I do not recall his playing lights out.
Maybe I’m wrong, but he just sticks in my mind due to all the hype he got (for the time – mid-80s). I thought at the time he would dominate, but he didn’t. He didn’t come close to the living up to the hype LaVar did. Heck, his name never even comes up here when we talk about the top linebackers of all time at dear old State.
