Douchiest Colleges
How are we ranked #2???
someone at Pennlive claims that one of the writers attended the university of Pittsburgh so that explains why we are ranked where we are. The other writer attended Notre Dame, this explains why they aren't ranked. My question is what colleges that are not on the list should be. I do not know how to add a poll but my picks of schools that should be on this list:
Duke
Princeton

Beauty is subjective, so I'm not going to argue with you about that.
But all of the following have appeared on the cover of GQ, and all of the following are subjectively hot to me: Rachel Bilson, Lindsay Lohan, Adriana Lima, the Victoria’s Secret cat walk girls, Beyonce, Miranda Kerr, and Olivia Wilde, among many, many others. You picked one douchey looking Tom Brady. If finding one bad cover is the appropriate method of judging a magazine, none of them are worthwhile.

Somehow showing a bunch of women most men find attractive doesn't seem to overcome the doucheyness of the magazine in total.
I picked that cover because it reinforces the doucheyness or outright silliness (Brady looks like someone from an SNL sketch or something) of the content inside most editions of GQ. As far as I’m concerned, you reinforced it yourself because that is an extremely douchey pose Megan Fox has got going on there.

I actually like GQ for what it is. Nice clothes, expensive watches, and scantily clad women. Everybody wins there.
But what it is is not a sports magazine. Any time I see a sports article, my first instinct is to glaze right over it.

Yeah, that was ages ago
everything changed drastically in 08. My class (class of 2011) is probably being the most squeezed by 09 and 10 grads finally catching up on their deferrals/clerkships/getting their first associate jobs after contract or doc review and ‘12 grads lining up associate jobs with their internships this summer. But even for the people still in school, the list of employers participating in OCI is down 50% or so from the pre-08 era. It’s like that everywhere, but of course the top schools were batting nearly 1.000 and are now just around .500
Right. The legal market is slow-cyclical.
Business/industry has to bounce back before companies will sue or resort to other legal means (transactional included), which means law firms have to wait to hire. Which is why there will be a logjam for a couple of years, but it will get sorted out.

You're more optimistic than most
Most think it’ll never get back to pre-2008 levels. It was kind of a bubble, and it obviously popped, but that level was unsustainable anyway.
Yeah, pre-2008 is never coming back
The big firms were all growing as fast as they could, handing out offers like candy to anyone qualified, and stuffing summer/first-year associates in conference rooms if they ran out of office space. It was obviously not sustainable for very long.

Pre-2008 shouldn't ever come back.
That was a totally ludicrous market that managed to turn out some truly awful lawyers who spent 4 years doing glorified document review before being dropped into the job market with nothing but a degree and a line on their resume from Sullivan/Dewey/Fried Frank/name your white shoe firm. What happened during that time period was shameful.

I've decided that it is a legitimate possibility that the Pirates might be decent.
my point is that when you have debt you are always a slave to it
even if you’re working for yourself…and going to work for yourself is far less possible if you have massive debt.
Having no debt means amazing flexibility, being able to pursue your dreams and passions and tell sucky bosses to shove it at a moment’s notice.
Yes
but I’d rather have debt and a job than live in my parent’s basement circling jobs in the newspaper that I won’t get.

that's the problem
that debt in no way shape or form guarantees a job that makes enough to pay it off. Not in this economy.
There was another lawyer guy here (can’t remember his name) who had lots of debt and even a great clerkship and had been searching for a job for a long long long time. He sounded miserable.
Right...
Factor in a Wife, a kid or two, and that $100,000 a year job doesn’t go nearly as far you think it will when you can live on $50 a week.
I've decided that it is a legitimate possibility that the Pirates might be decent.
but on the flip side
when you have no mortgage (and no rent) no car payments, no credit card debt and no school loans, that 100K a year job is more like being a millionaire. It doesn’t take that long to get there either.
Right.
It’s a lifestyle choice. My friend just graduated from Pitt Law with over 100K in loans at literally like 7%. He has a kid on the way and he is essentially doing Document Review for $30 an hour.
I've decided that it is a legitimate possibility that the Pirates might be decent.

