Glenn Carson Forces Change Of Plans At MLB
From Sean Fitz at Lions 247 (head over there for the full story):
Now flanked by Mauti and Gerald Hodges on the outside and backed up by sophomore Khairi Fortt, Carson said that the talent level is overflowing at linebacker.
"You good things from everyone, you see good things even from the guys you don't hear about much, like Mike Hull and Fortt. Everyone is good, man. There's so much good linebacker play here now and there's so much depth, and it's not a bad thing, it's a great thing."

Oh goodness me
I’m licking my chops. Mauti, Fortt, Stupar and Hodges all looked very good last year. Now Carson is showing that he’s the best option at ILB and Mike Hull is a beast in waiting?
Let’s just run a 1-6-4 with Still at NT.

How is the Hull-stache doing? I saw he got some solo tackles in his preseason game
I doubt if anyone watched it though (I didn’t, just checked the stats for all the PSU players)
"Hey Joe, don't worry about the guys we lose. Only make sure the guys you bring in here belong here, and they're coming here for the right reasons." - Rip Engle to Joe Paterno
Believe it or not
I actually caught this late the other night on NFL Network. Laurinitis was held out with an injury, and Hull started for him in the middle. Hull played a good portion of the first half and looked really good. The announcers noted how much the coaching staff likes him and suggested that he’s got a good shot to make the team as the reserve MLB.
Wasn't he set to beat out Laura last year before the ACL tear?
"Hey Joe, don't worry about the guys we lose. Only make sure the guys you bring in here belong here, and they're coming here for the right reasons." - Rip Engle to Joe Paterno
Not sure. I know he was doing well.
The politics of money undoubtedly plays a role, given their respective draft positions. I hear varying reports on the team’s satisfaction with Laurinitis’ play, and I can’t say I’ve watched many St. Louis Rams games over the last couple years, so I’m not sure where he stands.
In related news, Laura
just got 25 more tackle assists and 17 solo tackles.

Yes
Though I believe that was also b/c of injury. I think I heard the announcers say he was going to get a shot to play nickel, which still means a lot of playing time in the NFL these days. I was not as impressed with what I saw of him as I was with Hull.
Hull and Hodges too...

But here's the thing:
How often do soccer guys look like they’re, um, how should I put this, doing it the Royal Navy way (Rum, the lash, and that other thing)? Not that often. They just look like sissies kicking a ball around all sissy like. That’s not even close to wrestlers, who are true men and if you keep dissing them, then our national champion wrestlers are all going to make you pant like a dog while taking you down incessantly before eventually ending your misery with a technical fall.

I wrestled when I was younger, and my brother was a pretty good wrestler in HS. I grew up in Cambria County, remember…I have nothing but respect for wrestlers, and I learned a lot about discipline when I used to sleep over at the Strittmatter’s house and see the older brothers coming back from 5 mile runs at 8 am in July. Yes, those Strittmatters.
I also played soccer. The beginning of this conversation was less “soccer is better than wrestling” and more “soccer and wrestling are both unfairly disrespected.” If you read back through, you’ll see that the only insults or slights levied in this exchange have been by you, against soccer.
"We gon' get down. We gon' do the do. I'm going to hit these mother****ers" - Dock Ellis, May 1, 1974.
One insult, friendo:
They just look like sissies kicking a ball around all sissy like.
This is less an insult than it is an imitation of what most Americans think when we see the World Cup or whatever after watching some football players playing their collision sport.
And, anyway, wrestling is better than any other sport. Not an insult, a fact. I’m done. Dick Winters’ favorite sport. I win.

I like the idea of a stand-up defensive end and I, frankly, hope this leads to that result. Stupar could quite possibly excel there. And, really, it makes sense – we’ve got weak depth up front but literally (literally!) tons of depth in the linebacking corps.

Sorry guys
can’t say I’m enthused about the whole SUDE concept. I think it never clicked with Timmy Shaw when we tried it. I would much rather see some of the younger true DEs like Stanley, Baublitz, and one or two of the true frosh step up answer the call and play like men, with their hands on the ground. It is nice to have an experienced talent like Stupar (who was a HS DE for the Little Lions) available as a band-aid, but I am hoping we can generate a pass rush with the guys belong on the defensive line.
I think a standard front 4 is what most people want
but if they cant find a pass rusher there, this is the next best thing. And I thought TIm Shaw was pretty solid in the role, though I don’t think he’s as good a pass rusher as Stupar could be.

I loved the guy. I just didn’t like the scheme. He performed admirably given what the staff asked of him.
The best players will be on the field
If 2 of the DE crew get their shit together, they’ll be on the field.
But in any event, it’ll be nice to have depth. If DE’s are looking strong, they’ll play. If not, or even if so, we’ll have Stupar that COULD play SUDE. Stupar could also get run at OLB and definitely wreck havoc on special teams. Carson and Fortt can play in the middle, and there are like 12 guys that can play OLB. Who knows how it shakes out, but at least we aren’t going to have to settle for warm bodies anywhere. Good players will be on the field.

