Which Freshman/RS Freshman Will See Quality Action in 2011?
Lions247 ran a couple of great posts in the past week, with Fitz outlining five freshmen ($) and redshirt freshmen ($) he thought would have the best chance to see some quality playing time. Now let's hear from you. Pick a freshman and/or redshirt freshman and tell us why you think he'll see some quality PT.
Some are easy guesses...
- Freshman Sam Ficken is the only kicker on scholarship and not in the Paterno Doghouse, though that might not even be enough for him to see the field.
- Redshirt freshman Mike Hull is the second string Fritz linebacker behind Gerald Hodges is what should be a very solid linebacking unit.
Others aren't as easy to predict. You'd be surprised to learn one of the true freshmen many insiders project to see the field early. In case you've forgotten, here are your choices:
Freshmen (15)
- Anthony Alosi (OL)
- Adrian Amos (CB)
- Deion Barnes (DE)
- Bill Belton (WR)
- Kyle Carter (TE)
- Sam Ficken (K)
- Jordan Kerner (DE)
- Ben Kline (LB)
- Angelo Mangiro (OL)
- Ryan Nowicki (OL)
- Shawn Oakman (DE)
- Allen Robinson (WR)
- Donovan Smith (OL)
- Matt Zanellato (WR)
- Anthony Zettel (DT)
Redshirt Freshmen (11)
- Brad Bars (LB/DE)
- Kyle Baublitz (DE)
- Miles Dieffenbach (C)
- Luke Graham (DT)
- Evan Hailes (DT)
- Mike Hull (LB)
- Paul Jones (QB)
- Alex Kenney (CB)
- Khamrone Kolb (OL)
- C.J. Olaniyan (DE)
- Zach Zwinak (FB)

I expect (hope?) for several RS frosh
to see sufficient time against ISU, Temple and Directional Michigan East to get their sea legs and earn enough trust from the coaches where they get a handful of meaningful snaps in conference games. At the top of that list would be Hull, Baublitz, and Olaniyan, but maybe Hailes as well. I get the feeling like Alex Kenney will gets some snaps at DB against the non-Alabama non-conf opponents. It’s probably wishful thinking to expect him to get much time as a kickoff returner.
The true freshmen are anyone’s guess, even the experts. I had been hearing some good things about Zettel at DT and Donovan Smith, but unless a couple of these guys are world beaters, any significant playing time means somebody is slacking off or got hurt.

I hope it's not...

He’s a speed demon with quick feet (thanks, track background), which is exactly what you want in a punt returner. I’d love to see him back there for a little bit during ISU and beyond if he’s even somewhat competent.

Most of my skepticism here
stems from Joe’s reluctance to let DWill or Justin King get a crack at returning punts or kicks their freshman year. I mean, if he’s too cautious not to put those two back there early on…
Granted, they were true frosh and not RS like Kenney, but I see him sticking with the upper classmen. I sincerely hope I’m wrong. I can see an opening on the kick return team if they decide they don’t want one of the starting corners bringing back kickoffs.

Smith is good on punt returns
but a little too small (ok, WAY too small) for kickoff duties. Morris may be a viable option, along with Green (assuming he’s out of the doghouse soon).
Donovan Smith
because he seems like a nice, cool dude.
And, Mike Hull because he’s a legacy and should be a beast.
Fire Dan Snyder
Amos & Baulblitz will
And judging from the reports coming out of camp I sure as hell hope we RS Donovan Smith. No point on having him be a backup this year.

All of them!
We are going to be blowing out so many teams that the waterboys will get a chance to play! ( Actually I hope as many as possible since there will be some losses to graduation this year – WR, DL , DBs – and we’re going to need experience if next year is going to be successful.)

Based on the lack of depth on the DL,
combined with the number of DL prospects on the above list, I’m guessing we see a healthy dose of them.
