I should be upset...

But I think Bolden just became the starter and PSU will end up losing 1 or 2 more games at the most. They’ll be okay.

This

I’m ok with losing to a team that is better than we are. And I think the QB controversy can finally be put to bed.

Lets look at the positives

The defense can be stifling. Their is no one on our schedule we can’t compete with. If the offense finds an identity this team can be downright dangerous. The schedule in the short term is manageable.

See, the problem with this line of thought is

That Paterno has accomplished a lot. And the past sometimes holds more weight than the present of future.

I am by no means saying Paterno should go, but let’s face it: It’s going to take “the dark years 2.0” [unlikely], another national championship [highly unlikely] or Paterno’s death for him to retire.

by whiteoutonly on Sep 10, 2011 7:58 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Hate to say it

but I agree. He just doesn’t seem to be a natural football player. Doesn’t have hands…does a great job of getting behind DB’s, but that’s useless unless you can make a play.

I'd just run him deep every play in hopes of clearing out the safeties

But yeah, he’s not that great. Neither was Kersey.

The entire complexion of the game changes if he makes that play.

I agree with you both. I appreciate how fast he is, but let’s be honest, just being fast doesn’t mean anything. He isn’t big enough to do anything in the passing game and he struggles in the return game. Not much left for him to do.

by GMac14 on Sep 10, 2011 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely.

The game changes if we score an actual damn touch down on the opening drive. He catches that ball and he probably out runs that DB.

However, I’ve never seen Smith make a play like that, because he can’t hang onto the ball.

Pretty disappointed in Moye today

If you want to be considered a big time receiver and an all conference player, you can’t drop passes. You have to make plays. I know he had the 1 handed catch, but he also dropped another deep ball and let another one go right through his hands. Our offense does not have a playmaker at the receiver position if he is just another average guy.

by GMac14 on Sep 10, 2011 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

I cut him some slack on his overall production today..

he’s playing a great secondary so that explains the lack of receptions.

But he missed out on making some really nice plays.

by Artiefufkin10 on Sep 10, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that it was as tough a secondary as they will face all year

but if he’s a top 10 receiver in the nation, he has to make a few of those plays. That’s what big time guys do. They make the tough plays and not just the easy ones. And with the team struggling to move the ball, those are balls he has to come up with.

by GMac14 on Sep 10, 2011 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought once or twice that he “shortarmed it” and on the one interception, seemed like he could have at least tried to break it up before the DB got it.

However, he did draw double team a lot and that should have keyed the QB’s that something else was available.

Dissapointing to say the least. But, I don;t think we’ll face a better defense than Bama.

So far, Brown hasn’t shown he could be a go to guy. Drops too many. Kersey…may develop. Saw Drake in there a few plays, but he didn’t contribute at all.

Surprisingly, I'm not that upset.

I saw enough from Bolden and the the defense that I think this should develop into a good team. And we just found out that Iowa and OhioSt aren’t as good as we might have thought.

That said, Bolden needs to be named the starter NOW. That’s on the coaching staff to stop fiddle-farting around and make a decision.

I honestly don't think the receivers are as bad as people are saying

Bama has the nations top secondary and there were still some nice plays (Especially that one play by Moye). I don’t know who should start along side Moye and Brown, hopefully Drake keeps on getting healthier, or else I’d lean towards starting Allen Robinson

Also, on the OL, did Urschel ever come in?

If it was a matter

of them just not being open, I might agree. But they outright dropped several balls that hit them in the hands. That’s not something to blame on the defense.

by bubba0077 on Sep 10, 2011 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

But at the same time, drops can be worked on

I think we know what we’re getting with Moye, a great receiver that lacks sure hands. Same with Brown, but even then he’s still dropping less balls. But, would you rather have drops or have coverage sacks/some big ish QB runs sometimes? It’s a tough question, but I’m not too disappointed with them.

Observations..

The D is good, but needs to make more plays behind the line and force turnovers. When’s the last time the offense took over on the opponents 25?

The offense just isn’t good and can’t score on good to great defenses. Play one QB. I don’t care which one. Just pick one. Also, why did they treat the first drive like it is the final drive of the MNC game? It just seemed desperate.

PSU and the big 10 aren’t very good. PSU probably doesn’t lose another game until they play Nebraska and they might win that one.