Amex and MasterCard charge people for me to buy stuff off of them. Then they take some of that money and give it back to me. Free flights, free hotel rooms. When I pay with cash I get none of these things, and just give more money to the merchant. Doesn’t make any sense.
I also get to carry my cash an extra 10-20 days in an interest bearing checking account. Why would I pay with cash?

The legal market is influenced by where you're looking and the type of law you want to practice.
There are jobs and growing practice areas out there, especially now that things are turning around. But you have to do well in school and you have to want to do it. Also, the loan forgiveness programs for public service work are excellent and provide great opportunities for young attorneys to do good work for their communities. Highly recommended.

Big Firm jobs are hiring again, and the legal market is opening up. You can graduate and hang a shingle still, but that was always an option.
If you know where to look, are patient, and can get experience where yuo can, it’s not a difficult job market. People who sit around and whine about the job market make up a good portion of people who sit around not looking for a job.

Doing well at a T14 is one form of the “luck” I keep talking about.
You should seek clarification on what is meant by “the majority of grads”, “solid jobs”, and the source of that information. By all means let me know what you find out. I don’t have this kind of data or I’d pass it on.
WorldBFat is 29, single, and only sweats two things: perfecting his sound and South East Asia.
Again, however,
it’s not getting in that is difficult. It’s staying in. As I can tell you, and any attorney will, if you look at big law, you have to survive from junior to mid-level associate, and from there to senior, and the process repeats as a partner. And, of course, we’re looking nine years out for you, but right now, it’s not uncommon for a 750-1000 lawyer firm to add only 4-7 partners in a FY.
Again, don’t let us deter you, but also don’t be overconfident at all. There was a huge group or Morgans let go, and it did not matter that they were T14s.
"Is that a shot at me? 'cause that makes me want to read it all the less."
I'm not positive I want biglaw
and if I do, it won’t be for the long-term. Ideally, I’d get in, pay off the majority of my debts while I can still live a spartan lifestyle, then exit for midlaw or the public sector.
Then again, I’m sure that’s what plenty of people in my position say. It’s incredibly weird to be thinking about what’s going to happen 5-7 years down the line when I haven’t even sent in my first law school application. But I’m not scared, because I’ve been waiting for this moment, for all my life. (Oh lord.)

alumni base is more important. having gone through the job search, no one cares about the school I went to, they only care about my competence, my experience and my work ethic. there is no law school in america
that has less than 80% DBs. I was surrounded by douchers and to many i may have been one myself. There’s all kinds of bags. the ones who answer everything, the ones who ask absurd hyoptheticals, the ones who ask you for help on every aspect of every subject, just to turn around and ask the person next to you cause they dont trust you. its nothing but douchebags no matter where you go.
So true...
I went to school at night. The second class always ended at around 10:10. 9 out of 10 classes some one would ask a question, involving an absurd hypo, at about 10:09.

nothing can be less helpful than going to school with people in their 40s or 50s who have “life experience” and then ask questions at the end of class on an absurd yet oddly specific hypothetical. Then you realize they are just seeking free legal advice.
Stupid Questions...

oh yea agreed
i just meant that most of the older students would act as though they were so smart because they had “lived in the real world” but would ask questions just as lame and silly as the people they looked down upon. I myself was in the middle. I did law school after working a few years in finance. I never raised my hand. I wish i could report its because i understood everything, but in reality i just didnt want to participate.
anyway, douchebags come in varying ages, sexes and creeds. Its like the movie “They Live” only you dont need sunglasses to determine who the DBs are.
Agreed...
I took a year off in between undergrad and lawschool. Worked full time and went at night. I rarely participated in class. People don’t realize that if you just shut up and listen you learn a lot.

