dear ass-clowns
Let me preface this rant by saying this: I'm not usually the one to gush about my experiences--good or bad. But sometimes, enough is enough, and i have to vent it. This is one of those classical "if the shoe fits" kinds of rants. I trust you guys, so I'll put it out there.
PS, if you were involved in any of this, let me know. If you started any of it, and are reading this, then I'm mad at the system. Because you, friend, should be in the clink.
First of all--Shame on you, Lincoln Financial Field. There is no excuse that a person should be able to attend a sporting event, show up for the national anthem, and be unable to see the American Flag. Yes, there was one there. No, it wasn't visible to the entire stadium. I know I'm in the minority because my seats were in the rafters, but COME ON! There is a beautiful, state-of-the-art stadium here, with plenty of space to put the flag up where it can be seen...or down on the field where it can be seen. But to tuck it away below the upper deck--I know some of you won't agree with this for starters on my list, but a lot of men and women sacrifice everything for that symbol of freedom; that song and that flag stand for the reasons we can safely attend a sporting event en masse. And you half-assed it, Linc. In Philadelphia, where it all started, no less. Anyway...
Secondly, Shame on you, belligerent Penn State Fan. In the fourth quarter, right when Michael Mauti was channeling his inner Conlan-uszny and making that epic pick, I was screaming at you. In case you missed it (I'm sure it wasn't shown on TV), that was the moment that one PSU Fan started arguing with another PSU Fan over what appeared to be an unwelcome comment after some serious eaves-dropping. That led to a monster FIST FIGHT in the front row of the upper deck (Section 230, right above the 'OWLS' end zone that saw some 15 people escorted out of the stadium. DISGRACEFUL. If you can't handle your ass in public--regardless of who started that--then you should not be allowed in public. I watched you, asshole, punch somebody's wife right in the side of the head because your ignorant ass can't keep your fists to yourself, let alone guide an accurate F***ing blow to the instigator. And the other guy in the fight--why the hell were you choking somebody over the railing of the upper deck? What the F**K were you thinking, bud? I hope you both got a million parking tickets while you dried out in the drunk tank. And that I see you on Parking Wars. May no act...
Finally, Shame on you, ignorant Temple Fans. What, you see a fight going on in the stands, and your first reaction is to get in on that, and start cold-cocking blue-haired stander-bys? Why did you think it was necessary to come down from Row 30 to start punching anyone you could reach? I hope you rot in your cage, you oversized asshat.
All in all, I was nervous about the game, couldn't tell who the better quarterback was, thought Silas looked pretty good, and wondered if we were going for the record in senseless penalties. But, sadly, the only thing I'm sure to remember was what happened in the stands.

I saw Paul McCartney there a few years ago...
They booed him after about 6-7 songs because he hadn’t played Let It Be yet (honest – they started a chant for it during the boo). I mean, get real. Everyone knows that Let It Be comes in the encore, but seriously, Philly, you were a cool city in 1776. Maybe even until like 1850. But get over it. Now, you’re just a second/third tier city in America.

Its much easier to make fun of philly than looking at all fan bases
I mean throwing snowballs at santa happened 50 years ago, “cheering” Michael Irvin’s injury (even though the fans were cheering for the shoving match after the play when Dawkins, I believe, knocked down Emmitt Smith after he taunted the fans). It is easier to pick on one fanbase for isolated incidents than realize that most places have a-holes for fans.

So sorry that you had to experience.....
something that is becoming a commonplace occurance at athletic events….the more the “fans” think that they are really part of the game and that without their participation and bad sportsmanship (under the cloak of “rooting” for the old home team) their team could never possibly win. Welcome to another reason to get drunk and become an Ass-Clown as you said. I have been to many athletic events and the results from that pre, during and post game boozing have ruined plenty of games for me, you and other fans who just want to see a good game. I am not anti-booze, but anti-boorish behaviour that often leads to hooliganism for lack of a better word. We will soon become the fans of inter-national soccer. What’s next? Burning down the stadium because you didn’t like the offsides call? Killing someone for the audacity to root for an opponent? I don’t know what can be done except for the fans who encounter such behaviour cooperate with the authorities and kick the Clowns out on their collective Asses.
"The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God." The Government is like the Mob, you can check out, but never leave.
It's really unfortunate
I’ve never been to an NFL game, but from stories I’ve heard from my uncle who has Steelers season tickets, it is not uncommon at all for brawls to occur. And fans of other NFL teams I’ve come across usually confirm that it’s not a Pittsburgh-specific thing.
I’d really really really like that trend to not infiltrate the college game. But I’m afraid as college football becomes even more popular and lucrative, we’ll see this type of garbage on a regular basis. During my 4 years on campus, I never saw a fight inside or outside of the stadium on gameday. Only once did my friends and I even come close to duking it out with opposing fans, and that doesn’t count because they were Buckeyes.