D was great

ESPECIALLY considering some of the field position that ‘Bama started with and how crappy our O was. I am really proud of the Defense! Offense sucked. Neither QB was good…Bolden was better than McGloin, but Bolden was about a C-. Stared down some receivers, crappy timing on passes, ech! Our O line was great in the first series and then the ’Bama D shut down the lanes. I would have like to see Curtis Dukes get some touches because I think his size might have helped…or more Zordich/Suhey runs occasionally. The ’Bama D shut down the short slants and screens and neither Qb can throw a deep ball if their lives depended on it. The receivers too often had balls behind or whatever and Moye did miss a couple he should have had. At least the F’n kicking game was better. THE PSU DEFENSE IS EXCELLENT!!!!! Now I’m going to get drunk.

I’m not going to start jumping off a ledge because the team lost to one of the top teams in the nation. And I’m not going to scream gloom and doom…..but I’m really surprised by all of the feeling ok and seeming indifference to the loss around here.

We just got embarrassed on our home field. Again. The game wasn’t competitive. Again. At no point during the game other than the first few minutes of our first drive did I feel we could win. Again. It felt like the crowd was 40% Bama fans. I guess I’m just frustrated. And wonder when we’ll be able to not just beat, but at least be competitive with a top 5 team again.

Ok.

To clarify then, I thought we had a very good chance of winning until Alabama went up 17-3. That’s why the fumble was so devastating. Overcoming two scores against that defense is not something the vast, vast majority of offenses are capable of doing.

That fumble was crucial. We had a slight bit of momentum and that just turned it completely around. I believe he had that first down if he holds on to the ball.

by PaJoe on Sep 10, 2011 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately, the final core was embarrassing. If you watched the game, however, you saw some very good play by the Lions against a very, very good Bama defense.

While the defense played very well, I don’t recall Baba ever fumbling (even that they recovered) and our D-backs or Linebackers (I remember Hull once was in good position) rarely were in position to potentially intercept a pass.

We lost the field position game. Our special teams weren’t very “special”. Bama had the one punt return that went from inside the five to mid field..that was a backbreaker at the time. Most of our KO returns ended right near the 20, no zip.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.

by PaJoe on Sep 10, 2011 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Pa, our linebackers were IN POSITION

I think that particular complaint, with all due respect, is ignorant. Our pass defenders played as well as we could expect from them.

by ReadingRambler on Sep 10, 2011 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Other than the Hull breakup…where did you see the Linebackers getting their hands on a pass? Mauti was very slow on one play (can’t remember when it happened). I believe it was a tight end drag route over the middle. I will agree the Linebackers did play very well overall. And overall Mauti played well. I love our linebackers. I just didn’t think they did well in pass coverage.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.

by PaJoe on Sep 10, 2011 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

But how were they not good in pass coverage?

PaJoe, I’ve always liked you, but, with all due respect, you cite only one play. I recollect Mauti breaking up at least one pass. More importantly, I have no recollection whatsoever of Alabama’s tight ends being a large factor in the passing game. There was really only one bad play by the linebackers in pass coverage: Hodges whiffed on one key long Alabama pass.

It’s funny everyone complaining about the pass defense. I thought they were too aggressive early going for interceptions instead of just breaking up passes. Which led to a few completions.

The pass defense

has improved exponentially from last year. Consider the tipped passes we saw. LBs were often a half a step away from a pick. I actually noticed Jack Crawford. It was a good day for the D, despite the points that Alabama put up.

Alabama had the ball for about 34 minutes, which is 57% of the game. But, when you take into account that Penn State had the ball for the first half of the first quarter (before the defense saw the field) it’s sort of more like 65%, which is ridiculous.

I recall one play where their qb was forced to overthrow his guy in the end zone because Mauti was in position and forced the qb to throw too high to get over him. He never touched the ball but caused the incompletion.

I agree that was a horrible spot. And I don’t understand how that wasn’t at least reviewed. But my feeling is that was only 1 play. And it was in the 1st quarter. Good to great teams don’t let 1 play affect them.

Bama is a great team. They deserve to be ranked that high. But to blame that game on the spot of that ball isn’t fair either.

Brother, I'm not blaming it all on one play.

But football is called a game of inches for a reason. If we change that one play, then it is very much possible we would have had a vastly closer game.

We had the talent to play. Granted I’m excited about the season, but we got embarrassed. The definition shouldn’t be a sliding one because of who we play. And whether we were or not is not a function of the guys on the field alone.