We tell them not to, out of realistic caring, and they keep going.
The big thing today isn’t getting an interview at 2L OCI or becoming a first-year associate. It’s sticking around to be a second-year associate. And, after law firms ended up with ostrich egg on their faces due to Above the Law highlighting mass layoffs, everything—or nearly everything—is now stealth. I know of one AmLaw in the city that no longer has any members of an associate class year, and I am sure either it’s not alone or there are others with one or two hop ons still holding on—out of twelve to fifteen. These are talented young attorneys with stellar academic pedigrees who now face zero realistic prospects other than going back to school.
Good luck, Devon. If you are doing it because you have a nearly unmarketable undergraduate degree, also consider adding time to your stay at Penn State and getting an additional degree that is marketable before applying to law school. If you are doing it for the money, remember that it is quite lottery-like now, and even if you “hit” on graduation from law school, there is a frighteningly high chance you will not continue to hit (if you go big law). If you are doing it out of your love for the law—which, at this point in your academic career, I am not sure how you would have acquired such love—then go for it, but also realize that you better love it for a considerably long time (to the tune of 2,100 billable hours per year, perhaps) because it’s not a 9-5, even when you’re a junior or mid-level partner.
"Is that a shot at me? 'cause that makes me want to read it all the less."
One other thing...
Devon,
From reading some of your thoughts on law school, I get the feeling you have read some of the more popular “what law school should I go to” and “what is law school like” message boards online. Although they can provide specks of golden information in an otherwise muddy river of discourse, they’re overwhelmingly as useful as books like Law School Confidential and Planet Law School. Do yourself a favor: in addition to considering what we have to say, use law firm directories to identify lawyers who were Penn State undergraduates. Call these lawyers (after 5:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday for the truest emotional response), identify yourself as a Penn State student seeking advice, and ask if you could speak to them for five or ten minutes about their decision to become lawyers, their experiences in law school, and their experiences in practice. And shut up and listen (I say this kindly). Whether or not it will affect your decision to attend law school is unknown, but what is known is that you will have a hell of a better idea about law school and the practice of law than before you called.
Best of luck, and maybe if you’re unlucky, you’ll even chat with one of us. (Perhaps you should mention you’re at Penn State and" involved in many clubs, including BSD…." :))

It's really all about expectations with law school.
If you think you’re going to be fine 200K in debt because you’ll have a 150K year job right out of school, you’ll wind up disappointed, and broke.
At the end of the day, practicing law is competing. You spend most of the time preparing, a small amount of time nervous as hell about the big game, an even smaller amount of time playing the game. Then your happy when you win, and miserable when you lose. There are some highs, some lows, and a ton of stress.

youll be lucky to get a 150K a year job
and will probably be around 200 in debt. but it will by no means make you broke. I was there, i make not even half of the 150K, and i am living quite comfortably. Im able to take trips and make discretionary purchases. It’s not the financial black hole youre painting it out to be, theres payment plans that will not make you destitute. youll pay it back longer and in that way you are tied down, but the longer you go, the more you make and the easier those payments get.
Best advice i ever got was “dont let the money deter you, you will always have a chance to pay it back.” Its quite rare to find a lawyer out there who is begging for change on the side of the street, and most all of them (except those who’s daddys are the one who got them into the school in the first place) had identical debt.
You'll be lucky to get a 50K per year job straight out of school.
I've decided that it is a legitimate possibility that the Pirates might be decent.
i dunno
document review, while terribly mundane, pays about 30-35 an hour. Its a nice stop gap while looking for the associate job. And it fits in well with your grace period!
You'll be lucky to get a doc review job straight out of school.

WorldBFat is 29, single, and only sweats two things: perfecting his sound and South East Asia.
Yeah people who graduated more than 2 years ago
are seriously underrating the effects of a huge downturn in hiring. If half of the people who used to get federal clerkships and biglaw jobs are now filtering down to midlaw and public sector, then the half that used to get those are getting random jobs and doc review, and the people who used to get contract and doc review are squeezed, because there simply aren’t unlimited positions everywhere.

Small Town NEPA Cop Story
A friend of mine had an abusive husband*. One night their newborn baby was crying. He was raging around the house swinging a gun, and told her to “shut the little fu@ker up” or he would kill them and himself.
A neighbor called the cops, she went on the porch, he following, still screaming. When the cops showed up, they asked my friend “what did you do to piss him off like this”.
*his brother is in jail for murder
Also, his second wife died under mysterious circumstances deemed suicide. We think he killed her and I think we are right. He got a quarter mil in insurance money, which he spent in about a year.
My friend is lucky she got out. We’ll skip the “why did she marry him” stuff. Trust me, everyone tried to stop her.