I was racing my friend (why? Richardson's 7-10 yard runs last year
are more likely to be 3-4 yard runs this year. That, in and of itself, will make life harder for the QB, as he’ll have to actually convert a 3rd down or two. Plus I have hope that Stupar can bring more heat across from Crawford/Lattimore than we could by just having both on the field every down.

Yes, cosigned
Two primary reasons I believe this?:
1. Devon Still is better
2. Not Colasanti
(I just took a vow that that will be my last/most negative remark about the outgoing outstanding scholar athlete)

I was reading the Indy Colts blog the other day and they commented that Colasanti was a great tackler. I assume they didn’t watch much PSU football last year.

Hey, in all seriousness and fairness
And with Josh Freakin Hull as an example, Chris Colasanti may have been one year away from being way better than average. The redshirt he was forced to burn may have done him in.

At the same time, him missing this year may be better for us
Nothing against Chris, just that these guys have a higher ceiling than him, and don’t tackle so high as Chris did.
Chris would’ve been a pretty good starter at a place like Rutgers, just not here

Impossible
I heard he’s routinely putting up 39 reps of 900 on the bench. Last week he cracked a bowling ball between his forearm and biceps.

I'd like to have two Armies -- one for display, with lovely guns, tanks, little Soldiers, staffs, distinguished and doddering Generals and dear little regimental officers, who would be deeply concerned over their General's bowel movements or their Colonel's piles; an Army that would be shown for a modest fee on every fairground in the country.
The other would be the REAL ONE, composed entirely of young enthusiasts in camouflage uniforms, who would not be put on display but from whom impossible efforts would be demanded and to whom all sorts of tricks would be taught. That's the Army in which I should like to fight.

Very excited for this linebacking corps
I was a little worried about depth, since Mauti and Stupar were the only really sure things, and Hodges and Fortt were showing potential. Other than that it was a bunch of question marks. If we can get Carson manning the middle, then it seems like we’ve got a solid 2 deep to play around with.
I will miss the phrase “Mauti in the middle” though.

So barring injuries..
we could be looking at the best LB corps in the nation?
Who had the best LB’s last year?
Last year? Alabama or Boston College
This year, Bama’s are getting anointed as the best LB’s

really?
Who else do they have besides that Hightower guy?
by Artiefufkin10 on Aug 17, 2011 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Courtney Upshaw is being looked at as an NFL caliber 34 LB
He had 7.5 sacks last year. Not superior in any area, not bad in any area, he’s the pass rusher
Nico Johnson is an all world recruit who saw time last year @ MLB, and recorded 7 starts. He also started 3 as a true freshman
CJ mosley started as a true frosh @ SLB, and is more of a 43 OLB LB type.
They’re all super recruits (As are our guys too fwiw)
The majority of the tacklers return, and all of the starters return

Uh, LB Starters
10/11 D starters return
thing is is that they lost the #3 pick in the draft. And 34 DE in the 34 is arguably the most important there.
I’m sure Marcell Dareus sounds familiar

A painful memory, but I had to make it green.
Was any Penn State outside linebacker in recent memory caught up inside more frequently than Bhani?
I SAW THAT

Interesting
that Fortt is now the back-up in the middle, which I assume means that Hull will be playing outside? I was expecting that it might be the reverse. Anyone out there have insight into how permanent an arrangement this might be?
This is a little weird, but also makes a little sense
And I’m starting to get behind it. For these reasons:
1. Like others have mentioned, Vandy & Scrap coaching the LBs are the least questionable of all our coaches doing their coaching. They wouldn’t mess around like this if Carson weren’t earning it.
2. Mauti is injury-prone. This gets him out where there is more flexible depth behind/beside him
3. Nautical Mauti is a high-energy pursuit guy. Very well may better serve us on the outside.
I remember last year we had some wicked depth we were excited about. It wasn’t long, tho, that first injuries crushed that, and then later we were wishing for more healthy depth to replace the shoddy play of the SRs on the corps. This could be, partially (and by huuge stretches of my own imagination), a result of the coaching lessons learned from that.

Kinda thinking the same thing
If Carson can go in the middle now, why not get 3 years out of your MLB where you might have less depth and move the 2 year starter to outside where theres more.

We didn't really have a "White Out" in 2002
I think people overestimate the visibility of 4 red shirts together in a section of 10,000 white shirts. I mean, on wide-angle crowd shots, you can barely see anything buy white unless there’s a significant presence, like in the actual away crowd seats. Otherwise, if you have maybe 2,000 red shirts spread throughout the other 103,000 seats, you have to squint to even notice any difference.

plus, the fact that the "visitor's section" is only the upper deck now
can only help the aesthetics.

Aesthetics would have been
even more improved had they stuck the entire visitors section under the upper deck overhang.

We’ve heard plenty of players say things like this:

But this may be the first time I remember hearing a player say this:
