Penn State Depth Chartin': Eastern Michigan
I'm a little distracted today. Y'know, the whole birth of my first child and all. So this is going to be a relatively brief update today. It sort of works out, since the depth chart heading into Eastern Michigan matters little. Let's just hope some of the guys in the second and third columns get tons of playing time (not due to injury, of course).
Some quick notes:
- Brandon Beachum sprained his ankle, and will miss this week.
- After Michael Zordich's very good performance last week, I project he'll get the nod this week on the first play using a fullback.
- Same with Sean Stanley, who made some great plays last week that directly helped to win the game. He gets the start over Eric Latimore.
- Derek Moye is officially a punt returner.
Anything else, leave it in the comment thread.

glad to hear everyone is healthy
I’ll be joining you in less than a week

Congrats, Mike!
Post pictures — they are great to use against the kids when they get to be teenagers!
Seriously, hang on tightly to your child — he will be grown in no time. My boys were 7 and 4 last week — 21 and 18 this week. I have NO idea where all that time went . . . .
I'd like to have two Armies -- one for display, with lovely guns, tanks, little Soldiers, staffs, distinguished and doddering Generals and dear little regimental officers, who would be deeply concerned over their General's bowel movements or their Colonel's piles; an Army that would be shown for a modest fee on every fairground in the country.
The other would be the REAL ONE, composed entirely of young enthusiasts in camouflage uniforms, who would not be put on display but from whom impossible efforts would be demanded and to whom all sorts of tricks would be taught. That's the Army in which I should like to fight.

Actually 100 mph tape and 550 cord works best

+2, RW.
I keep a bunch of 550 cord in my car; it’s amazing how useful it is.
Thanks for jogging good memories!

More humane psu friendly tip......
My 17 month old has a blue and white football that plays “we are….Penn State” and snippets of the fight song when you spike it. This toy has been invaluable in occupying his time during game day!
I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball! Let's crack some nuts!
We sure do create some funky position names
Fritz? Bckr? Sam? H? NB?
I watch a ton of football, and I know what a Sam is, but what on earth do these other names mean, and does every team break out players like this in their depth charts?

They are historical names
for the positions at PSU:
“When you are assigned a position at Penn State, you are reminded of the ghosts that came before. Each linebacker has a position name to make sense of the defensive calls: Sam (strongside linebacker), and “Fritz” and “Backer.” Penn State linebackers know which players, in the decades preceding them, were Fritzes and which were Backers. Similarly, in many systems the strong safety is known as a “monster” player because he plays all over the field. For PSU, the concept lives though Coach Rip Engle, who coached the Nittany Lions from 1950 to 1965, thought “monster” derogatory and thus called him “Hero” instead — yet another tradition carried from from the age of Eisenhower to the present."

Penn State defensive names
Sam – strongside LB
Fritz – weakside LB
Will – weakside DE
I’ve heard Mike used as a middle LB as well.
I have two friends name Sam and Fritz too. Do we give our other friends with none position names a hard time?

The Fritz position is allegedly named after the pizza guy.
Not sure where “Sam” came from. Anybody?

In regards what postions are
In the special teams section there is the LS and SH position. I have no clue what these positions are, can anyone clear that up for me, it is really confusing.
LS and SH
LS – Long Snapper
SH – Set Holder (for PATs and FG’s

LS = long snapper.
Believe it or not, there is an art to sailing the ball back to the prima donna kicker.
SH = shithead. This designates who gets the blame for fouling up the kicks.

What's surprising is, the SH is just one individual this week.
Does that mean special teams has significantly improved?

I sure hope so
I’d like to see a FG actually split the uprights this weekend (unless every position goes for a TD).

First off, congrats to Mike!
Secondly, I’m PUMPED for Dukes to get some more PT. Not sure why I’m so drawn to the guy, but he’s a big dude who I’d imagine can move some tacklers. As much as I love Redd, I want this guy to see some field.

Did that at the Temple game in Philly last weekend.
He fell asleep. It’s in my twitter feed from that day, but I can’t post the pic from here.

Wouldn't it be wonderful on Saturday to see Dukes...
…be the player we think him to be? It would be nice for him to have a good game and gain some confidence heading into conference play.
Wouldn't it be wonderful on Saturday to see EVERYONE
be the players we wish they would be?
Sorry, J, couldn’t help but expand on your wish.