Although this is an egregious example,
generally the stories of NePA cops run along this line.
Add to the fact you have neighboring fire companies exchanging fisticuffs over who showed up first and can run a line to spray water, and you realize why insurance premiums are so high and general feelings of safety so low.
"Is that a shot at me? 'cause that makes me want to read it all the less."

Start telling women to stop using the PFA system to manufacture some bullshit story to kick their Husband/Boyfriend out of the house so they can get an advantage in divorce/custody litigation. 97% of the PFA’s that get filed are total shit. Utter nonsense. And they distract from the ones that actually matter.
Women need to stop using a system that’s designed to protect them from danger to gain an advantage in Court. It’s literally the story of the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” acted out 100 times a day five days a week.

Any list that omits Harvard is not worth regarding
I mean, students call it “Dropping the H-bomb” when they tell people that they go to Harvard. Princeton folks tend to be less douche, more asshole (there IS a difference)—then again, they do have a habit of wearing bright orange, which is pretty douchey. Penn State (duh)
At the time the chemical engineering program was in the top 5 in the nation. And the Schreyer Honors college was highly regarded and super exclusive. I really have no idea how it is now.
I was on full scholarship there. I was offered good scholarships to other schools and though my parents could have afforded me to go to a private school, they raised me to be fiscally conservative and to see through name brand status of everything, including universities. So it was totally my decision to not force them to lay out the cash for an Ivy, or MIT or one like that.
And I have never ever regretted it. Penn State’s career development/ recruiting program is second to none, especially for engineers.
That's what I thought
and I suppose that makes sense, but you really don’t see many people turning down Princeton for Penn State.

I'm sure Princeton is great for some people.
My uncle went there and never speaks ill of it, but I wouldn’t call him a superfan either.
Another thing that kind of annoyed me was a kid who graduated a couple years ahead of me in HS went to Princeton on a baseball scholarship, but I know he didn’t have the grades or SATs to get in at all if not for being a baseball star. That probably happens everywhere but it rubbed me the wrong way.
My Mom’s co-worker has a son who plays football for MIT. But he could also have gone on an academic scholarship.
I didn’t even know MIT had sports.

Well...
the short version is all their brochures tout their British tutorial system (small classes at least once a week for every class) as what makes Princeton so awesome. But I was going through the chemical engineering curriculum and saw that most of the classes didn’t offer that, they were three large lectures per week. I asked why and the guy said “Well for engineering there is just too much material to cover in four years to have those small section classes once a week.”
Which is undoubtedly true, most chemical engineers don’t even finish in four years at PSU.
So then I asked “Ok then, so if the British tutorial system doesn’t apply to engineering, why should I choose to go to Princeton?”
The guy did one of those long pauses with a blank stare. Then he said, in the snottiest voice I’ve ever heard, “Because we’re PRINCETON!”
There was a bit more back and forth after that, but I cut the interview short. Also they showed me the crappy crappy crappy old freshman dorms and basically implied that they really didn’t care to upgrade them and freshman should be tortured anyway. (bathrooms were only on the ground floor of a four story dorm)
Someone should invent
a doucheometer. We need an objective way of measuring the degree of douchness.
I wonder if the author of that piece would call Poz a douche.
And if so, I wonder if the author would land before or over the U.S.-Canada border.

