Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Remember Big Ten Division Still Must Go!!!

Without a doubt the Big Ten front office is sitting slight hoping that all the fans and all the media forget about the debacle that unfolded after last year around the division names and focus on something else (like NCAA violations).

Well, I don't know about you but time is not something that will heal what is wrong with "Legends and Leaders."  It's not innovative, it's a mockery.  I urge all to not forget how much we collectively hated this idea.  Once the 2011 season approaches let them hear it again.  The Big Ten tried to be unique and came off pompous and arrogant.  They avoided the expected geographical organization because it wasn't perfect.  NEWSFLASH!!!  The Dallas Cowboys are in the NFC East and tell me who cares?  Furthermore, the new PAC 12 alignment has Stanford in the North division while... wait for it... Utah and Colorado (I'm pretty certain are further North than Palo Alto) are further North.  Most people probably didn't even notice and why, because it's not a big deal.  No one is talking about it.  Everyone is too busy talking about how stupid the Big Ten division names are.

Get the petitions out!! I was born and raised in Big Ten country, I'm an alum of Penn State, I love my conference, and I refuse to be the laughing stock of the college football landscape.

Find me 2 better division names

Geography would be messed up, pick 2 coaches from the Big Ten history and you’re screwing many others, I’ve seen alpha/omega and that would be neat, but really, Legends and Leaders might’ve been the best we had.

Realistically: Stagg and Berwanger . Two Big Ten legends that were associated with U. Chicago — so you aren’t offending or highlighting any particular current school.

Other than that, I haven’t really seen any suggestion that is better than Legends and Leaders, really. Most other ideas are just are silly or just as nonsensical or would be specific to certain schools (and offend others) as you’ve mentioned.

by misdreavus79 on Jul 9, 2011 1:02 PM EDT reply actions

I think the names are dumb, but I think the persistent whining people have about them is even dumber. Given the setup of the divisions, there are no names that would be ideal so it just comes down to personal preference.

by Laaaaazzz on Jul 9, 2011 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

No, absolutely not.

They’re not so bad in geographic terms as to make East and West totally impossible. The names are a total joke, and people should complain and even whine about them.

Who gives a crap?

Their stupid names to replace what would have been geographic names that wouldn’t have made total sense (East/West). I’m not a fan of them either, but it’s a freakin’ division name, it’s not like it’s going to be held against us in the polls.

East/West

IMO that would have made the most sense-with the schools placed accordingly. Only one drawback-The Land Grant Trophy would still be an annual occurrence. As for crossover games: PSU-Nebraska, OSU-Wisconsin, Michigan-Minnesota, Michigan State-Iowa, Purdue-Illinois and Indiana-Northwestern would have worked.

by nits4ever on Jul 10, 2011 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

A pure East/West split would have been the idea setup and I’m pissed they didn’t go with that. Once they decided to screw things up by separating the schools in an irregular fashion, pretty much any division names they used were going to suck in some way.

by Laaaaazzz on Jul 11, 2011 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, we're taking suggestions for the BIG

Not the Pac 12… not sure why one would put Oregon and USC in a division by themselves though… Oh! You must mean the Big East! But they’re all losers… hm… the SEC? Yeah I could see that working.

But Legends and Leaders? Why don’t we just call ourselves the Big Fop Conference? I’m convinced Ohio State and Michigan came up with all of this.

To be fair, Legends and Leaders sounds exactly like the type of name that PSU’s PR department would come up with. I mean, it would fit in with “Success with Honor”. (Not that I’m knocking how PSU promotes itself, but I could easily see them talking about being a school that is “legendary” and “leads” too.)

They are exactly like

the Oakland Athletics or the New York Knickerbockers. No one refers to The A’s as the “Athletics” and no one refers to the Knickerbockers as anything but the “Knicks”. By the end of this season everyone will be referring to East and West and in a few years some smartass in a bar will say, “Don’t you mean the ‘Leaders’ division”? and everyone will then remember that Leaders and Legends are the real names and after a shrug they’ll kick the crap out of the smartass and then have another beer,

the only thing I don't like

Are the smug fans from other conferences. “Are you in the leaders or the legends” and laughing like ‘who cares and who would want to be in either of them’. I hate it.

Division 1 and 2 or A and B is fine with me.

It really should be “Penn State’s Division” and “The other division”.

I have trouble remembering what division we're in.

Pretty much the only way I determined it was: 1) We should be in Legends because Joe Paterno is a legend and 2) this is the Big Ten we’re talking about, so of course we’re in the opposite division than what I thought we should be, ergo we are in the Leaders division.

I liked

the X and O division names that the B1G initially came out with anyway. I say just go back to those.

by dbl5030 on Jul 11, 2011 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

How about..

The SEC Sux Divison and the tO$U SuxDivision? The only challenge would be getting schools to pick with division they’d be in since everyone would want to be in both divisions (even tO$U would want to be in the tO$U Sux Division since by this point even they know how much they suck). Maybe we should just change from the B1G to the SEC and tOSU Sux Conference.