Probably because the Defense isn't atrocious

I’ll be honest, there are some negatives I’m not bringing up. The play calling was worse than absolute ass. It was horriterriatrocinasty. It honestly was and we aren’t taking advantage of the talent we have. But that’s the key word, because the talent is there. Except on the OL

I don’t like to rip on the coaches, but that’s where we were really out classed today, but at the same time, coaching strategies can change. It’s not like were superiorly outclassed as a team, talent wise. We just need to get it together, and the schedule affords that opportunity to go a complete 360 by the time Nebraska comes around.

Because we have speed on them in the receiver vs secondary match up and we did not use that

Beyond Devon. So many short outs, if I was Kirby Smart I just leave me guys within the first 15 yards and have 11 guys cover 15 yards because we did not go deep enough. Also, not enough spread HD. To compound that was the OL, but we could have at least tried a toss out.

And attacking the MLB’s, who aren’t that fast. Instead we ignored them

The passing game argument I will dismiss, with all due respect, because Alabama’s secondary was simply clearly better. How do you know we didn’t try anything downfield? We don’t have the best angles as television viewers.

As for “spread HD” and toss outs, did you see how fast and disciplined that Alabama defense is? We tried today, pardner, but this was going to be a defensive struggle between two disciplined and great defenses.

I agree it's better,

but I can’t say we lost this game because luck wasn’t on our side.

We fumbled because Bama hit our TE and knocked the ball loose. We threw an INT because their defenders got pressure and then made a play. Their D was great. Our D was pretty good. The reason that PSU lost had nothing to do with luck.

I was at the game and watched the receivers. There wasn't much downfield attacks (Bad grammar)

I’m aware of the talented defense, I’ve already said they’re the best in the nation. But we played their game, and we let the secondary keep the field in front of them today for the majority of the game. When we didn’t, we were rather successful.

And on the opening drive, a lot of the success, especially the Redd runs came from the spread HD. It didn’t come from following Stank and Pannell up the middle for a 1 yard gain

I understand the frustration

The three turnovers seemed to happen at the most soul-crushing times, and they seemed to temporarily crush the soul of the defense when they happened. The 4 or 5 possessions McGloin led felt like they were just given away. And the defense didn’t even come close to getting a turnover against a team that gave it away 5 times to Kent State. We were good enough to win today, and we lost by a big margin. That’s plenty to be pissed off about.

That being said, we learned a fair amount about the team today, and a lot of what we learned was encouraging. I think we’ve got a good team on our hands, and with so many young players still developing, I think we’re going to get a whole lot better as the season goes on.

I think you've hit on the problem

Since when was “improved” the standard? The program has “improved” since the bad years. We’ve sure come a long way since ’03 and ’04.

This is a program that was in the top 10 perennially for 20-25 years. Now we’re willing to settle for mediocrity. To what end? To let an old man bask in the dimming glory of his prior successes? To permit him to advance his son to positions that he is not qualified for in the hope that he can cement his legacy with Dynastic rule?

If Penn State fans are really willing to accept what they saw today as being perfectly acceptable then they really have permitted the lessening of expectations and the degradation of the program.

How is a loss to the number 3 team mediocrity. Some people need to go back to actually check out some Penn State history. Some people seem to think we were world beaters every year and we beat every team in the top 5 every year, most years on the same day.

by psuwresfan on Sep 10, 2011 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Pre Big 10, there were a number of years that we “waltzed” thru a schedule of mediocre teams. There were some years that we beat some pretty good Pitt, NC State, Miami, etc. teams. But, other years, some of those teams were pretty bad. WVU, BC, etc. were never consistently good when we played them every year.

If we were beating top ten teams in many of those undefeated years, we would have more than two MNC’s.

Serious question for those that think this game ends the QB competition: what did you see today from the coaching staff makes you think that? I think that Bolden looked better, but the staff kept running McGloin out there when he wasn’t doing a damn thing. Why do you think that will change next week?

I found a lot to be optimistic about today

Yeah, losing sucked. A lot. But:

—I saw Bolden take a big step forward today. Good throws, made a few good reads, and showed some good, tough runs there at the end. More than that, he seemed to have an intense, confident demeanor that allowed him to take command of the offense like I hadn’t seen him do before. McGloin wasn’t as bad as the numbers made him look, but he’s clearly been passed.

—The defense is very good. When Crawford and Lattimore can get pressure, the defense goes from very good to great. They didn’t do it consistently today, but I think they’re going to be better than last year. We need to find a way to generate more turnovers to compete with a team like Bama, but otherwise I’m feeling very good about our D.

—Redd and Beachum are both going to be damn good. The offensive line struggled to open things up for them consistently today, but they both had some nice runs through an outstanding Bama D.