I cannot recall the “old” BSD ever determining when the usefulness of a thread ended and, as such, closure was warranted (except, of course, in the case of the trollapaloozas). Authoritah.
Let’s try this another way. We sat back as people helpfully pointed out what they’d like to see changed and unchanged about the site. We listened to what everyone had to say. Debate was reasonable, rational, and civil. And we thanked everybody for that, repeatedly. The thread reached the end of its usefulness in my view, and I closed it. That’s my call.
As the very last comment in that thread, I said that if anyone had any further complaints, email me. Number of emails I’ve received as of right now: Zero.
On one side, we have a vast majority of people who are here to talk about Penn State, don’t give a damn about Old BSD vs. New BSD. They come here for information about Penn State — the reason we all came here in the first place, regardless of whether it was 2007 or yesterday. They’re probably wondering what all of this bickering is about. Those are the people we care about.
On the other side are a vast, vast minority of complainers who have created their own alternative reality about the new writing staff — getting about 40% of the story, mind you — and are acting like daddy took away their favorite toy.
The people who are now writing for the site have a huge amount of passion and ideas to make this the best possible destination for people who want to talk about Penn State sports. It’s going to be fantastic. Page views are already up 35%. It can’t suck that much. We want you all to stay and participate vigorously.
You, Wifey, can love it or leave it. Pick one. But you’re not going to be permitted to continue this juvenile nonsense. Practically everyone else just wants to move on and talk football. You should do the same or move on.

My only problem with the changes
is the tone of a couple of writers who seem to imply that something was broken with BSD. Maybe it wasn’t what they wanted it to be, but it’s not a ghetto that needs to be gentrified – by magnaimous new writers – either. Ok, that was labored analogy, but one or two guys (I assume) need to get off their high horse(s) and recognize that they got the keys to a pretty sweet ride. A lot of stuff is being misinterpreted here.
And it’s not you or anyone else specifically. The writers are really enthusiastic about not only being here, but excited about the prospect of improving what was already accepted as a very good site.
In my opinion, a fair amount of people are looking at it through Blog War eyes and automatically discounting any legitimately altruistic intentions because of it. As if we’re thinking “we’re going to work hard on all these new ideas because screw those people, that’s why!”.
It’s not “we know what’s good for you”. It’s “we think you’re really going to like this” (even while we’re probably privately thinking “we hope you’re really going to like this”).

Yea, I could have seen this one coming.
And I generally agree with Chris. We don’t mean to come off as “We know what’s good for you” as much as we mean “We aren’t (old) Mike and fugi, so things are different.” I only know how to write how I do, same with the rest of the guys. And I think we’ve organized quite a decent outline for everyone. There will be growing pains, for sure, but we aren’t telling you what you need to do; rather we’re telling you what we’re going to do and what you can expect from the new BSD.
The “wait til you see what’s next, it’s great!” is meant to assure you that we didn’t come in here with the intention of submarining the old site. We’re genuinely excited to be here and to write about some new stuff. We’re glad that you’re already here; the goal is now to keep you here, and add even more people.

It isn't being held back so to speak
but lets be real. This is the internet. We’re standing around arguing about how a thread got closed because it’s Chris’ plan to fly back in a time machine to 1984 and tell you all how to think.
It’s a circular argument. Yes. Mike is gone. Yes. The new writers are different.
But. It’ll be ok. And if it isn’t. Well. It’ll probably still be ok.
I don’t mean to be quick with people. It’s why I avoid this argument. But at somepoint it’s just like “I get it”

I understand what you are saying, but you are going to have these conversations anytime there is a transition whether it be business, coaching changes, or blog changes. Sometimes its best to just let it play out.
Had the other thread stayed open, people could get what they needed to say off their chest and be done with it. Closing it down allowed it to spill into another thread. The thread would’ve died naturally had it been left alone.

Pizza Perfect?
Dallas is not Old Forge. Pizza Perfect is along the lines of Victory Pig and Pizza L’oven. Greasy crusts.
Old Forge pizza is, well, Old Forge pizza. Revello’s, Gigerelli’s (I know I spelled that incorrectly), and … shoot, one of the other Gigerelli’s (again) opened his own now. Dry crusts. And, in the case of Revello’s, the best cheese blends.
I’d ask you to hand over your NePA card, but Lord knows all of us traded them in for tokens at Rich’s Golf years ago.

And, to be precisely correct, Trucksville is not Old Forge....
"Is that a shot at me? 'cause that makes me want to read it all the less."
If you check out my Mom's blog she actually writes about trying to figure out their cheese mix.
It was funny because it wound up being heavily reliant on this cheap ass processed american “cheese” called cooper cv sharp. Mel’s pizza is bad ass, but it owes a debt to our friends in Peckville.
As I’ve always said, the crust is the worst part of bad pizza, and the best part of good pizza. Mel makes her pizza square, and we literally fight over the corner pieces.
I've decided that it is a legitimate possibility that the Pirates might be decent.

