Penn State Depth Chartin': Indiana State

Before everyone gets into a hissy fit, this is not going to be an official-in-any-way depth chart. It's simply a projection of what we're likely to see on the field, not on the .pdf Penn State released a week ago. So take everything with a grain of salt, especially since it's week one, and against a team like Indiana State.
Join me below the fold for this week's depth chart and a few notes...
Now that Rob Bolden got the nod to "start" this week, we can all relax continue to watch him and Matt McGloin battle it out, since Joe Paterno said this week both will play a lot tomorrow. Great. This isn't the place to talk about that, so I won't. Let's look at a few other things. Most of the depth chart this week is the same as the one released last week. The main reason for this is because we just don't know what the coaches are going to do on opening week. And if the past is any indication, it might not matter anyway since no one in their right mind would want to give away special packages or plays against Indiana State so Alabama can get more info for next week.
I gave the starting nod to DeOn'tae Pannell and John Urschel because of the reasons I stated above. I was tempted to slide Johnnie Troutman into the starting spot this week, but that'd be more of a shot in the dark than any sort of educated guess.
You'll notice that I put Nate Stupar in the defensive end lineup, mostly for fun, but partly because we may see some of the SUDE (stand-up defensive end) this week. Things like that actually are experiments to get going during a more manageable opponent. You don't want to hope something works when Trent Richardson is taking the handoff against your defense.
Nickel Back is also included in my depth chart. Drew Astorino played here in 2008. When Penn State does use five defensive backs, there's a tendency to play three safeties, rather than three corners. But this position is mixed, with Astorino and Chaz Powell in the lineup. If Powell plays nickel, then I'd bet Stephon Morris goes to corner.
Anthony Fera is out, so he's not on here. No way he plays. Also, I listed Devon Smith as the primary punt returner, even though Justin Brown said both will play. This is just a matter of my belief Smith will end up fielding more of the returnable punts. Just go along with it.
There is also the injury factor, which can be found in Jeff's weekly Brooze Cruise injury report.
With that, did I miss anything? It'll all get worked out next week. But in case you wanted to print out your own depth chart for tomorrow's game, here ya go...

True Story:
I google’d “Nickel Back Football” just to make sure I didn’t spell it like the band.

Are you thinking that Sukay and Astorino flip back to their 2009 spots?
Or was that unintentional?

Things I'm looking for re. depth chart on defense
- performance of young DL backups, particularly Jones, Olaniyan, Baublitz, Alosi and Graham
- Stupar and Mauti at LB in the Nickel, they worked well together last year, will the line up be the same
-Sure tackling and no blown assignments by the top six LBs
- Safety at Nickel? SOA or Willis? Probably gonna be 3 CBs since both Chaz and Morris are better than those two.
- Is Thomas still climbing out of the dog house or has Wallace clearly stayed ahead of him.
Things I want to see but they won’t be evident until next week.
- Crawford and Lattimore returning to form
- A slimmed down Jordan Hill getting more push
Striving for Success with Honor
I'm thinking that you won't be able to take Hodges off the field for the nickel.
Seems to me Stupar is more suited to sub in on the 4-3 and rush the passer from the outside a little bit.

I like Willis, but not at the expense of Sukay the way he played last year.
I thought Astorino was actually excellent in the nickel his first year, so I wouldn’t mind seeing Willis come in and take Astorino’s place and him sliding to the nickel.

But don't get me wrong
I like Astorino, when he’s healthy.

Astorino is usually a good tackler...
I just feel like he’s always been injured as long as he’s been at PSU. Can’t remember the last time Penn State had a real playmaker at safety. Willis could be that guy.

I really think Sukay could have
been one last year. He was really coming on before he got hurt.

Yes it was during the dark years-but he could hit! When he went to PSU Ithought Hodges could fill that role.

Every time I see the WR lineup
I get excited. Those guys can really play – as long as they find the handle and hang on to the ball. Too bad there’s no more stick-um.

I'm hoping that someone does something spectacular at DE
Lattimore, Crawford, and a SUEDE or two having a big day doesn’t mean things are going well this season, but it might mean things won’t go as poorly as last year at the position.
All the pieces are there in the rest of the defense for Scrap’s kids to step up buckle up achieve great things.

Van Fleet is Loyalsock, isn't he? single A great athlete that should have gotten scholarships to MAC schools or such.
My grammer skills need improved.
Yeah he is. He was still young by the time I graduated, so I didn’t see him play much. It appears when he did, though, he did pretty well.

My brother lives in Loyalsock.
His son coaches girls soccer in that area.
I'd like to have two Armies -- one for display, with lovely guns, tanks, little Soldiers, staffs, distinguished and doddering Generals and dear little regimental officers, who would be deeply concerned over their General's bowel movements or their Colonel's piles; an Army that would be shown for a modest fee on every fairground in the country.
The other would be the REAL ONE, composed entirely of young enthusiasts in camouflage uniforms, who would not be put on display but from whom impossible efforts would be demanded and to whom all sorts of tricks would be taught. That's the Army in which I should like to fight.

This is what I wanna see..
Interceptions – lots of them
‘knock ya into next week’ tackles
;juke ya outta ur jock’ cuts by Si Redd
‘knock ya into next week’ run up the middle by Zordich/Dukes
Ball fakes by our QB ( everybody on the D runs the wrong direction)
Punt returns of more than 5 yards
Fumble recoveries – lots of them
we're all here, but we're not all there

I want to see domination...
….similar to how we dominated Coastal Carolina in 2008.
Everything needs to look smooth. I expect something like 52-3!
WE ARE.......PENN STATE!
AGREED!
I don’t want another relative nail-biter like last year’s YSU game. I want to see total control from the opening kick-off until the clock bleeds down to 00:00. We schedule cupcakes to demolish them — let’s git r done tomorrow.

Folksy
My quick rundown:
Bolden, Redd, Suhey (passing FB), Zordich (rushing/blocking FB), Moye, Brown, Smith, Szczerba at the skill positions, Okoli, Pannell, Stank, Trout, Barham, from L-R.
Crawford, Hill, Still, Latimore up front, Hodges, Carson, Mauti in the box (TWSS), and Lynn, Sukay, Astorino, Powell across the back.
Butterworth punting, Evan Lewis kicking
Players you’ll see healthy doses of: McGloin, Beachum, Kersey, Moseby-Felder, Haplea, Urschel, Farrell, Baublitz, Olaniyan, Jones, Hailes, Stupar, Fortt, Hull, Morris, Willis
Did I miss anyone?

This game will not be a total success until we are all
scouring through the roster, trying to figure out who number XX is — that’s how many Penn State players should be playing in what I hope is a 52-3 game.

Actually, no.
I mean, I love the entire PSU team. But I just don’t see him being a solid contributor this, or next, year, barring injuries. We have two great running backs, and two great fullbacks (one of whom will graduate and be replaced by ANOTHER great fullback). Sorry, Curtis. Nothing personal.

As I said somewhere else
I don’t want to see any of the “starting slow” or “working out the kinks”. A lot of people here are talking a 9 or 10 or even 11 win season and for that to happen we need to see something similar to what Wisconsin did to UNLV last night. Destruction. If there’s not a few sacks, several hurries and QB hits, a pick or two and a fumble recovery all along with total domination for both lines, then this year will be mediocre at best. Destroy your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their cheerleaders. THE CUPCAKE WILL BE DEVOURED!!!!!