I will say this

How about other years? Or a comparison of enforcement thresholds in Philly vs. Pittsburgh vs. NYC? Raw statistics are super useful. Anyway, I had never seen a car set on fire until I went to the Vet, but I saw it twice in the span of three years … Philly = Morgantown’s big brother?

Penn State uses [or at least used] the horse stables asholding cells
during big weekends. So using your same logic then it is a logical assumption to make that a PSU fan started the fight since a jail was in a weird location at one point.
Reporter: Can you give us a touchdown celebration, one that you would get penalized for?
Moye: I play at Penn State. I don’t celebrate.
No
Just pointing out that while antics happen everywhere, only Philly felt the need to build a processing facility into their athletic venue in order to streamline their operations. I think most venues have a “holding cell” or some place where they can detain drunks or otherwise impaired/rowdy/obnoxious fans.

Everybody always says this...
Philly felt the need to build a processing facility into their athletic venue in order to streamline their operations
If you’re going to get kicked for a penny-ante assault or DandD you’d probably find it a thousand times more convenient to be processed at the stadium rather than sitting in a paddy-wagon until after the game, then hauled downtown to night court for processing. Assuming that you’re getting released RoR or with lowball bail, getting run through at the stadium probably saves you three or four hours. If not more.
Oh, so it was convenience
like shuttles to the parking lot or waiters for the club level patrons? I guess Philly was just being innovative and responding the needs of its customers. My bad.

I can tell you that there are no efforts made to save OT $’s for cops.

I'm just saying, it probably was more convieneint.
Moreover, it probably led to more arrests, because it would be easier for the cops to process something they otherwise would have let go.

Agreed.
Ridiculous. People that go after children have a special place in the innermost circle of hell for them.
I had my own run in with Temple fans a few years ago. I was at a Braves/Phillies game in 2007 and Brian McCann hit a 2 run HR in the top of the 9th to give the Braves the lead. Now being a Braves fan, I of course started cheering. Not really screaming or yelling but you knew I was happy. It was “college night” and my friends and were lucky enough to be sitting in front of a bunch of Temple students. They started screaming at me, which led me to yelling back at them. There were at least 2 or 3 girls that were trying to fight me. The dudes in the crowd were yelling at me but the girls honestly were trying to climb over the seats to throw down with me. Now, I don’t believe in hitting women but I’m telling you, if they attacked me, I would have dropped them. Just sayin.

Just typing this comment makes me feel about 40 years older than I actually am, but...
I was shocked at the Temple fans at the game. I don’t necessarily have a problem with the F*CK JOEPA shirts or anything, I have my own “Buck the F*ckeyes” shirt. But the shirts, the yelling, the fighting, all of it added up to just a bit much. I suppose the final straw was when the 3 Temple fans ran up to my 11-year old cousin and her two friends and screamed “F*ck Penn State” at them before running away. For as much shit as we like to give Ohio State, they are pleasantly tame compared to the people I came across this weekend.
Rant over. Ya’ll can get back on my lawn now.
in 2008
when I was at “the shoe” for Penn State’s win, the O$U fans, in general, were pretty civil. There was one group though, as we were walking through the parking lots to the stadium, that were clowns. There was one dude, he was on crutches, cursing and swearing at us. I’m not going to lie, I did think about how funny it would be to run over and kick them out from under him and watch him fall over.