Oh wow, I go play trivia for a few hours and look what happens.
Let me clarify the point I was trying to make in the other thread. My objection is not with the new content, other than the fact that right now I can’t keep up. Your answer is pick and choose. Ok, I’ll try. My comments have mostly been with how the authors communicate with members in the comments. I think if you look at my non-silly comments you will see that. At times the authors seem to have been dismissive, because you didn’t think it had any “value.” That’s your judgment, but it still may not seem useless to the person who made the effort to comment. I didn’t like the way Mike responded to dontcallmescootercommented on it and tried to explain further. You responded but shut down the thread after chastising me, without giving me an opportunity to respond here. I was going to let it go until I came back to this monster. I felt like I needed to chime in again. You may not respect or care about my views. That’s fine. I can deal with that. But the way you responded to PSUWifey tonight was just disgraceful. Regardless of who she’s married to and what she has said, she does not deserve to be treated like that.
I’m trying to adjust to the new tone (again it’s the tone and not the content). I expressed my thoughts initially in a fanpost someone had set up to discuss opinions about the “new-BSD.” I’m not pulling a Cartman and saying, “Screw you guys, I’m going home.” but I am asking for respect of my opinions as a long standing member of this site.
This is BSD, the crazy stirs itself.
by Paige2PSU on Jul 22, 2011 12:29 AM EDT via mobile reply actions 7 recs
I don't know if I agree with this.
If you look at the closed down thread, there are multiple instances of Chris, Mike and I being courteous and thankful with people for discussing the new site. However, as the comment thread grew, so did the same criticisms and the usefulness of the post was steeply declining.
However, in other threads, ones where we actually talk about football (and basketball), the writers have been more than willing to engage in discussion, and I think it’s been good discussion. The tone may be changing in the writing, but that’s only because the old BSD was used to essentially one writer doing all the work. Now you’ve got 12 great writers, each with their own style and slant. New does not equal bad, it equals different in this case.
I’m sorry you don’t like the new content flow. To be honest, we probably won’t be able to keep up this pace. But we wanted to come out in the first week and show everyone that we were dedicated to bringing great stories and fun ideas to BSD. I’m told some don’t like the new food series, but there will be some people that dislike everything we do. The series will be a hit, along with many of the other planned stories and series we have. Late last night the group received an email from Ben (who I’m sure won’t mind that I’m about to reveal the contents) where he said “I’m actually really excited for this [future] article.” The writers are excited, they are writing about what they love, and it’s going to show. If that means that the comments don’t rise to a 600-comment thread about Silas Redd peeing, maybe that’s a trade off. Community still exists, and the long threads will happen, but to paraphrase another, it’s a breath of fresh air to see a great article and then a healthy dose of comments that are actually about that article and not the Civil War, Russian leaders, or politics/religion.
Sorry for the long response, but it seems I missed a lot last night after I went to bed. So I’m trying to play catch up while continuing to make sure the site is running great. Like Chris said in the now shut down thread, do not hesitate to contact us with further constructive criticisms. Just because the thread was shut doesn’t mean that you can’t get a hold of us. We respect opinions of everyone, but understand that we also have opinions, especially about where the new site is headed. We hope you’ll all come along for the ride. Like Ben said, we’re excited.

Tact
Shutting down the thread demonstrated a lack of tact to some. The “issue” has now spread to at least 2 other threads and twitter. Shutting down the thread did not end the issue, but rather inflamed it (rightly or wrongly).
Remember, it’s often not what people do, but how they do it that makes all the difference.
I too am looking forward to the food articles. I love me some good food porn.