The O-line wasn’t great today, but for the moment I’m willing to bet that’s more a product of Bama’s excellent defense than our line’s deficiencies. Really, my only big concern on offense coming out of today were the dropped passes; this was a problem last week as well. Big Red needs to get on that.

I want to see Bolden made the sole first-team QB. I want to see the WRs stop dropping passes. I want to see the OL make a little more progress. And I want to see the D generate more turnovers. I think we’re good enough to win our next 7 games. And if those concerns are addressed before Nebraska comes to town, we’ll be good enough to win our last 3, too.

The punt from ’Bama’s 40 down 20-3 was almost unforgivable. Just kneel on the ball if you are going to give up.

I want to see how State recovers from today.

Temple played us tough last year, and while there is reason to believe the Lions are better and the Owls worse this year, I want to see how this loss to Alabama sits with the players. If they come out and destroy Temple next week, I will feel a little bit better about today; if they play flat, it could be a long season . . .

by dbl5030 on Sep 10, 2011 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

The problems I have:

1- until the class limits kick in, the B1G will not be able to compete with teams that can sign 36 more players over a 5 year span.
2- The QB rotation was a complete killer. If a QB is moving the ball and keeping us in the game, you just can’t start yo-yo’ing them. I really hope this settled the debate. No more split snaps.
3- The Devon drop, (seemingly incorrect) fake punt first down, Devon and Sczerba fumble were plays that could’ve changed the game. Too many mistakes.
4- I have never said anything like this before, but the coaches did not play to win the game. When you punt with 3 scores with 10 minutes left, you show you do not believe you can win. And when you show you don’t believe you can win, your players will not believe it either.
5- If this is going to be a big time WR corps, then they need to act like it and go after the ball and grab everything that comes within arms length.

All that said, I’m not convinced this is a team that loses another game, IF the clear QB choice is made from here on.

I'm pretty sure there are coaches challenges in the NCAA

They’re just extremely uncommon because they are only needed on plays where the booth decides not to review a play. I kno0w wikipedia is hardly a credible source, but here’s what they have:

Once per game, each head coach may also call a timeout and challenge the ruling on the previous play before the next play starts. A coach must have at least one timeout remaining in order to challenge (teams receive three timeouts per half). If the challenge is successful and the on-field ruling is overturned, the team keeps its timeout and is allowed only one more challenge. If unsuccessful, the team loses its timeout and is allowed no more challenges.

idk if it was atrocious, necessarily.

a little generous, probably. but at most they gave bama 6 inches, which considering how inexact spotting the ball is, isn’t that bad.

and that brings up something else that’s always bothered me. refs make a naked-eye spot from 20 yards away at full-speed, and then the chains are brought out to measure things down to a fraction of an inch? how does this make any sense at all?

I would say atrocious

Solely because it was 4 and 6 inches and he got tackled behind the line of scrimmage there is no conceivable way that should be a first down. Also it absolutely should have been reviewed.

by ppfcpp on Sep 10, 2011 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

This is exactly what I saw

The PSU line pushed onto the Bama side of the Line of Scrimmage almost instantly, and never backed up. That play went for a loss, and I don’t really know what the refs saw to place the ball where they did. Hence, my claim that the spot was atrocious.

Trust me, I completely agree with you.

I think the 2 QB system was a really bad idea. Hard for either kid to get a rhythm going knowing he’s going to be pulled soon.

My point is that I think Joe is a man of his word, and if he sat both kids down yesterday and told them they would split time, they would split time. Also, if that was the game plan for the entire week, I don’t think they could change that the morning of the game.

by GMac14 on Sep 10, 2011 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I completely get what you are saying.

I’m just disagreeing. If one QB is moving the offense after two drives, you don’t change.

Go back and watch the NW game last year. Bolden struggled to pick up the blitz. So McGloin came in. Watch the sidelines, because when McGloin was far worse, Bolden was told he was coming back in. Then he was literally physically held back from getting in the game on the last drive before the half and McGloin was sent in. If you can make that decision then, you can make it now.

Depends on the character of this team.

I remain haunted by the 1999 squad, who imploded after the Minnesota loss, and paved the way for the dark years. Those years still taint us, when one looks at our record since 2000 against the really good teams.

If some other teams are good enough to give us an impressive resume, it wouldn't be a near-miracle

Let’s say the last 3 teams on the schedule are all top-10 when we play them. We beat them all, finishing with an 11-0, #2 ranked Wisconsin team on the road. Then let’s say we get Nebraska again in the Championship game, who’s still in the top 10 despite two losses.

