James English: Iron Sharpens Iron
Here's an interview with Penn State wrestler James English, who is in the middle of a mat room battle royale with Dylan Alton & James Vollrath for the 157 pound starting position. He talks about the frustrations of not starting when he believes he could have been an All-American at Frank Molinaro's 149 pound weight last year, but also explains why that competition is the very reason he chose Penn State. He has some nice input into the different training styles of former Coach Troy Sunderland, who recruited him, and current coach Cael Sanderson and he, of course, also talks about how much fun he's having. Enjoy:

Not sure how many times I'm gonna allow myself to get burned
By the uncooperative SBN embed tool. All looks good in the previews, then after post the vid disappears. Oh well. Click on the Via link to watch.

Thanks for the linkage jtot
Love the attitude and the inside look at Cael’s practice routine.
His potential AA at 149 comment sent me back to look at his results. I forgot he finished 3rd at the Nittany Liion Open, behind Mason and Molinaro, then 7th at the Southern Scuffle following a tough 4-0 loss to Dake in round 1.
Should be an interesting battle at 157 with Vollrath, who finished 3rd at 157 in the Southern Scuffle behind DT and Paul Young.

You think it's a 1-2 race between him & Vollrath?
What about Dylan? Board rumors out of the room insist they’re all in a dead heat—and all three capable of AA? I dunno, just can’t wait to see/read about these wrestle-offs in a few months. I also forgot about that pretty close loss to Dake at the Scuffle. I remember Vollrath battling back and winning like 7 or 9 in a row to get that 3rd place, tho. Also remember Ruuuth coming on the scene at that tourney, making mince of both Lewnes & Henrich.
Yeah, I eat it up every time Sanderson or one of the wrestlers talks about ‘having fun’. It’s so counter-intuitive to the FIGHT-INTENSE mentality I grew up hearing in wrestling rooms and reading about with past champions. But it’s just got to be necessary in a lifestyle so mentally grueling otherwise. I also dig this strategy I’ve read about a bunch on Sanderson’s website about the best training equals actual wrestling. Which English confirmed they do differently now than they did under Sunderland.
In any event, dude looks & sounds pretty damn ready in the interview. Can’t wait to see him more on the mat.

Three guys intently batting for one spot has got to be a huge advantage when the season comes along. May the best wrestler win.
Oh yeah, definitely Ruth’s coming out party for those of us on the outside looking in.
Not to knock Sutherland but Cael’s attention to detail and intense involvement with the wrestlers seems to be the difference between being good and being great.

When I’m a rasslin coach, I’m going to tell my athletes, “You will have fun by murdering the enemy. Wade into him. Spill his guts. Lubricate your single leg attacks with his blood.”

I wouldn't tell them to "Wade into him"
they might mistakenly take on Cameron Wade’s offensive strategy and start a snoozefest.
Dude.
Wade’s just the same as every other heavyweight. “Cut me some slack, Jack!”

You're right
Low blow on my part. I guess I’m just expressing my discontent with that whole weight class – it has been unfairly directed at Cam.
I can understand.
What I wouldn’t give to be able to watch a guy like Stephen Neal again.

Wade
injured his shoulder early in the season (Va duals?) and I don’t think he fully recovered from it. I thought about this after it was finally reported that Ruth was injured late in the season. Injuries aren’t reported for strategic reasons but one tell is a defensive style when they were previously aggressive. Don’t give up on Wade; he is still a top ten wrestler.

The absence of Andrew Long’s points (while not yet guaranteed an absence, granted) sure does make the task of holding off the hawks and pokes a lot tougher. We could sure use a little help from our Wade.

Don't worry about the pokes.
They’re pussies. I don’t care that they’d all tear me to pieces in a wrestling match, I don’t care about their national championships and champions, I don’t care about any of that, Gable was right to tell Tom Brands to entertain the fans by imitating poke-style fleeing the mat.
Remember: Oklahoma State doesn’t stall for periods, they stall for entire seasons.
I hate Oklahoma State wrestling so much. I refuse to believe they’re capable of anything because I hate them so much. They’re like Iowa, but without the class or the inferiority complex. They’re probably not even smart enough to have an inferiority complex out there. I’m so glad Uncle Merle was born in California instead of some place in Oklahoma that’s within even a three hour car ride of Stillwater.

Iron Sharpens Iron
Perfect phasing for wrestling.

That's Ironic
because a slightly similar caption was used in the USA Today High School Football Preview. In reference to NJ superpower Don Bosco Prep, the bold print read “Iron sharpens Ironmen” . . . oh and . . . ihrn city is a terrible beer.