I'd counter that it was going to spill over anyway.
We’ve been dealing with this the entire week, not just in two articles. People want to air their grievances/criticisms. And that’s perfectly acceptable. People will also take to Twitter and bash us and/or actually engage us (I spoke with two fans yesterday via Twitter thanks to our new (by [insert author here] Twitter method). The thread was closed down because the usefulness of the thread had run its course. Nothing new was coming out and we were getting dangerously close to PERSONAL ATTACK and baseless accusation.
Also, who doesn’t love some good food porn? As I said in the Call to Arms, I’ll debate chili recipes all day long. Debating what the tone of the new site is/should be gets tiring. Quickly.

Not that anybody asked me but...
You guys are doing a fantastic job with the front page content. Seems like where you’re having problems is in moderating the board. As a person who used to run a blog, I have some experience in this. So I’ll just share my philosophy.
I always considered the front page mine. That was my bully pulpit to say whatever I want. The comments belonged to the people, and I tried to give them free reign to say what they wanted.
For the most part, this community has policed themselves for the past few years. I rarely had to step in and break things up. Now, all the sudden there are 10 new writers and they are dominating the comments. Half of these guys are completely new to the community or rarely commented. It’s great that you guys engage the community. That’s necessary, but you have to be careful not to try to steer the conversation. You already own the front page. If you take over the comments too, the people have nothing left. The ones that agree with you lockstep will continue to comment. The ones that don’t will stay quiet for fear of being shouted down by the mods who have their finger on the ban button. If that’s what you want, so be it. But BSD had taken a lot of criticism in the past for the “groupthink”. So keep that in mind. Don’t just swing the pendulum the other way.
Again, you guys are doing a great job on the front page content. I’d just suggets you take a softer stance on the comments and let the people decide what they want to talk about. If it bothers you, take your own advice and let it go.
And to the commenters, everyone needs to lay off and let the new crew settle in. Maybe things wouldn’t be so tense around here if y’all stopped complaining about the way things used to be.

Certainly not to hurt anyone's feelings but.......
Very well stated!!! Give us both, front pagers and commenters, some time to get used to the new era and hope that we’ll settle somewhere in the middle to appease all.

Maybe.
But we now have 12 guys who just want to talk sports. Once we get past all of this meta drama, I don’t see a problem with the writers engaging in the comment sections, especially if its in an article they didn’t write. The Friday Recruitin’ posts? You better believe I’m gonna be all over those comments, because its pertinent to my interests. I just want to talk football recruiting. Where I think you’re seeing some people steering conversations is to steer them away from politics/religion/divisive issues. The other threadjacks and tangents still exist – look at Pentimental’s FanPost on the Marcellus Shale – every comment is about war.
I’m not sure we’re trying to steer the comments one way or another within the framework of the article; rational debate will always have a place. But to suggest that because the authors are being more vocal in the comments is a bad thing (or potentially bad) I think is off base. We’re proud of our writing, and wish to engage in the discussion.

You know what's interesting?
My grandfather, while totally Central Pennsylvanian, really seems to mix you’uns and yinz. It’s kinda like, “Yunz”. No wonder he always liked the Steelers and Pirates.

reminds me of when the WWE bought WCW and ECW
and there were like 400 wrestlers and everything was convoluded and overcrowded. I am not a fan of having as many writers as you have now. When I first read your artcle on the “new” BSD and saw how many writers you had my inital reaction was “my God, will there be any commenters or is the whole page going to just be writers.” You comment that you have 12 guys who want to talk sports and that there is no problem with them commenting. I can say with honesty that this is the only sports blog I am a regular commenter on. I did not go to Penn State, I merely grew up a die hard Nittany Lion football fan. Yet I feel more comfortable commenting and putting in my two cents here than i do the blog at my alma mater or the other blogs to which I belong. Why? Because this place is fun, the tangents are entertaining, and to me the commenters are what make BSD (or any blog) what it is. The minute you blur the lines between writer and commenter, or use teh comments to further your point in the main article or another article you wrote, the more you take away what the comment section represents. Fugi did that, and it created I think a lot of animosity toward him for that.
I find closing the other thread due to crtiticisms cowardly and authoritarian. I think there is unnecessary content on the front page, personally i think the whole food recipe thing is weird and misplaced, especially since in that thread about the new BSD, the writers spent a majority of time telling people it was a “Penn State blog”. Your statement that the “series will be a hit” seems more like your trying to convince yourself than us.
All this being said, things will work themselves out. I may not like that you have 43 contributers or your odd obsession with food, or that the writers are a little overly aggressive in the comment section, but all things considered that is a management decision that I may have to learn to live with. And I will, so long as you keep up your end of the bargain and continue to provide straightforward content in the form of news, provide the community with a place to comment and vent and create civil war or arrested development tangents with as little interference as necessary and I will continue to come back here and enjoy what I’ve been partaking in these last 3 years. I look forward to seeing what you can provide me, I look to it with an open mind and I invite everyone else to do the same. If you dislike BSD today, check back in 3 or 6 months. As I said, I do not necessarily feel comfortable with alot of what is happening here this week, but it has only been that, a week. Let’s give it some time and let the growing pains subside and cast judgment then.
Ronald Reagan once said “I didnt leave the Democratic party, the Democratic party left me.” I do not want to leave BSD. I simply ask that you make sure BSD doesn’t leave me.

