Irene is a blowhard
So I know there are some people on here that live in the Norfolk/Virginia area and since this is my first major hurricane I was wondering; should I get the hell out of dodge? I was just planning on riding this thing out, but now it looks like I'll almost be in the main path. Advice on staying or going? Or what I should do if I do stay? I was hoping a case of beer and some hard liquor was going to get me through this.

If you're near the coast
I’d GTFO. Especially if you’re in the Norfolk, VA Beach area. Once those tunnels and bridges get closed, you’ve got nowhere to go in case things start getting dicey.
Weather is still warm, so grab a tent and some gear and just go camping in the mountains to the west for a few days. No need to act like a New Orleans knucklehead and end up floating down the street on a Rubbermaid container.
But that’s just me. I’m not too keen on hanging out in my house, and I’m in Richmond. But that has more to do with the dozens of very large, very heavy trees that could come crashing down on my house at some point this weekend.

I've been through many hurricanes
Category 3+ is nothing you want to mess with.
If it actually somehow does become a Cat 4 or Cat 5, I might recommend bailing and fleeing for the hills (but do it early, as the last minute rush is always chaos). If you feel comfortable in the stability of your house, board it up and hunker down. Gather some clean drinking water, some food that doesn’t need to be cooked and flashlights/candles.
Personally, riding out a hurricane sounds like it would be really kick ass
Really, really fun. Given, I’ve never done it

Falling out of an airplane without a parachute and living to tell about it would be really kickass too.
That doesn’t mean I want to try it…

Based on the weather blogs
Looks like storm surge is going to be a major issue, even more than the wind and rain. Not only coastline but apparently freshwater flooding is going to be a big problem too. Flooding is something you can’t ride out. I’m not an expert, but better safe than sorry are words to live by.
I only know this because I was supposed to go down to the outer banks this weekend for a week. Irene is fucking up my week.

Anyway, the flashlights eat our human power grids, our souls if you will. So i destroyed them, and if a few precious panties were burnt or soiled in the reckoning then so be it
Flooding is my biggest concern
But I dont think anything other than the basement of my place will get flooded. And I can park my car in the city parking structures for free. I mean, I dont have any medical issues or anything that I would need to be rescued and couldn’t because of the flooding. And the water would have to be about 6 feet deep before it would flood my place and I would be stuck. I think it would be kinda cool to ride it out, but right now I’m leaning toward blowing town. Though I’m headed for DC which is supposed to get hit pretty hard too. I’ll check the progress tomorrow morning and then make my decision, but I’m thinking I’m leaving town for the weekend. I’m sure as hell still gonna drink through this hurricane though. I do have principles.

I live on high ground but have lots of trees, they are predicting sustained winds of 50mph in the Poconons so I have some concern about that
We will have lots of flash floods which will close back roads. I am not going to complain if I lose my power, they are many, many more people who will have bigger problems than me.
Since I have lived here (6 years) I have seen Shawnee on Delaware under water, and Route 80 through the Delaware Water Gap flooded. It is never total devastation, but enough to cause major issues and cost big $$$ to clean up.
Stay safe everyone. Use common sense. If there is an official evacuation, listen to the people who know what they are doing (such as they are these days).

I'm staying put
My area in NJ is under a mandatory evacuation starting at 8am Friday morning. And almost no one I know is leaving. We plan to hurricane party our butts off before it gets here then sleep through the worst of it. Or we may just keep partying.

I lived in VA Beach for 6 years
And Gloria of 85 was the worst thing that hit. It tore down the 17th St pier, but I think that was the worst of the damage. We just went to a local HS for the night. There wasn’t a mandatory evacuation, though.
My sister was there for Isabel (I think) and she was stuck without power and transportation for at least a week, it seems. Her apartment and car were flooded and she had to rely on my parents bringing up supplies from Raleigh and FEMA. I know a lot of refugees from Katrina, as well.
I’d GTFO and go to somewhere in the Blue Ridge part of the state if I were you. Living without power sucks no matter how prepared you are. I wouldn’t stay anywhere in the Tidewater region if I were you.

If you need a place to crash for a few days
I’d be more than happy to open up my home for you. We’re gonna get hit w/ rain still, but it shouldn’t be as bad as the coasts are getting it.

Pretty nuts here in Hoboken. Apparently 80% of the town ends up underwater
if we get hit with even a Category 1 storm.
Like you, I’m a bit skeptical, but everyone I know here is leaving, so I’m headed back to my parents’ house inland in Jersey to ride it out. What really weirded me out was the City’s decision to close down mass transportation. It they’re concerned, then I think it’s reasonable to be concerned. I’d leave.
It ain't safe in the city, watch the throne
It looks like it still might be a category 3 when it hits VA
Good luck and stay safe to all those who might be affected by the storm.

this.
In most situations like this (especially since Katrina), they’re not all talking just to hear themselves talk.

If you stay, drink a case of beer and several bottles of wiskey. Then when you die, you won’t feel anything.
Get the hell out while you can. No need for any Coast Guarder’s or Firemen to risk their lives to come and get you after you figure out you’re in over your head (literally).

looks like Norfolk is going to get a direct hit. I still want to go all Lieutenant Dan on a hurricane one of these days. maybe another time.

I am glad you left.
There are just too many cases where people stay behind, only necessitating being rescued later. I used to think that it would be “fun” to ride out a hurricane. I have seen the awsomeness of their power and destruction and want no part of them at all.
