Big Ten Bloggers Pick'em & Thursday Night Football Open Thread: Week 1
Don't know about you, but I love Thursday night college football. It gets even better once the conference season starts to kick in. But even with not-so-epic games, it's still good. So what we're going to do each Thursday night is post our Big Ten Bloggers Pick'em entry (explanation below), but also make this into a fun Thursday Night Football Open Thread. Sound good? So let the chatter roll!

Some of the old-hat readers here will remember way back in the day when the Big Ten Bloggers were really cooking with gas. We used to have annual preview roundtables, weekly collaborations, and of course the Big Ten Bloggers Pick'em. Well, the only surviving one of those is the pick'em, graciously kept alive by The Daily Gopher.
And since I like doing it so much, you'll get to see us feebly pick each Big Ten football game this season. The standings will be posted at TDG each week, while we'll keep our own internal BSD standings for fun. I hope you enjoy, and definitely give us your own picks in the comments!
Galen was in charge of these back at LBU, where he did it all fancy-like. He'll likely take the reigns here in the next few weeks. They'll look much better when he's in charge.

From duds to
duuuuuuuuddddes.
I'd like to have two Armies -- one for display, with lovely guns, tanks, little Soldiers, staffs, distinguished and doddering Generals and dear little regimental officers, who would be deeply concerned over their General's bowel movements or their Colonel's piles; an Army that would be shown for a modest fee on every fairground in the country.
The other would be the REAL ONE, composed entirely of young enthusiasts in camouflage uniforms, who would not be put on display but from whom impossible efforts would be demanded and to whom all sorts of tricks would be taught. That's the Army in which I should like to fight.
Who is that?

Remember
the days when you got a quart of Schlitz Malt and a bag of Middleswarth for $2.00 at the Train Yard Bottle Shop. Made the walk back to North easier.
*
We used to get a 3 pack of Old Milwaukee 16oz for a buck, or, a 6 of Schlitz Malt Liquor 7oz for $2 in downtown Reading, PA. (1977)
Of course, we could get a case of Rolling Rock 7oz at the Rathskeller for $7 in 1982. An opener was $1.00. The beer was a better deal.

but it is making me feel differently about this team

being a DC is a huge handicap in this game. When I was with Temple, every game felt like the 6-4 game against Iowa. I’d give up maybe a touchdown a game, and the offense would do nothing to help.

if the third sting is in let them play, they may not have many opportunities to score.
Don’t keep in the starters in until the end and run it up.

Seriously considering going to the Alabama game. Pros: I have a free place to stay with Row73fan, have lots of BSD tailgates to visit, know quite a few Alabama fans from here who are going and I’d love to show them Happy Valley. Cons: no ticket, it’s a 15 hour drive each way. I have a place to break up the trip on the way there, but not on the way back.
So many of my BSD friends are encouraging me to come (YAY peer pressure), and my mom is telling me it’s not worth it. Dad is noncommittal.
What should I do? Biggest limiting factor is the long drive.

Thoughts on Wisconsin / UNLV
—Wisconsin’s defense is garbage
—Russell Wilson is who I thought he was. Athletic enough and a good enough QB that against a crap defense, will light them the f*** up. Makes too many bad throws to get it done against the Penn States, Ohio States, and Nebraskas of the world
—Evaluating Wisconsin’s offense isn’t all that fair at this point. UNLV might have a significantly worse defense than Indiana State, and I’m not exaggerating. That being said, they can get it done easily against a bad defense, and there’s something to be said for that.
—UNLV covered. I TOLD YOU SO

Picked UNLV.
Wilson- add that he can’t throw the deep ball. In his best two game stretch last year, his long completion was something like 35 yards.

His release on anything >20 yds looks very awkward
Against UNLV, who cares. Against Lynn and Co., he’s screwed

He threw, I want to say, 530 passes last year?
2 completions of 50 yards or more (I think 50 and 60, off the top of my head).

He is the product of a strange genetic experiment
between mediocre Matt McGloin and Denard Robinson with a better physique, with an awkward deep ball

Switching gears here,
are Sycamores fans on a message board really talking about the possibility they we will be "looking past them’? And so they can win? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

Indiana State has a handful of talented dudes
but let me put it how I put it to my OSU fan wife asking about Akron: make an all-star team out of UNLV and Indiana State, you have Akron, and OSU should win by at least 20

I'm sure they do.
But the problem is obviously the dropoff after them. I love school pride too. But think about how much this team would have to underperform to lose? I’m thinking our players would have to make a “no running” rule that only applies to us. Even then, I don’t know.

2010 Indiana State was 1AA 2010 Michigan
no running would not be a problem

Won by 17
but the scoreboard doesn’t tell the story. It wasn’t that close.

Don’t understand all the luve for Whisky. And what’s the story with Russell anyway? Was he any good at NCState?

He was the lone sign of life on a terrible team
and sometimes played well, sometimes played miserably.
I’ve posted the stats before that from Oct 30-Nov 30 of last year, he came nowhere close to being Matt McGloin. McGloin almost certain had more to work with. Wilson was much more experienced, and those stats didn’t include some of his worst games.
Overall, the guy has good athletic ability and doesn’t make too many bad decisions. He also makes a lot of really bad throws and isn’t as athletic as he’s played up to be. With better people around him, his numbers should be better, but I don’t see him as enough of a difference maker to beat PSU or OSU without a lot of help

I don't know about his numbers.
Wisco isn’t going to let him sling it 45 times a game. But I think he will perform better with this line and skill players. I just don’t see the 4000 yards and 40 tds (total on both).

When I said "numbers"
I meant completion%, TD/att, INT/ att, and win%, not necessarily raw number totals.

so why did he leave NCState?
and why is he allowed to play this year?
by Mr. Rosewater on Sep 2, 2011 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions
He's also a baseball player. He got drafted by some team in MLB.
Went and played minor league ball, I think. Missed spring football practice and he had already graduated, so the NC State coach didn’t want him to come back. He still has a year of eligibility left, so he went shopping. He was looking at Auburn for awhile, but Wiscy has a more experienced OL.

You're welcome!
From what I can tell, he’s a decent kid. There was no scandal attached to him leaving (My parents live near NC State and my mom plays bridge at their University Club, so I think they would have heard if there was something there).

Some slut spammer just started following me on twitter,
by slut, I mean I think she’s a pro virus wielder on twitter (e.g., “Am I pretty, look at me – click here” and “hey sexy I have a crush on you – click here.” Can you say spam?

Northwestern loses to Boston College but everyone else wins.
Northwestern always has a WTF loss sometime in the year (last year’s was to Purdue, the year before that it was to Syracuse, year before that it was to Indiana, year before that it was to Duke, and the year before that they were blown out by New Hampshire, you get the picture), but they also have a great win (usually Iowa, but sometimes someone else, too) that almost always happens in conference.
Oops, forgot about the USC game, of course Minnesota loses to them.
I officially change my prediction to 10-2 for the conference.