I actually enjoyed
the Tailgate Thursday fanposts that jesse. arranged with jessedotmom last year. I thought that bringing in food thursday was just an extention of the interest and success that that series of posts created last year.

A Thursday night, comment-friendly post for you all to have some fun with.

why cant we just save Thursday night for what it is
and of course I mean commenting on meaningless Big East football games?
Look, you guys are running the site now, i have no issue with putting what you want on it. My point on bringing it up was merely an example of something I dont personally see value in. Whether or not others do is not my concern and I am not going decide whether i like the new BSD regime or not based on it, I will just skip over it if i find it less meaningful than Pitt v. USF (which admittedly I may not).
The only reason I responded
was that Tailgate Thursday existed last year – albeit as a fanpost rather than front page material.

@swiggy04 - the closing of a thread that ran its course is not something new, I am sure it was meant to stop the flame war that is continuing.
I can recall Mike shutting down a few threads and banning people (long live M1EK). Lets not act like this is a huge deal, people kept hammering the same points over and over. Chris offered his personal email address and hoped we could move on…I guess we can’t?
That being said, football is coming so can’t we all just get along…do it for Rodney King!

Wife went to URI, we have some friends that have a house on Castle Beach...way to high class for me.
Love it up there…great place.
Actually went to a wedding at the house where they filmed Great Gatsby, very cool joint.

Over by castle hill cove?
Is that where you mean? Yikes, that’s too high class for just about everyone.
My family used to have a place on the other side of the Jamestown bridge in Narragansett. Pretty close to URI, actually. You know, where the paupers’ have their beach houses.

Yeah man that place is insane, about 2 summers ago we were hanging on the beach and Nils Lofgren was there.
To say that I didn’t fit in with the crowd was an understatement.
The wife wants to move up there full time, we are looking at North Kingston and Narraganset…better schools and more “normal”.
Big fan of Rhody but would prefer to be closer to Beantown.

Awesome.
I like south county. But I don’t think I could handle the RI taxes.
I just moved to a town that’s halfway between Boston and Providence. On the commuter rail and highway to both cities, walk from anywhere to a 350 acre lake, top public schools, and the MA flat tax.
The only downside I see is not great beach access. Probably 45 mins to south shore and the start of the cape being as close as you get. But that’s why they make cape houses anyway, amiright?

IMO
Most opinions should be respected. Part of the problem with the internet is that it reflects-and accelerates-the decline of respect for others that has become so pervasive throughout society.
OK I am getting off my soapbox-and headed to watch a baseball game in 100+ degree weather.
Ok, I think I've figured out a solution to all of this business
We pick a day, everyone goes out and buys their favorite booze (rambler, you can whip up a batch of corn moonshine or whatever the hell it is you drink), someone starts a BSD After Dark thread and we drinkblog till someone pukes or passes out. In my experience, we’ll have some laughs, tell some stories, post some funny pictures, engage is some possible shenanigans, and all end up friends.
There’s no way this doesnt work.
I'm on the Internet cause I'm an Internet thug.
Sounds like a plan.