"We gon' get down. We gon' do the do. I'm going to hit these mother****ers" - Dock Ellis, May 1, 1974.
Yes
My experience at OSU in 2008 was pretty awesome. I think one student may have made one comment to me, but I also had another student come up to me after the game, shake my hand, and congratulate me on the win.
Their alumni were fantastic and accomodating
A couple Temple fans came through where our tailgate was
and yelled “WE ARE! DOUCHEBAGS!”
I’ve never been in an actual fight and don’t pretend to be tough, but I stepped right up into a kid’s face (he had to be 19 at the oldest, so it was weird) and I said “hey man, that was pretty funny. I got a question for you…Name 5 Temple football players – 1. Bernard Pierce, go!”
The kid looked at the ground and tried to get around me and said, “whatever we’re still going to kick your overrated asses”
I said “welcome to your first Temple game, don’t get used to the fans.” The moral of the story is that most of the Temple kids causing problems were probably more attracted to the large crowd/outdoor drinking atmosphere than having any sort of stake in their team’s performance. When we play teams with big fan bases or rivals that we are familiar with, it’s not as contentious. Most people are excited about watching their teams. When we play a school like Temple, it’s a shit show because it’s less about football and more about throwing themselves into a mob mentality and getting drunk (not that you can’t both get drunk and be excited about your team, but you get the point).

Totally agree with this assessment

I wouldn't lump all Philly fans together as a bunch of assholes, BUT
in my opinion, the biggest assholes of the Philly fanbase are worse than the biggest assholes of most other fanbases, and that’s why Philly fans get a bad rap in general. It’s like they just have a generally angrier attitude about their teams. If you grew up there, or have lived there for a long time, you probably don’t notice it as much as an outsider would. I lived in the area for about 5 years, and it was noticeable to me, especially when we first moved there.

Yes, you're right about the angrier attitude
I went to the Phillies game on Friday. They were one game from clinching the division in mid September, and clearly the best team in baseball.
They put in a recent call-up from AAA to pitch in a tie game and he ended up blowing it. Of course had the game really meant something they wouldn’t have had him in there. He is not even going to be on the playoff roster. That didn’t stop a few fans in my section (good seats I got from a friend, so probably season ticket holders) from booing and saying things like “enjoy the rest of your career in AAA, you bum!” and the like.
Basically that experience and my old roommate’s entire demeanor drove home the point that as long as there is SOME negative to dwell upon, it will be dwelled upon. It’s just the mentality of the sporting culture in Philly, and it takes some getting used to.
"We gon' get down. We gon' do the do. I'm going to hit these mother****ers" - Dock Ellis, May 1, 1974.
Yea Philly does have a losers mentality that drives me nuts sometimes

from 2003-2007. It was great because there were no crowds or anything. You could go to a day/night doubleheader and if you bought a ticket for the early game you could stay for the second. There wasn’t a big enough crowd to chase everybody out. Add in a day when they were doing dollar dogs and it was fabulous.

I went to at least 5 Phillies games a year from 1994 through 2009
And up until 2009 I could buy pretty good tickets the day of the game… unfortunately that’s no longer the case. But I’d much rather have a winning team than easy access to tickets.
(the only reason I haven’t been to 5+ games in 10 and 11 were due to living out in Minnesota… forgivable I hope)

Oh winning baseball
is much better than easy ticket access. But loving baseball in general and not liking the Phillies made the cheap tickets more beneficial to me ha

Temple Fans and Philadelphia Fans = 2 Different animals
All dogs are pets. That doesn’t mean all pets are dogs.
All Temple fans are Philadelphia fans. That doesn’t mean that all Philadelphia fans are Temple fans.
I’m from the Philly suburbs (West Chester) and a PSU grad. I’ve attended dozens (if not hundreds) of Philadelphia sporting events, with this being only my 3rd Temple game I’ve been to. In my experience of going to live games, my rankings of fan-bases are (from best to worst):
1) Phillies – Generally a family-friendly event, but there can be lots of drunk college kids during the Summer.
2) Flyers – Great fanbase that loves their team and understands the sport. Even though, like most other hockey franchises, draws a little too much of the “corporate crowd”.
3) 76’s – On par with the crowd you would expect at a funeral. Not producing any energy, but not causing any problems either (Might just be the result of the teams performance).
4) Eagles – TONS of alcohol consumption (not saying that’s a bad thing). However, they remain somewhat well-mannered during early kickoffs. You definitely need to proceed with caution during a night game if you’re from out of town.
5) Temple – The absolute worst of the bunch. Zero class or knowledge of the game. Somebody needs to tell them that, if they feel a “F&#K Penn State” chant is required, they should do it at some point other than right before losing the lead, in fact, that’s the worst possible time to say that chant.
In short, there are a ton of great Philly fans. However, for whatever reason, Temple is somehow a magnet for attracting all the bad eggs. Then again, if I had to live in North Philly for four years, I would probably be ignorant and beligerent too.