It’s extremely possible that the end of our schedule works out that way, and if we finished a 12-1 season by beating four top-ranked teams (including a #2), that would be as compelling a case as any to make the MNC game. Beating all those teams would be a tall order, but I don’t see anything in that scenario to qualify as a near-miracle.

The only thing I see in that scenario as being a near miracle is all those teams going unbeaten. From what I saw this weekend I think every big ten team will pick up at least one loss in conference. The other would be the REAL ONE, composed entirely of young enthusiasts in camouflage uniforms, who would not be put on display but from whom impossible efforts would be demanded and to whom all sorts of tricks would be taught. That's the Army in which I should like to fight.

Yea I’m the same way. I worry about the team being down. And if they are I do believe temple has the ability to beat us. If we play like were capable then I don’t think it will be close.

Which is what I fear.

I think the coaches have to handle this loss carefully. While a lot of the posts here are positive, do we know what the mood of the team is, and what they will feel like going to Philly next week?

I said you aren't "that" good.

It’s because I haven’t seen or heard anything that makes me think Wisconsin has significantly improved from last year. Last year, Wisconsin won a weak Big Ten and then got embarrassed in the Rose Bowl. Ergo, I don’t see why the same thing wouldn’t happen this year. Also, Bielema’s a douche.

I’ve had a hard time with this “the perceived value of my team is partly a function of that of my conference mates” thing since we joined this league. Still, I’ve gotten pretty good at it at this point. Nonetheless, when I can find a reason that tO$U should not get upset by Toledo, it makes me long for the Eastern Independent (the heading under which one would find the Lions in the sports section) days when I was never faced with these double-bind choices.

Just got back.

1. Pick a damned quarterback. And make sure it’s Bolden. Not because he was head and shoulders better than McGloin today, but because, at its heart, but because he is head and shoulders above McGloin in potential. McGloin will always be McFarve. Bolden just might be great.

2. In the words of Don Rickles, there is no booing, there will be no booing! Listen, McGloin sucked. But to boo him is just low class. Boo the coaches (and if this is whom it was aimed at, then fine), but not a player. At the end of the day, they’re still kids.

3. I am all for welcoming sportsmanship. But, opposing fans need to realize they’re in an opposing stadium that can be hostile, especially when it is turning on its own team. Standing and jumping at plays when surrounded by angry people wearing white will get boos and “sit down!”’s thrown at him or her. I was guilty of it, but if that freaking red pompom came close to my face once more, I was going to break the stick off and throw it under the bleachers.

4. GREAT halftime performance. Moving, well played. I loved it.

5. Nice to see the Superbugs flyover. Even nicer to know one of the guys is a Penn State graduate.

6. The defense showed that it has a really, really bright future. You can’t send them out as much as they were and expect them to always make stops. But, at times those kids made Alabama look utterly pathetic. I look forward to the future.

7. Receivers: Catch the damn ball. Your QBs are struggling, and when they hit your hands, you better reward them with a catch.

8. McGloin. Wow. Looked like a walk-on today. Almost no redeeming actions (none come to mind).

9. What is with the Alabama guys wearing polos? There seemed to be a uniform: polos, tan shorts or pants, and white shoes.

10. Alabama gals. I’m still in the age/2+7. And all I will say is, by and large, oh mah Gawd. Southern girls have some… genes.

11. I will follow up when I think of more.

That's the SEC fan uniform!
What is with the Alabama guys wearing polos? There seemed to be a uniform: polos, tan shorts or pants, and white shoes.

When I got here in 1990 (just before football season), I was struck by the almost-cult-like norm convergence in dress. The shorts were Duck Head khaki at that time. Don’t bring some other weak brand into Beauregard’s house.

Less is more.

We have a group of guys, high school friends, that get together yearly (or thereabout, depending on schedules) and play a certain one of the many NePA 9-hole beauties. (It’s not beautiful. It’s $7/round.) We hold the “no shirt, no shoes” classic. It was inspired one day, long ago, when a few of us were golfing and on the course was a guy in jean shorts, a wife beater, and flip flops. And we thought, well, if he can, how far can we take it. So we removed our shirts. Subsequent years lost the shoes. And now, it’s nothing much more than shoeless, shirtless guys walking the course, cursing the weight of the bags whose jacket/sweater pockets and ball pockets are filled with the frothy stuff.