Haha I would never go to an Eagles game at the Linc
despite the fact that I’m a Phillies and Flyers fan, I’m also a Redskins fan. And I didn’t enjoy being a PSU fan at a Temple game on Saturday so I can’t imagine I’d enjoy going to an Eagles game as a Redskins fan.

Btw, when I speak of Philly fans,
I’m talking about the greater Philadelphia area, not just the city itself.
Word on the street is you're a jerk, Mitchell.
FACT:
Every single person in or near Philly is a complete asshole. Even the babies.
Opinions are like f---holes. Everyone has at least two.

Bears are just assholes in general

Bears are overrated.
Bears will run from you before you have time to get your camera out of your pocket.
Opinions are like f---holes. Everyone has at least two.
Is that why people sometimes describe someone in a bad mood as
“a bear with a sore ass”?
Word on the street is you're a jerk, Mitchell.
Did you know Philly law firms pay lawyers to be assholes?
"Is that a shot at me? 'cause that makes me want to read it all the less."
The truth of the matter is...
Ass-Clown = Alcohol * Bad Judgment
Notice that geography is not part of the equation.

My original response.....
included the fact that this kind of behaviour occurs in all venues and that the thread just happened to be about Philly/Temple. Bad Judment it always is(Yoda, StarWars, Episode vii, the Fans Strike Back).

Oh god
Come on now. I have been to games at the Vet, Linc, Citizen’s Bank, RFK, FedEx Field, Old Meadowlands, etc. My experience, out of everyone there 2% will be dicks. It’s as horrific in Philly as everywhere else in the Northeast. I have had drinks thrown on me, and I have seen Eagle fans throw drinks on people. I have seen a Phillies fan berate a 10 year old who boo-ed Utley. It was despicable. I have also seen a Red Sox fan pick a fight with a 14 year old Orioles fan when I took in a game at Fenway 3 years ago.
Stop it with this ESPN-style generalization about cities and their ass-holeness. Every city has them, and we can agree they all suck. Philly gets the coverage because it’s an easy joke. It sucks everywhere, so stop lumping an entire city into this travesty above.

The thing with Temple isn't that every fanbase doesn't have bad fans, every fanbase does
I’ve encountered enough Michigan fans to give any other fanbase the benefit of the doubt except Temple. Every fanbase has a few bad fans, except Michigan who pushes 50%.
Temple pushes 90% and I’m being lenient. I hope Azzadio runs that program into the ground, Temple fans are horrible at best.

The bottom line is we all have met such a tiny percent of other fanbases,
that our perception will always be tainted by our experiences. I have lots of friends from law school that went to Michigan undergrad, and all were good, knowledgeable fans who loved to talk about any other team’s history.
Although Addazio is terrible. He will have that program back under .500 in no time.

Philly fans will always be labeled as being assholes
as long as the chunk of the fan bases who are proud of the label go out of their way to fulfill it. Most philly fans are awesome, passionate fans and are also very knowledgeable. Most are not all like this.
Every fanbase has ass-hats
We’re not exactly immune either.
Years ago I went with my family and grandparents to a PSU vs Iowa game at Beaver Stadium. My grandparents are Iowa alums, as is my mom. Naturally, they were decked out in black and yellow (my dad and I were in PSU gear, and my sister just didn’t care). Walking into the stadium, my 75 year old grandparents were heckled (“Fuck Iowa, go home!”), despite the fact that, ya know, they were 75 years old, and my sister and I were probably 11 and 12 respectively. Not exactly our classiest moment.
It’s nice to hear that Alabama fans had a great time this past game, but like I said, we’re not exactly immune to it ourselves. That said, it’s too bad you had a bad experience at the game.
"We heard all that talk all week about the SEC and their speed, but we knew personally that they weren't nearly as tough as us."
-Tony Hunt
This is exactly right, as well.
And everytime PSU fans act poorly, some moron in our fanbase says “they were probably from Philly.”

"Why did you think it was necessary to come down from Row 30 to start punching anyone you could reach? "
Ah nothing like a sunny afternoon in the fall in the City of Brotherly Love.
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
Broad strokes and such
But how do you not roll your eyes when you read that one sportswriter punched another at a press conference and it’s Les Bowen of the Daily News nailing Jeff McLane of the Inquirer.
